For the measurement of atmospheric NO2 vertical column density (VCD), Kitt Peak Solar Flux Atlas can be substituted as an extraterrestrial solar radiation. Compared with differential analysis method, the Taylor expansion of integrated transfer equation underestimates the VCD. This underestimation is as large as 35% when the amount of NO2 is 1 × 1017 cm?2 and observation is conducted with an air mass factor of 10. Even when the VCD is 2 × 1016 cm?2 and the air mass factor is 4, the relative error of the retrieved VCD is still no less than 3%. If the observation is restricted under the small air mass factor condition (≤ 4), with Kitt Peak Solar spectrum as an extraterrestrial solar radiation, only an atmospheric layer of 2 km thick from ground can be studied, which will make the absorption too weak to be detected by normal instruments. The VCD in winter Tokyo area was observed and analyzed by differential method, which shows a good precision even when the absorption is as low as 3%. The largest average VCD was about 1.3 × 1017 cm-2, and the lowest was about 1.3 × 1016 cm?2. The trend of its variation was almost the same as the ground level observation by Saltzman reagent method. Spatio-temporal Distributions of Tropospheric NO_2 over Oases in Taklimakan Desert, China

Soil biogenic NO emission is one of the most important sources of atmospheric nitrogen oxides(NOx) worldwide. However, the estimation of soil source, especially in arid areas presents large uncertainties because of the substantial lack of measurements. In this study, we selected the Ruoqiang oases on the southeastern edge of the Taklimakan Desert, China as the study area and applied Ozone Monitoring Instrument(OMI) NO2 retrievals(DOMINO v2.0, 2005–2011) to investigate the spatial distribution and seasonal variations in tropospheric NO2 vertical column density(VCD). High NO2 VCDs were observed over the oases(farmlands and natural vegetation), with the highest value obtained during summer, and lowest during winter. Pulses were observed during spring. We conducted in-situ measurements in June 2011 in Milan oasis and employed ground-based multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy(MAX-DOAS) instruments to validate satellite NO2 retrievals. The findings are as follows: 1) in the study area soil biogenic NO emission is the dominant source of tropospheric NO2; 2) oases(farmlands) are hotspots of tropospheric NO2, and a higher increase in tropospheric NO2 is found in oases from winter to summer; and 3) enhancement of soil biogenic NO emission due to soil managements is predictable. Given the rapid agricultural development in the southern Uygur Autonomous Region of Xinjiang, researches on soil biogenic NO emission and increase in tropospheric NOx should be given more importance. 展开更多

An airborne multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopic (AMAX-DOAS) instrument was developed and applied to measure tropospheric NO2 in the Pearl River Delta region in the south of China. By combining the measurements in nadir and zenith directions and analyzing the UV and visible spectral region using the DOAS method, information about tropospheric NO2 vertical columns was obtained. Strong tropospheric NO2 signals were detected when flying over heavilly polluted regions and point sources like plants. The AMAX-DOAS results were compared with ground-based MAX-DOAS observations in the southwest of Zhuhai city using the same parameters for radiative transport calculations. The difference in vertical column data between the two instruments is about 8%. Our data were also compared with those from OMI and fair agreement was obtained with a correlation coefficient R of 0.61. The difference between the two instruments can be attributed to the different spatial resolution and the temporal mismatch during the measurements. 展开更多

A new kind of governing equations for water hammer based on the elasticcolumn theory was proposed and adopted to analyse water hammer phenomenon in the pipe system with avertical column surge chamber and water level fluctuation in the surge chamber during pressuretransient. The wrongness existing in the classical governing equations for water hammer wasanalysed. A typical reservoir-valve pipe system was chosen as an example to verify the new governingequations numerically and experimentally. The finite difference method based on the method ofcharacteristics was used to solve numerically the nonlinear characteristic equations. The temporalevolutions of transient volume flux and head and of water level fluctuation for various surgechamber configurations were worked out, assuming that the air in the surge chamber are compressible.The relevant experiment was conducted to verify the new governing equations and numerical method.The numerical and experimental results show that the new governing equations are valid and theconventional assumption that the pressure head at the base of a surge chamber equals that of thestatic head above it during pressure transient is not always valid. The surge chamber generallyreises the period of transient pressure wave in pipe system, reduces the maximum pressure envelopeand lifts the minimum envelope substantially. The water level fluctuation in the surge chamber wasnumerically and experimentally observed. Increasing the size of the surge chamber and/or decreasingthe initial air pressure in the surge chamber enhance the effectiveness of the surge chamber insuppressing pressure wave. 展开更多
