Diffractive optical neural networks(DONNs)have exhibited the advantages of parallelization,high speed,and low consumption.However,the existing DONNs based on free-space diffractive optical elements are bulky and unsteady.In this study,we propose a planar-waveguide integrated diffractive neural network chip architecture.The three diffractive layers are engraved on the same side of a quartz wafer.The three-layer chip is designed with 32-mm3 processing space and enables a computing speed of 3.1×109 Tera operations per second.The results show that the proposed chip achieves 73.4%experimental accuracy for the Modified National Institute of Standards and Technology database while showing the system’s robustness in a cycle test.The consistency of experiments is 88.6%,and the arithmetic mean standard deviation of the results is~4.7%.The proposed chip architecture can potentially revolutionize high-resolution optical processing tasks with high robustness. 展开更多

Integrating the magneto-optical effect into a waveguide-based photonic device becomes more and more interesting.In the work,the planar optical waveguide firstly was prepared in a terbium gallium garnet crystal(TGG)via the proton implantation with the energy of 4×10^(-1)MeV and the fluence of 6×10^(8)ions/μm^(2).Subsequently,a femtosecond laser with a central wavelength of 800 nm and a power of 3 mW was used to ablate the surface of the planar waveguide,forming the ridge optical waveguide.The dark-mode curve of the planar waveguide was measured by a prism coupling technique.The top-view morphology of the ridge waveguide was observed via a Nikon microscope.The mode field distributions of the planar and ridge waveguides were obtained by an end-face coupling system,and the propagation losses of the two waveguides were measured to be 2.26 dB/cm and 2.58 dB/cm,respectively.The Verdet constants were measured to be-72.7°/T·cm for the TGG substrate and-60.7°/T·cm for the ridge waveguide.The TGG waveguides have a potential in the fabrication of magneto-optical waveguide devices. 展开更多

We study a generalized higher-order nonlinear Schr¨odinger equation in an optical fiber or a planar waveguide.We obtain the Lax pair and N-fold Darboux transformation(DT)with N being a positive integer.Based on Lax pair obtained by us,we derive the infinitely-many conservation laws.We give the bright one-,two-,and N-soliton solutions,and the first-,second-,and Nth-order breather solutions based on the N-fold DT.We conclude that the velocities of the bright solitons are influenced by the distributed gain function,g(z),and variable coefficients in equation,h_(1)(z),p_(1)(z),r_(1)(z),and s_(1)(z)via the asymptotic analysis,where z represents the propagation variable or spatial coordinate.We also graphically observe that:the velocities of the first-and second-order breathers will be affected by h_(1)(z),p_(1)(z),r_(1)(z),and s_(1)(z),and the background wave depends on g(z). 展开更多

In this article, we study the impacts of nonlinearity and dispersion on signals likely to propagate in the context of the dynamics of four-wave mixing. Thus, we use an indirect resolution technique based on the use of the iB-function to first decouple the nonlinear partial differential equations that govern the propagation dynamics in this case, and subsequently solve them to propose some prototype solutions. These analytical solutions have been obtained;we check the impact of nonlinearity and dispersion. The interest of this work lies not only in the resolution of the partial differential equations that govern the dynamics of wave propagation in this case since these equations not at all easy to integrate analytically and their analytical solutions are very rare, in other words, we propose analytically the solutions of the nonlinear coupled partial differential equations which govern the dynamics of four-wave mixing in optical fibers. Distributed fiber gratings exhibit outstanding capabilities in achieving a wide spectral response through the superimposition of gratings with different periods in the fiber core.This significantly broadens the design flexibility and potential applications of fiber gratings.However,as photons pass through gratings with varying periods in sequence,which not only inevitably existing signal crosstalk but also poses challenges for integrating.In this study,a three-dimensional(3D)four-channel filter is proposed and realized in fiber-compatible materials using femtosecond laser writing.The filter consists of a 3D beam splitter and four parallel different-period Bragg waveguide gratings(WGs).By designing grating periods in each path,parallel filtering and reflection at multiple designed wavelengths are achieved compactly with 50 nm spectrum spacing within 1450-1600 nm wavelengths.The four-channel filter entire measures 15.5 mm×1 mm×1 mm(the highest integration of distributed fiber gratings reported so far).Our technique will augment the laser fabrication technology for 3D integrated photonic devices and serve as a powerful and generalized solution for highly integrated in-situ measurement and multi-parameter decoupled sensing. 展开更多

In the field of short-range optical interconnects,the development of low-power-consumption,ultrawideband on-chip optical waveguide amplifiers is of critical importance.Central to this advancement is the creation of host materials that require low pump power and provide ultrabroadband emission capabilities.We introduce a tri-doped lanthanum aluminate glass(composition:5Er_(2)O_(3)-5Yb_(2)O_(3)-0.2Tm_(2)O_(3)-43.8La_(2)O_(3)-46Al_(2)O_(3)),which exhibits exceptional near-infrared(NIR)luminescence intensity,significantly outperforming other bands by 3 orders of magnitude.This glass can achieve an ultrawideband NIR gain spanning 478 nm,from 1510 to 1988 nm.Notably,the glass achieves positive optical gain with a low population inversion threshold(P>0.2),highlighting its efficiency and low-power consumption.The high glass transition temperature(Tg∼842°C)and large temperature difference(ΔT∼120°C)between Tg and the onset of crystallization(Tx)indicate excellent thermal stability,which is crucial for producing high-quality amorphous films for on-chip amplifiers.This research examines the unique energy levels and spectral properties of the Er^(3+)-Yb^(3+)-Tm^(3+) tri-doped glass,assessing its potential for use in ultrawideband on-chip optical waveguide amplifiers.This work lays the groundwork for low-power,ultrabroadband on-chip waveguide amplifiers,offering new avenues for short-range optical interconnect systems. 展开更多

Based on attenuated total reflection (ATR) and thermo-optic effect, the polymeric thin film planar optical waveguide is used as the temperature sensor, and the factors influencing the sensitivity of the temperature sensor are comprehensively analyzed. Combined with theoretical analysis and experimental investigation, the sensitivity of the temperature sensor is related to the thicknesses of the upper cladding layer, the waveguide layer, the optical loss of the polymer material and the guided wave modes. The results show that the slope value about reflectivity and temperature, which stands for the sensitivity of the polymer thin film temperature sensor, is associated with the waveguide film thickness and the guided wave modes, and the slope value is the highest in the zero reflectance of a certain transverse electric (TE) mode. To improve the sensitivity of the temperature sensor, the sensor's working incident light exterior angle α should be chosen under a certain TE mode with the reflectivity to be zero. This temperature sensor is characterized by high sensitivity and simple structure and it is easily fabricated. 展开更多

A 1550-1600nm lossless operation with a high DC extinction ratio of 25dB and more than 10GHz 3dB bandwidth are successfully achieved. This study involved a comprehensive investigation aimed at achieving efficient multi-millijoule THz wave generation by exploiting the unique properties of cylindrical GaAs waveguides as effective mediators of the conversion of laser energy into THz waves.Through meticulous investigation,valuable insights into optimizing THz generation processes for practical applications were unearthed.By investigating Hertz potentials,an eigen-value equation for the solutions of the guided modes(i.e.,eigenvalues)was found.The effects of various param-eters,including the effective mode index and the laser pulse power,on the electric field components of THz radia-tion,including the fundamental TE(transverse electric)and TM(transverse magnetic)modes,were evaluated.By analyzing these factors,this research elucidated the nuanced mechanisms governing THz wave generation within cylindrical GaAs waveguides,paving the way for refined methodologies and enhanced efficiency.The sig-nificance of cylindrical GaAs waveguides extends beyond their roles as mere facilitators of THz generation;their design and fabrication hold the key to unlocking the potential for compact and portable THz systems.This trans-formative capability not only amplifies the efficiency of THz generation but also broadens the horizons of practical applications. 展开更多

Research on supercontinuum sources on silicon has made significant progress in the past few decades.However,conventional approaches to broaden the spectral bandwidth often rely on complex and critical dispersion engineering by optimizing the core thickness or introducing the cladding with special materials and structures.We propose and demonstrate supercontinuum generation using long-periodgrating(LPG)waveguides on silicon with a C-band pump.The LPG waveguide is introduced for quasi-phase matching,and the generated supercontinuum spectrum is improved greatly with grating-induced dispersive waves.In addition,the demonstrated LPG waveguide shows a low propagation loss comparable with regular silicon photonic waveguides without gratings.In experiments,when using a 1550-nm 75-fs pulse pump with a pulse energy of 200 pJ,the supercontinuum spectrum generated with the present LPG waveguide shows an ultrabroad extent from 1150 to 2300 nm,which is much wider by 200 nm than that achieved by dispersionengineered uniform silicon photonic waveguides on the same chip.This provides a promising option for on-chip broadband light source for silicon photonic systems. 展开更多

Silicon nitride(Si_(3)N_(4))photonic platform has recently attracted increasing attention for Si_(3)N_(4) photonic integrated circuits(PIC).A diffraction grating with the only etched top-layer in tri-layer Si3N4 optical waveguides is proposed,which shows a simple fabrication process,high upward diffraction efficiency,and lower far-field divergence angle.The measured results of the diffraction grating at a wavelength of 905 nm show the average upward diffraction efficiency of 90.5% and average far-field divergence angle of 0.154°,which shows a good agreement with the design results with the upward diffraction efficiency of 91.6%and far-field divergence angle of 0.105°. 展开更多

To enhance the quality factor and sensitivity of refractive index sensors,a feedback waveguide slot grating micro-ring resonator was proposed.An air-hole grating structure was introduced based on the slot micro-ring,utilizing the reflection of the grating to achieve the electromagnetic-like induced transparency effect at different wavelengths.The high slope characteristics of the EIT-like effect enabled a higher quality factor and sensitivity.The transmission principle of the structure was analyzed using the transmission matrix method,and the transmission spectrum and mode field distribution were simulated using the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD)method,and the device structure parameters were adjusted for optimization.Simulation results show that the proposed structure achieves an EIT-like effect with a quality factor of 59267.5.In the analysis of refractive index sensing characteristics,the structure exhibits a sensitivity of 408.57 nm/RIU and a detection limit of 6.23×10^(-5) RIU.Therefore,the proposed structure achieved both a high quality factor and refractive index sensitivity,demonstrating excellent sensing performance for applications in environmental monitoring,biomedical fields,and other areas with broad market potential. 展开更多

In this study,we design and numerically investigate a novel all optical D flip-flop(AODFF)based on linear photonic crystal(LPhC)structure that is composed of optical waveguides using the finite difference time domain(FDTD)method.The proposed structure has the hexagonal close packed of 16×20 circular rods that are suspended in the air substrate with a lattice constant of 606 nm.The plane wave expansion(PWE)method is used to obtain the band diagram for AODFF at an operating wavelength of 1550 nm.The proposed optical flip-flop achieves a low delay time of 0.2 ps and a high contrast ratio(CR)of 10.33 dB.The main advantage of this design is that the input power as low as 1 mW/μm^(2) is sufficient for its operation,since no nonlinear rods are included.In addition,the footprint of the proposed AODFF is 100μm^(2),which is smaller compared to the structures reported in the literature,and it has a fast switching frequency of 5 Tbit/s. 展开更多

We theoretically investigate the extended Bose-Hubbard model using a three-dimensional cubic lattice.In the framework of the dynamical Gutzwiller mean-field theory,we identify a checkerboard supersolid phase.By considering the repulsive interactions between next-nearest-neighbor lattice sites,we further discover an exotic type of supersolid state,whose site occupancies show a stereoscopically arrayed and staggered distribution rather than checkerboard ordering.Intriguingly,if the physical observations of two neighboring layers were superimposed,they would give rise to a checkerboard configuration.This novel structure is convincingly induced by the simultaneous existence of nearest-neighbor and nextnearest-neighbor interactions.We also identify arrayed stripes in the ground state,as well as arrayed holes in the pattern of occupancies. 展开更多

This paper presents the development of a bioinspired multifunctional flexible optical sensor(BioMFOS)as an ultrasensitive tool for force(intensity and location)and orientation sensing.The sensor structure is bioinspired in orb webs,which are multifunctional devices for prey capturing and vibration transmission.The multifunctional feature of the structure is achieved by using transparent resins that present both mechanical and optical properties for structural integrity and strain/deflection transmission as well as the optical signal transmission properties with core/cladding configuration of a waveguide.In this case,photocurable and polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS)resins are used for the core and cladding,respectively.The optical transmission,tensile tests,and dynamic mechanical analysis are performed in the resins and show the possibility of light transmission at the visible wavelength range in conjunction with high flexibility and a dynamic range up to 150 Hz,suitable for wearable applications.The BioMFOS has small dimensions(around 2 cm)and lightweight(0.8 g),making it suitable for wearable application and clothing integration.Characterization tests are performed in the structure by means of applying forces at different locations of the structure.The results show an ultra-high sensitivity and resolution,where forces in theμN range can be detected and the location of the applied force can also be detected with a sub-millimeter spatial resolution.Then,the BioMFOS is tested on the orientation detection in 3D plane,where a correlation coefficient higher than 0.9 is obtained when compared with a gold-standard inertial measurement unit(IMU).Furthermore,the device also shows its capabilities on the movement analysis and classification in two protocols:finger position detection(with the BioMFOS positioned on the top of the hand)and trunk orientation assessment(with the sensor integrated on the clothing).In both cases,the sensor is able of classifying the movement,especially when analyzed in conjunction with preprocessing and clustering techniques.As another wearable application,the respiratory rate is successfully estimated with the BioMFOS integrated into the clothing.Thus,the proposed multifunctional device opens new avenues for novel bioinspired photonic devices and can be used in many applications of biomedical,biomechanics,and micro/nanotechnology. 展开更多

Optical waveguides are far more than mere connecting elements in integrated optical systems and circuits.Benefiting from their high optical confinement and miniaturized footprints,waveguide structures established based on crystalline materials,particularly,are opening exciting possibilities and opportunities in photonic chips by facilitating their on-chip integration with different functionalities and highly compact photonic circuits.Femtosecond-laser-direct writing(FsLDW),as a true three-dimensional(3D)micromachining and microfabrication technology,allows rapid prototyping of on-demand waveguide geometries inside transparent materials via localized material modification.The success of FsLDW lies not only in its unsurpassed aptitude for realizing 3D devices but also in its remarkable material-independence that enables cross-platform solutions.This review emphasizes FsLDW fabrication of waveguide structures with 3D layouts in dielectric crystals.Their functionalities as passive and active photonic devices are also demonstrated and discussed. 展开更多

By adjusting the waveguide length ratio, we study the extraordinary characteristics of electromagnetic waves propagating in one-dimensional(1D) parity-time-symmetric(PT-symmetric) two-segment-connected triangular optical waveguide networks with perfect and broken integer waveguide length ratios respectively. It is found that the number and the corresponding frequencies of the extremum spontaneous PT-symmetric breaking points are dependent on the waveguide length ratio. Near the extremum breaking points, ultrastrong extraordinary transmissions are created and the maximal can arrive at, respectively, 2.4079 × 10^14 and 4.3555 × 10^13 in both kinds of networks. However, bidirectional invisibility can only be produced by the networks with broken integer waveguide length ratio, whose mechanism is explained in detail from the perspective of photonic band structure. The findings of this work can be useful optical characteristic control in the fabrication of PT-symmetric optical waveguide networks, which possesses great potential in designing optical amplifiers,optical energy saver devices, and special optical filters. 展开更多
