Cultivation metaphors that compare teachers and students to gardeners and plants,respectively,have a long presence in the field of education.While such metaphors can be used to represent learner-centered pedagogies in...Cultivation metaphors that compare teachers and students to gardeners and plants,respectively,have a long presence in the field of education.While such metaphors can be used to represent learner-centered pedagogies in which a teacher fosters the growth of their students,there is also a darker side to cultivation metaphors.For instance,Zipory(2020)argues that characteristics of agriculture’s grain economy-like repetitiveness,coercion,and lack of diversity-can be imposed onto education.Following Zipory’s call for the forest to serve as a more apt metaphorical trajectory for education,I propose using the forest garden as a middle ground between the traditional garden and the natural forest.To highlight the potential usefulness of the forest garden metaphor in education,I explore its application as related to teacher professional development(PD),specifically content and language integrated learning(CLIL)PD.By reflecting on the design and outcomes of Project SCILLA,a CLIL PD program for Kazakhstani university instructors,as well as CLIL PD more broadly,I demonstrate how the forest garden metaphor conceptualizes the relationships and power dynamics between and across various stakeholders in education in response to global rhetoric,national and local policies,and interpersonal interactions.By emulating the sustainable forest garden’s principles of planning and intentionality,localization,interconnectedness,diversity,creativity,and growth from decay,stakeholders can(re)shape the policies and practices of multilingual,multicultural education systems.In addition,education researchers can use a metaphorical forest garden lens to better appreciate the complexities at play within dynamic educational landscapes.展开更多

The extent to which schools in a country or region prioritize the professional development of mathematics teachers influences the quality of these teachers,thereby affecting students’mathematics learning and performa...The extent to which schools in a country or region prioritize the professional development of mathematics teachers influences the quality of these teachers,thereby affecting students’mathematics learning and performance.Over the years,the PISA test has evolved into the largest and most influential international educational assessment program.This study,based on PISA 2022 questionnaire data,examines the relationship between the professional growth of mathematics teachers and students’mathematics performance by analyzing samples from sixteen countries/economies.The research focuses on schools’support for mathematics teachers’professional growth,investigating the correlation with students’mathematics literacy test scores through metrics such as the average proportion of teachers who participated in professional development training courses in the past three months and the average proportion of schools offering different types of in-house professional growth training.Based on the findings,recommendations are proposed,including placing greater emphasis on the professional development and growth of mathematics teachers,as well as anchoring this growth in students’learning and development.This study provides multinational insights and scientific evidence for educational management related to mathematics teachers’professional development,offering theoretical support for improving the quality of secondary mathematics education,fostering students’mathematical literacy,and promoting educational equity.展开更多

The former encompasses a wide range of teachereducation initiatives at the levels of diploma, bachelor’s degree, postgraduate diploma, and even master’s degree for teacher licensure purposes. These are widely documented in the literature.What is important is how teacher professional development contributes to bolstering the teachereducator force, which is relatively insufficiently documented due to the very fact that different educational systems have somewhat different expectations of such programs in relation to the ideologies and theories underpinning the teacher professional development program design and curriculum offering. Taking stock of a postgraduate diploma program in English language teaching(PGDELT) for teachers’ continuing professional development with a 31-year history housed at a premier teacher education institution in Singapore, which has successfully graduated over 1, 000 English language teachers for colleges and universities in China, I intend to highlight some of its key features, as a former student and then a lecturer on the program, in order to draw implications for sustainable growth of language teacher education programs, especially those whose main purposes are to prepare teachers of English as a second or foreign language(ESL/EFL) and provide continuing professional development opportunities for such inservice teachers.展开更多

However, there is ...Continuing Professional Development (CPD) provides an important strategy for reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality with the aim of attaining Millennium Development goals (MDG) four and five. However, there is lack of information about how Kenyan midwives understand and perceive CPD and how this is situated in the practice and social context. This research aimed to explore Kenyan midwives’ experience and perceptions of CPD. A descriptive explorative approach gathered focus group discussion and questionnaire data on beliefs, opinions, and perceptions, demotivating and motivating factors to CPD of a total of 25 midwives in a level five hospital in Kenya. Questionnaires were piloted and self-administered after cleaning and focus groups taped and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed thematically using inductive approach with the aid of SPSS computer program. Results: Four key themes emerged from the data: Midwives’ views of CPD, their motivators for undertaking CPD, the choices they made around CPD, their demotivators for undertaking CPD. Congruence with the issues evident in the literature were: the difficulties with role diversity, the importance of CPD in personal and professional growth, the importance of flexible modes of study and the importance of a supportive culture for ongoing learning. The study findings helped in identifying gaps in the literature about Kenyan midwives’ perspectives on CPD.展开更多

文摘The integrated development of nursing education and innovation&entrepreneurship education is a crucial approach to cultivating high-quality nursing professionals and advancing the discipline of nursing.This paper discusses the main issues currently faced in the integration process and provides reform suggestions from six aspects:curriculum system,teaching methods,practical teaching platforms,project competitions,faculty development,and evaluation systems.These explorations aim to offer theoretical support and practical references for promoting the deep integration of nursing education and innovation&entrepreneurship education,ultimately enhancing students’innovation and entrepreneurial capabilities.

文摘The extent to which schools in a country or region prioritize the professional development of mathematics teachers influences the quality of these teachers,thereby affecting students’mathematics learning and performance.Over the years,the PISA test has evolved into the largest and most influential international educational assessment program.This study,based on PISA 2022 questionnaire data,examines the relationship between the professional growth of mathematics teachers and students’mathematics performance by analyzing samples from sixteen countries/economies.The research focuses on schools’support for mathematics teachers’professional growth,investigating the correlation with students’mathematics literacy test scores through metrics such as the average proportion of teachers who participated in professional development training courses in the past three months and the average proportion of schools offering different types of in-house professional growth training.Based on the findings,recommendations are proposed,including placing greater emphasis on the professional development and growth of mathematics teachers,as well as anchoring this growth in students’learning and development.This study provides multinational insights and scientific evidence for educational management related to mathematics teachers’professional development,offering theoretical support for improving the quality of secondary mathematics education,fostering students’mathematical literacy,and promoting educational equity.
文摘Teacher professional development(TPD), which is related with teacher education, has been the topic of vital significance in the world educational reform. There are diverse modes and approaches of teacher development, among which, teacher autonomy(TA) is a new concept. It is relatively new and has received insufficient attention in China, especially in vocational colleges. The related research of this kind on English teachers in vocational colleges is far from enough. Based on this situation,some investigations were conducted on the topic of TA among 5 vocational colleges in Kunming, Yunnan Province. By utilizing questionnaires and interviews as the main investigation tools, the present author conducted the survey of the current situation of the English teachers' professional development and the existing problems, aiming at exploring the effective ways of promoting English language teachers'(autonomy) development in the context of vocational colleges.

Action research is potentially beneficial to both pre-service teachers and in-service teachers in their professional development and it should play an important role in the curriculum renewal of English teaching methodology in China.
文摘College English Teachers are the main force in China's college English teaching.Their professional development has great impact on the quality of college English education.In this study,120 college English teachers in colleges and universities in Kaifeng were investigated.It revealed many problems about college English teaching staff such as unreasonable structure of professional titles,weak scientific research ability and strenuous class teaching task etc.The study analyzes the affecting factors and puts forward the corresponding strategies concerning College English Teachers' professional development.
文摘Teachers are the backbones of any educational institutions. They not only play vital roles in students' development;they also directly affect the stature of their respective scholastic organizations. Highly qualified instructors produce competent and well-rounded students— learners who are more than ready to face the quirks and challenges of the labor force. This paper primarily discusses the following questions: What is teacher's professional development? What is higher vocational teacher's professional development? And how can scholastic institutions promote it? The conclusion states that the characteristics of higher vocational education directly influence the higher vocational teacher's professional development; therefore, it must be nurtured and promoted for the development of all the stakeholders of learning institutions – students, teachers, management staff,the learning institution itself, and the nation as a whole.
文摘Initial teacher preparation and teachers’ continuing professional development are two significant pillars of the teacher education enterprise. The former encompasses a wide range of teachereducation initiatives at the levels of diploma, bachelor’s degree, postgraduate diploma, and even master’s degree for teacher licensure purposes. These are widely documented in the literature.What is important is how teacher professional development contributes to bolstering the teachereducator force, which is relatively insufficiently documented due to the very fact that different educational systems have somewhat different expectations of such programs in relation to the ideologies and theories underpinning the teacher professional development program design and curriculum offering. Taking stock of a postgraduate diploma program in English language teaching(PGDELT) for teachers’ continuing professional development with a 31-year history housed at a premier teacher education institution in Singapore, which has successfully graduated over 1, 000 English language teachers for colleges and universities in China, I intend to highlight some of its key features, as a former student and then a lecturer on the program, in order to draw implications for sustainable growth of language teacher education programs, especially those whose main purposes are to prepare teachers of English as a second or foreign language(ESL/EFL) and provide continuing professional development opportunities for such inservice teachers.
文摘Continuing Professional Development (CPD) provides an important strategy for reduction of maternal morbidity and mortality with the aim of attaining Millennium Development goals (MDG) four and five. However, there is lack of information about how Kenyan midwives understand and perceive CPD and how this is situated in the practice and social context. This research aimed to explore Kenyan midwives’ experience and perceptions of CPD. A descriptive explorative approach gathered focus group discussion and questionnaire data on beliefs, opinions, and perceptions, demotivating and motivating factors to CPD of a total of 25 midwives in a level five hospital in Kenya. Questionnaires were piloted and self-administered after cleaning and focus groups taped and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed thematically using inductive approach with the aid of SPSS computer program. Results: Four key themes emerged from the data: Midwives’ views of CPD, their motivators for undertaking CPD, the choices they made around CPD, their demotivators for undertaking CPD. Congruence with the issues evident in the literature were: the difficulties with role diversity, the importance of CPD in personal and professional growth, the importance of flexible modes of study and the importance of a supportive culture for ongoing learning. The study findings helped in identifying gaps in the literature about Kenyan midwives’ perspectives on CPD.
