Verification and validation of a numerical wave tank with momentum source wave generation

systematic verification and validation(V&V)of our previously proposed momentum source wave generation method is performed.Some settings of previous numerical wave tanks(NWTs)of regular and irregular waves have bee... systematic verification and validation(V&V)of our previously proposed momentum source wave generation method is performed.Some settings of previous numerical wave tanks(NWTs)of regular and irregular waves have been optimized.The H2-5 V&V method involving five mesh sizes with mesh refinement ratio being 1.225 is used to verify the NWT of regular waves,in which the wave height and mass conservation are mainly considered based on a Lv3(H s=0.75 m)and a Lv6(H s=5 m)regular wave.Additionally,eight different sea states are chosen to validate the wave height,mass conservation and wave frequency of regular waves.Regarding the NWT of irregular waves,five different sea states with significant wave heights ranging from 0.09 m to 12.5 m are selected to validate the statistical characteristics of irregular waves,including the profile of the wave spectrum,peak frequency and significant wave height.Results show that the verification errors for Lv3 and Lv6 regular wave on the most refined grid are−0.018 and−0.35 for wave height,respectively,and−0.14 and for−0.17 mass conservation,respectively.The uncertainty estimation analysis shows that the numerical error could be partially balanced out by the modelling error to achieve a smaller validation error by adjusting the mesh size elaborately.And the validation errors of the wave height,mass conservation and dominant frequency of regular waves under different sea states are no more than 7%,8% and 2%,respectively.For a Lv3(H_(s)=0.75 m)and a Lv6(H_(s)=5 m)regular wave,simulations are validated on the wave height in wave development section for safety factors FS≈1 and FS≈0.5-1,respectively.Regarding irregular waves,the validation errors of the significant wave height and peak frequency are both lower than 2%. 展开更多

This paper describes an investigation of the generation of desired sea states in a numerical wave model. Bimodal sea states containing energetic swell components can be coastal hazards along coastlines exposed to large oceanic fetches. Investigating the effects of long-period bimodal seas requires large computational domains and increased running time to ensure the development of the desired sea state. Long computational runs can cause mass stability issues due to the Stokes drift and wave reflection, which in turn affect results through the variation of the water level. A numerical wave flume, NEWRANS, was used to investigate two wave generation methods: the wave paddle method, allowing for a smaller domain; and the internal mass source function method, providing an open boundary allowing reflected waves to leave the domain. The two wave generation methods were validated against experimental data by comparing the wave generation accuracy and the variance of mass in the model during simulations. Results show that the wave paddle method not only accurately generates the desired sea state but also provides a more stable simulation, in which mass fluctuation has less of an effect on the water depth during the long-duration simulations. As a result, it is suggested that the wave paddle method with active wave absorption is preferable to the internal wave maker option when investigating intermediate-depth long-period bimodal seas for long-duration simulations. 展开更多

We theoretically investigate the characteristics of terahertz(THz) radiation from monolayer graphene exposed to normal incident few-cycle laser pulses, by numerically solving the extended semiconductor Bloch equations. Our simulations show that the THz spectra in low frequency regions are highly dependent on the carrier envelope phase(CEP) of driving laser pulses. Using an optimal CEP of few-cycle laser pulses, we can obtain broadband strong THz waves, due to the symmetry breaking of the laser-graphene system. Our results also show that the strength of the THz spectra depend on both the intensity and central wavelength of the laser pulses. The intensity dependence of the THz wave can be described by the excitation rate of graphene, while wavelength dependence can be traced back to the band velocity and the population of graphene. We find that a near single-cycle THz pulse can be obtained from graphene driven by a mid-infrared laser pulse. 展开更多

The underlying mechanism of the spectral cleaning effect of the cross-polarized wave(XPW) generation process was theoretically investigated. This study shows that the spectral noise of an input spectrum can be removed in the XPW generation process and that the spectral cleaning effect depends on the characteristics of the input pulses, such as the chirp and Fourier-transform-limited duration of the initial pulse, and the modulation amplitude and frequency of the spectral noise. Though these factors codetermine the output spectrum of the XPW generation process, the spectral cleaning effect is mainly affected by the initial pulse chirp. The smoothing of the spectrum in the XPW generation process leads to a significant enhancement of the coherent contrast. 展开更多

A novel scheme for high-efficiency terahertz(THz)wave generation based on optimized cascaded difference frequency generation(OCDFG)with planar waveguide is presented.The phase mismatches of each-order cascaded difference frequency generation(CDFG)are modulated by changing the thickness of the waveguide,resulting in a decrement of phase mismatches in cascaded Stokes processes and an increment of phase mismatches in cascaded anti-Stokes processes simultaneously.The modulated phase mismatches enhance the cascaded Stokes processes and suppress the cascaded anti-Stokes processes simultaneously,yielding energy conversion efficiencies over 25%from optical wave to THz wave at 100 K. 展开更多

High-efficiency terahertz(THz) wave generation with multiple frequencies by optimized cascaded difference frequency generation(OCDFG) is investigated at 100 K using a nonlinear crystal consisting of a periodically poled lithium niobate(PPLN) part and an aperiodically poled lithium niobate(APPLN) part.Two infrared pump waves with a frequency difference ω_(T1) generate THz waves and a series of cascaded optical waves in the PPLN part by cascaded difference frequency generation(CDFG).The generated cascaded optical waves with frequency interval ω_(T1) then further interact in the APPLN part by OCDFG,yielding the following two advantages.First,OCDFG in the APPLN part is efficiently stimulated by inputting multi-order cascaded optical waves rather than the only two intense infrared pump waves,yielding unprecedented energy conversion efficiencies in excess of 37% at 1 THz at 100 K.Second,THz waves with M timesω_(T1) are generated by mixing the mth-order and the(m+M)th-order cascaded optical waves by designing poling period distributions of the APPLN part. 展开更多

A two-dimensional (2D) numerical model is developed for the wave sim- ulation and propagation in a wave flume. The fluid flow is assumed to be viscous and incompressible, and the Navier-Stokes and continuity equations are used as the governing equations. The standard k-e model is used to model the turbulent flow. The Navier- Stokes equations are discretized using the staggered grid finite difference method and solved by the simplified marker and cell (SMAC) method. Waves are generated and propagated using a piston type wave maker. An open boundary condition is used at the end of the numerical flume. Some standard tests, such as the lid-driven cavity, the constant unidirectional velocity field, the shearing flow, and the dam-break on the dry bed, are performed to valid the model. To demonstrate the capability and accuracy of the present method, the results of generated waves are compared with available wave theories. Finally, the clustering technique (CT) is used for the mesh generation, and the best condition is suggested. 展开更多

Finite element simulations of nonlinear Lamb wave propagation are performed for Lamb wave mode pairs with exact and approximate phase velocity matching, with and without group velocity matching, respectively. The evolution of time-domain second harmonic Lamb waves is analyzed with the propagation distance. The amplitudes of primary and second harmonic waves are calculated to characterize the acoustic nonlinearity. The results verify that phase velocity matching is necessary for generation of the cumulative second harmonic Lamb wave in numerical perspective, while group velocity matching is demonstrated to not be a necessary condition. 展开更多

The effect of second-harmonic generation (SHG) by primary (fundamental) circumferential guided wave (CGW) propagation is investigated from a numerical standpoint. To enable that the second harmonic of the primary CGW mode can accumulate along the circumferential direction, an appropriate mode pair of primary and double frequency CGWs is chosen. Finite element simulations and evaluations of nonlinear CGW propagation are analyzed for the selected CGW mode pair. The numerical simulations performed directly demonstrate that the response of SHG is completely generated by the desired primary CGW mode that satisfies the condition of phase velocity matching at a specific driving frequency, and that the second harmonic of the primary CGW mode does have a cumulative effect with circumferential angles. The numerical perspective obtained yields an insight into the complicated physical process of SHG of primary CGW propagation unavailable previously. 展开更多

The experimental observation of cumulative second-harmonic generation of the primary circumferential guided wave propagation is reported. A pair of wedge transducers is used to generate the primary circumferential guided wave desired and to detect its fundamental-frequency and second-harmonic amplitudes on the outside surface of the circular tube. The amplitudes of the fundamental waves and the second harmonics of the circumferential guided wave propagation are measured for different separations between the two wedge transducers. At the driving frequency where the primary and the double-frequency circumferential guided waves have the same linear phase velocities, the clear second-harmonic signals can be observed. The quantitative relationships between the second-harmonic amplitudes and circumferential angle are analyzed. It is experimentally verified that the second harmonics of primary circumferential guided waves do have a cumulative growth effect with the circumferential angle. 展开更多

We analyze the effect of second-harmonic generation(SHG) of primary Lamb wave propagation in a two-layered composite plate, and then investigate the influence of interfacial properties on the said effect at low frequency. It is found that changes in the interfacial properties essentially affect the dispersion relation and then the maximum cumulative distance of the double-frequency Lamb wave generated. This will remarkably influence the efficiency of SHG. To overcome the complications arising from the inherent dispersion and multimode natures in analyzing the SHG effect of Lamb waves, the present work focuses on the analysis of the SHG effect of low-frequency dilatational Lamb wave propagation. Both the numerical analysis and finite element simulation indicate that the SHG effect of low-frequency dilatational Lamb wave propagation is found to be much more sensitive to changes in the interfacial properties than primary Lamb waves. The potential of using the SHG effect of low-frequency dilatational Lamb waves to characterize a minor change in the interfacial properties is analyzed. 展开更多

Considering the high sensitivity of the nonlinear ultrasonic measurement technique and great advantages of the guided wave testing method, the use of nonlinear ultrasonic guided waves provides a promising means for evaluating and characterizing the hidden and/or inaccessible damage/degradation in solid media. Increasing attention on the development of the testing method based on nonlinear ultrasonic guided waves is largely attributed to the theoretical advances of nonlinear guided waves propagation in solid media. One of the typical acoustic nonlinear responses is the generation of second harmonics that can be used to effectively evaluate damage/degradation in materials/structures. In this paper, the theoretical progress of second-harmonic generation(SHG) of ultrasonic guided wave propagation in solid media is reviewed. The advances and developments of theoretical investigations on the effect of SHG of ultrasonic guided wave propagation in different structures are addressed. The South China Sea is rich in wind and wave energy resources,and the wind-wave combined power generation device is currently in the concept research and development stage.In recent years,extreme sea conditions such as super typhoons have frequently occurred,which poses a serious challenge to the safety of offshore floating platforms.In view of the lack of safety analysis of wind-wave combined power generation devices in extreme sea conditions at present,this paper takes the OC4-WEC combined with semi-submersible wind turbine(Semi-OC4)and the oscillating buoy wave energy converter as the research object,and establishes a mesoscale WRF-SWANFVCOM(W-S-F)real-time coupling platform based on the model coupling Toolkit(MCT)to analyze the spatial and temporal evolution of wind-wave-current in offshore wind farms during the whole process of super typhoon“Rammasun”transit.Combined with the medium/small scale nested method,the flow field characteristics of OC4-WEC platform are analyzed.The results show that the simulation accuracy of the established W-S-F platform for typhoon track is 42.51%higher than that of the single WRF model.Under the action of typhoon-wave-current,the heave motion amplitude of OC4-WEC platform is reduced by 38.1%,the surge motion amplitude is reduced by 26.7%,and the pitch motion amplitude is reduced by 23.4%. 展开更多

When studying the harbor water tranquility, cases are often confronted as that the verification point is not located on the generation line or that the angle between the generation line and the isobath is so large that the differences of the wave climates along the generation line can not be ignored. For these cases, the incident boundary conditions are difficult to evaluate. In order to solve this problem, a combined wave model is developed in the present paper based on the Boussinesq equation and the wave action balance equation. Instead of the one-line wave generation method, a multi-line generation method is proposed for the combined model. Application of this method is given to a case that the harbor is designed with two entrances and the angle between the generation line and the isobath is large and the results are shown reasonable. We suggest that the wave generation method on multi-lines might also be introduced to the wave physical model as the replacement for the one-line generation method. 展开更多

Based on the Navier-Stokes Equations (NSE), numerical simulation with fine grids is conducted to simulate the coastal surface wave changes, including wave generation, propagation, transformation and interactions between waves and structures. This numerical model has been tested for the generation of the desired incident waves, including both regular and random waves. Some numerical results of this model are compared with available experimental data. In order to apply this model to actual cases, boundary conditions are considered in detail for different shoreline types (beach or breakwater, slope or vertical wall, etc. ). Finally, the utility of the model to a real coastal area is shown by applying it to a fishing port located in Shidao, Rongcheng, Shandong Province, P.R. China. 展开更多
