Effect of grassland mosaic structure and dynamism on the reproductive habitat suitability for Alectoris graeca in central Apennines

Over the last several decades,the Mediterranean region has been subjected to mountain abandonment and farming cessation,leading to changes in vegetation and coenological features of grasslands,contextually to the strong decline of the rock partridge(Alectoris graeca).Our hypothesis was that the ongoing dynamic processes leading to the compositional changes of grasslands in central Apennines affect the habitat suitability for the singing male(territorial male defending its reproductive site).In 2015,we defined the presence/absence of spring territorial singing males in seven sites(1,250-2,400 m a.s.l.),by the census in 74 playback stations,distributed along 15 transects.We characterized the topography and the vegetation mosaic of such sites according to the collected topographic and vegetation cover data in 59 randomly selected plots(100 m×100 m)along the transects.To understand the relations among the environmental variables and the effect of the composition and dynamism of the vegetation mosaics on the presence/absence of the singing male,we used principal components analysis and generalized linear mixed-effect modelling.Our results emphasized the marked overlap between the general environmental conditions,which proved to define the habitat suitability for A.graeca,and the characteristics of the site chosen by the singing male for starting the reproductive activities.Moreover,we found that the site suitability for the singing male decreases when the vegetation recovery processes are ongoing,because of the spread of coarse tall grassesdominated communities and/or grassland types with dense turf.Tall grass-dominated communities and thick-turf grasslands exert their negative effect decreasing the habitat suitability for the singing male starting from low cover values.Therefore,it is conceivable that singing male’s suitable habitat will be dramatically restricted to the steepest south-facing slopes,where topographic and soil conditions do not allow the spread of grasslands with dense turf and of invasive/dominant tall grasses,increasing the threat to the species due to the effect of climate change on the vegetation features. 展开更多

Accurately simulating the soil nitrogen(N)cycle is crucial for assessing food security and resource utilization efficiency.The accuracy of model predictions relies heavily on model parameterization.The sensitivity and uncertainty of the simulations of soil N cycle of winter wheat-summer maize rotation system in the North China Plain(NCP)to the parameters were analyzed.First,the N module in the Vegetation Interface Processes(VIP)model was expanded to capture the dynamics of soil N cycle calibrated with field measurements in three ecological stations from 2000 to 2015.Second,the Morris and Sobol algorithms were adopted to identify the sensitive parameters that impact soil nitrate stock,denitrification rate,and ammonia volatilization rate.Finally,the shuffled complex evolution developed at the University of Arizona(SCE-UA)algorithm was used to optimize the selected sensitive parameters to improve prediction accuracy.The results showed that the sensitive parameters related to soil nitrate stock included the potential nitrification rate,Michaelis constant,microbial C/N ratio,and slow humus C/N ratio,the sensitive parameters related to denitrification rate were the potential denitrification rate,Michaelis constant,and N2 O production rate,and the sensitive parameters related to ammonia volatilization rate included the coefficient of ammonia volatilization exchange and potential nitrification rate.Based on the optimized parameters,prediction efficiency was notably increased with the highest coefficient of determination being approximately 0.8.Moreover,the average relative interval length at the 95% confidence level for soil nitrate stock,denitrification rate,and ammonia volatilization rate were 11.92,0.008,and 4.26,respectively,and the percentages of coverage of the measured values in the 95% confidence interval were 68%,86%,and 92%,respectively.By identifying sensitive parameters related to soil N,the expanded VIP model optimized by the SCE-UA algorithm can effectively simulate the dynamics of soil nitrate stock,denitrification rate,and ammonia volatilization rate in the NCP. 展开更多

Background:The simplest and most convenient food technology is the using of dry composite mixtures.They have a lot of advantages.Dry composite mixtures,which would completely be the basis for the production of personalized food concentrates,are not represented.The development of such dry composite mixtures is actual and of scientific and practical interest.The purpose of this research is the selection and justification of local import-substituting raw materials components for dry composite mixtures used as the basis for the production of food concentrates.As the objects of research,the raw materials components of the starch,fruit and vegetable,industry were selected.The work uses currently accepted standard research methods for organoleptic and physic-chemical parameters of raw materials components.The research was carried out within of the project“Theoretical Substantiation of Production Technology and the Development of Import-Substituting Food Products of Functional Purpose Based on Dry Composite Mixtures”,funded by the Belarusian Republican Foundation for Basic Research.Based on the researches,it was found out that in the composition of dry composite mixtures for the production of food concentrates it is expedient to use the following raw materials:potato starch,extruded corn starch,dried carrots,dried beets,dried topinambur and dried apples in chopped form. 展开更多

Multifunctional biodegradable films from fruit and vegetable by-products:Enhanced mechanical,antioxidant and antimicrobial properties

This study developed a multifunctional biodegradable lignin-removed loquat peel film(LPF)via sodium alginatebased chemical oxidation and casting.Delignification enhanced mechanical strength(TS increased by 3.6 times,EAB increased by 15.1 times),optical transparency(progressive 350-800 nm transmittance),and barrier prop-erties(WVP reduced by 70.3%).XRD,FT-IR and TGA analysis revealed cellulose formed strong hydrogen bonds with sodium alginate and glycerol,while delignification intensified these intermolecular interactions,accounting for the mechanical reinforcement.HPLC-TOF-MS2 identified 20 bioactive compounds(phenolics/terpenoids/fatty acids)enabling dual functionality:58.46%DPPH and 64.72%ABTS scavenging,plus 99%bacterial inhi-bition(Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus).Practical validation shows cantaloupe packaged with LPF could effectively extend the shelf life.The established protocol exhibits broad applicability for converting pectin/cellulose-rich biomass(e.g.,grape skins,pomegranate rinds)into mechanically robust,functionally graded packaging materials.This work presents a novel strategy for designing sustainable cling film that ingeniously turns agricultural waste into a treasure,which not only unlocks a novel route for waste valorization but also provides an effective source-level solution to substitute conventional plastics and address plastic pollution. 展开更多
