Since the foundation of the Western modern university in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries,there has always been debate on the purpose and social or political utility of scientific knowledge.The question remains...Since the foundation of the Western modern university in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries,there has always been debate on the purpose and social or political utility of scientific knowledge.The question remains as to what we consider as‘useful knowledge’to be(Flexner,1939;Gibbons et al.,1994).The purpose of this paper is to explore and propose an alternative conception of scientific knowledge usefulness,advocating for a balanced approach between direct and indirect utility of knowledge in higher education.To this end,the paper revisits Mill’s(1859)conception of epistemic utility as explained in his work On Liberty to present an idea of scientific knowledge usefulness which is utilitarian in a broader sense.Building on this foundation,the paper promotes a pluralistic conception of epistemic utility and suggests a typology by discerning between direct and indirect utility of knowledge.Overall,by revisiting Mill’s(1859)notion of utility,this paper aims to demonstrate that the notion of‘utility’is not only a function that serves the Idea of the University,but it is also linked to the notion of‘self-development’-Bildung.In that sense,one can make the case for a broader and more complex scientific utilitarianism.展开更多

A"Hexathron Principle"pertaining to song translation is formulated on the basis of Peter Low's"Pentathlon Principle"and Xue Fan's objection to"displaced diction"phenomenon. The"Hexathron Principle"refers to six requirements a translated song-text should meet, i.e."Singability, Sense, Unity, Naturalness, Rhythm, and Rhyme", among which, the singability principle is paramount. As for the song translator, how to retain the singability in a translated song-text is of the most significance. To sum up, strategies for devising singable songs are to ensure singability of the translated lyrics, match rhythm and sustain rhyme of the original, properly manipulate sense, maintain the unity between linguistic and musical directions as well as pay special heed to seek naturalness of the TT. The harmful effects of technological devices, including smart phones have been increasingly suspected among university students;bedtimes have become increasingly later at night, and leisure activities often extend thr...The harmful effects of technological devices, including smart phones have been increasingly suspected among university students;bedtimes have become increasingly later at night, and leisure activities often extend through the night. Likewise, availability and need of increasing part-time job hours have been considered. The purpose of this research was to determine the relationship among lifestyles, quality of sleep, and daytime drowsiness of nursing students of University A. The research was conducted in June 2015, when student life rhythms were considered stable after two months of lectures. Responses with missing values or with inappropriate answers were excluded. Of the data collected from 96 respondents, only 71 were acceptable. The survey focused on lifestyle, daytime sleepiness (using ESS: Epworth Sleepiness Scale) and quality of subjective sleep (using the PSQI: Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index). Approval was obtained from the Research Ethics Committee of Shikoku University. While in this study, more than half (63.4%) of the students had poor quality of sleep, however, there was no relationship between their quality of sleep and daytime drowsiness, or between their lifestyles and the quality of sleep. These findings suggest that while university students’ use of technological devices is suspected to influence on sleep deprivation and consequent daytime drowsiness, the findings did not provide the evidence.展开更多

As a special group,...In recent years,with the sustained and healthy economic development in China,the focus of people's attention has gradually been shifted to spiritual pursuit after their material pursuit is met. As a special group,college students get more social attention,and the study of college students' well-being is gradually carried out and furthered. In institutions of higher learning,the degree of college students' well-being exerts direct influence on the degree of college students' psychological health and college students' recognition of higher education. Taking 205 students from Huazhong Agricultural University as an example,drawing on the subjective well-being scale compiled by Diener et al.,and through discussions,interviews and questionnaires,this paper carries out a study from such aspects as gender,specialty,grade,region,family economic status and love situation,and uses SPSS20. 0 software to implement such statistical analyses as factor analysis,partial correlation analysis,descriptive analysis and cluster analysis,thus researching the factors influencing college students' well-being. The results show that the overall perception of well-being the students is relatively high,and very few students feel unhappy,indicating that the overall psychological situation of students in Huazhong Agricultural University is optimistic,but the psychological situation of individual students still needs our attention. The analysis shows that the well-being of college students is influenced by the factors such as grade,degree of love for their specialties,region and family economic status,and is not influenced by whether to be the only child in the family and gender. This paper suggests that we should strengthen ideal and belief education,in order to improve college students' ability to endure setbacks; we should strengthen college student's association education,in order to enrich college life; we should strengthen practice teaching,in order to enhance college students' acceptance of the specialty they selected; we should strengthen the training of students' employment ability,so that they will be able to adapt to the social environment of great employment pressure.展开更多

文摘The influence of the network environment on the education of political beliefs of college students in China cannot be ignored.Taking Northwest A&F University as an example,starting from the current situation of students'political belief education in agricultural and forestry colleges and universities,the impact of network environment on the education of political beliefs of students in agricultural and forestry colleges and universities was analyzed,and the implementation path of improving political belief education in the network environment was explored,in order to provide a reference for improving the effectiveness of ideological and political education of students in agricultural and forestry colleges and universities.
文摘English is one of the most common languages in the world,and it has become one of the most important subjects in various countries.The native languages of China and Thailand are not English,and both countries are located in Asia and have many similarities in geographical location and cultural background.The Ministries of Education of the two countries have successively put forward relevant policies to promote the development of English education in the country.The implementation of these policies has promoted the development of college English course teaching in the country.These factors determine that the two countries have similarities in college English course teaching for Non-English majors.However,there are differences in teaching mode and teaching staff in the two countries because of their different national conditions,which make many differences,exist in college English course teaching for non-English majors in the two countries.During the author’s career as an exchange student in Chiang Mai University,she experienced the difference of college English course teaching for non-English majors in Thai universities,so the author did some researches on the basis of the understanding of English course teaching in Thai universities.Therefore,this thesis takes Sino-Thai college English course teaching for non-English majors as the research object—takes Jiujiang University and Chiang Mai University as example,and analyses their present situation from the aspects of the development and evolution,the teaching mode,and teaching staff of college English course teaching for non-English majors.On this basis,the author makes a comparative analysis of the English course teaching for non-English majors in two selected universities,then find their respective advantages and disadvantages,and put forward some suggestions on the development of Sino-Thai college English course teaching.
文摘With the rapid development of science and technology and the continuous advancement of society, computers have also entered thousands of households, playing an increasingly important role in people's production and life, and college students have become one of the most active groups of computer enthusiasts. While computers are gradually becoming popular in college campuses, the consumption and use of computers has had a tremendous impact on the life and learning of college students, which has also aroused widespread concern of the society and relevant scholars. This paper takes the 2016 freshmen of School of Public Administration of Hebei University of Economics and Business as the research objects, conducting research on the usage of computer and network of university and college students, and analyzes the survey results, providing some suggestions for university and college students and schools.

文摘Based on the analysis of the importance of professional cluster construction by ecological theory,with the change of social demand for talents,this paper explores the practice of environmental chemical professional cluster construction in Pingdingshan University,including gradually perfecting teaching conditions and reforming teaching mode,breaking through the limitations of resources,integrating the boundaries of colleges and departments,integrating multiple resources,innovating systems and mechanisms,reconstructing professional clusters,decon-structing professional connotations,reorganizing curriculum systems,etc.,in order to better build the ecological chain network of education in application-oriented colleges and universities,realize the deep integration of industry and education,train future-oriented interdisciplinary applied talents of new engineering,and realize the construction of characteristic professional cluster in application-oriented colleges.
文摘With the reform of China’s educational undertakings,in the daily teaching activities,various universities and colleges in China have gradually begun to attach importance to the cultivation of literature education and the cultivation of university and college students’Humanities quality.As a kind of discipline integrating art and humanity,literature education plays an important role in the cultivation of university and college students’humanities quality.Based on this,this paper conducts a simple analysis of the role of literature education in the quality cultivation and university college students,the current situation of China’s literature education in universities and colleges and the cultivation of university and college students’humanities quality and related optimization measures.It is hoped that there will be inspiration and help for improving the humanities quality of university and college students in China and giving play to the role of literature education.
文摘Since the reform and opening up, the Chinese government has attached growing importance to education, and has invested more resources and funds into higher education. In addition, the government has also invested large amounts of funds and technologies in the infrastructure construction of universities and colleges. The undertakings related to the infrastructure construction of universities and colleges in China are complicated in essence. Therefore, funds and technologies of the highest standards should be introduced. At the same time, external tendering is necessary for some undertakings. Currently, the tendering model adopted by universities and colleges in China is the traditional, which is ridden with some problems to be resolved in the shortest possible period. This paper focuses on the current problems of the tendering model adopted by universities and colleges and their solutions. Taking the tendering model in the undertakings of North China Electric Power University as an example, it notes setbacks of the traditional tendering model, and provides kind of theoretical support for establishing a new tendering model for universities and colleges and the related enterprises in China.

The professional talent training is a systems engineering, to cultivate excellent talents with international communication and competition ability can＇ t just rely on their own teaching quality improvement of the academic disciplines, such as no college English in helping to train the students in English tbr the professional study and research of academic ability, students can＇ t understand the foreign teachers＇ English teaching or lecture, can＇ t direct reading professional literature in English, it is hard to reach this goal. Under this condition, we enhance the teaching approaches with integration of information technology and conduct empirical analysis on Xi＇ an university.
文摘The curriculum setting is the core for higher tourism education. In this field, American has instructive experiences that are worthy of learning. In this paper, the researcher carries out an investigation to, on the one hand, analyze the university＇ s advanced achievements in majors settings, course structure, and mode of instruction from the aspects of bachelor, master, doctor, and on the other hand to make a prospect of the future development of the curriculum for higher tourism education in China, by using the method of the literature analysis and interview with the College of Hotel Administration at Cornell University as an example case.
