Understanding the fracture behavior of vertical cracks in piezoelectric semiconductor(PS)structures is vital due to their impacts on device reliability.This study establishes a model for a PS strip with a vertical crack under combined mechanical and electric loading,considering both central and edge cracks.Using Fourier transforms and dislocation density functions,the Mode-Ⅲproblem is converted to Cauchy-type singular integral equations.The crack surface fields,intensity factors,and energy release rate are derived.The accuracy of the proposed model is verified through the finite element(FE)simulation via COMSOL Multiphysics.The results for low electron concentrations align with those of the intrinsic piezoelectric materials,validating the correctness of the present model as well.The combined effects of crack position,applied electric loading,and initial carrier concentration on the crack propagation are analyzed.The normalized electric displacement factor shows heightened sensitivity to crack size,electromechanical loading,and carrier concentration.The crack position significantly influences the crack surface fields and normalized intensity factors due to the boundary proximity effect. 展开更多

The thermal stability and failure mechanism of thick thermal barrier coatings(TBCs) with and without vertical type cracks were investigated through the cyclic thermal exposure and thermal-shock tests. The TBC systems with thickness of about 2000 μm in the top coat were prepared by an air plasma spray(APS) on the bond coat of about 150 μm in thickness prepared by APS. The adhesive strength values of the as-prepared TBCs with and without vertical type cracks were determined to be 24.7 and 11.0 MPa, respectively, indicating the better interface stability in the TBC with vertical type cracks. The TBC with vertical type cracks shows a better thermal durability than that without vertical type cracks in the thermal cyclic exposure and thermal-shock tests. The hardness values of the as-prepared TBCs with and without vertical type cracks were found to be 6.6 and 5.3 GPa, respectively, which were increased to 9.5 and 5.5 GPa, respectively, after the cyclic thermal exposure tests. These results indicate that the vertical type cracks developed in the top coat are important in improving the lifetime performance of thick TBC in high temperature environment. 展开更多

Two RCF short cracks, including vertical short crack and ratcheting short crack initiated from ratcheting, were observed. The behavior of both RCF cracks was analyzed in detail. To improve the current grinding procedure of the back-up roll of CVC hot rolling mills so that the back-up roll service life can be extended, the crack initiation and propagation behavior of medium carbon bainitic back-up roll steel was investigated, a kind of asperity-scale, surface originated vertical short cracks occurred at 5 × 10^2 -1 × 10^4 cycles. Theoretical analysis indicated that the maximum tensile stress occurring at the back edge of the contact of asperities keeps at above 1 347. 97 MPa, and ratcheting and cyclic plastic deformation take place at such sites within 1 × 10^4 cycles. The early initiation of the vertical short cracks is caused by the asperity contact. According to the crack initiation mechanism, short crack behavior and preventive grinding strategy, steel consumption can be reduced considerably by decreasing the surface roughness and removing the asperity influenced surface thin layer at about 70%-80% of the surface distress life. 展开更多

Plasma spray-physical vapor deposition(i.e.,PS-PVD)is a promising method for obtaining advanced environmental barrier coatings(EBCs).The EBCs must meet some requirements in the application,in which the thermal cycle performance affects the service lifetime.The preparation of artificial vertical cracks in Yb_(2)SiO_(5) coatings is an effective approach for meeting the requirements above because vertical cracks provide a strain tolerance.To clarify the formation mechanism of vertical cracks during the PSPVD,the effects of coating thickness and substrate temperature on the formation of vertical cracks were investigated.In addition,the interactions of spray powder and plasma flame during coating deposition were also characterized by optical spectroscopy.It is indicated that vertical cracks are formed due to a thermal expansion mismatch between Yb_(2)SiO_(5) and mullite coating,transient cooling after deposition and the nucleation of evaporated Yb_(2)SiO_(5) as well. 展开更多
