Laser shock peening(LSP) is an innovative surface treatment method, which has been shown to greatly improve the fatigue life of many metallic components. This work investigates surface integrity of TC17 titanium alloy treated by LSP with innovative square laser spot.Nd:glass laser with duration of 30 ns and spot size of 4 mm×4 mm is applied. The surface morphology and surface residual stress of the TC17 titanium alloy, treated with varying peening parameters such as laser power density and overlapping ratio, have been studied in detail. The results show that laser pulse energy greatly influences surface morphology and surface residual stress around single-spot treated areas, and compressive residual stresses are saturated as laser pulse energy is over 55 J.There are significantly different surface morphologies and residual stress distributions at the overlapped areas with different overlapping ratios.A relative smooth surface is produced with uniform compressive residual stress distribution at an overlapping ratio of 8 %.The experiment of residual stress relaxation is implemented by measuring residual stress at the center of four overlapped spots and by four point bending fatigue test at the frequency of 105 Hz.The compressive residual stresses induced by LSP are found to relax quite slowly under cyclic fatigue loading. 展开更多

We put forward a protocolcombining laser treatment and acid etching to obtain multiscale micro/nano-texture surfaces of titanium alloy implant.Firstly, the operationalparameters of the laser were optimized to obtain an optimum current.Secondly, the laser with the optimum operationalparameters was used to fabricate micro pits.Thirdly, multiple acid etching was used to clean the clinkers of micro pits and generate submicron and nanoscale structures. Finally, the bioactivity of the samples was measured in a simulated body fluid. The results showed that the micropits with a diameter of 150 μm and depth of 50 μm were built successfully with the optimized working current of 13 A.In addition, submicron and nanoscale structures, with 0.5-2 μm microgrooves and 10-20 nm nanopits, were superimposed on micro pits surface by multiple acid etching. There was thick and dense HA coating only observed on the multiscale micro/nano-textured surface compared with polished and micro-textured surface. This indicated that the multiscale micro/nano-texture surface showed better ability toward HA formation, which increased the bioactivity of implants. 展开更多

Laser gas nitriding (LGN) is a common surface modification method to enhance the wear resistance of titanium (Ti) alloys, which are known to have poor tribological properties. In the present study, a titanium nitride (TIN) grid network was fabricated on the surface of nickel titanium (NiTi) by LGN. The laser processing parameters were selected to achieve nitriding without surface melting and hence to'maintain a smooth surface finish. The characteristics of the grid-nitrided samples were investigated by scanningelectron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, optical microscopy, 2-D profilometry, contact angle measurements and nanoindentation. The wear resistance of the nitrided samples was evaluated using reciprocating wear test against ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) in Hanks' solution. The results indicate that the wear rates of the grid-nitrided samples and the UHMWPE counter-body in the wear pair are both significantly reduced. The decrease in wear rates can be attributed to the combination of a hard TiN grid and a soft NiTi substrate. In Hanks' solution, the higher hydrophilicity of the nitrided samples also contributes to the better performance in wear test against hydrophobic UHMWPE. 展开更多

In this paper, laser melting deposition(LMD), a new advanced manufacture technology. While manufacturing a metal part by LMD process, if we could control the energy distribution in internal different areas such as cladding layer or that between cladding layer and the substrate with optimal process parameters, the probability of internal defects of parts can be reduced, and the mechanical properties of parts will be greatly improved. To address the problem that whether the part made by LMD has internal defects, in this paper we designed the orthogonal rotation experiments through selecting different process parameters. Then a Logistic Regression model was built based on the experiments data. The calculation result of the regression model was in good agreement with the result of authentication test. Therefore, this Logistic Regression model has important reference for selecting LMD process parameters. 展开更多
