Red mud(RM) is an industrial solid waste produced during the extraction of alumina from bauxite.The strong alkaline and heavy metal leaching issues are the primary factors limiting its utilization.This paper proposes a method for dealkalization and chromium(Cr) removal by repeated freeze and thaw to enhance the comprehensive utilization rate of RM.This study focused on the Bayer RM and investigated the effects of freeze-thaw(FT)-acid washing(AW) for dealkalization and Cr removal.The variables were the eluent concentration and FT cycles.The results showed that the synergistic action of FT-AW significantly improved the efficiency of dealkalization and Cr removal.After five FT cycles with 0.5 mol/L oxalic acid,the dealkalization and Cr removal rates reached 97.5% and 65.38%,respectively,16.1% and 7.40% higher than those achieved at room temperature.The repeated FT disrupted the structure of the RM particles,leading to an increase in the pore space between the soil particles.This enables complete eluent contact and reaction with Cr and alkali,thereby enhancing the removal rate.The FT-AW process is suitable for practical engineering applications.It offers a novel method for RM dealkalization and Cr removal by using the FT alternation phenomena in seasonally frozen regions. 展开更多

A comprehensive analysis was performed on 30 healthy female participants to assess the impact of fragranced body washes on mood improvement.The study examined their objective electroencephalographic (EEG) changes and subjective feedback before and after using the fragranced products.The results showed that both the alpha and theta band activities of the participants increased significantly after using body washes,especially in the occipito-parietal and frontal area of brain,indicating that their brains were at a higher level of stability and relaxation.Meanwhile,in terms of subjective evaluation,the participants’ subjective feelings such as calmness,relaxation,tranquility,and calmness were significantly enhanced.This study has revealed the efficacy of fragranced products in improving mood and is expected to provide support for the development and application of fragranced products. 展开更多

Remediation of a Pb and Cd-contaminated clayey soil via magnetic-enhanced washing

The contact between contaminant and washing solution is a fundamental factor that limits the contaminant removal efficiency of chemical washing.In this study,the magnetization technique was employed to improve the physicochemical properties of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid(EDTA)solutions for the removal of lead(Pb)and cadmium(Cd)from a contaminated clayey soil.Furthermore,EDTA concentration,magnetization strength,and magnetization time were varied as parameters for enhancing the contact between contaminant and washing solution to improve remediation efficiency.The results showed that after magnetization,the viscosities,surface tensions,and contact angles of EDTA solutions decreased,whereas the electrical conductivity and pH increased.In particular,the viscosities of high-concentration EDTA solutions increased with increasing magnetic field strength and magnetization time.The magnetized EDTA solutions increased the maximum removal rates of Cd and Pb by 64.46% and 35.49%,respectively,compared to the unmagnetized EDTA solutions.The results highlighted the efficient metal removal by magnetized washing solutions due to the better contact between the washing solutions and the contaminants.The magnetic-enhanced soil washing method was proven to be efficient,cost-effective,and easily implementable for enhancing heavy metal removal.This study provides a valuable reference for improving the efficiency of chemical washing for heavy metal-contaminated clayey soils. 展开更多

Cost Assessment for Oncology Patients: Sodium Bicarbonate 2% Oral Solution Mouth Wash for Mucositis

Background: Chemotherapy induced mucositis is one of the deterring factors influencing adherence to cancer treatment. Sodium bicarbonate mouth wash was recently shown to increase patients’ compliance. However, the cost implication of this strategy was never explored. Aim: This study is designed to explore the compounding of sodium bicarbonate 2% mouth wash from sodium bicarbonate powder USP and commercially procured intravenous solution, and to determine the estimated cost implication for patients using this strategy. Materials and Methods: Sodium bicarbonate 2% were compounded using commercially procured sterile intravenous 8.4% solution and powder USP, diluted and dissolved in sterile water for irrigation respectively. The estimated cost savings between the 2 methods were compared to each other as well as to savings from when used in preventing or in adjuvant therapy for chemotherapy induced mucositis. Ethical approval not required by UVA Institutional Review Board. Study conducted according to the International Standards of Good Practice. Result: We came up with a new recipe, sodium bicarbonate 2% mouth wash using commercially procured sterile liquid formulation. Due to shortage, we compounded with sodium bicarbonate powder USP. Using USP 795 regulation, we assigned 14 days beyond use date with refrigeration to these formulations. These formulations resulted in estimated cost savings of $3597.52 and $3686.56 respectively if patients were to be treated for chemotherapy induced mucositis for 21 days. When compared to commercially procured sterile liquid formulation, the use of powder USP, will lead to additional estimated 60 to 66.67% savings for patients. Conclusion: By using sodium bicarbonate powder or solution to compound a 2% mouth wash, we came up with a cheap product that could be used by patients in the moment in the hospital. We were also able to suggest ways that an estimated cost savings for patients undergoing cancer treatment that use this product can be computed. 展开更多

Herein,a new method was developed for efficient and lasting fluorescent whitening cotton fabric by synthesizing and using a vinyl-containing fluorescent whitening agent to covalently grafting onto fiber surfaces with the assistance of electron beam irradiation.The results from FT-IR spectroscopic,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic,and energy dispersive spectrometric analyses showed that the fluorescent whitening agent was successfully anchored on cotton fiber via radiation-induced grafting copolymerization.The optimized whiteness value at 110.81(that of raw cotton fabric,74.50)was achieved using just 0.3 wt% fluorescent whitening agent.Notably,the whiteness value of the treated cotton fabric remained 110+even after 100 equivalent home-washing cycles,substantiating its excellent washing durability.Skin stimulation experiments on rabbits showed that the primary stimulation index of all experimental groups was 0 and no abnormal clinical symptoms were found in all tested rabbits,demonstrating the outstanding skin safety.Furthermore,energy generated by irradiation grafting technology was much lower than that of traditional processes and water consumption greatly reduced.Even the effluent from this process completely met the discharge standard of industrial wastewater without any treatment.This study explores a new method for textile finishing via electron beam irradiation,providing a green and sustainable perspective for the textile industry. 展开更多

Clinical Study on Modified Sihu Powder for Fumigation and Washing in Promoting Wound Healing after Perianal Abscess Surgery

[Objectives]To investigate the use of the classical Chinese medicine formula Sihu Powder modified decoction for postoperative fumigation and sitz bath in patients with perianal abscess,aiming to promote wound healing and reduce medical burden.[Methods]An observational cohort study was conducted,selecting 200 patients with perianal abscess who underwent surgery in Shenzhen Guangming District People's Hospital.They were randomly divided into a treatment group and an observation group,with 100 cases in each group.Both groups followed the same surgical and antibiotic treatment principles.Starting from the first postoperative day,the treatment group received fumigation and sitz bath with modified Sihu Powder for decoction twice daily;the observation group used Compound Huangbai Liquid for fumigation and sitz bath twice daily.Indicators including pain score,wound secretion score,wound granulation tissue growth score,multidrug-resistant bacterial infection clearance rate,antibiotic usage days,and wound healing rate were observed in both groups 7,14 and 21 d after operation.[Results]On postoperative day 7,the differences in postoperative pain score,wound secretions,and multidrug-resistant bacterial clearance rate between the treatment group and the observation group were statistically significant.On postoperative day 14,the differences between the two groups were significant in indicators including pain score,wound secretions,wound granulation tissue growth,multidrug-resistant bacterial clearance rate,and wound healing rate.On postoperative day 21,the difference in wound healing rate between the two groups was significant;furthermore,the antibiotic usage days in the treatment group were significantly fewer than those in the observation group.[Conclusions]Modified Sihu Powder for fumigation and washing can effectively alleviate postoperative pain in perianal abscess patients,inhibit the colonization and infection of multidrug-resistant bacteria at the wound site,accelerate wound healing,reduce antibiotic usage intensity and medical burden.It possesses advantages such as being economical,effective,safe,and easy to operate,making it worthy of clinical promotion. 展开更多

Accurate determination of clay contents in Shanghai soils

The nine typical Shanghai soils are usually silty clay or clay,which appears inconsistent with their low clay content in the relevant publications.The literature review shows that the documented clay content of Shanghai soils ranges from 0%to 30.8%by weight.This inconsistency may stem from two factors:(1)the Shanghai soil classification system relies solely on the plasticity index for soil naming;and(2)the conventional steel sieving method cannot separate the clay from the fine soils(clay and silt mixtures).This paper aims to accurately determine the clay content in Shanghai soils.It uses nylon cloth sieves with apertures ranging from 0.063 mm to 0.0008 mm and completely separates the clay particles from the fine soils.The nine typical Shanghai soils are tested and sieved into distinct subgroups of clay,silt,sand,and gravel particles.Results demonstrate clay content ranges from 18.99%to 79.33%,substantially higher than literature values and consistent with their names of either silty clay or clay.Macro,micro,and scanning electron microscope(SEM)images reveal effective separation of clay,silt,sand,and gravel particles.The clay exhibits cohesive properties,while the silt,sand,and gravel comprise clean,non-cohesive individual particles.The clay and silt fractions are confirmed to be within their respective sieving limits by SEM-based particle size measurements.Additionally,Atterberg limits testing highlights the high plasticity of the clay particles and the non-plastic nature of the silt particles. 展开更多

A growing global demand exists to formulate plans to lessen the greenhouse gas emissions produced by agricultural activities.The purpose of this study was to uncovered the changes in soil CO_(2)fluxes under varying scenarios including nitrogen fertilization rates,irrigation rates,and air temperatures in the Hetao Irrigation District(HID)over the 38-year period.DAYCENT model was used to predict carbon dioxide(CO_(2))fluxes from cultivated soils in the HID,Inner Mongolia from^(2)023 to 2060(the year of achieving the"carbon neutrality"goal)in this study.Results showed that mean soil CO_(2)fluxes in the sunflower field[1035.13 g/(m^(2).yr)]were significantly lower than those in the maize field[1405.54 g/(m^(2).yr)].An increase in nitrogen fertilization rate led to a significant escalation in soil CO_(2)fluxes.Moreover,elevating irrigation rates for washing salts by irrigation(WSBI)diminished soil CO_(2)fluxes in the sunflower field while amplifying them in the maize field.A rise in air temperature resulted in an increase in soil CO_(2)fluxes from the maize field,with annual increases observed,but a reduction in soil CO_(2)fluxes from the sunflower field.The sunflower fields in the HID have a more substantial advantage than the corn fields in mitigating soil CO_(2)emissions. 展开更多

BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD)is closely associated with the intestinal bacteria composition and their metabolites.AIM To investigate whether washed microbiota transplantation(WMT)improves symptoms of nonerosive reflux disease(NERD)with proton pump inhibitor(PPI)dependency.METHODS Patients with recurrent NERD and PPI dependency at the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Pharmaceutical University from 2017 to 2018 were included and divided into a WMT or PPI group treated with PPI with/without WMT.The endpoint was NERD symptom frequency evaluated 1 mo after WMT using reflux disease questionnaire(RDQ)and GERD questionnaire(GERDQ)scores,remission time,PPI dose,and the examination of intestinal mucosal barrier function.RESULTS In the WMT(n=15)and PPI(n=12)groups,the total remission rate at 1 mo after treatment was 93.3%vs 41.7%.Compared with the PPI group,the WMT group showed better results in GERDQ(P=0.004)and RDQ(P=0.003)and in remission months(8 vs 2,P=0.002).The PPI dose was reduced to some extent for 80%of patients in the WMT group and 33.3%in the PPI group.In 24 patients,intestinal mucosal barrier function was examined before treatment,and changes in the degree of damage were observed in 13 of these patients after treatment.Only one of the 15 patients had minor side effects,including a mushy stool two or three times a day,which resolved on their own after 1 wk.CONCLUSION This study is the first to demonstrate that WMT may be safe and effective for relieving NERD symptoms and reducing PPI dependency and recurrence. 展开更多

Objective:Coronavirus disease 2019(COVTD-19)is often accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms,which are related to gut microbiota dysbiosis(GMD).Whether washed microbiota transplantation(WMT)is an effective treatment for COV1D-19 patients suspected of having GMD by restoring the gut microbiota is unknown.This study is designed to explore the efficacy and safety of WMT in COVID-19 patients suspected of having GMD.Methods:This is a randomized,multicenter,single-blind prospective study.COVID-19 patients suspected of having GMD will be randomly divided to receive routine treatment only or to receive routine treatment and WMT.The frequency of WMT will be once a day for three consecutive days.Laboratory and imaging examinations will be performed at admission,1 and 2 weeks after treatment,and on the day of discharge.Then a telephone follow-up will be conducted at 1st week,2nd week,and 6th month after discharge.The clinical efficacy and safety of WMT in COVD-19 patients suspected of having GMD and the effects of WMT on the organ function,homeostasis,inflammatory response,intestinal mucosal barrier function,and immunity of the patients will be evaluated.Results:By following the proposed protocol,WMT is expected to be efficacious and safe for the treatment of COVID-19 patients suspected of having GMD,and the therapeutic effect is expected to be associated with improvement of the intestinal mucosal barrier function,inflammatory response,and immunity.Conclusion:The findings from this study may offer a new approach for the prevention and treatment of COVID-19 patients suspected of having GMD. 展开更多

Both the garments are treated with the same washing process. Also, some physical properties have been investigated for both washed garments such as Washing Effect Test, Tear Strength Test, GSM Test, and Rubbing Test. Then a comparative study has been done on both washed garments. The appearance of washed corduroy garments is satisfactory. The physical properties also show a better result. BACKGROUND Previous studies have found that hyperuricaemia(HUA)is closely related to intestinal flora imbalance.AIM The current study investigated the effects and safety of washed microbiota transplantation(WMT)on serum uric acid(SUA)levels in different populations.METHODS A total of 144 patients who received WMT from July 2016 to April 2020 in the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangdong Pharmaceutical University and had SUA data before treatment were selected.Changes in SUA levels before and after treatment were retrospectively reviewed based on short-term and mid-term effects of WMT regimens.SUA levels measured in the last test within 3 mo after the first WMT represented the short-term effect,and SUA levels measured in the last test within 3-6 mo after the first WMT represented the mid-term effect.The patients were divided into an HUA group(SUA>416μM)and a normal uric acid(NUA)group(SUA≥202μM to≤416μM)based on pretreatment SUA levels.RESULTS Average short-term SUA levels in the HUA group decreased after WMT(481.00±99.85 vs 546.81±109.64μM,n=32,P<0.05)in 25/32 patients and returned to normal in 10/32 patients.The shortterm level of SUA reduction after treatment moderately correlated with SUA levels before treatment(r=0.549,R²=0.300,P<0.05).Average SUA levels decreased after the first and second courses of WMT(469.74±97.68 vs 540.00±107.16μM,n=35,and 465.57±88.88 vs 513.19±78.14μM,n=21,P<0.05).Short-term and mid-term SUA levels after WMT and SUA levels after the first,second and third courses of WMT were similar to the levels before WMT in the NUA group(P>0.05).Only 1/144 patients developed mild diarrhea after WMT.CONCLUSION WMT reduces short-term SUA levels in patients with HUA with mild side effects but has no obvious effect on SUA levels in patients with NUA. 展开更多

The coupling of washing with adsorption process can be adopted for the treatment of soils contaminated with heavy metals pollution.However,the complex environment of soil and the competitive behavior of leaching chemicals considerably restrain adsorption capacity of adsorbent material during washing process,which demands a higher resistance of the adsorbents to interference.In this study,we synthesized strongly magnetic,high specific surface area(573.49 m^(2)/g)UiO66 composites(i.e.,UiO66-Fe_(3)O_(4))using hydrothermal process.The UiO66-Fe_(3)O_(4) was applied as an adsorbent during the ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid(EDTA)-assisted washing process of contaminated soil.The incorporation of UiO66-Fe_(3)O_(4)results in rapid heavy metal removal and recovery from the soil under low concentrations of washing agent(0.001 mol/L)with reduced residual heavy metal mobility of soil after remediation.Furthermore,UiO66-Fe_(3)O_(4)can quickly recollect by an external magnet,which offers a simple and inexpensive recovery method for heavy metals from contaminated soil.Overall,UiO66-Fe_(3)O_(4)configuration with EDTA-assisted washing process showed opportunities for heavy metals contaminated sites. 展开更多

Greenwashing behaviors(GWBs)in green finance products(GFPs)by enterprises seriously hinder the realization of environmental protection goals.However,methods for effectively regulating GWBs in GFPs are unclear.This study constructed a tripartite evolutionary game model to analyze the formation and governance mechanisms of GWBs in GFPs among regulatory authorities,enterprises,and investors.Subsequently,the stability equilibrium strategy and key factors influencing the system equilibrium were discussed.Several interesting conclusions were drawn.First,we demonstrated that an interdependence mechanism exists among three game agents who mutually influence each other.The larger the probability of regulatory authorities choosing active supervision and investors adopting feedback,the more enterprises are willing to carry out green projects.Second,three corresponding governance modes for GWBs were put forward following the developmental stages of GFPs.Among these,the collaboration mode is the most effective in incentivizing enterprises to implement green projects.Third,based on sensitivity simulations,the initial willingness of the tripartite stakeholders,investor feedback cost,investor compensation,the penalty for greenwashing enterprises,and the reputational benefit of enterprises are critical factors that influence evolutionary results.Finally,targeted countermeasures were provided for regulatory authorities to prevent enterprises from engaging in GWBs. 展开更多

Improved efficiency and stability of inverse perovskite solar cells via passivation cleaning

Amidst the global energy and environmental crisis,the quest for efficient solar energy utilization intensifies.Perovskite solar cells,with efficiencies over 26%and cost-effective production,are at the forefront of research.Yet,their stability remains a barrier to industrial application.This study introduces innovative strategies to enhance the stability of inverted perovskite solar cells.By bulk and surface passivation,defect density is reduced,followed by a"passivation cleaning"using Apacl amino acid salt and isopropyl alcohol to refine film surface quality.Employing X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscope(SEM),and atomic force microscopy(AFM),we confirmed that this process effectively neutralizes surface defects and curbs non-radiative recombination,achieving 22.6%efficiency for perovskite solar cells with the composition Cs_(0.15)FA_(0.85)PbI_(3).Crucially,the stability of treated cells in long-term tests has been markedly enhanced,laying groundwork for industrial viability. 展开更多
