This study presents an effective hybrid simulation approach for simulating broadband ground motion in complex near-fault locations. The approach utilizes a deterministic approach based on the spectral element method(SEM),which is used to simulate low-frequency ground motion(f<1 Hz)by incorporating an innovative efficient discontinuous Galerkin(DG)method for grid division to accurately model basin sedimentary layers at reduced costs. It also introduces a comprehensive hybrid source model for high-frequency random scattering and a nonlinear analysis module for basin sedimentary layers.Deterministic outcomes are combined with modified three-dimensional stochastic finite fault method(3D-EXSIM)simulations of high-frequency ground motion(f>1 Hz).A fourth-order Butterworth filter with zero phase shift is employed for time-domain filtering of low-and high-frequency time series at a crossover frequency of 1 Hz,merging the low and high-frequency ground motions into a broadband time series.Taking an Ms 6.8 Luding earthquake,as an example, this hybrid method was used for a rapid and efficient simulation analysis of broadband ground motion in the region. The accuracy and efficiency of this hybrid method were verified through comparisons with actually observed station data and empirical attenuation curves.Deterministic method simulation results revealed the effects of mountainous topography, basin effects, nonlinear effects within the basin’s sedimentary layers, and a coupling interaction between the basin and the mountains. The findings are consistent with similar studies, showing that near-fault sedimentary basins significantly focus and amplify strong ground motion, and the soil’s nonlinear behavior in the basin influences ground motion to varying extents at different distances from the fault. The mountainous topography impacts the basin’s response to ground motion, leading to barrier effects. This research provides a scientific foundation for seismic zoning, urban planning, and seismic design in nearfault mountain basin regions. 展开更多

The neutral grounding mode of medium-voltage distribution network decides the reliability, overvoltage, relay protection and electrical safety. Therefore, a comprehensive consideration of the reliability, safety and economy is particularly important for the decision of neutral grounding mode. This paper proposes a new decision method of neutral point grounding mode for mediumvoltage distribution network. The objective function is constructed for the decision according the life cycle cost. The reliability of the neutral point grounding mode is taken into account through treating the outage cost as an operating cost. The safety condition of the neutral point grounding mode is preserved as the constraint condition of decision models, so the decision method can generate the most economical and reliable scheme of neutral point grounding mode within a safe limit. The example is used to verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the decision method. 展开更多

The March 28,2025 Myanmar earthquake generated ground shaking that was perceptible throughout Myanmar and adjacent regions. This study simulated three-component ground motions across the affected region using an improved stochastic finite-fault method to systematically assess seismic impacts.Observed near-field recordings at MM.NGU station was used to determine the reliability of the theoretically derived stress drop as input for simulation.Far-field recordings constrained the frequency-dependent S-wave quality factors(Q(f)=283.305f^(0.588))for anelastic attenuation modeling.Comparisons of peak accelerations between simulation and empirical ground-motion models showed good agreement at moderate-to-large distances. However, lower near-fault simulations indicate a weaker-than-average source effect.Analysis of simulated instrumental seismic intensity revealed key patterns.Maximum intensity(Ⅹ)occurred in isolated patches within the ruptured fault projection, correlating with shallow high-slip areas.TheⅨ-intensity zone formed a north-south elongated band centered on fault projection.Significant asymmetry inⅧ-intensity distribution perpendicular to the fault strike was observed, with a wider western extension attributed to lower shear-wave velocities west of the fault.Supershear rupture behavior enhanced ground motions, expanding intensity ranges by~20%compared to sub-shear rupture. This study reveals the integrated effects of fault geometry, slip spatial distribution, rupture velocity, and site condition in governing ground motion patterns. 展开更多

The research findings on the ground motion and liquefaction potential analyses during the 2018 Great Indonesia Earthquake(M_(w)7.5)are significant and crucial. The earthquake triggered soil-structure damage due to liquefaction. This study, which thoroughly investigated four sites at Palu, was conducted by performing a comprehensive ground motion parameter analysis. The ground motion characteristics were presented and justified, particularly for the most impacted direction.Ground motion predictions were analysed to define the spectral accelerations, and matching spectral accelerations were conducted to produce ground motions for each site.Non-linear seismic ground response analysis based on the hyperbolic model of pressure pressure-dependent was performed to investigate cyclic soil behaviour. The results revealed that ground motion is crucial in significant soil damage, and the earthquake energy could trigger deep liquefaction. As the most significant ground motion, the vertical ground motion is essential in determining deep liquefaction. The discussion on the impact of liquefaction based on the results of the numerical analysis is presented.Significant ground motion with a longer duration could have a substantial impact on deep liquefaction in the study area. These findings depict how the 2018 Indonesia Earthquake(M_(w)7.5)triggered a mega-liquefaction in Palu City. The results could enhance the understanding of the importance of seismic hazard assessment. It is recommended that site investigation and soil improvement should be planned to counteract liquefaction damage before construction. This study also suggests conducting seismic hazard assessments for city development to minimise the potential disaster impact in the study area. 展开更多

Prediction on the coupled thermal-hydraulic fields of embankment and cutting slopes is essential to the assessment on evolution of melting zone and natural permafrost table, which is usually a key factor for permafrost embankment design in frozen ground regions. The prediction may be further complicated due to the inherent uncertainties of material properties. Hence, stochastic analyses should be conducted. Firstly, Karhunen-Loeve expansion is applied to attain the random fields for hydraulic and thermal conductions. Next, the mixed-form modified Richards equation for mass transfer (i.e., mass equation) and the heat transport equation for heat transient flow in a variably saturated frozen soil are combined into one equation with temperature unknown. Furthermore, the finite element formulation for the coupled thermal-hydraulic fields is derived. Based on the random fields, the stochastic finite element analyses on stability of embankment are carried out. Numerical results show that stochastic analyses of embankment stability may provide a more rational picture for the distribution of factors of safety (FOS), which is definitely useful for embankment design in frozen ground regions. 展开更多

The authors give the solution to the problem of one-dimensional conso l idation of double-layered ground with the use of the differential quadrature me t hod. Case studies showed that the computational results for pore-water pressure in soil layer agreed with those of analytical solution; and that in the computat ional results for the interface of soil layer also agreed with those of the anal ytical solution except for the small discrepancies during shortly after the star t of computation. The advantages of the solution presented in this paper are tha t compared with the analytical solution, it avoids the cumbersome work in solvin g the transcendental equation for eigenvalues, and in the case of the Laplace transform s olution, it can resolve the precision problem in the numerical solution of long time inverse Laplace transform. Because of the matrix form of the solution in th is paper, it is convenient for formulating computational program for engineering practice. The formulas for calculating double-layered ground consolidation may be easily extended to the case of multi-layered soils. 展开更多

The conventional method which assumes the soil distribution is continuous was unsuitable for estimating soil organic carbon density(SOCD) in Karst areas because of its discontinuous soil distribution. The accurate estimation of SOCD in Karst areas is essential for carbon sequestration assessment in China. In this study, a modified method, which considers the vertical proportion of soil area in the profile when calculating the SOCD, was developed to estimate the SOCD in a typical Karst peak-cluster depression area in southwest China. In the modified method, ground-penetrating radar(GPR) technology was used to detect the distribution and thickness of soil. The accuracy of the method was confirmed through comparison with the data obtained using a validation method, in which the soil thickness was measured by excavation. In comparison with the conventional method and average-soil-depth method, the SOCD estimated using the GPR method showed the minimum relative error with respect to that obtained using the validation method. At a regional scale, the average SOCDs at depths of 0-20 cm and 0-100 cm, which were interpolated by ordinary kriging, were 1.49(ranging from 0.03-5.65) and 2.26(0.09-11.60) kgm-2based on GPR method in our study area(covering 393.6 hm2), respectively. Therefore, the modified method can be applied on the accurate estimation of SOCD in discontinuous soil areas such as Karst regions. 展开更多

The ground penetrating radar(GPR) forward simulation all aims at the singular and regular models, such as sandwich model, round cavity, square cavity, and so on, which are comparably simple. But as to the forward of curl interface underground or “v” figure complex model, it is difficult to realize. So it is important to forward the complex geoelectricity model. This paper takes two Maxwell’s vorticity equations as departure point, makes use of the principles of Yee’s space grid model theory and the basic principle finite difference time domain method, and deduces a GPR forward system of equation of two dimensional spaces. The Mur super absorbed boundary condition is adopted to solve the super strong reflection on the interceptive boundary when there is the forward simulation. And a self-made program is used to process forward simulation to two typical geoelectricity model. 展开更多

In recent years, in reaction to the increasing usage of urban areas, the excavation of underground spaces has been developed. One of the most challenging issues encountered by engineers is the construction of subway stations as large underground spaces at shallow depth with soft surrounding soils. In this paper, Naghshe Jahan Square subway station located in Isfahan, Iran, has been simulated by geomechanical fnite difference method(FDM). This station is located under important historical structures. Therefore, the ground displacement and surface settlement induced by the excavation of the subway station should be strictly controlled. Many of such problems are affected by selected excavation method. For these reasons, different underground excavation methods associated with construction have been studied. In this study, sequential excavation method and large-diameter curved pipe roofng method are used and the numerical results of the two methods are compared. The presence of groundwater table obliges us to choose special techniques for the stability of the ground around the subway station during construction; hence compressed air and ground freezing techniques are utilized in the simulations of the subway station. Finally, after choosing appropriate support systems, the large-diameter curved pipe roofng method with 1.5 m spacing between curved pipes is proposed. 展开更多

This study proposes a deep learning-based approach for shaft resistance evaluation of cast-in-site piles on reclaimed ground, independent of theoretical hypotheses and engineering experience.A series of field tests was first performed to investigate the characteristics of the shaft resistance of cast-in-site piles on reclaimed ground. Then,an intelligent approach based on the long short term memory deep-learning technique was proposed to calculate the shaft resistance of the cast-in-site pile. The proposed method allows accurate estimation of the shaft resistance of cast-in-site piles, not only under the ultimate load but also under the working load.Comparisons with empirical methods confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed method for the shaft resistance estimation of cast-in-site piles on reclaimed ground in offshore areas. 展开更多

Three characteristic points in the deformation history of a fractured tensile specimen are selected tocalculate two values of n( n1 and n2 ) to represent the hardening ability of material during the homogeneous plas-tic deformation and the following large plastic deformation. Experimental results obtained with mild streel andred copper show that n determined using the three-point method proposed is better to describe the hardening a-bility of material. An element-free Galerkin method(EFGM) is used to solve the two-dimensional(2D) ground penetrating radar(GPR)modelling problems, due to its simple pre-processing, the absence of elements and high accuracy. Different from element-based numerical methods, this approach makes nodes free from the elemental restraint and avoids the explicit mesh discretization. First, we derived the boundary value problem for the 2D GPR simulation problems. Second, a penalty function approach and a boundary condition truncated method were used to enforce the essential and the absorbing boundary conditions, respectively. A three-layered GPR model was used to verify our element-free approach. The numerical solutions show that our solutions have an excellent agreement with solutions of a finite element method(FEM). Then, we used the EFGM to simulate one more complex model to show its capability and limitations. Simulation results show that one obvious advantage of EFGM is the absence of element mesh, which makes the method very flexible. Due to the use of MLS fitting, a key feature of EFM, is that both the dependent variable and its gradient are continuous and have high precision. 展开更多

We present a perturbation study of the ground-state energy of the beryllium atom by incorporating double parameters in the atom's Hamiltonian. The eigenvalue of the Hamiltonian is then solved with a double-fold perturbation scheme, where the spin-spin interaction of electrons from different shells of the atom is also considered. Calculations show that the obtained ground-state energy is in satisfactory agreement with experiment. It is found that the Coulomb repulsion of the inner-shell electrons enhances the effective nuclear charge seen by the outer-shell electrons, and the shielding effect of the outer-shell electrons to the nucleus is also notable compared with that of the inner-shell electrons. 展开更多

The ground effect is included by image method. The present method is validated by comparing the simulated wake roll-up shapes to published numerical results. When a wing is flying in a very close proximity to the ground, the optimal wing loading is parabolic rather than elliptic. Thus, a theoretical model of wing load distributions is suggested, and unsteady vortex evolutions behind lifting lines with both elliptic and parabolic load distributions are simulated for several ground heights. For a lifting line with elliptic and parabolic loading, the ground has the effect of moving the wingtip vortices laterally outward and suppressing the development of the vortex. When the wing is in a very close proximity to the ground, the types of wing load distributions does not affect much on the overall wake shapes, but parabolic load distributions make the wingtip vortices move more laterally outward than the elliptic load distributions. 展开更多
