Backfill is routinely adopted as a ground support measure for underground mines. However, ground stability enhancement by backfill has received limited research attention. This is likely to be because of the conventional assumption that the fill material exhibits a significantly lower stiffness than the host rocks.Significantly,a recent pioneering work revealed the time-dependent ground stability around a backfilled stope with vertical walls through numerical modeling. In practice, underground stopes typically exhibit a higher or lower degree of inclination. This alters the stress state in peripheral rocks and may induce severe instability and dilution, particularly in stope-hanging walls.Hence,it is imperative to analyze the time-dependent ground stability of inclined backfilled stopes for backfill structure design. Therefore, comprehensive numerical simulations were performed using FLAC3D to address this knowledge deficiency by incorporating a coupled analysis of the backfill consolidation behavior and long-term creep deformation in surrounding rocks. The ground stability was evaluated based on the confinement effectiveness,strength-stress ratio, stress path relative to the yield surface, and time-dependent stress redistribution in the rocks.A parametric study revealed that the inclination angle of the backfilled stope reduced the confinement effectiveness in the host rocks when the wall creep was minor. This exacerbated the rock mass sloughing potential. However,a backfilled stope with a shallower dip angle achieved superior ground stability enhancement when the creep deformation was substantial,by applying a more significant compression on the backfill and effectively mobilizing its passive support performance during consolidation.Additional simulations were conducted to analyze the effects of stope height and width, mine depth, mechanical properties of rocks, backfill compressibility, and filling gap on the time-dependent stress redistribution and stability around the inclined backfilled stope. 展开更多

In deep coal mining, surrounding rock is subjected to both high in-situ stress and intense mining disturbances, leading to significant time-dependent behavior.Accurately capturing this behavior is essential for predicting long-term roadway stability, necessitating the development of a reliable constitutive creep model and numerical simulation approach. In this study, creep experiments were conducted on pre-damaged rock with varying initial damage levels to investigate the time-dependent mechanical properties.Based on the experimental results,an accelerated-creep criterion was proposed, and an elastic-viscoplastic creep damage model(EVPCD)was established that simultaneously considers the effects of time-dependent damage and instantaneous damage caused by stress disturbances on rock creep behavior.Subsequently, the effectiveness of the proposed creep model was verified using experimental data, and the secondary development of the EVPCD model was completed based on the FLAC3D platform.Following this,a long-term stability analysis method of deep surrounding rock that accounts for excavation-and mining-induced disturbances was proposed.Using the main roadway of Xutuan Coal Mine as a case study, numerical simulations were carried out to investigate the time-dependent deformation and failure characteristics of the surrounding rock following excavation and mining disturbance.Combined with on-site monitoring of the surrounding rock damage areas, the results indicate that the EVPCD outperforms the CVISC and Nishihara models in predicting the time-dependent behavior of deep surrounding rock. 展开更多

In-situ stress is a key parameter for underground mine design and rock stability analysis. The borehole overcoring technique is widely used for in-situ stress measurement, but the rheological recovery deformation of rocks after stress relief introduces errors. To improve accuracy, this study proposes an in-situ stress solution theory that incorporates time-dependent stress relief effects.Triaxial stepwise loadingunloading rheological tests on granite and siltstone established quantitative relationships between instantaneous elastic recovery and viscoelastic recovery under different stress levels, confirming their impact on measurement accuracy.By integrating a dual-class elastic deformation recovery model,an improved in-situ stress solution theory was derived.Additionally, accounting for the nonlinear characteristics of rock masses,a determination method for time-dependent nonlinear mechanical parameters was proposed.Based on the CSIRO hollow inclusion strain cell,time-dependent strain correction equations and long-term confining pressure calibration equations were formulated. Finally, the proposed theory was successfully applied at one iron mine(736 m depth)in Xinjiang,China, and one coal mine(510 m depth)in Ningxia,China.Compared to classical theory, the calculated mean stress values showed accuracy improvements of 6.0%and 9.4%,respectively,validating the applicability and reliability of the proposed theory. 展开更多

The mild-slope equation derived by Berkhoff (1972), has widely been used in the numerical calculation of refraction and diffraction of regular waves. However, it is well known that the random sea waves has a significant effect in the refraction and diffraction problems. In this paper, a new form of time-dependent mild slope equation for irregular waves was derived with Fade approximation and Kubo's time series concept. The equation was simplified using WKB method, and simple and practical irregular mild slope equation was obtained. Results of numerical calculations are compared with those of laboratory experiments. 展开更多

Catastrophic failure in engineering structures of island reefs would occur when the tertiary creep initiates in coral reef limestone with a transition from short-to long-term load.Due to the complexity of biological structures, the underlying micro-behaviors involving time-dependent deformation are poorly understood. For this,an abnormal phenomenon was observed where the axial and lateral creep deformations were mutually independent by a series of triaxial tests under constant stress and strain rate conditions. The significantly large lateral creep deformation implies that the creep process cannot be described in continuum mechanics regime.Herein,it is hypothesized that sliding mechanism of crystal cleavages dominates the lateral creep deformation in coral reef limestone. Then, approaches of polarizing microscope(PM)and scanning electronic microscope(SEM)are utilized to validate the hypothesis. It shows that the sliding behavior of crystal cleavages combats with conventional creep micro-mechanisms at certain condition. The former is sensitive to time and strain rate, and is merely activated in the creep regime. 展开更多

A finite-difference approach is used to develop a time-dependent mild-slope equation incorporating the effects of bottom dissipation and nonlinearity. The Enler predietor-corrector method and the three-point finite-difference method with varying spatial steps are adopted to discretize the time derivatives and the two-dimensional horizontal ones, respectively, thus leading both the time and spatial derivatives to the second-order accuracy. The boundary conditions for the present model are treated on the basis of the general conditions for open and fixed boundaries with an arbitrary reflection coefficient and phase shift. Both the linear and nonlinear versions of the numerical model are applied to the wave propagation and transformation over an elliptic shoal on a sloping beach, respectively, and the linear version is applied to the simulation of wave propagation in a fully open rectangular harbor. From comparison of numerical results with theoretical or experimental ones, it is found that they are in reasonable agreement. 展开更多

The field of diffusion micro structural magnetic resonance(MR)aims to probe timedependent diffusion,i.e.,an ensemble-averaged mean-squared displacement that is not linear in time. This time-dependence contains rich information about the surrounding microenvironment.MR methods to measure time-dependent diffusion quantitatively, however, require either non-standard pulse sequences, such as oscillating gradients,or make non-physical assumptions, such as infinitely narrow gradient pulses. Here,we argue that standard spin echo and stimulated echo MR sequences can be used to probe directly. In particular,we propose a framework in which the log-signal ratio obtained from a pair of measurements with different inter-pulse spacingΔis proportional to the MSD between these twoΔvalues along the gradient direction x:-.The framework is quantitative for short,finite-duration gradient pulses and under the Gaussian phase approximation(GPA).To validate the framework,we consider onedimensional diffusion between impermeable, parallel planes,as well as periodicallyspaced, permeable planes.Excellent agreement is obtained between the estimation and the ground truth in the regime where the GPA is expected to hold.Importantly, the GPA can be made to hold for any underlying microstructure, making the proposed framework widely applicable. 展开更多

Heat transfers at the interface of adjacent saturated soil primarily through the soil particles and the water in the voids. The presence of water induces the contraction of heat flow lines at the interface, leading to the emergence of the thermal contact resistance effect. In this paper, four thermal contact models were developed to predict the thermal contact resistance at the interface of multilayered saturated soils.Based on the theory of thermal-hydro-mechanical coupling,semi-analytical solutions of thermal consolidation subjected to time-dependent heating and loading were obtained by employing Laplace transform and its inverse transformation.Thermal consolidation characteristics of multilayered saturated soils under four different thermal contact models were discussed, and the effects of thermal resistance coefficient, partition thermal contact coefficient, and temperature amplitude on the thermal consolidation process were investigated. The outcomes indicate that the general thermal contact model results in the most pronounced thermal gradient at the interface, which can be degenerated to the other three thermal contact models. The perfect thermal contact model overestimates the deformation of the saturated soil during the thermal consolidation. Moreover, the effect of temperature on consolidation properties decreases gradually with increasing interfacial contact thermal resistance. 展开更多

The Zagros Basin in southwestern Iran is a significant source of coal, with numerous coal mines operating in the region.Ensuring the stability of coal mines is crucial for safe and efficient mining operations. This study investigates the time-varying response of rocks and roof resistance in coal mines in the Zagros Mountains using a novel approach that combines numerical simulation, relaxation testing, and rock displacement studies. The results show that rocks exhibit significant time-dependent behavior, with changes in rock mechanical properties over time.A comprehensive viscoelastic-plastic model is devel-oped to accurately describe the time-varying strain-softening response of rocks and simulate laboratory tests. The model integrates the Burgers and strain-softening models, simulating stress relaxation curves and rock displacement over time. The study reveals that the rock mass displays significant nonlinear behavior, with changes in rock mechanical properties over time. The findings of this study highlight the importance of considering the time-varying response of rocks and roof resistance in coal mine stability analysis. The results provide valuable insights into the time-dependent behavior of rock mass in coal mines in Iran, which can inform mining practices and mitigate potential hazards. Results in this study can contribute to developing strategies for improving roof stability and reducing the likelihood of roof collapses. 展开更多

In the present paper, by introducing the effective wave elevation, we transform the extended elliptic mild-slope equation with bottom friction, wave breaking and steep or rapidly varying bottom topography to the simplest time-dependent hyperbolic equation. Based on this equation and the empirical nonlinear amplitude dispersion relation proposed by Li et al. (2003), the numerical scheme is established. Error analysis by Taylor expansion method shows that the numerical stability of the present model succeeds the merits in Song et al. (2007)'s model because of the introduced dissipation terms. For the purpose of verifying its performance on wave nonlinearity, rapidly varying topography and wave breaking, the present model is applied to study: (1) wave refraction and diffraction over a submerged elliptic shoal on a slope (Berkhoff et al., 1982); (2) Bragg reflection of monochromatic waves from the sinusoidal ripples (Davies and Heathershaw, 1985); (3) wave transformation near a shore attached breakwater (Watanabe and Maruyama, 1986). Comparisons of the numerical solutions with the experimental or theoretical ones or with those of other models (REF/DIF model and FUNWAVE model) show good results, which indicate that the present model is capable of giving favorably predictions of wave refraction, diffraction, reflection, shoaling, bottom friction, breaking energy dissipation and weak nonlinearity in the near shore zone. 展开更多

Steady speed control of agricultural machinery can improve operating quality and efficiency. To address the impact of farmland slope variations on the speed stability of unmanned operation agricultural machinery,a hybrid control method was proposed. This method included a hybrid controller composed of a slope-based controller and a proportional-integral-derivative(PID)controller.The speed of agricultural machinery was influenced by longitudinal forces, which were divided into two parts:one part was slope-related forces and conventional resistance, and the other was hard-to-estimate forces, such as sliding friction. For the first part,a slope-based controller was designed;for the second part,a PID controller was implemented.By combining these two controllers, the system can dynamically adjust the throttle opening and the brake master cylinder pressure, ensuring steady speed travel on sloping farmland.Simulation tests at a target speed of 7 km/h demonstrated that the proposed controller maintained a stable speed, achieving a root mean square error of 0.13 km/h and a mean absolute percentage error of 1.6%.Field tests on a practical experimental platform validated the method’s effectiveness, with results showing consistent control performance across varying slope conditions. The proposed controller demonstrated superior control performance.Experimental data verified that this method can achieve precise control of the agricultural machinery’s movement speed, meeting the stability requirements for agricultural operations. 展开更多

In recent years, numerous recurrent neural network(RNN)models have been reported for solving time-dependent nonlinear optimization problems. However, few existing RNN models simultaneously involve nonlinear equality constraints, direct discretization, and noise suppression. This limitation presents challenges when existing models are applied to practical engineering problems.Additionally, most current discrete-time RNN models are derived from continuous-time models, which may not perform well for solving essentially discrete problems. To handle these issues,a robust direct-discretized RNN(RDD-RNN)model is proposed to efficiently realize time-dependent optimization constrained by nonlinear equalities(TDOCNE)in the presence of various time-dependent noises.Theoretical analyses are provided to reveal that the proposed RDD-RNN model possesses excellent convergence and noise-suppressing capability.Furthermore, numerical experiments and manipulator control instances are conducted and analyzed to validate the superior robustness of the proposed RDD-RNN model under various time-dependent noises, particularly quadratic polynomial noise.Eventually, small target detection experiments further demonstrate the practicality of the RDD-RNN model in image processing applications. 展开更多

The banks in the middle and lower reaches of the Tarim River in China are weak in erosion resistance and prone to collapse.Vegetation,as a natural reinforcement material, can effectively improve slope stability and curb soil erosion. In March and July 2023,a field survey was conducted on the types and distribution characteristics of vegetation along both banks of a certain section in the lower reaches of the Tarim River.Taking COMSOL Multiphysics as the finite element numerical simulation platform,we investigated the variation law of bank slope stability in the middle and lower reaches of the Tarim River under different root morphologies, considering changes in transpiration time, rainfall, and water level under the action of hydro-mechanical reinforcement. The findings showed that vegetation transpiration has a significant effect on soil pore water pressure.Given the same transpiration rate, shorter root systems produced greater pore water pressure. For equal root lengths, the pore water pressures generated by roots in exponential and triangular morphologies were significantly greater than those generated by roots in uniformly distributed and parabolic morphologies. The water absorption capacity of the root system increased with transpiration rate. After 7 d of transpiration, the maximum safety factor of the bank slope reinforced by exponential roots was 1.568,which was a 9.88%improvement over that of the bare slope. After 24 h of rainfall, the effect of vegetation transpiration on soil pore water pressure weakened rapidly;the pore water pressure of the surface soil generated by transpiration from vegetation with different root morphologies was concentrated near–10.00 kPa.After rainfall, the displacement of the exponential root reinforced slope was minimized to 0.137 m.The effect of transpiration-induced changes in substrate suction on slope stability was negligible during the rainfall period.Compared with that of the bare slope, the displacements of bank slopes reinforced by root systems significantly increased. The maximum displacement occurred when the water level changed by 1.5 m/d;the displacement of the bare slope was 0.554 m,whereas the displacements of bank slopes reinforced by roots in different morphologies were 0.260–0.273 m.The impact of vegetation transpiration on the safety factor of riverbanks under sudden water level drops was relatively minor, but it can enhance the stability of riverbanks to a certain extent.Among these, riverbanks reinforced by roots in triangular and exponential morphologies exhibited superior stability compared with those reinforced by uniformly distributed or parabolic root systems. The findings offer a theoretical basis and practical guidance for designing vegetation slope protection in the middle and lower reaches of the Tarim River. 展开更多

Rock slope instability is a prevalent geological hazard that imposes significant adverse impacts on engineering activities.Although existing studies have focused on homogeneous rock slopes, the theoretical models for quantifying the stability of softhard interbedded anti-inclined slopes remain underdeveloped, primarily due to the complex force transfer mechanisms involved. This study proposed a novel theoretical model for the stability analysis of soft-hard interbedded anti-inclined slopes under rainfall conditions. The framework models stratified rock layers as layered cantilever beams with material heterogeneity.Based on the principle of deformation compatibility,it comprehensively accounted for interlayer force transfer and strength degradation resulting from differential deformations among rock layers.Furthermore,it integrated the critical instability length induced by the self-weight of rock layers to determine the fracture depth. The proposed method was validated against engineering case studies and physical model tests, with error falling within an acceptable range.Compared to existing theoretical methods, the proposed method provided a more realistic representation of the slope's stress field. The analysis results demonstrate that rainfall not only reduces the inclination angle of the failure surface but also leads to an approximate 30%decrease in the safety factor. The proposed theoretical model is particularly useful for quickly calculating the stability of soft-hard interbedded anti-inclined rock slope under rainfall conditions, compared to complex and time-consuming numerical simulation calculations. 展开更多

Slope units are divided according to the real topography and have clear geological characteristics, making them ideal units for evaluating the susceptibility to geological disasters.Based on the results of automatically and manually corrected hydrological slope unit division, the Longhua District,Shenzhen City,Guangdong Province, was selected as the study area.A total of 15 influencing factors, namely Fluctuation, slope, slope aspect, curvature, topographic witness index(TWI),stream power index(SPI),topographic roughness index(TRI),annual average rainfall, distance to water system, engineering rock group, distance to fault, land use, normalized difference vegetation index(NDVI),nighttime light, and distance to road, were selected as evaluation indicators. The information volume model(IV)and random points were used to select non-geological disaster units, and then the random forest model(RF)was used to evaluate the susceptibility to geological disasters. The automatic slope unit and the hydrological slope unit were compared and analyzed in the random forest and information volume random forest models. The results show that the area under the curve(AUC)values of the automatic slope unit evaluation results are 0.931 for the IV-RF model and 0.716 for the RF model, which are 0.6%(IV-RF model)and 1.9%(RF model)higher than those for the hydrological slope unit.Based on a comparison of the evaluation methods based on the two types of slope units, the hydrological slope unit evaluation method based on manual correction is highly subjective,is complicated to operate, and has a low evaluation accuracy, whereas the evaluation method based on automatic slope unit division is efficient and accurate,is suitable for large-scale efficient geological disaster evaluation, and can better deal with the problem of geological disaster susceptibility evaluation. 展开更多

The stability of rock slopes is frequently controlled by the initiation and propagation of inherent dominant cracks. This study systematically investigated these processes in valley slopes by combining fracture-mechanics analysis with transparent soil model tests. An analytical expression for the stress field at the dominant crack tip was derived from the slope stress distribution by superposing the corresponding stress intensity factors(SIFs).The theoretical predictions were then validated against observations from transparent soil model tests. The influences of slope angle(β),crack inclination angle(α),crack position parameter(b),and crack length parameter(h)on crack initiation and propagation were quantified. The results indicated that:(1)cracks at the slope crest tended to propagate in shear mode, and the shear crack initiation angle(θ_(s))was approximately 8°.Cracks at the slope toe might propagate in either tensile or shear mode.(2)θ_(s) at the slope crest increased withβ,b,and l,and decreased withα.The maximum change inθ_(s) induced by the considered parameters was approximately 30°.(3)The tensile crack initiation angle(θ_(t))at the slop toe decreased withβ,α,and l,while the influence of b was comparatively minor. The maximum change inθ_(t) caused by individual parameters ranged approximately from 25°to 60°.Predicted crack propagation modes and directions showed good agreement with experimental results. These findings provide theoretical guidance for stability assessments of valley slopes controlled by dominant crack propagation. 展开更多

Investigating the wind-sand flow response regularity in the longitudinal slope sections of desert highways provides a scientific basis for selecting the slope of desert roads. This study uses the Tengger Desert section of the Wuhai-Maqin Expressway as a case study, employing CFD numerical simulation methods to calculate and analyze the wind-sand flow field distribution characteristics in different longitudinal slope sections. The results show that:(1)Along with the direction of the incoming flow, the windward and leeward slope toes of the embankment are low-wind-speed zones, with the wind speed at the leeward slope toe being even lower. The higher the embankment, the larger the low-wind-speed zone at the windward and leeward slope toes.As the longitudinal slope increases, the extent of the lowwind-speed zone at the same location along the route also increases.(2)Along the route direction, the wind speed at the windward and leeward slope toes decreases as embankment height increases. At the embankment toe, sand particles are transported from the top to the bottom of the longitudinal slope, and the greater the longitudinal slope, the stronger the transport effect.(3)Along the route direction, the sand accumulation around the embankment gradually gathers toward the bottom of the longitudinal slope as the slope increases. When the longitudinal slope is 3%and 4%,the trend of sand accumulation moving from the windward side at the end of the route to the leeward side at the start of the route is more significant. When the longitudinal slope is less than or equal to 3%,severe sand accumulation within the embankment range is reduced by 86.4%or more compared to when the slope is 4%.(4)Under the same longitudinal slope, the higher the embankment height, the smaller its transport rate. When the embankment height is the same, the greater the longitudinal slope, the greater the embankment transport rate. 展开更多
