The shear behavior of rock joints is important in solving practical problems of rock mechanics. Three group rock joints with different morphologies are made by cement mortar material and a series of CNL(constant normal loading) shear tests are performed. The influences of the applied normal stress and joint morphology to its shear strength are analyzed. According to the experimental results, the peak dilatancy angle of rock joint decreases with increasing normal stress, but increases with increasing roughness. The shear strength increases with the increasing normal stress and the roughness of rock joint. It is observed that the modes of failure of asperities are tensile, pure shear, or a combination of both. It is suggested that the three-dimensional roughness parameters and the tensile strength are the appropriate parameter for describing the shear strength criterion. A new peak shear criterion is proposed which can be used to predict peak shear strength of rock joints. All the used parameters can be easily obtained by performing tests. 展开更多

Runway surface roughness significantly influences aircraft vibrations during takeoff and landing, affecting both flight safety and pavement durability.Aircraft operate at high speeds and wide gear spans, making them sensitive to long-wavelength(15–120 m)and lateral irregularities, which are often overlooked in traditional roughness models. This study aims to construct a three-dimensional runway roughness modeling framework integrating"precise detection-spectrum analysis-spatial reconstruction"in response to this issue.Combining the elevation data of 37 runways(5 asphalt runways and 32 cement runways)measured by a vehicle-mounted laser profilometer and the BeiDou positioning system, the power spectrum analysis was carried out by the Burg method and the spectrum models of asphalt and cement runways were fitted respectively.Meanwhile,a new exponential lateral coherence function was proposed. Finally, the three-dimensional spatial model was reconstructed by using the transfer function and genetic algorithm. The results show that the error of the measured elevation data is less than 1 cm.The spectral characteristics of different pavement types are significantly different.Among them, the R^(2) of the asphalt runway fitted with the Sussman model is greater than 0.9.The cement runway needs to be characterized by a piecewise function to represent the spectral mutation. The fitting error of the new index's lateral coherence function has been reduced to 0.012.The reconstructed three-dimensional model is in good agreement with the theoretical value and the error does not exceed 0.18 mm^(2) m/c.Finally,a three-dimensional model of 0–20 m in the lateral direction and 3000 m in the longitudinal direction is generated, providing support for aircraft vibration simulation and pavement maintenance. 展开更多

Rock mass stability is significantly influenced by the heterogeneity of rock joint roughness and shear strength. While modern technology facilitates assessing roughness heterogeneity, evaluating shear strength heterogeneity remains challenging. To address this, this study first captures the morphology of large-scale(1000 mm × 1000 mm) slate and granite joints via 3D laser scanning.Analysis of these surfaces and corresponding push/pull tests on carved specimens revealed a potential correlation between the heterogeneity of roughness and shear strength.A comparative evaluation of five statistical metrics identified information entropy(Hs) as the most robust indicator for quantifying rock joint heterogeneity.Further analysis using Hsreveals that the heterogeneity is anisotropic and, critically, that shear strength heterogeneity is governed not only by roughness heterogeneity but is also significantly influenced by the mean roughness value, normal stress, and intact rock tensile strength.Consequently,a simple comparison of roughness Hsvalues is insufficient for reliably comparing shear strength heterogeneity. To overcome this limitation,a theoretical framework is developed to explicitly map fundamental roughness statistics(mean and heterogeneity) to shear strength heterogeneity. This framework culminates in a practical workflow that allows for the rapid,field-based assessment of shear strength heterogeneity using readily obtainable rock joint roughness data. 展开更多

According to the Mindlin plate theory and the first-order piston theory, this work obtains accurate closed-form eigensolutions for the flutter problem of three-dimensional(3D)rectangular laminated panels. The governing differential equations are derived by the Hamilton's variational principle, and then solved by the iterative Separation-of-Variable(i SOV)method, which are applicable to arbitrary combinations of homogeneous Boundary Conditions(BCs).However, only the simply-support,clamped and cantilever panels are considered in this work for the sake of clarity. With the closed-form eigensolutions, the flutter frequency, flutter mode and flutter boundary are presented, and the effect of shear deformation and aerodynamic damping on flutter frequencies is investigated.Besides, the relation between panel energy and the work of aerodynamic load is discussed. The numerical comparisons reveal the following.(A)The flutter eigenvalues obtained by the present method are accurate, validated by the Finite Element Method(FEM)and the Galerkin method.(B)When the span-chord ratio is larger than 3,simplifying a 3D panel to 2D(two-dimensional)panel is reasonable and the relative differences of the flutter points predicted by the two models are less than one percent.(C)The reciprocal relationship between the mechanical energy of the panel and the work done by aerodynamic load is verified by using the present flutter eigenvalues and modes, further indicating the high accuracy of the present solutions.(D)The coupling of shear deformation and aerodynamic damping prevents frequency coalescing. 展开更多

Subsurface fluid injections can disturb the effective stress regime by elevating pore pressure and potentially reactivate faults and fractures.Laboratory studies indicate that fracture rheology and permeability in such reactivation events are linked to the roughness of the fracture surfaces. In this study,we construct numerical models using discrete element method(DEM)to explore the influence of fracture surface roughness on the shear strength, slip stability, and permeability evolution during such slip events. For each simulation,a pair of analog rock coupons(three-dimensional bonded quartz particle analogs)representing a mated fracture is sheared under a velocity-stepping scheme. The roughness of the fracture is defined in terms of asperity height and asperity wavelength. Results show that(1)Samples with larger asperity heights(rougher),when sheared, exhibit a higher peak strength which quickly devolves to a residual strength after reaching a threshold shear displacement;(2)These rougher samples also exhibit greater slip stability due to a high degree of asperity wear and resultant production of wear products;(3)Long-term suppression of permeability is observed with rougher fractures, possibly due to the removal of asperities and redistribution of wear products, which locally reduces porosity in the dilating fracture;and(4)Increasing shear-parallel asperity wavelength reduces magnitudes of stress drops after peak strength and enhances fracture permeability, while increasing shear-perpendicular asperity wavelength results in sequential stress drops and a delay in permeability enhancement. This study provides insights into understanding of the mechanisms of frictional and rheological evolution of rough fractures anticipated during reactivation events. 展开更多

To solve the problem of the lack of comprehensive evaluation of three-dimensional(3D)asphalt pavement roughness,a method for evaluating the asphalt pavement roughness is proposed based on two-dimensional(2D)power spectral density(PSD).By calculating the 2D PSD of a 3D asphalt pavement and converting it into the longitudinal average asphalt pavement PSD,the relationship between the evaluation method of the 3D asphalt pavement roughness and the current evaluation standard of roughness is established.Combined with the road-fitting formula used in international standards, the elevation data of the A,B,C,and D grades of the 3D asphalt pavement are simulated by the harmonic superposition method.According to the proposed method, the longitudinal PSD of each level of simulated asphalt pavement is calculated and compared with the standard spectral line of each pavement level. This approach verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method in evaluating the roughness of the 3D asphalt pavement.Compared with the PSD of a certain horizontal profile elevation,it is verified that the fluctuation amplitude of the spectral line calculated by the proposed method is greatly improved. The results show that the proposed method can evaluate the roughness of asphalt pavements more comprehensively and accurately and has strong practicability. 展开更多

Owing to the complexity of droughts, detailed assessments of drought events have become a key issue in water resource management and planning. In this study,three-dimensional copula models at Standard Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index(SPEI)-1,SPEI-3,SPEI-6,and SPEI-12 were used to assess drought risks in the Haihe River Basin(HRB)of China from 1961–2020.Drought duration, severity, and peak,as indicated by SPEI,were extracted based on run theory and fitted with suitable marginal distributions. The difference between the joint return period(Tor)and the co-occurrence return period(Tand)could explain the intrinsic correlation between drought characteristics. The smaller the difference, the stronger the correlation. The results showed that droughts in the north-western region of the HRB were characterized by high peak, intense severity, and long duration. In contrast, the eastern region exhibited a higher frequency of drought occurrence.Furthermore, the decreasing trend in precipitation dominated droughts, and topography of the northwest region creates the features of low annual precipitation with more days of precipitation. The drought events in the HRB were influenced by the phase shift between El Niño and La Niña.There was a strong negative phase coupling between SPEI-12 and Niño3.4(R^(2)≥0.77).The transition from La Niña to El Niño was responsible for severe droughts in the HRB.The El Niño-Southern Oscillation could predict droughts with lag times of 0.15–4.35 mon in mountainous areas. 展开更多

Three-dimensional(3D)roughness of discontinuity affects the quality of the rock mass, but 3D roughness is hard to be measured due to that the discontinuity is invisible in the engineering.Two-dimensional(2D)roughness can be calculated from the visible traces, but it is difficult to obtain enough quantity of the traces to directly derive 3D roughness during the tunnel excavation. In this study,a new method using Bayesian theory is proposed to derive 3D roughness from the low quantity of 2D roughness samples. For more accurately calculating 3D roughness,a new regression formula of 2D roughness is established firstly based on wavelet analysis. The new JRC3D prediction model based on Bayesian theory is then developed, and Markov chain Monte Carlo(MCMC)sampling is adopted to process JRC3D prediction model. The discontinuity sample collected from the literature is used to verify the proposed method.Twenty groups with the sampling size of 2,3,4,and 5 of each group are randomly sampled from JRC2D values of 170 profiles of the discontinuity, respectively. The research results indicate that 100%,90%,85%,and 60%predicting JRC3D of the sample groups corresponding to the sampling size of 5,4,3,and 2 fall into the tolerance interval[JRC_(true)–1,JRC_(true)+1].It is validated that the sampling size of 5 is enough for predicting JRC3D.The sensitivities of sampling results are then analyzed on the influencing factors, which are the correlation function, the prior distribution, and the prior information. The discontinuity across the excavation face at ZK78+67.5 of Daxiagu tunnel is taken as the tunnel engineering application, and the results further verify that the predicting JRC3D with the sampling size of 5 is generally in good agreement with JRC3D true values. 展开更多

Morphology of hydraulic fracture surface has significant effects on oil and gas flow, proppant migration and fracture closure, which plays an important role in oil and gas fracturing stimulation. In this paper,we analyzed the fracture surface characteristics induced by supercritical carbon dioxide(SC-CO_(2))and water in open-hole and perforation completion conditions under triaxial stresses.A simple calculation method was proposed to quantitatively analyze the fracture surface area and roughness in macro-level based on three-dimensional(3D)scanning data.In micro-level,scanning electron micrograph(SEM)was used to analyze the features of fracture surface. The results showed that the surface area of the induced fracture increases with perforation angle for both SC-CO_(2)and water fracturing, and the surface area of SC-CO_(2)-induced fracture is 6.49%e58.57%larger than that of water-induced fracture. The fractal dimension and surface roughness of water-induced fractures increase with the increase in perforation angle, while those of SC-CO_(2)-induced fractures decrease with the increasing perforation angle.A considerable number of microcracks and particle peeling pits can be observed on SC-CO_(2)-induced fracture surface while there are more flat particle surfaces in water-induced fracture surface through SEM images, indicating that fractures tend to propagate along the boundary of the particle for SC-CO_(2)fracturing while water-induced fractures prefer to cut through particles. These findings are of great significance for analyzing fracture mechanism and evaluating fracturing stimulation performance. 展开更多

Joint roughness coefficient(JRC)is the most commonly used parameter for quantifying surface roughness of rock discontinuities in practice. The system composed of multiple roughness statistical parameters to measure JRC is a nonlinear system with a lot of overlapping information. In this paper,a dataset of eight roughness statistical parameters covering 112 digital joints is established. Then, the principal component analysis method is introduced to extract the significant information, which solves the information overlap problem of roughness characterization.Based on the two principal components of extracted features, the white shark optimizer algorithm was introduced to optimize the extreme gradient boosting model, and a new machine learning(ML)prediction model was established. The prediction accuracy of the new model and the other 17 models was measured using statistical metrics. The results show that the prediction result of the new model is more consistent with the real JRC value, with higher recognition accuracy and generalization ability. 展开更多

To address the problem of multi-missile cooperative interception against maneuvering targets at a prespecified impact time and desired Line-of-Sight(LOS)angles in ThreeDimensional(3D)space,this paper proposes a 3D leader-following cooperative interception guidance law.First,in the LOS direction of the leader,an impact time-controlled guidance law is derived based on the fixed-time stability theory, which enables the leader to complete the interception task at a prespecified impact time.Next,in the LOS direction of the followers,by introducing a time consensus tracking error function,a fixed-time consensus tracking guidance law is investigated to guarantee the consensus tracking convergence of the time-to-go.Then,in the direction normal to the LOS,by combining the designed global integral sliding mode surface and the second-order Sliding Mode Control(SMC)theory,an innovative 3D LOS-angle-constrained interception guidance law is developed, which eliminates the reaching phase in the traditional sliding mode guidance laws and effectively saves energy consumption. Moreover,it effectively suppresses the chattering phenomenon while avoiding the singularity issue, and compensates for unknown interference caused by target maneuvering online, making it convenient for practical engineering applications. Finally, theoretical proof analysis and multiple sets of numerical simulation results verify the effectiveness, superiority, and robustness of the investigated guidance law. 展开更多

Three-dimensional(3D)urban structures play a critical role in informing climate mitigation strategies aimed at the built environment and facilitating sustainable urban development.Regrettably, there exists a significant gap in detailed and consistent data on 3D building space structures with global coverage due to the challenges inherent in the data collection and model calibration processes. In this study,we constructed a global urban structure(GUS-3D)dataset,including building volume, height, and footprint information,at a 500 m spatial resolution using extensive satellite observation products and numerous reference building samples. Our analysis indicated that the total volume of buildings worldwide in2015 exceeded 1×10^(12)m^(3).Over the 1985 to 2015 period,we observed a slight increase in the magnitude of 3D building volume growth(i.e.,it increased from 166.02 km3 during the 1985–2000 period to 175.08km3 during the 2000–2015 period),while the expansion magnitudes of the two-dimensional(2D)building footprint(22.51×10^(3) vs 13.29×10^(3)km^(2))and urban extent(157×10^(3) vs 133.8×10^(3)km^(2))notably decreased. This trend highlights the significant increase in intensive vertical utilization of urban land.Furthermore,we identified significant heterogeneity in building space provision and inequality across cities worldwide. This inequality is particularly pronounced in many populous Asian cities, which has been overlooked in previous studies on economic inequality. The GUS-3D dataset shows great potential to deepen our understanding of the urban environment and creates new horizons for numerous 3D urban studies. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Inguinal hernias are common after surgery.Tension-free repair is widely accepted as the main method for managing inguinal hernias.Adequate exposure, coverage, and repair of the myopectineal orifice(MPO)are necessary. However, due to differences in race and sex, people’s body shapes vary.According to European guidelines, the patch should measure 10 cm×15 cm.If any part of the MPO is dissected, injury to the nerves, vascular network,or organs may occur during surgery, thereby leading to inguinal discomfort, pain, and seroma formation after surgery. Therefore, accurate localization and measurement of the boundary of the MPO are crucial for selecting the optimal patch for inguinal hernia repair.AIM To compare the size of the MPO measured on three-dimensional multislice spiral computed tomography(CT)with that measured via laparoscopy and explore the relevant factors influencing the size of the MPO.METHODS Clinical data from 74 patients who underwent laparoscopic tension-free inguinal hernia repair at the General Surgery Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui University of Science and Technology between September 2022 and July 2024 were collected and analyzed retrospectively.Transabdominal preperitoneal was performed.Sixty-four males and 10 females, with an average age of 58.30±12.32 years, were included. The clinical data of the patients were collected. The boundary of the MPO was measured on three-dimensional CT images before surgery and then again during transabdominal preperitoneal. All the preoperative and intraoperative data were analyzed via paired t-tests.A t-test was used for comparisons of age, body mass index, and sex between the groups. In the comparative analysis,a P value less than 0.05 indicated a significant difference.RESULTS The boundaries of the MPO on 3-dimensional CT images measured 7.05±0.47 cm and 6.27±0.61 cm,and the area of the MPO was 19.54±3.33 cm^(2).The boundaries of the MPO during surgery were 7.18±0.51 cm and 6.17±0.40 cm.The errors were not statistically significant. However, the intraoperative BD(the width of the MPO,P=0.024,P<0.05)and preoperative AC(the length of the MPO,P=0.045,P<0.05)significantly differed according to sex.The AC and BD measurements before and during surgery were not significantly different according to age, body mass index, hernia side or hernia type(P>0.05).CONCLUSION The application of this technology can aid in determining the most appropriate dissection range and patch size. 展开更多

The roughness of the fracture surface directly affects the strength, deformation, and permeability of the surrounding rock in deep underground engineering.Understanding the effect of high temperature and thermal cycle on the fracture surface roughness plays an important role in estimating the damage degree and stability of deep rock mass.In this paper, the variations of fracture surface roughness of granite after different heating and thermal cycles were investigated using the joint roughness coefficient method(JRC),three-dimensional(3D)roughness parameters, and fractal dimension(D),and the mechanism of damage and deterioration of granite were revealed. The experimental results show an increase in the roughness of the granite fracture surface as temperature and cycle number were incremented. The variations of JRC,height parameter, inclination parameter and area parameter with the temperature conformed to the Boltzmann's functional distribution, while the D decreased linearly as the temperature increased.Besides, the anisotropy index(Ip)of the granite fracture surface increased as the temperature increased, and the larger parameter values of roughness characterization at different temperatures were attained mainly in directions of 20°–40°,60°–100°and 140°–160°.The fracture aperture of granite after fracture followed the Gauss distribution and the average aperture increased with increasing temperature, which increased from 0.665 mm at 25℃to 1.058 mm at 800℃.High temperature caused an uneven thermal expansion, water evaporation, and oxidation of minerals within the granite, which promoted the growth and expansion of microfractures, and reduced interparticle bonding strength. In particular, the damage was exacerbated by the expansion and cracking of the quartz phase transition after T>500℃.Thermal cycles contributed to the accumulation of this damage and further weakened the interparticle bonding forces, resulting in a significant increase in the roughness, anisotropy, and aperture of the fracture surface after five cycles. 展开更多

Through-silicon-via (TSV) to TSV crosstalk noise is one of the key factors affecting the signal integrity of three- dimensional integrated circuits (3D ICs). Based on the frequency dependent equivalent electrical parameters for the TSV channel, an analytical crosstalk noise model is established to capture the TSV induced crosstalk noise. The impact of various design parameters including insulation dielectric, via pitch, via height, silicon conductivity, and terminal impedance on the crosstalk noise is analyzed with the proposed model. Two approaches are proposed to alleviate the TSV noise, namely, driver sizing and via shielding, and the SPICE results show 241 rnV and 379 mV reductions in the peak noise voltage, respectively. 展开更多

Structure plane is one of the important factors affecting the stability and failure mode of rock mass engineering.Rock mass structure characterization is the basic work of rock mechanics research and the important content of numerical simulation.A new 3-dimensional rough discrete fracture network(RDFN3D)model and its modeling method based on the Weierstrass-Mandelbrot(W-M)function were presented in this paper. The RDFN3D model, which improves and unifies the modelling methods for the complex structural planes, has been realized. The influence of fractal dimension, amplitude, and surface precision on the modeling parameters of RDFN3D was discussed. The reasonable W-M parameters suitable for the roughness coefficient of JRC were proposed, and the relationship between the mathematical model and the joint characterization was established. The RDFN3D together with the smooth 3-dimensional discrete fracture network(DFN3D)models were successfully exported to the drawing exchange format, which will provide a wide application in numerous numerical simulation codes including both the continuous and discontinuous methods. The numerical models were discussed using the COMSOL Multiphysics code and the 3-dimensional particle flow code, respectively. The reliability of the RDFN3D model was preliminarily discussed and analyzed. The roughness and spatial connectivity of the fracture networks have a dominant effect on the fluid flow patterns. The research results can provide a new geological model and analysis model for numerical simulation and engineering analysis of jointed rock mass. 展开更多

It is of great importance to obtain precise trace data,as traces are frequently the sole visible and measurable parameter in most outcrops. The manual recognition and detection of traces on high-resolution three-dimensional(3D)models are relatively straightforward but time-consuming.One potential solution to enhance this process is to use machine learning algorithms to detect the 3D traces. In this study,a unique pixel-wise texture mapper algorithm generates a dense point cloud representation of an outcrop with the precise resolution of the original textured 3D model.A virtual digital image rendering was then employed to capture virtual images of selected regions. This technique helps to overcome limitations caused by the surface morphology of the rock mass, such as restricted access, lighting conditions, and shading effects. After AI-powered trace detection on two-dimensional(2D)images,a 3D data structuring technique was applied to the selected trace pixels. In the 3D data structuring, the trace data were structured through 2D thinning,3D reprojection, clustering, segmentation, and segment linking. Finally, the linked segments were exported as 3D polylines, with each polyline in the output corresponding to a trace. The efficacy of the proposed method was assessed using a 3D model of a real-world case study, which was used to compare the results of artificial intelligence(AI)-aided and human intelligence trace detection.Rosette diagrams, which visualize the distribution of trace orientations, confirmed the high similarity between the automatically and manually generated trace maps.In conclusion, the proposed semi-automatic method was easy to use, fast, and accurate in detecting the dominant jointing system of the rock mass. 展开更多

Currently, there are a limited number of dynamic models available for braided composite plates with large overall motions, despite the incorporation of three-dimensional(3D)braided composites into rotating blade components. In this paper,a dynamic model of 3D 4-directional braided composite thin plates considering braiding directions is established.Based on Kirchhoff's plate assumptions, the displacement variables of the plate are expressed.By incorporating the braiding directions into the constitutive equation of the braided composites, the dynamic model of the plate considering braiding directions is obtained. The effects of the speeds, braiding directions, and braided angles on the responses of the plate with fixed-axis rotation and translational motion, respectively, are investigated. This paper presents a dynamic theory for calculating the deformation of 3D braided composite structures undergoing both translational and rotational motions. It also provides a simulation method for investigating the dynamic behavior of non-isotropic material plates in various applications. 展开更多

Liposarcoma is one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas, however, its occurrence rate is still rare compared to other cancers.Due to its rarity,in vitro experiments are an essential approach to elucidate liposarcoma pathobiology.Conventional cell culture-based research(2D cell culture)is still playing a pivotal role, while several shortcomings have been recently under discussion. In vivo, mouse models are usually adopted for pre-clinical analyses with expectations to overcome the issues of 2D cell culture. However, they do not fully recapitulate human dedifferentiated liposarcoma(DDLPS)characteristics.Therefore,three-dimensional(3D)culture systems have been the recent research focus in the cell biology field with the expectation to overcome at the same time the disadvantages of 2D cell culture and in vivo animal models and fill in the gap between them.Given the liposarcoma rarity,we believe that 3D cell culture techniques, including 3D cell cultures/co-cultures,and Patient-Derived tumor Organoids(PDOs),represent a promising approach to facilitate liposarcoma investigation and elucidate its molecular mechanisms and effective therapy development. In this review,we first provide a general overview of 3D cell cultures compared to 2D cell cultures. We then focus on one of the recent 3D cell culture applications,Patient-Derived Organoids(PDOs),summarizing and discussing several PDO methodologies. Finally,we discuss the current and future applications of PDOs to sarcoma, particularly in the field of liposarcoma. 展开更多
