New Indicators of the Technological Impact of Scientific Production

Purpose:Building upon pioneering work by Francis Narin and others,a new methodological approach to assessing the technological impact of scientific research is presented.Design/methodology/approach:It is based on the analysis of citations made in patent families included in the PATSTAT database that is to scientific papers indexed in Scopus.Findings:An advanced citation matching procedure is applied to the data in order to construct two indicators of technological impact:on the citing(patent)side,the country/region in which protection is sought and a patent family’s propensity to cite scientific papers are taken into account,and on the cited(paper)side,a relative citation rate is defined for patent citations to papers that is similar to the scientific paper-to-paper citation rate in classical bibliometrics.Research limitations:The results are limited by the available data,in our case Scopus and PATSTAT,and especially by the lack of standardization of references in patents.This required a matching procedure that is neither trivial nor exact.Practical implications:Results at the country/region,document type,and publication age levels are presented.The country/region-level results in particular reveal features that have remained hidden in analyses of straight counts.Especially notable is that the rankings of some Asian countries/regions move upwards when the proposed normalized indicator of technological impact is applied as against the case with straight counts of patent citations to those countries/regions’published papers.Originality/value:In our opinion,the level of sophistication of the indicators proposed in the current paper is unparalleled in the scientific literature,and provides a solid basis for the assessment of the technological impact of scientific research in countries/regions and institutions. 展开更多

Modeling the dynamics of firms' technological impact

Recent studies in complexity science have uncovered temporal regularities in the dynamics of impact along scientific and other creative careers, but they did not extend the obtained insights to firms. In this paper, we show that firms' technological impact patterns cannot be captured by the state-of-the-art dynamical models for the evolution of scientists' research impact, such as the Q model. Therefore, we propose a time-varying returns model which integrates the empiricallyobserved relation between patent order and technological impact into the Q model. The proposed model can reproduce the timing pattern of firms' highest-impact patents accurately. Our results shed light on modeling the differences behind the impact dynamics of researchers and firms. 展开更多

Purpose:The disseminating of academic knowledge to nonacademic audiences partly relies on the transition of subsequent citing papers.This study aims to investigate direct and indirect impact on technology and policy originating from transformative research based on ego citation network.Design/methodology/approach:Key Nobel Prize-winning publications(NPs)in fields of gene engineering and astrophysics are regarded as a proxy for transformative research.In this contribution,we introduce a network-structural indicator of citing patents to measure technological impact of a target article and use policy citations as a preliminary tool for policy impact.Findings:The results show that the impact on technology and policy of NPs are higher than that of their subsequent citation generations in gene engineering but not in astrophysics.Research limitations:The selection of Nobel Prizes is not balanced and the database used in this study,Dimensions,suffers from incompleteness and inaccuracy of citation links.Practical implications:Our findings provide useful clues to better understand the characteristics of transformative research in technological and policy impact.Originality/value:This study proposes a new framework to explore the direct and indirect impact on technology and policy originating from transformative research. 展开更多

Influence of Economic Growth on Expansion of Urban Construction Land in the Yellow River Basin of China and Its Policy Implications

In the context of rapid urbanization and industrialization,achieving a coordinated relationship between urban construction land expansion(UCLE)and economic growth is essential for sustainable development,especially in developing countries.This study examined the spatiotemporal relationship between UCLE and economic growth in the Yellow River Basin(YRB),China from 2000 to 2020.An extended IPAT(Impact=Population×Affluence×Technology)decoupling framework and the geographical detector model were employed at a 5-km grid scale.Results show that urban construction land(UCL)expanded slowly before 2005,accelerated between 2005 and 2015,and declined thereafter.Since 2015,UCLE in most parts of the YRB has gradually decoupled from economic growth.The geographical detector analysis revealed that economic growth,along with its interactions with natural,locational,and socioeconomic factors,significantly influenced UCLE.Notably,location factors have gained importance since 2015,reducing the role of economic growth as the primary driver of UCLE in the YRB’s lower reaches.Nonetheless,economic growth continues to significantly influence the upper and middle reaches.These findings highlight the need for more precise and differentiated strategies for land utilization and economic growth,tailored to finer spatial scales,to better integrate human-land systems and promote high-quality regional development. 展开更多

County-level Agricultural Non-CO_(2)Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Scenario Simulation in Hunan Province,China

In the context of the era of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality,clarifying the emission patterns of non-CO_(2)Greenhouse Gas(GHG)from agricultural sources is of practical significance to China’s implementation of greenhouse gas emission reduction policies.The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC)coefficient method was used to calculate non-CO_(2)GHG emissions from agricultural sources in 122 counties in Hunan Province,China,from 2010 to 2020,and the spatiotemporal evolution characteristics of emission intensity were analyzed.The Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population,Affluence,and Technology(STRIPAT)model forecasted the prospective evolution of non-CO_(2)GHG emissions from agricultural sources at the county level under various scenarios from 2030 to 2050.The results demonstrated a general decline in non-CO_(2)GHG emissions from agricultural sources within the study area,with 75.41%of counties exhibiting a reduction in emissions.Geographically,emissions were higher in the Dongting Lake area and central Hengyang.The emission intensity per unit of agricultural added value and the intensity per unit of agricultural land area showed an overall downward trend.Spatially,the emission intensity per unit of farmland area in a few counties(cities,districts)in southern Hunan was still relatively high.By forecasting the non-CO_(2)GHG emissions from agricultural sources,the majority of counties(cities and districts)demonstrated a gradual decline in emissions,suggesting that agricultural production had the potential to reduce emissions in the future,while also facing certain pressure to reduce emissions.It is recommended that Hunan Province formulate agricultural carbon emission reduction policies that take regional development differences into account.This would provide a reference for future agricultural carbon emission reduction research in the whole country. 展开更多

In recent years,researchers have devoted considerable attention to identifying the causes of urban environmental pollution.To determine whether migrant populations significantly affect urban environments,we examined the relationship between urban environmental pollutant emissions and migrant populations at the prefectural level using data obtained for 90 Chinese cities evidencing net in-migration.By dividing the permanent populations of these cities into natives and migrants in relation to the population structure,we constructed an improved Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population,Affluence and Technology model(STIRPAT)that included not only environmental pollutant emission variables but also variables on the cities’attributes.We subsequently conducted detailed analyses of the results of the models to assess the impacts of natives and migrants on environmental pollutant emissions.The main findings of our study were as follows:1)Migrant populations have significant impacts on environmental emissions both in terms of their size and concentration.Specifically,migrant populations have negative impacts on Air Quality Index(AQI)as well as PM2.5 emissions and positive impacts on emissions of NO2 and CO2.2)The impacts of migrant populations on urban environmental pollutant emissions were 8 to 30 times weaker than that of local populations.3)Urban environmental pollutant emissions in different cities differ significantly according to variations in the industrial structures,public transportation facilities,and population densities. 展开更多

To evaluate the quality and damage condition of the electrolyzer,wave velocity detection technology and impact echo technology were used to detect the cathode part of the electrolyzer.The experimental results show that wave velocity is linearly related to the porosity,and there is also a linear relationship between wave velocity and the square root of reciprocal density in cathode carbon blocks(CCBs)before installation into electrolyzer.Combined with detection results of wave velocity and voltage drop,the large-size CCBs with relatively good quality can be found.Through the impact echo technology on cathode steel rods(CSRs),the results of the on-site detection show that the damage condition of CSRs can be effectively evaluated,and the damage location of CSRs can be determined.This study proposes a novel and quantifiable method for the evaluation of cathode quality and damage,which provides a reference for prolonging the service life of the electrolyzer. 展开更多

Artificial Intelligence(AI)tools become essential across industries,distinguishing AI-generated from human-authored text is increasingly challenging.This study assesses the coherence of AI-generated titles and corresponding abstracts in anticipation of rising AI-assisted document production.Our main goal is to examine the correlation between original and AI-generated titles,emphasizing semantic depth and similarity measures,particularly in the context of Large Language Models(LLMs).We argue that LLMs have transformed research focus,dissemination,and citation patterns across five selected knowledge areas:Business Administration and Management(BAM),Computer Science and Information Technology(CS),Engineering and Material Science(EMS),Medicine and Healthcare(MH),and Psychology and Behavioral Sciences(PBS).We collected 15000 titles and abstracts,narrowing the selection to 2000 through a rigorous multi-stage screening process adhering to our study’s criteria.Result shows that there is insufficient evidence to suggest that LLM outperforms human authors in article title generation or articles from the LLM era demonstrates a marked difference in semantic richness and readability compared to those from the pre-LLM.Instead,it asserts that LLM is a valuable tool and can assist researchers in generating titles.With LLM’s assistance,the researcher ensures that the content is reflective of the finalized abstract and core research themes,potentially increasing the impact and accessibility and readability of the academic work. 展开更多
