However, interest has been recently moving toward a more flexible concept in which the subject of the processing and encoding operations is a set of visual elements organized in both time and space in a flexible and arbitrarily complex way. The moving picture experts group (MPEG- 4) standard supports this concept and its verification model (VM) encoder has adopted scalable rate control (SRC) as the rate control scheme, which is based on the spatial domain and compatible with constant bit rate (CBR) and variable bit rate (VBR). In this paper,a new rate control algorithm based on the DCT domain instead of the pixel domain is presented. More-(over), macroblock level rate control scheme to compute the quantization step for each macroblock has been adopted. The experimental results show that the new algorithm can achieve a much better result than the original one in both peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and the coding bits, and that the new algorithm is more flexible than test model 5 (TM5) rate control algorithm.展开更多

Each input frame is classified into one of 4 phonetic classes. Non-speech frames are represented with Bark-band noise model. The extracted CWs become rapidly evolving waveforms (REWs) or slowly evolving waveforms (SEWs) in the cases of unvoiced or stationary voiced frames respectively, while mixed voiced frames use the same CW decomposition as that in the conventional CWI. Experimental results show that the proposed codec can eliminate most buzzy and noisy artifacts existing in the fixed-bit-rate characteristic waveform interpolation (FBR-CWI) speech codec, the average bit rate can be much lower, and its reconstructed speech quality is much better than FS 1 016 CELP at 4.8 kbit/s and similar to G. 723.1 ACELP at 5.3 kbit/s.展开更多

Traffic smoothing algorithm is very efficient in reducing burstiness of the VBR video stream by trans- mitting data in a series of fixed rates. We propose in this paper a novel segment-based bandwidth allocation algorithm which dynamically adjusts the segmentation boundary and changes the transmission rate at the latest possible point so that the video segment will be extended as long as possible and the number of rate changes can be as small as possible while keeping the peak rate low. Simulation results showed that our approach has small bandwidth requirement, high bandwidth utilization and low computation cost.展开更多

This paper discusses dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation(DWBA) algorithm in hybrid WDM/TDM EPONs.Based on the correlation structure of the variable bit rate(VBR) video traffic,we propose a quality-ofservice (QoS) supported DWBA using adaptive linear traffic prediction.Wavelength and timeslot are allocated dynamically by optical line terminal(OLT) to all optical network units(ONUs) based on the bandwidth requests and the guaranteed service level agreements(SLA) of all ONUs.Mean square error of the predicted average arriving rate of compound video traffic during waiting period is minimized through Wiener-Hopf equation.Simulation results show that the DWBA-adaptive-linear-prediction(DWBA-ALP) algorithm can significantly improve the QoS performances in terms of low delay and high bandwidth utilization.展开更多

Increasing needs for better video resolution and faster transmission bandwidths present challenges to the goal of achieving balance between video quality and coding cost. In this paper, we propose a Perceptive Variable Bit-Rate Control (PVBRC) framework for the state-of-the-art video coding standard High-Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC)/H.265. PVBRC allocates a bit-rate to a picture while taking a Comprehensive Picture Quality Assessment (CPQA) model and perceptive target bit-rate allocation into consideration. The CPQA model calculates the objective and perceptive quality of both source and reconstructed pictures by referring to the human vision system. The coding bit-rate is then dynamically allocated by the result of the CPQA model according to differences in picture content. In PVBRC, the quantization parameter for current picture encoding is updated by an effective fuzzy logical controller to satisfy the transmission requirements of the Internet of Things. Experimental results show that the proposed PVBRC can achieve average bit savings by 11.49% when compared with constant bit-rate control under the same objective and subjective video quality.展开更多

Several problems in the designing of large-scale multimedia servers are addressed, with the following contributions: (1) a striping scheme is proposed that minimizes the number of seeks and hence maximizes the performance; (2) a simple and efficient mechanism is presented to find the optimal striping unit size as well as the optimal round length, which exploits both the characteristics of VBR streams and the situation of resources in the system; and (3) the characteristics and resource requirements of several scheduling schemes are investigated in order to obtain a clear indication as to which scheme shows the best performance in realtime multimedia servicing. Based on our analysis and experimental results, the CSCAN scheme outperforms the other schemes. It is believed that the results are of value in the design of effective large-scale multimedia servers.
