Three monodirectional Gutou mortise-tenon joints were designed according to the actual configurations. The failure modes, the hysteretic curves, the skeleton curves, the rotation rigidities, and the energy dissipation capacity of this type of mortise-tenon joints under the low cyclic reversed loading were obtained. The results show that the hysteretic curves of the monodirectional Gutou mortise-tenon joints appear to be Z shape and have obvious pinch effects. During the process of the test, these mortisetenon joints pass orderly through the elastic stage, the yield stage and the failure stage. The energy dissipation capacity of these mortise-tenon joints generally decreases with the increase in the rotation angle. The equivalent viscous damping coefficients of the monodirectional Gutou mortise-tenon joints are between 0. 161 and 0. 193. The results can provide the theoretical base for the computing analysis and repair design of Chinese traditional timber buildings in the Yangtze River region.展开更多

In recent years, the over-supply of grains and rapid degradation of agricultural environment call for alternative crops that can be developed through integrating the environmental plantation with the market demands. Closely associated with forestry and agriculture, bamboo is able to deal with the new challenges which Chinas agriculture is facing. Of 534 documented bamboo species in China, 153 species produce edible-shoots and of which 56 species are recommended for agricultural plantation; 139 species provide timbers and of which 58 species recommended; 116 species can be splited as good strips for weaving and of which 22 species recommended; 88 species are considered as garden bamboos and of which 34 species recommended; 45 species are able to produce paper pulp and of which 18 species recommended.展开更多

The general procedure in designing a grand style timber structure is to start with the grade that defines the basic module (dou kou); next comes with the number of bracket set (cuan), the number of longitudinal bays and the number of purlins which affect its plan and cross section; thirdly choose a roof type that determines its longitudinal section and the facade as well. A series of formulae are conducted to help depict the layout, cross sectional roof curvature and special longitudinal treatments in 4 sloped and 9 spined roofs respectively.展开更多

On the basis of the relationship between forest ecosystem services and classified forest management, we hypothesized that the ecological-forest provides ecological services, whereas commercial-forest supplies wood and timber production, and the influences of the growth of population, social-economic development target, forest management methods and the technology changes on forest resources were also taken into account. The prediction reveals that the demand of total forestland of China will be 244.8, 261.2 and 362.2 million ha by the year 2010, 2020 and 2050, respectively. The results demonstrated that China will be confronted with a shortage of forest resources, especially with lack of ecological-oriented forests, in the future. It is suggested that sustainable management of forest resources must be reinforced and more attention should be drown no enhancing the service function of forest ecosystem.展开更多

A diffusion-like equation was used to describe drying process data. The lumber was idealized in the modeling as infinite plates. The moisture transport process inside the board was assumed to be one-dimensional. The macroscopic drying kinetics curves of larch timber at particular conditions were determined experimentally. Based on these data, calculation for both the moisture diffusion coefficients and moisture transfer coefficients by the Dincer's analytical procedure were made. The dynamic moisture diffusion coefficients by the traditional Crank's method were calculated. In general, diffusion coefficients calculated by the Dincer's method were all higher than those by Crank's method. These results could be due to the differences between two analytical methods and also different characteristics between solid moisture diffusion process and heat transfer process. Therefore the analysis and solution procedures of moisture diffusion differential equations need to be adapted in the future. With drying temperature's increasing moisture diffusion coefficient (D) and moisture transfer coefficient (k) increases accordingly. Also the relationships between diffusion coefficients and temperature as well as material moisture contents were analyzed by using Arrhenius equation and bound water transport theory.展开更多

Factors like the source and age of explants, plant growth regulators (PGRs), media composition, and carbon source affected multiple shoot-ing in the present study. Among all the explants used, only shoot tips derived from one, two, and three week old seedlings could form multiple shoots. Besides, the formation of multiple shoots depended on the con-centration and combination of PGRs. Among all the PGRs, BAP (6-benzylaminopurine) alone gave the highest regeneration efficiency. Simi-larly, IBA (Indole-3-butyric acid) was the most efficient PGR in inducing root formation in the microshoots. Media composition and carbon source also affected the regeneration efficiency. MS (Murashige and Skoog medium) proved to be the best media for regeneration followed by B5, SH (Schenk and Hilderbrandt medium) and WPM (Woody plant medium) in that order. Similarly, among sugars, only sucrose and glucose sup-ported induction of microshoots. Based on this study we recommend the use of glucose in place of sucrose in MS medium for maximum regenera-tion efficiency.展开更多

Information collected from a total of 60 households ranging from marginal, small, medium and large categories. Number of plant species increased with the increase of homestead area. A total of 33 plant species were recorded from the homegarden, of which 19 were fruit and 14 were timber tree species. Considerable number of vegetables was also planted under the shade of the homestead trees. The investment analysis showed that average benefit-cost ratios were greater than one, net present values were positive and internal rate of returns were more than 10%. Long term investment on horticulture and timber tree species is highly profitable if species like Artocarpus heterophyllus, Cocos nucifera, Tectona grandis and Swietenia macrophylla are planted.展开更多

Cross-specific amplification of microsatellite loci among closely related taxa could enhance our ability to study and manage previously unstudied species. We successfully utilized STMS markers in Shorea platyclados, originally developed for Shorea curtisii. The six primer pairs we tried successfully produced PCR products of expected sizes. The number of alleles observed ranged from 10 to 14 and an average of 12 alleles were detected per locus. A high expected and observed heterozygosity was observed and it ranges from 0.718 to 0.827 among all populations across all six loci tested. Microsatellite DNA markers are highly polymorphic, co-dominant, reproducible, and amenable to high throughput genetic analyses. Overall, the cross- specific amplification of microsatellite loci appears to be complicated by numerous factors. While the approach may be effective for local management and conservation ofpoorly known species, the results must be carefully interpreted.展开更多

文摘Exotic tree species, though widely used in forestry and restoration projects, pose great threats to local ecosystems. They need to be replaced with native species from natural forests. We hypothesized that natural forests contain large,fast-growing,dominant native tree species that are suitable for specific topographic conditions in forestry. We tested this hypothesis using data from a 50-ha forest dynamics plot in subtropical China. We classified the plot into the ridge, slope, and valley habitats and found that 34/87 species had significant associations with at least one topographic habitat. There were 90 tree species with a maximum diameter≥30 cm,and their abundances varied widely in all habitat types. In all habitat types, for most species, rate of biomass gain due to recruitment was<1%of its original biomass, and rate of biomass gain due to tree growth was between 1 and 5%of its original biomass. For most species, biomass loss due to tree mortality was not significantly different than biomass gain due to recruitment, but the resulting net biomass increment rates did not significantly differ from zero. The time required to reach a diameter of 30 cm from 1 cm diameter for Altingia chinensis in the slope habitat, for Quercus chungii and Morella rubra in the ridge habitat and for Castanopsis carlesii in all habitats could be as short as 30 years in our simulations based on actual distributions of tree growth observed in the forest.Principal component analyses of maximum diameter, abundance and net biomass increment rates suggested several species were worthy of further tests for use in forestry. Our study provides an example for screening native tree species from natural forests for forestry.Because native tree species are better for local ecosystems, our study will also contribute to biodiversity conservation in plantations.

文摘Platform-style construction is a widely recognized and well-established approach among engineers and developers for multi-story mass timber buildings. This construction method offers many advantages, such as rapid assembly,an excellent strength-to-weight ratio, and appealing aesthetic features. In a platform-type construction, each story is constructed by placing the floor panels on top of the load-bearing wall, creating a platform for the level above.Although this method offers numerous advantages, recent research findings have revealed that cross-laminated(CLT)platform buildings with conventional connections, such as wall-to-floor hold-down brackets and shear connectors with nails and screws, are prone to experience a high degree of damage under design-level earthquakes.Consequently, conventional connections in platform-type construction are vulnerable to more damage under aftershocks and do not meet the damage avoidance requirements of seismic design. This paper introduces an innovative floor-to-wall connection for a platform-type low-rise mass timber building that mitigates the limitations of conventional connections. The effectiveness of the proposed connection has been investigated, and the seismic performance of the system, which incorporates the proposed connection, has been outlined in this paper.A numerical model with an innovative inter-story isolation system is developed in ETABS,and the seismic performance of the isolated structure was evaluated using Response Spectrum Analysis(RSA)and Nonlinear Time History Analysis(NLTHA).This study revealed that inter-story isolation systems significantly reduced the seismic demands on the mass timber components, demonstrating the system’s ability to dissipate seismic energy.Additionally, the system displayed effective energy dissipation while exhibiting self-centering behaviour.

文摘As iconic structures in Dong ethnic villages of Guizhou, drum towers hold significant cultural and architectural value. However, research on their mechanical behavior, particularly the mechanical performance of their joints, remains limited, with numerical simulation studies lagging behind theoretical and experimental investigations. This study first establishes an orthotropic elastoplastic constitutive model for timber based on experimental data from Chuandou-style timber structures, determining key parameters such as elastic modulus, shear strength, and plastic strain.Subsequently,a refined finite element model was established using ABAQUS,and its reliability was validated through comparative analysis of stress nephograms, skeleton curves, and other key outcomes with experimental data. The findings provide valuable references for engineering design.

文摘The tropical timber trade faces significant sustainability challenges, including deforestation, illegal logging, and inadequate traceability.Inaccurate species identification further complicates these issues, leading to unreliable trade statistics and enforcement challenges. The Lacey Act Amendment(LAA)of 2008 mandated declaring scientific names for timber shipments entering the United States. Therefore, this study assessed the implementation of the LAA using data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request to the United States Department of Agriculture-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service for 4 tropical timber species including Keruing,Meranti,Acajou d’Afrique, and Mahogany from Indonesia,Malaysia,Brazil,Philippines,Cameroon,Ghana,Congo,Cote d’Ivoire, and Bolivia, with high rates of illegal logging. This study showed that the United States imported 49 species of Keruing species group,126 species of Meranti species group,6 species of Acajou d’Afrique species group, and 2 species of Mahogany species group during 2017-2023.Despite mandatory declarations, approximately 14.60%of timber import records lacked species-specific names.Conservation assessments identified 37 species of Keruing species group and 68 species of Meranti species group listed as threatened by the International Union for Conservation of Nature(IUCN)but absent from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora(CITES).Moreover, the principal component analysis(PCA)indicated that the first principal component was primarily driven by import value and import volume, reflecting the overall trade prominence, while the second principal component captured temporal pattern through import year.Further, this study developed a Trade-Adjusted Conservation Priority Index(TACPI)that integrated conservation status with trade prominence to prioritize species at risk.Species with high TACPI scores, such as Dipterocarpus coriaceus and Shorea balangeran, were identified as urgently needing regulatory focus. To strengthen sustainable trade and conservation,it is recommended to enforce the LAA more strictly, expand timber identification technologies, and mandate key supplier countries, who are the CITES’signatories,to list high-risk species in the CITES appendices.

文摘The mechanical properties of the monodirectional Gutou mortise-tenon joints of the ancient Chinese traditional timber buildings in the Yangtze River region were studied using the experimental method. The equivalent viscous damping coefficients of the monodirectional Gutou mortise-tenon joints are between 0. 161 and 0. 193. The results can provide the theoretical base for the computing analysis and repair design of Chinese traditional timber buildings in the Yangtze River region.
文摘In the past, utilization of bamboo resources in China has been traditionally dominated by direct consumption of local farmers as minor forest products with weak linkage with market. Of 534 documented bamboo species in China, 153 species produce edible-shoots and of which 56 species are recommended for agricultural plantation; 139 species provide timbers and of which 58 species recommended; 116 species can be splited as good strips for weaving and of which 22 species recommended; 88 species are considered as garden bamboos and of which 34 species recommended; 45 species are able to produce paper pulp and of which 18 species recommended.

文摘This article, by using mathematical expressions, offers a scientific framework for understanding how the grading system of Qing′s structural carpentry determines the design and construction in the grand style timber architecture. The Qing′s grand style timber structure, which is ready for prefabrication and assembly, is extremely hierarchical oriented and significantly standardized. A series of formulae are conducted to help depict the layout, cross sectional roof curvature and special longitudinal treatments in 4 sloped and 9 spined roofs respectively.

文摘Traditional wooden joinery is the craft of connecting wood pieces for buildings or producing utensils by utilizing only the geometry of the components and material properties of the wood, without other materials such as glue or metal connectors. In its thousands of years of tradition, this construction technique has achieved high accomplishment in both East Asian and European architectural civilizations.Although sharing the same basic principles, joinery techniques vary between regions and cultures, rooted in the geographical environment, available wood species and their material properties, characteristics of craftsmanship, tools, and structural systems.Wood framing systems from China,Japan, and Western Europe are selected for comparison to assess the relationship between wood joinery and other aspects of building technology. The main conclusions include:in East Asia, the building tradition pays great attention to the design and execution of joinery(sunmao榫卯),making it responsible for multiple functions including architectural mechanics and the stability of the entire frame, which leads to a broader role meant by the term“joint”itself, while in Europe joinery is treated as the“node”or literally“joint”of the structure.Although in both East Asia and Europe wooden joinery serves as an aesthetic factor of the structure, its expression in East Asia is subtle, veiled, and restrained, while in Europe it is explicit and direct. The most important lesson we learn from the study of traditional joinery technology is that it should be seen in the context of the building process as a whole, taking into account geographical environment, material resources, craftsmanship, tools, construction methods, structural form, and the structural system.

文摘A new model was developed to predict forestland demand of China during the years of 2010-2050 in terms of the concept of forest ecosystem services. It is suggested that sustainable management of forest resources must be reinforced and more attention should be drown no enhancing the service function of forest ecosystem.
文摘This study addresses the increasing demand for large-diameter production timber, and considers the time and space variability of half-sib families of Pinus massoniana.Height, diameter at breast height(DBH)and timber volume of 440 open-pollinated half-sib progeny families were investigated in 14 progeny trials in different years and production regions. An evaluation of the genetic variation of all half-sib families was carried out during the sustainable rapid growth period and individual volumes were characterized as a major index.ANOVA analysis showed that there was considerable variance in the growth traits of most families in different years and on different sites. The variations caused by temporal and spatial changes of the mating system required three selection methods for analysis. The results show that there were differences among the heritabilities of different growth traits by different halfsib progenies.Average heritability values of height,DBH and volume were 0.33,0.34 and 0.36,respectively.Fortyfive superior families were selected in every progeny test,12 were selected in progeny trials by different years and five in different habitat progeny trials.Three superior families(Gui GC553A,Gui GC414A and Gui GC431A)were selected, although in different years and production regions. The genetic gains of timber volume of these selected r families ranged from 1.20 to 47.00%,which could provide a foundation for superior wood property selection and serve as material for seed improvement and extension in surrounding areas.
文摘Two analytical procedures (Crank's method and Dincer's method) for porous solid materials were reevaluated and used to determine moisture diffusion coefficients and moisture transfer coefficients for larch lumber subjected to drying. Also the relationships between diffusion coefficients and temperature as well as material moisture contents were analyzed by using Arrhenius equation and bound water transport theory.
文摘This paper reports on the effect of various micropropagation factors of Gmelina arborea Roxb. through multiple shoot induction. Based on this study we recommend the use of glucose in place of sucrose in MS medium for maximum regenera-tion efficiency.
文摘This study was performed in five villages of Sandwip Upazila, Chittagong district with a view to identify the tree resources, utilization pattern and economic return of major fruit and timber tree species. Long term investment on horticulture and timber tree species is highly profitable if species like Artocarpus heterophyllus, Cocos nucifera, Tectona grandis and Swietenia macrophylla are planted.

文摘In the megadiverse forests of Southeast Asia, hundreds of timber species are economically important but the population genetics of only a few taxa are known. While the approach may be effective for local management and conservation ofpoorly known species, the results must be carefully interpreted.
