Quantitative research on the heat affected zone ( HAZ) o f weave bead welding ( WBW) joint fo r Invar alloy is carried out in this paper. Based on the morphology and related data analysis of the weld seam, the width difference o f each layer and the forming mechanism are analyzed. Results show that the bottom layer ( Layer 1 ) has the widest HAZ and the smallest fluctuation, which reaches 1 200 |jLm. HAZ width o f layer 2 to 5 is relatively narrower which is basically below 600 jjim, while the amplitude fluctuation is greater. The main reason lies in the welding path. The long straight welding without weave causes the base metal near the groove fully melts which causes by the long straight welding without weave, while welding with weave leads to the uneven and inadequate melting of metal near groove. 展开更多

The transformation behavior and microstructure development in the heat affected zone(HAZ)of 800MPa grade ultra fine structured steel was investigated. It was found that the HAZ has intermediate temperature transformation characteristics in a wide range of cooling rates, with the bainite sheaves consisting of bainite ferrite plates without carbide precipitation and retained austenite in the fast cooling regime. At relatively high cooling rates, which corresponded to low heat inputs, the hardness of the simulated HAZ was above that of the base metal. When the cooling rate was below 9C/s,the welding HAZ would have an obvious softening. The analysis of transformation rates in continuous cooling processes was completed by numerical differential method. The result indicated that the microstructure transformation rate of the HAZ in 800MPa grade ultra fine structured steel changed sharply to slow speeds when the cooling time t8/5 is longer than 7s. 展开更多

One of the main problems during the welding of ferritic stainless steels is severe grain growth within the heat-affected zone (HAZ) In the present study, the microstmctural characteristics of tungsten inert gas (TIG) welded AISI409 ferritic stainless steel were investigated by electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and the effects of welding parameters on the grain size, local misorientation, and low-angle grain boundaries were studied. A 3-D finite element model (FEM) was developed to predict the effects of welding parameters on the holding time of the HAZ above the critical temperature of grain growth. It is found that the base metal is not fully recrystallized. During the welding, complete recrystallization is followed by severe grain growth. A decrease in the number of low-angle grain boundaries is observed within the HAZ. FEM results show that the final state of residual sWains is caused by competition between welding plastic strains and their release by recrystallization. Still, the decisive factor for grain growth is heat input. 展开更多

The intercritical heat-affected zone(ICHAZ) of X80 pipeline steel was simulated by using the Gleeble-3500thermal/mechanical simulator according to the thermal cycle of in-service welding. The microstructures of ICHAZ with different cooling rates were examined, and the hardness, the toughness and corresponding fractography were investigated. Results show that untransformed bainite and ferrite as well as retransformed fine bainite and martensite–austenite(M–A)constituents constitute the microstructure of ICHAZ.The two different morphologies of M–A constituents are stringer and block.Second phase particles which mainly composed of Ti,Nb,C,Fe and Cu coarsened in ICHAZ.Compared with normal welding condition, the toughness of ICHAZ is poor when the cooling time is short under in-service welding condition because of the large area fraction and size of M–A constituents that connect into chains and distribute at the grain boundaries. The Vickers hardness of ICHAZ that decreases with the increase in the cooling time is independent with the area fraction of M–A constituents. 展开更多

Single welding thermal–cycles with different input linear energies (ILE)(15, 20, 30, 40, 50 kJ/cm) and peak temperatures (PT) (900, 1050, 1200, 1300, 1350 ℃) were simulated by MMS-300 to study the correlation of toughness and microstructure in heat-affected zone (HAZ) of a X80 pipeline. The evolution characteristics of microstructure were investigated by OM, SEM and EBSD. The results show that numerous polygonal ferrites and grain boundary ferrites appear, and the sizes apparently decrease as the heat input decreases. Heat input in single welding should be less than 35 kJ/cm to ensure well Charpy impact toughness. The toughness of course grain zone is the lowest when welding heating temperature is 1350 ℃ and it is the weakness part in welded zone. The uniformity of prior austenite grain is worsened as increasing the heat input. Moreover, the characteristics of M-A constituents and high angle grain boundaries (HAGB) are influenced by heat input and PT. In the case of low heat input and PT, higher density of HAGBs, dispersed and fine M-A constituents were observed. Otherwise, with high heat input (≥40 kJ/cm), the effective grain size is almost the diameter of prior austenite grain, and it will decrease the density of HAGB, moreover, coarse M-A constituents which are prone to crack initiation will be generated, thus, the impact toughness of the coarse grain zone will be worsened obviously in welding HAZ. 展开更多

In this study, the effects of Zr-Ti combined deoxidation and AI deoxidation on the impact toughness of coarse- grained heat-affected zone in high-strength low-alloy steels were investigated. More fine oxides were formed in the Zr-Ti-killed steel than in Al-killed steel. It was also found that more acicular ferrite grains were formed in the coarse-grained heat-affected zone in the Zr-Ti-killed steel than in Al-killed steel. The impact toughness of coarse-grained heat-affected zone of Zr-Ti-kiUed steel was higher than that of Al-killed steel. The good impact toughness was attributable to the pinning effect of fine oxides and the formation of acicular ferrite grains on fine oxides. 展开更多

Excellent Heat Affected Zone Toughness Technology Improved by use of Strong Deoxidizers (ETISD Technology) has been developed by Baosteel. When deoxidation of molten steel is conducted at the precisely controlled oxygen concentrations, the formation of the micro-meter inclusions and the nano-meter precipitates in the steel plate can be effectively controlled. During the welding process with high-heat input, the formation of acicular ferrite can be selectively promoted with the aid of micro-meter inclusions; the growth of γ grain can also be selectively restrained by the pinning effect of nano-meter precipitates. After welding with high-heat input of 400 kJ/cm, excellent heat affected zone toughness can be obtained for the steel plates with both of the above microstructures, and the average absorbed energy is greater than 200 J for V notch Charpy impact test at -20℃ . 展开更多

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) in Ductile Irons (DI) is often required by foundries for practical manufacturing reasons. The mechanical properties of the welded structures are strongly dependent on their HAZ’s width. A model based on the behaviour of the ferritic matrix of high-Si DIs in order to make an approach in measuring their HAZ’s width is developed in this study. A series of thermal treatments on 3.35 and 3.75 wt% Si as-cast DIs and spot SMAWs is applied on these materials. The applied SMAWs are done on non-preheated and preheated samples (150℃ - 300℃). For welding we modify the amperage (100 - 140A). The micro-hardness Vickers changes in the ferrite of the as-cast samples and inside the HAZ of the welded ones can be attributed to the existence of residual stresses (RS) in the ferritic matrix and assist in estimating the HAZ’s width. 展开更多

The structural change in heat affected zone(HAZ)and its influence on properties of welded white cast iron have been investigated by means of thermal cycle simulation technique. The structure of the white cast iron at peak temperature 800℃ was examined as cementite in pearlitic matrix,of which the hardness and impact toughness are the lowest, while the struc- ture after cyclic heating at high peak temperature is mainly cementite together with twin martensite,of which the hardness and impact toughness are rather higher. The phase bounda- ries in the structure of low hardness are smooth and regular as well as with fine precipitates. Both the cleavage and interphase fracture were revealed in the structure of low hardness, while the transgranular fracture was found in those areas of higher hardness. 展开更多

The effect of simulated welding thermal cycle on the microstructure and impact toughness of heat affected zone (HAZ) in 2205 duplex stainless steel was investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and room temperature impact test. The results show that the morphology and volume fraction of austenite change greatly with heat input. The amount of residual austenite and grain boundary austenite (GBA) decreases while Widmanstatten austenite (WA) laths and intergranular austenite increase with the increase in heat input. Only the fine equiaxed austenite exists in the HAZ when the heat input is increased up to 61.8 kJ/cm. WA laths nucleate initially either at the ferrite and GBA phase boundaries or directly in ferrite grains and begin to decompose into diamond-shaped austenite with the heat input larger than 25.2 kJ/cm. The impact toughness shows a non-monotonic variation, which is related to the increase in austenite fraction and the formation and the decomposition of WA laths. 展开更多

Accurate thermal simulation is the key in the simulation approach to defining the unique microstructure and properties of the HAZ regions. Simulation enables an expansion of the volume of material char- acteristic of each H4Z region to a sufficient size for property determination. The combined influence of heat input, preheat temperature, plate thickness, and widing process on HAZ microstructure and properties relics on the accurate simulation of thermal cycles corresponding to different peak temperatures using an HAZ simulator like the Gleeble.Several computer programs have been developed to predict thermal excursions in various HAZ regions during welding. Some were developed based simply on the thermal propertics of a material;whereas, others were generated on the basis of actual experimental data.A suitable HAZ thermal simulation program must be ons that can authntically duplicate an ac- tual thermal cycle experienced during welding within reasonable limies. Therefore, the similarities and differences among the HAZ thermal cycles predicted by various methodologies should be fully under- stood. A total of sts thermal cycle prediction methodologies were compared in this evaluation. It was de- termined that some HAZ simulation programs have sever limitations due to the idealized assumptions considered in their development.According to the experieare at The University of Tennessee and the comparison results in this study, the HAZ thermal simulation programs; ' HAZ Calculator' and F(s, d); are recommended for accurate HAZ thermal cycle duplication. 展开更多

The mechanism of the improvement of heat affected zone(HAZ) toughness with nanometer precipitates is discussed in this paper. The austenite grain growth during welding process can be effectively prevented with the aid of the pinning effect of fine particles,so that the steel plate can be improved in large-heat input welding performance. The oxide metallurgy technology with strong deoxidizers is developed in Baosteel.Large number of nanometer precipitates are formed during deoxidation, solidification and phase transformation processes. With the pinning effect of these fine particles, after welding with large-heat input of 400 kJ/cm,the average austenite grain size is 61μm in HAZ,the average energy absorbed value is 142 J for V-notch Charpy test at - 20℃. 展开更多

In this essay, we studied how heat input affected the microstructure, hardness, grain size and heat-affected zone(HAZ) dimension of WCX355 ultra-fine grain steel which was welded respectively by the ultra narrow-gap welding (UNGW) process and the overlaying process with CO 2 as protective atmosphere and laser welding process. The experimental results show when the heat input changed from 1.65 kJ/cm to 5.93 kJ/cm, the width of its HAZ ranged from 0.6 mm to 2.1 mm.The average grain size grew up from 2~5 μm of base metal to 20~70 μm and found no obvious soften phenomenon in overheated zone. The width of normalized zone was generally wide as 2/3 as that of the whole HAZ, and the grain size in this zone is smaller than that in base metal. Under the circumstance of equal heat input, the HAZ width of UNGW is narrower than that of the laser welding. 展开更多

In this paper, a laboratory study has been made to develop low cost high performance steel plates with superior HAZ toughness for large heat input welding. Simulated results show that the absorbed impact energy of heat-affected zone (HAZ) at -20℃reaches above 200J when large heat inputs of 100 to 400kJ/cm were applied, suggestive of superior HAZ toughness for large heat input welding of developed steel plate. The microstructures in HAZ are transformed from mainly fine ferrite and bainite at 100kJ/cm, through an intermediate stage of ferrite, bainite and pearlite at 200 and 300kJ/cm, to nearly fine ferrite and pearlite at 400kJ/cm. The prior austenite grain size and ferrite grain size in HAZ are controlled to ~50 and ~20μm, respectively. The high HAZ toughness is due to the inhibition of prior austenite grain size at high temperatures and the formation of beneficial microstructures to HAZ toughness during continuous cooling. 展开更多

Microstructural characteristics of different sub-regions of heat affected zone (HAZ) of low welding crack susceptibility steel weldment were investigated by using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy equipped with electron backscattered diffraction system. And the focus was put on the correlation between microstructural characteristics and HAZ toughness of the weldment. The results reveal that the toughness of fusion line zone (FLZ) specimens is much lower than that of fine grained HAZ (FGHAZ) specimens. The coarse inclusions in the weld metal and the large martensite-austenite constituents in the coarse grained HAZ (CGHAZ) have an obvious negative effect on the crack initiation energy of FLZ. Meanwhile, the coarse granular bainite with large effective grain decreases the crack propagation energy seriously. By contrast, fine crystallographic grains in the FGHAZ play a key role in increasing toughness, especially in improving crack propagation energy. 展开更多

This paper presents the study carried out to study the microstructure and mechanical properties of AISI 304 stainless steel and gray iron, in order to recognize the effect of welding parameters on the joint. The shielded metal arc welding technique was applied with a 3.2 mm diameter nickel coated electrode under preheating and post heat conditions at 350°C. Vickers hardness test and metallographic analysis were carried out at the heat affected zone and at the interface to determine the effect on mechanical and metallurgical characteristics. Vickers hardness differences among joint areas were directly related to microstructural changes. There are no significant differences in AISI 304 hardness, but the hardness increased at the heat affected zone and decreased at the filler metal. Grey iron hardness at the heat affected zone was even lower and more slightly superior than grey iron hardness. 展开更多

Conventional fusion arc welding of high-strength quenched and tempered steel can be improved through the use of non-conventional laser beam welding. This article presents the investigations of autogenous bead on plate and butt CO2 Laser Welding (LW) of 7 mm thick high-strength quenched and tempered low alloy SM570 (JIS) steel plates. The influence of laser welding parameters, mainly welding speed, defocusing distance and shielding gas flow rate on the weld profile, i.e., weld zone penetration depth and width, microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints was determined. All welded joints showed smooth and uniform weld beads free from superficial porosity and undercuts. The selected best welding conditions were a laser power of 5.0 kW, welding speed of 500 mm/min, argon gas shielding flow rate of 30 L/min and a defocusing distance of -0.5 mm. It was observed that these conditions gave complete penetration and minimized the width of the weld bead. The microstructure of the welded joints was evaluated by light optical microscopy. The weld metal (WM) and heat-affected zone (HAZ) near weld metal achieved maximum hardness (355 HV). The tensile fractured samples showed the ductile mode of failure and ultimate tensile strength of 580 MPa. 展开更多

The weldability of the ZhS6U nickel-based superalloy, which is prone to solidification cracking during electron-beam welding(EBW) repair processes, was investigated. The effects of two different pre-weld heat-treatment cycles on the final microstructure before and after welding were examined. Welds were made on flat coupons using an EBW machine, and the two heat-treatment cycles were designed to reduce γ′ liquation before welding. Microstructural features were also examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the change in the morphology and size of the γ′ precipitates in the pre-weld heat-treatment cycles changed the ability of the superalloy to release the tensile stresses caused by the matrix phase cooling after EBW. The high hardness in the welded coupons subjected to the first heat-treatment cycle resulted in greater resistance to stress release by the base alloy, and the concentration of stress in the base metal caused liquation cracks in the heat-affected zone and solidification cracks in the weld area. 展开更多

Welding as a fabrication process is one of the vital production routes for most manufacturing industries. Several factors are involved in the choice of welding process for specific applications;notable among these are compositional range of the material to be welded, the thickness of the base materials and type of current. Most metals oxidize rapidly in their molten state, and therefore, the weld area needs to be protected from atmospheric contamination;this is achieved in gas tungsten arc welding GTAW by a shielding gas (argon, helium, nitrogen). GTAW technique is one of the major processes for joining austenitic stainless steels (ASS) and ferritic stainless steel (FSS) fabrication. However, the microstructural change that occurs during welding and at weld joint is still a major challenge today as it affects both the corrosion resistance and the mechanical properties. Therefore, this present paper reviews past research findings on GTA welding of ASS and FSS. Results of the findings have confirmed that, depending on the amount of heat input, which can be controlled by welding parameters (welding speed, voltage and current), welded joints particularly, heat affected zones (HAZs) of both grades of steels can undergo mechanical failure and can be susceptible to corrosion attack if the joints are produced with a less ideal combination of welding parameters. 展开更多
