Optimizing Fine-Tuning in Quantized Language Models:An In-Depth Analysis of Key Variables

Large-scale Language Models(LLMs)have achieved significant breakthroughs in Natural Language Processing(NLP),driven by the pre-training and fine-tuning paradigm.While this approach allows models to specialize in specific tasks with reduced training costs,the substantial memory requirements during fine-tuning present a barrier to broader deployment.Parameter-Efficient Fine-Tuning(PEFT)techniques,such as Low-Rank Adaptation(LoRA),and parameter quantization methods have emerged as solutions to address these challenges by optimizing memory usage and computational efficiency.Among these,QLoRA,which combines PEFT and quantization,has demonstrated notable success in reducing memory footprints during fine-tuning,prompting the development of various QLoRA variants.Despite these advancements,the quantitative impact of key variables on the fine-tuning performance of quantized LLMs remains underexplored.This study presents a comprehensive analysis of these key variables,focusing on their influence across different layer types and depths within LLM architectures.Our investigation uncovers several critical findings:(1)Larger layers,such as MLP layers,can maintain performance despite reductions in adapter rank,while smaller layers,like self-attention layers,aremore sensitive to such changes;(2)The effectiveness of balancing factors depends more on specific values rather than layer type or depth;(3)In quantization-aware fine-tuning,larger layers can effectively utilize smaller adapters,whereas smaller layers struggle to do so.These insights suggest that layer type is a more significant determinant of fine-tuning success than layer depth when optimizing quantized LLMs.Moreover,for the same discount of trainable parameters,reducing the trainable parameters in a larger layer is more effective in preserving fine-tuning accuracy than in a smaller one.This study provides valuable guidance for more efficient fine-tuning strategies and opens avenues for further research into optimizing LLM fine-tuning in resource-constrained environments. 展开更多

This paper describes a flood routing method applied in an ungauged basin, utilizing the Muskingum model with variable parameters of wave travel time K and weight coefficient of discharge x based on the physical characteristics of the river reach and flood, including the reach slope, length, width, and flood discharge. Three formulas for estimating parameters of wide rectangular, triangular, and parabolic cross sections are proposed. The influence of the flood on channel flow routing parameters is taken into account. The HEC-HMS hydrological model and the geospatial hydrologic analysis module HEC-GeoHMS were used to extract channel or watershed characteristics and to divide sub-basins. In addition, the initial and constant-rate method, user synthetic unit hydrograph method, and exponential recession method were used to estimate runoff volumes, the direct runoff hydrograph, and the baseflow hydrograph, respectively. The Muskingum model with variable parameters was then applied in the Louzigou Basin in Henan Province of China, and of the results, the percentages of flood events with a relative error of peak discharge less than 20% and runoff volume less than 10% are both 100%. They also show that the percentages of flood events with coefficients of determination greater than 0.8 are 83.33%, 91.67%, and 87.5%, respectively, for rectangular, triangular, and parabolic cross sections in 24 flood events. Therefore, this method is applicable to ungauged basins. 展开更多

The variation characteristics of aquifer parameters,induced by groundwater source heat pump(GWSHP) operation under variable flow,were theoretically analyzed through a case study,in which the characteristics of building air conditioning load were considered.The results,compared with the constant flow operation,indicate that the influence on the variations of porosity,hydraulic conductivity and confined water head is decreased by 48%,51% and 71%,respectively,under variable flow operation.The security of variable flow operation is superior to that of constant flow.It is also concluded that the climate region and function of the buildings are primary factors which affect the suitability of variable flow operation in GWSHP. 展开更多

Accurate engine performance models are important for model-based performance evaluation of aero engine.The accuracy of the model often depends on engine component maps,so there is a need for a method that can accurately correct the component maps of the model over a wide range.In this paper,a new method for modifying component maps is proposed,this method combines the correction of the scaling factors with the solution process of the off-design working point,and uses the adjustment of the variable geometric parameters of the engine to change the position of the working line,in order to obtain more correction results and guarantee high accuracy in a wider range.The method is validated by taking the main fan of the Adaptive Cycle Engine(ACE),an ideal power unit for a new generation of multi-purpose and ultra-wide working range aircraft,as an example.The results show that the maximum error between the corrected component maps and the target maps is less than 1%.New possibility for more precise component maps can be realized in this paper. 展开更多

Change of parameters of BCC/RCG-WG for daily non-precipitation variables in China: 1951-1978 and 1979-2007

Parameters of weather generator BCC/RCG-WG for daily non-precipitation variables including maximum temperature, minimum temperature and sunshine hours at 669 stations in China are estimated using history daily records from 1951 to 1978 and from 1979 to 2007 respectively. The changes in the parameters for the two periods are revealed to explore the impact of climate change on these parameters. The results show that the parameters of the non-precipitation variables have experienced different changes. While the annual means and the amplitudes of the seasonal cycle show a clear change, the interannual variability, the timings of the seasonal cycles, and the temporal correlations for each variable remain practically unchanged. This indicates that climate changes in China over the last 57 years are mainly reflected in variations in the means and in the strength of the seasonal cycles. The changed parameters have implications for the stationary assumption implied in the parameter estimation and use of the weather generator for climate change studies. 展开更多

In order to solve the design problem of dynamic load of a carrier-based aircraft,according to the relevant criteria of national military standards,eight key flight parameters of the dynamic load conditions for the aircraft carrier were selected.Based on the multivariable distribution data of landing flight parameters obtained from flight test,the distribution form and range limitation of each flight parameter were determined by using the probability distribution of each flight parameter and the spatial relationship among variables.Furthermore,100000 sets of data were constructed to simulate the landing condition of aircraft in the form of random number.After the envelope is screened by multivariable joint probability distribution,the boundary conditions were compared and merged,and finally the dynamic load conditions were obtained.In this paper,a set of dynamic load condition design method based on the aircraft requirements is constructed,which systematically covers all kinds of situations that occur in the process of aircraft landing,and improves the conventional design process of aircraft dynamic load. 展开更多

Determination of uncertainties of geomechanical parameters of metamorphic rocks using petrographic analyses

Geomechanical parameters of intact metamorphic rocks determined from laboratory testing remain highly uncertain because of the great intrinsic variability associated with the degrees of metamorphism.The aim of this paper is to develop a proper methodology to analyze the uncertainties of geomechanical characteristics by focusing on three domains,i.e.data treatment process,schistosity angle,and mineralogy.First,the variabilities of the geomechanical laboratory data of Westwood Mine(Quebec,Canada)were examined statistically by applying different data treatment techniques,through which the most suitable outlier methods were selected for each parameter using multiple decision-making criteria and engineering judgment.Results indicated that some methods exhibited better performance in identifying the possible outliers,although several others were unsuccessful because of their limitation in large sample size.The well-known boxplot method might not be the best outlier method for most geomechanical parameters because its calculated confidence range was not acceptable according to engineering judgment.However,several approaches,including adjusted boxplot,2MADe,and 2SD,worked very well in the detection of true outliers.Also,the statistical tests indicate that the best-fitting probability distribution function for geomechanical intact parameters might not be the normal distribution,unlike what is assumed in most geomechanical studies.Moreover,the negative effects of schistosity angle on the uniaxial compressive strength(UCS)variabilities were reduced by excluding the samples within a specific angle range where the UCS data present the highest variation.Finally,a petrographic analysis was conducted to assess the associated uncertainties such that a logical link was found between the dispersion and the variabilities of hard and soft minerals. 展开更多

A variable parameter self-adaptive control strategy based on driving condition identification is proposed to take full advantage of the fuel saving potential of the plug-in hybrid electric bus(PHEB).Firstly,the principal component analysis(PCA)and the fuzzy c-means clustering(FCM)algorithm is used to construct the comprehensive driving cycle,congestion driving cycle,urban driving cycle and suburban driving cycle of Chinese urban buses.Secondly,an improved particle swarm optimization(IPSO)algorithm is proposed,and is used to optimize the control parameters of PHEB under different driving cycles,respectively.Then,the variable parameter self-adaptive control strategy based on driving condition identification is given.Finally,for an actual running vehicle,the driving condition is identified by relevance vector machine(RVM),and the corresponding control parameters are selected to control the vehicle.The simulation results show that the fuel consumption of using the variable parameter self-adaptive control strategy is reduced by 4.2% compared with that of the fixed parameter control strategy,and the feasibility of the variable parameter self-adaptive control strategy is verified. 展开更多

In the proposed algorithm, linear programming is employed to solve the optimization problem of classification to decrease the computation time and to reduce its complexity when compared with the original model. The adjusted punishment parameter greatly reduced the classification error resulting from asymmetric distributed samples and the detailed procedure of the proposed algorithm is given. The activation method is the improvement and enhancement of Liapunov-Schmidt method in elastic stability theory. It is more generalized and more normalized than conventional perturbation methods. The activated potential functions may be transformed into normalized catastrophe potential functions. The activated equilibrium equations may be treated as bifurcation equations. A modified polarization saturation model is proposed and addressed math- ematically using a complex variable approach in two-dimensional (2D) semipermeable piezoelectric media. In this model, an existing polarization saturation (PS) model in 2D piezoelectric media is modified by considering a linearly varying saturated normal electric displacement load in place of a constant normal electric displacement load, applied on a saturated electric zone. A centre cracked infinite 2D piezoelectric domain subject to an arbitrary poling direction and in-plane electromechanical loadings is considered for the analytical and numerical studies. Here, the problem is mathematically modeled as a non-homogeneous Riemann-Hilbert problem in terms of unknown complex potential functions representing electric displacement and stress components. Having solved the Hilbert problem, the solutions to the saturated zone length, the crack opening displace- ment (COD), the crack opening potential (COP), and the local stress intensity factors (SIFs) are obtained in explicit forms. A numerical study is also presented for the proposed modified model, showing the effects of the saturation condition on the applied electrical loading, the saturation zone length, and the COP. The results of fracture parameters obtained from the proposed model are compared with the existing PS model subject to electrical loading, crack face conditions, and polarization angles. 展开更多

We estimate that the total number of Mira variables in the Galaxy is from about 100 000 to 600 000 and their average lifetimes are between about 150 000 and 830 000 yr. The ratio of the number of O-Mira variables to that of C-Mira variables ranges from about 0.68 to 6.2. The effects of input physical parameters (mass loss rate, the minimum core mass for the third dredge-up, the third dredge-up efficiency and theoretical criterion for selecting Mira variables) on the Mira population are discussed. 展开更多

High-dimensional longitudinal data arise frequently in biomedical and genomic research. It is important to select relevant covariates when the dimension of the parameters diverges as the sample size increases. We consider the problem of variable selection in high-dimensional linear models with longitudinal data. A new variable selection procedure is proposed using the smooth-threshold generalized estimating equation and quadratic inference functions (SGEE-QIF) to incorporate correlation information. The proposed procedure automatically eliminates inactive predictors by setting the corresponding parameters to be zero, and simultaneously estimates the nonzero regression coefficients by solving the SGEE-QIF. The proposed procedure avoids the convex optimization problem and is flexible and easy to implement. We establish the asymptotic properties in a high-dimensional framework where the number of covariates increases as the number of cluster increases. Extensive Monte Carlo simulation studies are conducted to examine the finite sample performance of the proposed variable selection procedure. 展开更多

The present paper emphasizes the peristaltic mechanism of Rabinowitsch liquid in a complaint porous channel under the influence of variable liquid properties and convective heat transfer.The effect of inclination on the complaint channel walls has been taken into account.The viscosity of the liquid varies across the thickness of the complaint channel,whereas,thermal conductivity varies concerning temperature.The nonlinear governing equations are solved by using perturbation technique under the long wavelength and small Reynold’s number approximations.The expressions for axial velocity,temperature,the coefficient of heat transfer and streamlines are obtained and analyzed graphically.The above said physiological phenomena are investigated for a specific set of relevant parameters on dilatant,Newtonian and pseudoplastic fluid models.The results presented here shows that the presence of variable viscosity,porous parameter and slip parameter significantly affects the flow quantities of dilatant,Newtonian and pseudoplastic fluid models.The investigation further reveals that an increase in the value of variable viscosity and porous parameters enhances the occurrence of trapping phenomenon.Moreover,the size of trapped bolus can be eliminated with suitably adjusting the angle of inclination parameter. 展开更多

According to the 2008 international guidelines for management of severe sepsis and septic shock, resuscitation should achieve a central venous pressure (CVP) of 8-12 mmHg within the first 6 h. However, it is still uncertain about the sensitivity and specificity of CVP in reflecting the cardiac preload. Ultrasonography is a simple, rapid, non-invasive, and repeatable method for the measurement of sensitivity and specificity of CVP and has thus gradually attracted the increasing attention of physicians. It was reported that ultrasonography can show the inferior vena cava diameter, respiratory variability index, and blood volume in patients with sepsis or heart failure. 展开更多
