The transient thermal stresses of the inert anode under complex boundary condition during high-temp (955℃) electrolysis were calculated using the finite-element software ANSYS, the influence of different parameters on the distribution of the thermal stresses were analyzed. The results showed that, during the process of thermal shock, the thermal hoop tensile stress on the surface of the anode is very large, which is possibly the major cause of anode crack; when the radius of the anode is between 0.05-0.15m, a range that can be realized by recent manufacturing technology, the optimum composition distribution exponent p is 0.25; The hoop tensile stresses reduce with the decrease of anode scale and also decrease with the decrease of the convection coefficient between the electrolyte and the anode.展开更多

Using the complex function method, the present paper analyzed the dynamic thermal stress distribution in the surface of an arbitrary shaped cavity subjected to a steady temperature field. Actually, not only is a general solution of this problem represented by Hankle function obtained for an arbitrary shaped cavity, but also a process to calculate the coefficient of the dynamic thermal stress distribution in the surface of an arbitrary shaped cavity is derived. For illustration, some numerical results of a circular cavity, an elliptic cavity, a lining horseshoe cavity and a square cavity are given.展开更多

However, due to the metallurgical complexity of materials, it is rather difficult to obtain a closed-form solution of residual stresses within multilayered coatings (e.g. functionally graded coatings, FGCs). In this paper,an analytical model is developed to predict the distribution of residual stresses within multilayered coatings. The advantage of this model is that the solution of residual stresses is independent of the number of layers. Specific results are obtained by calculating elastic thermal stresses in ZrO2/NiCoCrAIY FGCs, which consist of different material layers. Furthermore, the residual stress distribution near the edges and the stress-induced failure modes of coating are also analyzed. The topics discussed provide some insights into the development of a methodology for designing fail-safe coating systems.展开更多

The complex function method was used as a basis for the theoretical model of the space crack prevention in metal dies using electromagnetic heating. The crack arrest was accomplished by a pulse current discharge through the inner and outer. The theoretical analysis results show that the temperature around the crack tip rises instantly above the melting point of the metal. Small welded joints are formed at a small sphere near the crack tip inside the metal die by metal melting as a result of the heat concentration effect when the current pulse discharged. The thermal compressive stress field appears around the crack tip at the moment. The research results show that the crack prevention using electromagnetic heating can decrease the stress concentration and forms a compressive stress area around the crack tip, and also prevents the main crack from propagating further, and the goal of crack preventing can be reached.展开更多

Thermal stresses and residual thermal stresses were calculated by an ANSYS finite element analysis software. Negative thermal expansion coefficient method was proposed and element birth and death method was applied to analyze the residual thermal stresses which have non-uniform initial temperature field. The thermal stress intensity factors (TSIFs) at the tips of long and short cracks are calculated using a singular integral equation technique. The critical thermal shock △Tc that causes crack initiation is calculated using a stress intensity factor criterion. Numerical examples of TSIFs and △Tc for an Al2O3/Si3N4 FGM plate are presented to illustrate the effects of thermal property gradation, crack spacing and crack length ratio on the TSIFs and △Tc. It is found that for a given crack length ratio, the TSIFs at the tips of both long and short cracks can be reduced significantly and △Tc can be enhanced by introducing appropriate material gradation. The TSIFs also decrease dramatically with a decrease in crack spacing. The TSIF at the tips of short cracks may be higher than that for the long cracks under certain crack geometry conditions. Hence, the short cracks instead of long cracks may first start to grow under the thermal shock loading.展开更多

Each layer is assumed to be made of homogeneous and isotropic elastic material. The relevant displacement components for each layer are taken to be axisymmetric about a line, which is perpendicular to the plane surfaces of all layers. The stress function for each layer, therefore, satisfies a single equation in absence of any body forces. The equation is then solved by integral transform technique. Analytical expressions for thermo-elastic displacements and stresses in the underlying mass and the corresponding numerical codes are constructed for any number of layers. However, the numerical comparison is made for three and four layers.展开更多

At first, according to the particularity of functionally gradient coat (FGC) the thermal elastic stress analysis for FGC was carried out based on the plane stress hypothesis. It is obtained that the peak value of plane thermal stress within FGC is only determined by the physical properties of materials of FGC and substrate, the composition distribution coefficient only influences the distribution and trend of plane thermal stress. And the plane thermal stress criterion for design of FGC was presented. Then the plane thermal stress of diamond like carbon/titanium alloy FGC was calculated.展开更多
