Development of a Shoelace Tensile Testing System and Investigation into the Effects of Different Running Speeds on Shoelace Tensile Variation

This study investigated the validity and sensitivity of a custom-made shoelace tensile testing system.The aim was to analyze the distribution pattern of shoelace tension in different positions and under different tightness levels during running.Mechanical tests were conducted using 16 weights,and various statistical analyses,including linear regression,Bland-Altman plots,coefficient of variation,and intraclass correlation coefficient,were performed to assess the system’s validity.Fifteen male amateur runners participated in the study,and three conditions(loose,comfortable,and tight)were measured during an upright stance.The system utilized VICON motion systems,a Kistler force plate,and a Photoelectric gate speed measurement system.Results showed a linear relationship between voltage and load at the three sensors(R2≥0.9997).Bland-Altman plots demonstrated 95%prediction intervals within±1.96SD from zero for all sensors.The average coefficient of variation for each sensor was less than 0.38%.Intraclass correlation coefficient values were larger than 0.999(p<0.0001)for each sensor.The peak tension of the front shoelace was greater than that of the front and middle when the shoelace was loose and tight.The rear shoelace had the highest tension force.The study also found that shoelace tension varied throughout the gait cycle during running.Overall,this research provides a novel and validated method for measuring shoelace tensile stress,which has implications for developing automatic shoelace fastening systems. 展开更多

Tapered Suction Caissons:A Numerical Investigation into Their Pull-out Performance 被引量:5

Suction caissons have been widely used as anchors and foundations for floating and fixed offshore platforms. The pull-out performance of conventional suction caissons (with upright walls) has been investigated by a number of researchers. However, no attention has been paid to tapered suction caissons. This paper deals with the performance of tapered suction caissons under vertical pull-out loads. A numerical approach is used for this purpose. The numerical model is first verified against test data available for common upright caissons. The verified model is then used to study the pullout performance of tapered suction caissons. It is noticed that the pull-out capacities exhibited by tapered suction caissons are in general considerably higher than those from their corresponding traditional upright caissons. To obtain an insight into this superior behaviour, effects from certain soil/caisson/drainage parameters on the pull-out capacity of tapered suction caissons are studied. Soil cohesion is noticed to have a linear improving effect on the capacity of both upright and ta- pered suction caissons. The soil internal friction angle is noticed to have an exponential increasing effect on the pull-out capacity. With a constant caisson diameter, an increase in the aspect ratio is seen to particularly influence the pull-out capacity. With a constant caisson length, an increase in the aspect ratio is discovered to result in non-linear decrease in the pull-out capacity. Under undrained conditions, tapered models generally show less sensitivity to above mentioned soil/caisson parameters as compared with those under drained conditions. 展开更多

Straw checkerboard sand barriers with a porous structure that consists of a pervious upper portion and a dense lower portion are widely used to achieve great sand control effect.Considering this,and resolving the serious earth surface undercutting problem after HDPE sandbreak net checkboard barriers setting,the authors used HDPE(high-density polyethylene)materials to prepare new sandbreak materials with a similar porous structure.Through wind tunnel simulations and field sand control monitoring,we compared the sand control effect of three HDPE sandbreak nets with different porosity structure.Compared to the sandbreak net with uniform porosity structure,the three types of HDPE sandbreak nets with different porosity structure had poorer effect on reducing sand transport rates,but had longer effective protection distance before sandbreak nets at low wind velocity conditions(<12 m/s),longer effective protection distance at high wind velocity(>14 m/s)and longer effective protection distance between sandbreak nets at all experimental wind velocity conditions.Wind and sand control effect characteristics of HDPE sandbreak nets with different porosity structure provide an ideal material on semiburied checkerboard sand barriers for sand stabilization.By contrast,uniform-type sandbreak nets are used as materials on high upright sand fences for sand blocking.These HDPE sandbreak nets can be used to replace traditional sandbreak materials and have a very high potential for widespread and popular application in aeolian sand disaster control. 展开更多

Until now, most researches into the rogue-wave-structure interaction have relied on experimental measurement and numerical simulation. Owing to the complexity of the physical mechanism of rogue waves, theoretical study on the wave-structure issue still makes little progress. In this paper, the rogue wave flow around a vertical cylinder is analytically studied within the scope of the potential theory. The rogue wave is modeled by the Gauss envelope, which is one particular case of the well-known focusing theory. The formulae of the wave-induced horizontal force and bending moment are proposed. For the convenience of engineering application, the derived formulae are simplified appropriately, and verified against numerical results. In addition, the influence of wave parameters, such as the energy focusing degree and the wave focusing position, is thoroughly investigated. 展开更多

Nowadays some new ideas of fractional derivatives have been used successfully in the present research community to study different types of mathematical models.Amongst them,the significant models of fluids and heat or mass transfer are on priority.Most recently a new idea of fractal-fractional derivative is introduced;however,it is not used for heat transfer in channel flow.In this article,we have studied this new idea of fractal fractional operators with power-law kernel for heat transfer in a fluid flow problem.More exactly,we have considered the free convection heat transfer for a Newtonian fluid.The flow is bounded between two parallel static plates.One of the plates is heated constantly.The proposed problem is modeled with a fractal fractional derivative operator with a power-law kernel and solved via the Laplace transform method to find out the exact solution.The results are graphically analyzed via MathCad-15 software to study the behavior of fractal parameters and fractional parameter.For the influence of temperature and velocity profile,it is observed that the fractional parameter raised the velocity and temperature as compared to the fractal operator.Therefore,a combined approach of fractal fractional explains the memory of the function better than fractional only. 展开更多

The difficulties in the reconstruction of Zhang Heng’s Seismoscope come mainly from the lack of understanding of its mechanical principles. Such a discrepancy affects the rational reconstruction of the external form of the seismoscope and the fair assessment of its position in science. In connection with the two basic conjectures on its basic principles over the past hundred years: namely, the suspended pendulum and the upright rod, the authors have conducted a comprehensive study from the viewpoint of modern seismology. In this study, various aspects are involved, such as the properties of the seismoscope, its description in the “History of the Latter Han Dynasty", the structure and movement of the central pillar, historical earthquakes in the Longxi region, earthquake intensity in Luoyang, and modern seismograms from the Luoyang seismic station. The result shows that Zhang Heng’s seismoscope works following a suspended pendulum principle; it is triggered to move by seismic Rayleigh waves; and resonance plays the role of amplification. The long-prevailing conjecture of the upright rod, which was mistakenly called the “inverted pendulum" for a time, is believed to be improper. Both theory and practice show that it cannot be used in a seismoscope and will lead to an irrational reconstruction of the external form. 展开更多

Objective:To examine the effect of upright and ambulant positions versus lying down during the active first stage of labor on birth outcomes for nulliparous women.Methods:This is a randomized controlled clinical trial conducted at the delivery department of Damanhour Educational Institute,El Behira Governorate,Egypt.The study sample involved 150 parturient women equally divided into intervention and control groups using randomization block technique.The researchers used four tools for data collection:Demographic data interview schedule,World Health Organization Partograph,Apgar’s score,to evaluate neonatal outcomes,and visual analogue pain intensity scale.For the study group,the parturient women were encouraged to assume one of the upright positions or ambulating around the bed so as to maintain the pelvis in vertical plane as far as possible for 20-25 min for every 1 h.The control group received routine hospital care,which includes lying down in bed.IBM SPSS 23.0 was used to analyze the data.Results:Significant differences(P<0.05)were observed between the study and control groups in relation to cervical dilation,fetal head descent,uterine contractions interval,and frequency.The duration of the first stage of labor significantly reduced(P=0.018)in the intervention group compared with control group.No significant differences(P>0.05)were observed between both groups in term of emergency cesarean birth rates,oxytocin use,and neonatal outcomes.Conclusions:This study proves that upright and ambulant positions significantly enhance uterine contractility,cervical dilatation,and fetal head descent and reduce the first stage duration. 展开更多

The Arabidopsis gene UPRIGHT ROSETTE(URO)was previously identified as a leaf develop-mental regulator,as all rosette leaves of the semi-dominant upright rosette(uro)mutant grow uprightly at seedling stages.Here,we report more detailed phenotypic characterizations of the uro mutant and show that the URO gene has multiple functions in plant development.In addition to its aberrant leaf-growingpattern,the uro mutant displayed pleiotropic phenotypes.Both uro/+and uro/uro plants showed a loss of apical dominance,while such a phenotype in the uro uro plants appeared more severe.Some secondary branches of the uro/uro plants were replaced by leaves,for which petioles were attached to the abaxial side of leaves.Flowers often exhibited varying abnormalities,with altered numbers of petals and stamensand abnormally fused organs.Stems of the uro mutant were soft,which was caused by lacking interfas-cicular fiber.In addition,vascular differentiation in mutant stem was delayed.The loss of apical dominance and the defects in vascular development and interfascicular fiber formation suggest that the URO function might be associated with auxin-mediated plant development.To provide more direct evidence whether the URO is involved in auxin action,we examined the URO function in auxin polar transportation pathway by analyzing pinformed/(pinf)uro double mutant.Phenotypes of the double mutant suggest that URO and PINFORMED1(PIN/)have partial genetic interactions in plant development,which further supports the hypothesis that the URO gene may play an important role in the auxin regulatory pathway. 展开更多

The effect of three different N-fertilization levels (NI: 625, N2:385 and N3:770 kg hal; where in case of N1 was used the 3-6-10+3MGO+30% OM and in cases of N2-N3 the 26-0-0 fertilizers) on fresh and dry weight of the perennial Rosmarinus officinalis (upright cultivar) was investigated during the 2nd year after establishment at the Experimental Farm of the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaly in Greece (TEI; Larissa plain) in 2015. It is well documented that the crop reaches its potential yield on the third year of cultivation and continues producing biomass for as long as eight years. Complete weather data (air temperature, radiation, air humidity, precipitation) were recorded hourly in an automatic meteorological station, which was installed to the experimental farm of TEI. Upon harvest (November 3rd 2015), the crop reached a maximum fresh yield of 11.67 tons per hectare and dry yield of 4.3, respectively. The average fresh weight was 8.2, 8.4 and 8.9 t hal and the dry weight were 2.6, 3.1 and 3.2 t ha-1 for the N1, N2 and N3 levels, respectively. Furthermore the higher moisture content was observed in the case of N1 level (68%). Therefore, the above data show that rosemary cultivation could be a promising alternative crop, especially in case of the consideration that average selling price of dry rosemary in Greece is 3.5 ∈ kg^-1 and the average gross income exceeds the amount of 10,000 ∈ ha^-1. 展开更多

To investigate the operational mechanism and quality improvement strategies of a reed upright conveying device,first,the structural design was completed,and a force analysis of the conveying process was conducted.A rigid-flexible coupling simulation model of reed stalks and the conveying mechanism was then employed to examine the effects of the structural parameters of the conveying chain links on the maximum contact force exerted on the reed stalks and to identify the optimal parameter combination.High-speed photography experiments were carried out during the conveying process to capture the motion states and trajectories of the reed stalks,elucidating the causes of stalk breakage and blockages.Subsequently,response surface experiments were conducted to investigate the primary factors influencing upright conveying quality.Mathematical models for predicting damage rate and conveying rate were established,and the effects of various factors on these indicators were analyzed.Multi-objective optimization of the regression models was performed based on practical production requirements,yielding an optimal parameter combination:transverse conveying speed of the chain at 1.1 m/s,speed ratio of 1.2,and upper conveying chain position at 1.37 m.Experimental results indicated a damage rate of 11.90%and a conveying rate of 95.11%,meeting the operational requirements for mechanized reed harvesting and conveying.These findings provide fundamental theoretical data for the development of reed harvester conveying components and the selection of operational parameters. 展开更多

Plant secondary growth is of tremendous importance, not only for plant growth and development but also for economic usefulness. Secondary tissues such as xylem and phloem are the conducting tissues in plant vascular systems, essentially for water and nutrient transport, respectively. On the other hand, products of plant secondary growth are important raw materials and renewable sources of energy. Although advances have been recently made towards describing molecular mechanisms that regulate secondary growth, the genetic control for this process is not yet fully understood. Secondary cell wall formation in plants shares some common mechanisms with other plant secondary growth processes. Thus, studies on the secondary cell wall formation using Arabidopsis may help to understand the regulatory mechanisms for plant secondary growth. We previously reported phenotypic characterizations of an Arabidopsis semi-dominant mutant, upright rosette (uro), which is defective in secondary cell wall growth and has an unusually soft stem. Here, we show that lignification in the secondary cell wall in uro is aberrant by analyzing hypocotyl and stem. We also show genome-wide expression profiles of uro seedlings, using the Affymetrix GeneChip that contains approximately 24 000 Arabidopsis genes. Genes identified with altered expression levels include those that function in plant hormone biosynthesis and signaling, cell division and plant secondary tissue growth. These results provide useful information for further characterizations of the regulatory network in plant secondary cell wall formation. 展开更多
