With the presence of wind waves, the swaying of survey vessel may effect the quality of sub-bottom profiler records and, therefore, it is necessary to correct the distortions induced by wave action. A major issue is to distinguish wind wave effect and real bedforms such as sand waves. In this paper, a bandstop filter is designed according to the frequency features of wind wave effect to treat the distortion of seabed topography by wind waves. The technique is used to correct the sub-bottom profile in order to eliminate the wave-induced distortions for the sub-bottom profile records from the Yangtze Estuary. This study shows that the undulate seabed record is resulted from wave action, rather than the presence of sand waves, and the filtration technique helps to eliminate the wave effect and recover the real morphology of seabed and the sediment sequence underneath. In addition, a method for data processing is proposed for the case that the record indeed represents a combination of wave effects and real bedforms. 展开更多

A three-dimensional variational method is proposed to simultaneously retrieve the 3-D atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles from satellite radiance measurements. To include both vertical structure and the horizontal patterns of the atmospheric temperature and moisture, an EOF technique is used to decompose the temperature and moisture field in a 3-D space. A number of numerical simulations are conducted and they demonstrate that the 3-D method is less sensitive to the observation errors compared to the 1-D method. When the observation error is more than 2.0 K, to get the best results, the truncation number for the EOF's expansion have to be restricted to 2 in the 1-D method, while it can be set as large as 40 in a 3-D method. This results in the truncation error being reduced and the retrieval accuracy being improved in the 3-D method. Compared to the 1-D method, the rms errors of the 3-D method are reduced by 48% and 36% for the temperature and moisture retrievals, respectively. Using the real satellite measured brightness temperatures at 0557 UTC 31 July 2002, the temperature and moisture profiles are retrieved over a region (20°-45°N, 100°- 125°E) and compared with 37 collocated radiosonde observations. The results show that the retrieval accuracy with a 3-D method is significantly higher than those with the 1-D method. 展开更多

Determining the upper boundary of the cobalt-rich crust distribution of a guyot is important for estimating the mineral resources available, however, it has also long been an unsolved question. Correlations between the sub-bottom structures, revealed by sub-bottom profiling, and crust distribution can be revealed for the first time by the synchronous application of sub-bottom profiling and deep-sea video recording. The lower boundary of the sediment corresponds with the upper boundary of the crust. By analysis of these two kinds of data, the lower boundary of the sediment can be determined; therefore, the upper boundary of the crust distribution can be deduced. According to this method of analysis, the upper boundary of water depth of crust distribution of a seamount in the western Pacific is about 1 560 m. 展开更多

In this study,a 2kHz Tonpilz projector was designed using a Terfenol-D and modeled in ATILA.For the purpose of modeling studies,it has been determined that a radiating head mass exhibits better transmitting current response(TCR) at 136 mm diameter, where the resonance occurs at 2.4kHz and the peak value of 118 dB re 1 μPa/A at 1 m occurs at 12 kHz.Also bolt at a 46mm distance from the center of the head mass offers resonance at 2.4kHz,and the peak value of 115.3 dB re 1 μPa/A at 1m occurs at 11.5kHz.This optimized design is fabricated and molded with polyurethane of 3mm thickness. The prototype was tested at the Acoustic Test Facility(ATF) of National Institute of Ocean Technology(NIOT) for its underwater performances.Based on the result, the fundamental resonance was determined to be 2.18kHz and the peak value of TCR of 182 dB re 1 μPa/A at 1m occurs at 14 kHz.The maximum value of the RS was found to be -190 dB re 1V/μPa at 1m at a frequency of 2.1kHz. 展开更多

Three-dimensional(3D)profile scanning plays a crucial role in the inspection of assembled large aircraft. In this paper,to achieve noncontact automatic measurements of the high-reflective profiles of large-scale curved parts and components,an automated noncontact system and method with high accuracy and high efficiency are presented.First,a hybrid 3D coordinate measurement system based on proximity sensors and cameras is proposed to obtain noncontact measurements while avoiding the influence of high reflection on the measurement accuracy.A hybrid measurement model that combines the one-dimensional distances measured by the proximity sensors and the 3D information obtained by cameras is proposed to determine high-accuracy 3D coordinates of the measured points. Then,a profile-driven 3D automated scanning method and strategy are designed to rapidly scan and reconstruct the profile within the effective range without scratching the profile or exceeding the measurement range of the proposed system. Finally, experiments and accuracy analyses are performed in situ on an assembled tailplane panel(approximately 1760 mm×460 mm).The automated scanning process is completed in a timeframe of 208s with an average error of less than 0.121 mm for profile reconstruction. Therefore, the proposed method is promising considering both the high accuracy and high efficiency requirements of profile inspections for large aircraft. 展开更多

The conventional re-entry guidance method considerably limits the maneuverability of hypersonic glide vehicles under pre-given angle-of-attack profiles. To address this issue, based on a previous three-dimensional(3D)profile guidance method,we propose a lateral-profile-first 3D profile optimization design strategy to solve the trajectory generation problem under complex conditions involving multiple constraints.Unlike the traditional method, which prioritizes the design of the longitudinal drag acceleration profiles, our method first converted the re-entry flight constraints into a lateral flight corridor, generated the initial lateral profile via parameterization, and solved the 3D profile using the coupling relationship between the longitudinal and lateral motions. The design of the 3D profile requires simultaneous consideration of waypoints,no-fly zones, and altitude profiles;hence,a new 3D profile optimization design model was constructed, and a customized sequential quadratic programming algorithm was employed to solve it.The advantages of the proposed method were demonstrated based on landing footprint results obtained using the lateral profile-first strategy. Finally, simulation results based on the common aero vehicle-high-performance model verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the strategy. 展开更多

Open pit mining operations generate significant spoil dumps that need to be characterised for stability to identify potentially unstable slopes. However, the current subjective practice for spoil characterisation often involves tedious and risky field work.To this end, this study demonstrated the use of periodically acquired unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV)-based images over a coal mine spoil dump in New South Wales,Australia.A granular approach that captures the variability of each truck offload pile on a dump was adopted through morphology-based segmentation and ensemble algorithm-based classification which consolidates predictions from multiple classifiers.Overall accuracy of over 90% in the material characterisation based on the classification framework was achieved. The two-dimensional classification outcome was then transformed into three-dimensional(3D)block models using a point-based interpolation approach for stability analysis. The factor of safety derived from the granular approach offered improved assessment of failure risk compared to the conventional approaches, which treat the entire dump as a uniform category. This rapid classification and assessment method proposed in this study will help reduce the uncertainty associated with the variability of spoil dumps in slope stability assessments, thereby enhancing the safety and efficiency of mining operations. 展开更多

Arc erosion morphologies of Ag/MeO(10) electrical contact materials after 50000 operations under direct current of 19 V and 20 A and resistive load conditions were investigated using scanning electron microscope(SEM) and a 3D optical profiler(3DOP). The results indicated that 3DOP could supply clearer and more detailed arc erosion morphology information. Arc erosion resistance of Ag/SnO_2(10) electrical contact material was the best and that of Ag/CuO(10) was the worst. Arc erosion morphology of Ag/MeO(10) electrical contact materials mainly included three different types. Arc erosion morphologies of Ag/ZnO(10) and Ag/SnO_2(10) electrical contact materials were mainly liquid splash and evaporation, and those of Ag/CuO(10) and Ag/CdO(10) were mainly material transfer from anode to cathode. Arc erosion morphology of Ag/SnO_2(6)In_2O_3(4) electrical contact materials included both liquid splash, evaporation and material transfer. In addition, the formation process and mechanism on arc erosion morphology of Ag/MeO(10) electrical contact materials were discussed. 展开更多

The Taiwan Shoal is the convex terrain in the southern Taiwan Strait, the largest strait in China. In 2006 and 2007, 21 samples and more than 200-km sub-bottom data as well as 80-km near shore side-scan sonar data were gotten, which gave an initial image of the boundaries of the Taiwan Shoal and revealed the internal structure of the sand waves in this area. The results showed that the major component of the sediment samples was sand, and sand waves occurred everywhere in this area, which closely followed the range of the Taiwan Shoal as we know. The western boundary of the Taiwan Shoal thus reaches the 30 m isobaths near the shore, and as a result, its area potentially covers approximately 12 800-14 770 km2. The sand waves have different shapes under the complex ocean dynamics, and the height of sand waves in the near shore is usually smaller than that in the Taiwan Shoal. The number of sand waves ranged from 1-5 per kilometer, with more waves in the isobath-intensive area, suggesting the importance of topography for the formation of sand waves. The stratigraphic structure under the seabed has parallel bedding or cross bedding, and large dipping groove bedding can be seen locally in different parts, which may be the result of terrestrial deposition since the Late Pleistocene. 展开更多

Due to the strong penetrability,long-wavelength synthetic aperture radar(SAR)can provide an opportunity to reconstruct the three-dimensional structure of the penetrable media.SAR tomography(TomoSAR)technology can resynthesize aperture perpendicular to the slant-range direction and then obtain the tomographic profile consisting of power distribution of different heights, providing a powerful technical tool for reconstructing the three-dimensional structure of the penetrable ground objects. As an emerging technology,it is different from the traditional interferometric SAR(InSAR)technology and has advantages in reconstructing the three-dimensional structure of the illuminated media.Over the past two decades, many TomoSAR methods have been proposed to improve the vertical resolution, aiming to distinguish the locations of different scatters in the unit pixel. In order to cope with the forest mission of European Space Agency(ESA)that is designed to provide P-band SAR measurements to determine the amount of biomass and carbon stored in forests,it is necessary to systematically evaluate the performance of forest height and underlying topography inversion using TomoSAR technology. In this paper,we adopt three typical algorithms, namely,Capon,Multiple Signal Classification(MUSIC),and Compressed Sensing(CS),to evaluate the performance in forest height and underlying topography inversion. The P-band airborne full-polarization(FP)SAR data of LopèNational Park in the AfriSAR campaign implemented by ESA in 2016 is adopted to verify the experiment.Furthermore,we explore the effects of different baseline designs and filter methods on the reconstruction of the tomographic profile. The results show that a better tomographic profile can be obtained by using Hamming window filter and Capon algorithm in uniform baseline distribution and a certain number of acquisitions.Compared with LiDAR results, the root-mean-square error(RMSE)of forest height and underlying topography obtained by Capon algorithm is 2.17 m and 1.58 m,which performs the best among the three algorithms. 展开更多

TM Field, located offshore Niger Delta in the Gulf of Guinea(Nigeria),has been evaluated for potential drilling hazards prior to the drilling of a proposed oil well. This is in a region where potential hazards that could inhibit successful drilling exercise have not been adequately studied. The study adopted the modern technique of offshore geohazard evaluation that relies mainly on suites of geophysical and shallow geological investigations which include ocean bathymetry using multi-beam echo sounder, sidescan sonar,sub-bottom profiler, magnetic, and 2D-high resolution seismic reflection surveys. The results were integrated to draw inferences about the risk potential of the field. From the bathymetric survey, water depths were found to range from 345 m to 650 m LAT,with seabed relief being 305 m.Water depth at the proposed well location was found to be approximately 450 m and the seabed was found to slope in the northwestern direction.Seafloor gradient was computed as 0.05 across the whole area. Two shallow sub-surface stratigraphic units, labelled A and B,were delineated.Unit A was directly beneath the seafloor and seemed to be composed mainly of clayey/silty sand. Its thickness ranged from 6 m to 70 m across the study area.Unit B appeared to be a layer of sand and its total thickness was not fully delineated.Observable kinks and displacements at the flanks of seabed undulations/depressions on subbottom profiler sections suggested that the depressions may be fault-controlled.On the map generated from the marine magnetic data,a magnetic fault was delineated and this appeared to be coincident with the shallower of the two buried faults on the cross-line seismic section cutting through the proposed well-head location.Interpreted seismic reflection data presented this fault as being inactive. Most of the faults mapped, especially the buried ones, appeared to be inactive except a few.Regions with mapped amplitude anomalies are to be avoided during rig-mobilization operations.Though engineering conditions are expected to vary vertically since layers occur as intercalation, significant lateral variation is not expected within uniform layers of bed.Risk of punch-through associated with clayey formation is expected to be low because the geologic layers are not uniformly and entirely clay. The proposed wellhead location was found to be free of potential hazard sources. 展开更多

The operational numerical weather prediction system established by the China Meteorological Administration(CMA),based on the Global/Regional Assimilation and Prediction System(GRAPES)model, adopts the classical semi-implicit semi-Lagrangian(SISL)time integration algorithm. This paper describes a major upgrade to the dynamical core of the CMA global forecast system(CMA-GFS),which was successfully incorporated into operation in 2020.In the upgrade, the classical SISL is further developed into a predictor–corrector scheme,a three-dimensional(3D)reference profile instead of the original isothermal reference profile is applied when implementing the semi-implicit algorithm, and a hybrid terrain-following vertical coordinate system is also applied. The new version of the dynamical core greatly improves the model performance, the time integration reaches second-order accuracy, the time step can be extended by 50%,and the efficiency is greatly improved(by approximately 30%).Atmospheric circulation simulation is systematically improved, and deviations in temperature, wind, and humidity are reduced. The new version of the dynamical core provides a solid foundation for further development of the entire operational system of the CMA. 展开更多
