The dynamics of the system are discussed, and the effect of the capacity for treatment and the recruitment of the population are also studied. We find that the effect of the maximum recovery per unit of time and the recruitment rate of the popula- tion over some level are two factors which lead to the backward bifurcation, and in some cases, the model may undergo the saddle-node bifurcation or Bogdanov-Takens bifurca- tion. It is shown that the disease-free equilibrium is globally asymptotically stable under some conditions, Numerical simulations are consistent with our obtained results in the- orems, which show that improving the efficiency and capacity of treatment is important for control of disease.展开更多

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of LLLT on pain and somatosensory sensitization induced by orthodontic treatment. Forty individuals(12–33 years old; mean ± standard deviations: 20.8 ± 5.9 years) scheduled to receive orthodontic treatment were randomly divided into a laser group(LG) or a placebo group(PG)(1:1). The LG received LLLT(810-nm gallium-aluminium-arsenic diode laser in continuous mode with the power set at 400 mW, 2 J·cm–2) at 0 h, 2 h, 24 h, 4 d, and 7 d after treatment, and the PG received inactive treatment at the same time points. In both groups, the non-treated side served as a control. A numerical rating scale(NRS) of pain, pressure pain thresholds(PPTs), cold detection thresholds(CDTs), warmth detection thresholds(WDTs), cold pain thresholds(CPTs), and heat pain thresholds(HPTs) were tested on both sides at the gingiva and canine tooth and on the hand. The data were analysed by a repeated measures analysis of variance(ANOVA). The NRS pain scores were significantly lower in the LG group(P = 0.01). The CDTs,CPTs, WDTs, HPTs, and PPTs at the gingiva and the PPTs at the canine tooth were significantly less sensitive on the treatment side of the LG compared with that of the PG(P < 0.033). The parameters tested also showed significantly less sensitivity on the nontreatment side of the LG compared to that of the PG(P < 0.043). There were no differences between the groups for any quantitative sensory testing(QST) measures of the hand. The application of LLLT appears to reduce the pain and sensitivity of the tooth and gingiva associated with orthodontic treatment and may have contralateral effects within the trigeminal system but no generalized QST effects. Thus, the present study indicated a significant analgesia effect of LLLT application during orthodontic treatment.Further clinical applications are suggested.展开更多

Methods: Nine healthy volunteers were examined using gradient-recalled echo and echo-planar imaging (GRE-EPI) pulse sequence performed at the 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner. In the block designing, rotating grating, stationary grating and luminance were plotted as task states, stationary grating, luminance and darkness as control states, respectively. The tasks of stimuli included 6 steps. Imaging processing and statistical analysis were carried out off-line using statistical parametric mapping (SPM99) software in single-subject. Results: Some individual areas of visual cortex were activated by various stimuli information supplied by rotating grating. The strong activation in the middle of occipital lobe related to the stimuli of luminance, bilateral activation of Brodmann’s 19th area related to visual motion perception, and the mild activation in the middle of occipital lobe related to form perception. With its abilities to capture functional information on underlying tissue characteristics, MR functional quantitative imaging can be valuable in assessing treatment response and as such to optimize therapeutic outcome. Various MR quantitative imaging techniques, including diffusion weighted imaging, diffusion tensor imaging, MR spectroscopy and dynamic contrastenhanced imaging, have been investigated and found useful for assessment of radiotherapy. However, various aspects including data reproducibility, interpretation of biomarkers, image quality and data analysis impose challenges on applications of MR functional quantitative imaging in radiotherapy assessment. All of these challenging issues shall be addressed to help us understand whether MR functional quantitative imaging is truly beneficial and contributes to future development of radiotherapy. It is evident that individualized therapy is the future direction of patient care. MR functional quantitative imaging might serves as an indispensable tool towards this promising direction.展开更多

Materials subjected to surface metallization are commercial Teflon() FEP, Nafion(), ACLAR() and LaRCTM-CP1 thin films which have recently gained a large scientific and technological interest due to their excellent thermal, chemical, mechanical and dielectric properties. The original approach implemented in the present work involves: (i)the grafting of nitrogen-containing functionalities on the polymer surfaces through plasma treatments in ammonia, (ii) the direct catalysis of the so-modified surfaces via their immersion in a simple acidic PdCl2 solution (i.e. without using a prior surface sensitization in an acidic SnCl2 solution), and finally (iii) the electroless metallization itself. However, prior to the immersion in the industrial plating baths, the chemical reduction of the Pd+2 species (species covalently tethered on the nitrogen-containing groups) to metallic palladium (PdO) is shown to be a key factor in catalyzing the electroless deposition initiation. This is made by immersion in an hypophosphite (H2PO2-) solution. Wettability measurements and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) experiments are used to characterize every surface modification step of the developed process. A cross-hatch tape test was used to asses the adhesion strength of the electroless films that is shown qualitatively good. In addition, a fragmentation test was developed in combination with electrical measurements. Its use allows to distinguish different adhesion levels at the metal/polymer interface and to evidence the influence of some processing parameters.展开更多

Experiments and analysis of the absorption characteristics of three different geometrical forms of functional absorbers, i.e., panels, cubes and tubes, were conducted with different arrangements. The resulting esthetical effects are illustrated with pictures. Several non-fiber materials are used to compose functional absorbers with advantages both in acoustic properties and in architectural features. Cost effectiveness analysis is also given in order to provide design guidelines.展开更多

Suspicion of constipation in a child over 6 mo of age arises when the child presents with a decreased frequency of bowel movements(according to 87% of participants) with a mean of one bowel movement per 3.59 ± 1.0 d, hard stools(83%), blood in the stools(36%), fecal incontinence(33%), and/or difficulty in defecating(47%). Only 26 pediatricians prescribe pharmacologic treatment as first therapeutic approach, while the vast majority prefers nonpharmacologic treatment, mostly(according to 68%) The preferred nonpharmacologic treatment are high-fiber diet(96%), increased fluid intake(90%), toilet training(74%), and abdominal massage(49%). Duration of non-pharmacological treatment was limited to 1 to 2 wk. Seventy percent of the pediatricians recommending toilet training could only mention some elements of the technique, and only 15% was able to explain it fully and correctly. Lactulose is the most frequent pharmacologic intervention used(87% of the participants), and rectal treatment with sodium citrate, sodium lauryl sulfo acetate, and sorbitol is the most frequent rectal treatment(85%). Only 51% will prescribe rectal treatment for fecal impaction. The majority of the pediatricians(69%) expect a positive response during the first week with a mean(± SD) of 4.1(± 2.56) d. Most participants(86%) treat during one month or even less. And the majority(67%) stops treatment when the frequency and/or consistency of the stools have become normal, or if the patient had no longer complaints.CONCLUSION These data provide an insight on the diagnosis and management of constipation in childhood in Indonesia. Although general pediatricians are aware of some important aspects of the diagnosis and mangement of constipation, overall knowledge is limited. Efforts should be made to improve the distribution of existing guidelines. These findings highlight and confirm the difficulties in spreading existing information from guidelines to general pediatricians.展开更多

They may develop and be maintained as a result of structural and functional brain abnormalities, particularly associated with dopamine reward pathways and by environmental and psychosocial factors such as self-defeating cognitions and the relief from overstimulation that accompanies withdrawal from social and role functioning. Negative symptoms are more difficult to treat than the positive symptoms of schizophrenia and represent an unmet therapeutic need for large numbers of patients with schizophrenia. While antipsychotic medications to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia have been around for decades, they have done little to address the significant functional impairments in the disorder that are associated with negative symptoms. Negative symptoms and the resulting loss in productivity are responsible for much of the world-wide personal and economic burden of schizophrenia. Pharmacologic treatments may be somewhat successful in treating secondary causes of negative symptoms, such as antipsychotic side effects and depression. However, in the United States there are no currently approved treatments for severe and persistent negative symptoms(PNS) that are not responsive to treatments for secondary causes. Pharmacotherapy and psychosocial treatments are currently being developed and tested with severe and PNS as their primary targets. Academia, clinicians, the pharmaceutical industry, research funders, payers and regulators will need to work together to pursue novel treatments to address this major public health issue.展开更多

We investigated the FGN adsorption capacity for Pb2+at different initial concentrations, varying pH, contact time and temperature. The characterization results of scanning electron microscopy(SEM), thermal analysis(TG/DTG), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller(BET) method indicated that FGN layers were thin and possess large specific area with oxygen-containing functional groups grafted onto their surface. Meanwhile, the determined equilibrium adsorption capacity of FGN for Pb2+was 57.765 mg/g and adsorption isotherms well confirmed to Langmuir isotherms models. The results reveals that the FGN has better effect of water treatment.展开更多

The prevalence of infection with Helicobacter pylori (HP) in patients with functional dyspepsia is about 30% - 70%. The aim of our study is to observe the improvement of functional dyspepsia (FD) after Helicobacter pylori (HP) eradication. Methods: This is a prospective study over a period of 68 months (May 2009 - January 2015). We included all patients aged over 15 years, with functional dyspepsia defined by the Rome III criteria. The diagnosis of HP was made by histology and/or PCR. Patients infected with HP were treated in single-blind: standard triple therapy for 7 days or sequential treatment for 10 days. HP eradication control was made after: 3 months, 6 months and one year of treatment. Results: During the study period, 1190 patients were included of which 250 patients (21%) were in functional dyspepsia according to the Rome III criteria. The average age in patients with functional dyspepsia was 49 years [16 - 80], sex ratio M/F was 0.58 (N = 92/158). 60% of patients were older than 45 years (N = 150). Chronic smoking was found in 20% of patients (N = 50). One hundred and seventy five patients (70%) had HP infection (N = 175). One hundred and sixty five patients received the treatment of Helicobacter pylori (94.28%), 10 patients were lost to follow (5.71%). The eradication of HP was obtained in 98.41% with sequential treatment versus 88.73% with standard triple therapy (p = 0.026). All patients were reviewed at 3 months and 6 months after treatment, 86% were reviewed at 12 months (N = 143). Dyspeptic symptoms was disappeared in 43% of our patients (N = 71) partial disappearance of symptoms in 34.5% of cases (N = 57) persistence of symptoms in 22.42% of cases (N = 37). Conclusion: In our study the prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection in patients with functional dyspepsia is high: 70%. Sequential therapy is better than the standard triple therapy in the eradication of HP in patients with nonulcer dyspepsia, which improves their symptoms in more than 50% of cases.展开更多

MR functional quantitative imaging might serves as an indispensable tool towards this promising direction.
文摘This paper describes the electroless Ni or Cu plating of some fiuoropolymer substrates through a tin-free activation process. Its use allows to distinguish different adhesion levels at the metal/polymer interface and to evidence the influence of some processing parameters.
文摘Traumatic brain injury is an important global public health problem.Traumatic brain injury not only causes neural cell death, but also induces dendritic spine degeneration.Spared neurons from cell death in the injured brain may exhibit dendrite damage, dendritic spine degeneration, mature spine loss, synapse loss, and impairment of activity.Dendritic degeneration and synapse loss may significantly contribute to functional impairments and neurological disorders following traumatic brain injury.Normal function of the nervous system depends on maintenance of the functionally intact synaptic connections between the presynaptic and postsynaptic spines from neurons and their target cells.During synaptic plasticity, the numbers and shapes of dendritic spines undergo dynamic reorganization.Enlargement of spine heads and the formation and stabilization of new spines are associated with long-term potentiation, while spine shrinkage and retraction are associated with long-term depression.Consolidation of memory is associated with remodeling and growth of preexisting synapses and the formation of new synapses. To date, there is no effective treatment to prevent dendritic degeneration and synapse loss. This review outlines the current data related to treatments targeting dendritic spines that propose to enhance spine remodeling and improve functional recovery after traumatic brain injury. The mechanisms underlying proposed beneficial effects of therapy targeting dendritic spines remain elusive, possibly including blocking activation of Cofilin induced by beta amyloid,Ras activation, and inhibition of GSK-3 signaling pathway.Further understanding of the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying synaptic degeneration/loss following traumatic brain injury will advance the understanding of the pathophysiology induced by traumatic brain injury and may lead to the development of novel treatments for traumatic brain injury.
文摘This paper gives an overview of the research at Institute of Acoustics, Tongji University, on functional absorbers and experience acquired in practical applications over the past three decades. Cost effectiveness analysis is also given in order to provide design guidelines.

文摘Indium tin oxide (ITO) transparent conducting film was treated with oxygen plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was employed to characterize the effect. The results suggested that the oxygen content in the surface was increased and maintained for more than 50 h compared with traditional plasma-treated samples. Meanwhile, the work function of ITO estimated by comparing the peak shift in the XPS diagram suggested a corresponding increase by more than 1 eV.
文摘AIM To assess the knowledge of general pediatricians througout Indonesia about the diagnosis and treatment of childhood constipation.METHODS A comprehensive questionnaire was distributed to general pediatricians from several teaching hospitals and government hospitals all over Indonesia.RESULTS Data were obtained from 100 pediatricians, with a mean of 78.34 ± 18.00 mo clinical practice, from 20 cities throughout Indonesia. These findings highlight and confirm the difficulties in spreading existing information from guidelines to general pediatricians.
文摘Negative symptoms of schizophrenia including social withdrawal, diminished affective response, lack of interest, poor social drive, and decreased sense of purpose or goal directed activity predict poor functional outcomes for patients with schizophrenia. Academia, clinicians, the pharmaceutical industry, research funders, payers and regulators will need to work together to pursue novel treatments to address this major public health issue.

文摘Functionalized graphene nano-platelets(FGN) were obtained via treating graphene nanoplatelets(GN) with HNO3, and served as adsorbent for the removal of Pb2+from solutions. The results reveals that the FGN has better effect of water treatment.
文摘Functional dyspepsia constitutes by its impact in quality of life and socio-economic impact areal public health problem (40% of the adult population in the Western world). Sequential therapy is better than the standard triple therapy in the eradication of HP in patients with nonulcer dyspepsia, which improves their symptoms in more than 50% of cases.
