The paper is intended to study the cultural untranslatability in Chinese-English literary translation and its compensation with a view to find some practical strategies in translation when untranslatabiltiy occurs. Based on Eugene A. Nida’s classification of language culture, the author analyzes causes of cultural untranslatability in terms of ecological culture, material culture, social culture, religious culture, and linguistic culture through specific examples. As the cultural untranslatability is conditioned, variable, and dynamic, some translation strategies are proposed for tranferring untranslatability to translatability. 展开更多

The author analyzes the untranslatability of the classical Chinese poetry from the perspective of aesthetic function of language. The untranslatability lies firstly in the heterogeneity, indeterminism and the ambiguity of the Chinese language itself. Moreover, the classical Chinese poetry displays its unique features and beauty which can not be rendered into English in terms of aesthetic function of language. 展开更多

This paper aims to discuss translatability in the light of meaning and form. It argues that as translation involves only two aspects "understanding" and "expression" from the angle of translation process or "meaning" and "form" from the angle of expression, the latter sheds light on the controversy about translatability. It is form instead of meaning that obstructs translation, for meaning is mostly translatable or the basic meaning is translatable while form is not wholly translatable or is just untranslatable. Whether form is translatable or not depends on the similarity and difference of the formal features of the source language and the target language. 展开更多

Poems are the products of national culture, and A Dream of Red Mansions (A DRM) is the collection of Chinese culture in the era when the novel was written, so poems in A DRM express a wealth of cultural messages. According to the Limits of Translatability raised by Catford in 1965, cultural untranslatability occurs when a relevant situational feature for the SL text is absent in the TL. So this paper aims to find problems of cultranslation of poems in A DRM, and tries to further restrict cultural untranslatability by applying compensation strategies. 展开更多

As is known to all in the translation field, the problem of translatability and untranslatability has been a long-debated is sue in the field of translation. And the phenomenon of untranslatability is especially prominent in translation of literary works. This paper tries to discuss, from theory and practice, the phenomenon of untranslatability and its compensation strategies in trans lation between Chinese and English. It is roughly divided into two parts, wherein the first part deals with the phenomenon of un translatability, explaining its causes and giving some examples, and the second part deals with the compensation strategies, intro ducing several methods of compensation and taking The Original of Laura written by the deceased Russian-American writer Nabokov as an example. With the development of intercultural communication in the world and the great efforts of translators, the untranslatable words today can be translatable tomorrow. 展开更多

There is a strange phenomenon that the translated works of Chinese classics have not been enjoyed by a large readership abroad, stemming from the untranslatability of poetry,an inherent nature of poetry translation. It is argued with theoretical analyses coupled by case studies that linguistic untranslatability(including intralingual inequivalence, interlingual inequivalence),cultural untranslatability(intercultural inequivalence),translator's inadequacy and governmental or institutional translation briefs contribute to problem mentioned. It is hoped that once the factors influencing untranslatability of poetry is realized, translators'presumptuousness along with despondence can be lessened or even eradicated with a production of a better version free from overrepresentation or underrepresentation or misrepresentation of the originals. 展开更多

Translation is not only an exchange activity among languages, but also a process about transformation and communication of culture. Language and culture is a unity that language is the essential part of culture while culture is the nature and content of language communication. Because of its own history and distinctive geographical environment, culture has its unique ethnic features and psychological construction. All of these culture elements reflect on language. For different languages, there are great differences about the glyph, sound, words, rhetorical devices, and idioms. Such differences in language and culture between English and Chinese can cause the limitation of translatability in the process of translation. 展开更多

While translating the source language, one is inevitably introducing the culture. Approaches to culture involved in translation may be divided into two different methods: alienation (SL-culture oriented) and adaptation (TL-culture oriented). Idioms with rich national characteristics and specific linguistic features are called "concentrated culture". Therefore in idiom translation, there exist to some extent linguistic untranslatability and cultural untranslatability. In this paper, the author proposes to discuss the translatability of idioms and different approaches in English-Chinese/Chinese-English idiom translation. 展开更多

The goal theory of translation believes that translation is inevitably affected by translating-in and translating-out culture because it considers that translation belongs to the category of the study of human behavior. Moreover, communication of human beings is limited by linguistic environment, which is rooted in cultural habit. From this we can see that different linguistic environment determines the withdrawing of the meaning in word translation and also the judgment and understanding of translators toward different cultures. This thesis will explore the effects of numerous factors on word translation in cultural environment and the corresponding translation methods. Moreover, the translators also should understand correctly the cultural meanings of the words included and adopt corresponding methods. 展开更多

Classical Chinese poems(CCP) is regarded as the inheritance and treasure of Chinese culture. CCP translation, on one hand, makes us have access to explore the linguistic charming and the cultural value of classical Chinese poems; on the other hand, it provides an opportunity to transmit Chinese classical culture into western culture. While translatability of CCP translation, coupled with its untranslatability is considered a contentious topic in translation circle. Admittedly, in the process of CCP translation, some problems or barriers turn out to be our stumbling stone. But generally speaking, most of the poetry are translatable and untranslatability can be transformed into translatability with certain strategies. This thesis have compared the similarities and differences between Chinese and western poems to analyze the reasons why CCP can or cannot be translated and lays much emphasis on untranslatability as well as the compensation of untranslatability. Lastly, foreignization and domestication are recommended as two strategies in CCP translation when untranslatability occurs. 展开更多

The issue of the translatability of poetry is still under hot discussion. Translation of poetry was, and still is by some, believed as impossibility, for the myth of untranslatability looks upon poetry as beauty itself which is untouchable for once it is touched it is destroyed[1]. From different perspectives, such as the perspective of word formation, pun, reduplicated words etc, the author argues that poetic translation is translatable, and that poetry and aesthetics can be reproduced in another language and culture if accommodation is made. 展开更多

The question of whether or not languages are translatable has been argued for many years in the history of translation. There are many opposite idea on this question, for example, to what degree languages are translatable, and all this problems relating to translatability and untranslatability have always been difficult questions for further studying. Also, idioms are major components of a language. They are experience and lessons that people learned from years of hard work and life experiences, and they reflect the wisdom of human beings. In a word, when it comes to the translatability and untranslatability of Chinese idioms, there usually exist more obvious problems. Because Chinese idioms have certain ethnic characteristics and distinguishable cultural meanings, and more importantly they are deeply rooted in national culture and society. This essay first introduced the relationship between Untranslatability and Translatability, and then discussed the features of Chinese idioms, and later this essay mainly discussed the translatability and untranslatability in a translating process from a perspective of the translation of Chinese idioms. Finally, it gives some practical ways to reduce the untranslatability of Chinese idioms. 展开更多

This paper compares the linguistic revolutions of Russian Cubo-Futurist Velimir Khlebnikov and the American avant-garde poet and publisher Eugene Jolas in terms of their translatability. These two are prime examples for comparison because both were not only avid poets, but also renegade theorists engaged in apotropaic linguistic revolutions, desperately striving to stave off(or at least delay)the looming apocalypse via their words. While Khlebnikov strives to recreate a primeval language of transparency based on an exoteric mathematical structure,Eugene Jolas intentionally mixes languages to reflect more about their relations than mere words. Both strategies render the poetry of Khlebnikov and Jolas practically untranslatable but for very divergent reasons. 展开更多

Although with aggressive standards of care like surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiation,high-grade gliomas(HGGs)and brain metastases(BM)treatment has remained challenging for more than two decades. However, technological advances in this field and immunotherapeutic strategies have revolutionized the treatment of HGGs and BM.Immunotherapies like immune checkpoint inhibitors,CAR-T targeting, oncolytic virus-based therapy, bispecific antibody treatment, and vaccination approaches, etc.,are emerging as promising avenues offering new hope in refining patient’s survival benefits. However, selective trafficking across the blood-brain barrier(BBB),immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment(TME),metabolic alteration, and tumor heterogeneity limit the therapeutic efficacy of immunotherapy for HGGs and BM.Furthermore,to address this concern, the NanoBioTechnology-based bioinspired delivery system has been gaining tremendous attention in recent years. With technological advances such as Trojan horse targeting and infusing/camouflaging nanoparticles surface with biological molecules/cells like immunocytes, erythrocytes, platelets, glioma cell lysate and/or integrating these strategies to get hybrid membrane for homotypic recognition. These biomimetic nanotherapy offers advantages over conventional nanoparticles, focusing on greater target specificity, increased circulation stability, higher active loading capacity,BBB permeability(inherent inflammatory chemotaxis of neutrophils),decreased immunogenicity, efficient metabolism-based combinatorial effects, and prevention of tumor recurrence by induction of immunological memory, etc.provide new age of improved immunotherapies outcomes against HGGs and BM.In this review,we emphasize on neuro-immunotherapy and the versatility of these biomimetic nano-delivery strategies for precise targeting of hard-to-treat andmost lethal HGGs and BM.Moreover, the challenges impeding the clinical translatability of these approaches were addressed to unmet medical needs of brain cancers. 展开更多

Traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) is increasingly recognized worldwide as a valuable complementary and alternative medicine. To facilitate global research and collaboration in this field, the World Health Organization(WHO) introduced the International Standard Terminologies on Traditional Chinese Medicine in 2022. This international terminology translation standard, IST 2022, goes beyond conventional translation by embracing three innovative features: 1) It reflects TCM's foundational philosophy of unity and opposition, emphasizing the interconnectedness among TCM terms during translation. This approach transcends individual term translations to explore the interrelationships among them. 2) It preserves the integrity of TCM theory by retaining transliterations for unique TCM terms that possess distinct features. 3) It employs innovative xiang(image) cognition, a concept rooted in traditional Chinese thought by helping readers grasp visual and mental imagery associated with each term. This study presents a qualitative analysis based on interviews with 11 TCM translation experts, examining their perspectives on these features and their translational preferences across the IST 2007 and 2022 versions. These findings contribute to the standardization and global harmonization of TCM terminology, advocating for clarity, precision, and the advancement of TCM in the international healthcare arena. 展开更多
