Mapping What They Know: Concept Maps as an Effective Tool for Assessing Students’ Systems Thinking

In 2006 anew biology curriculum called “Human Biology: Emphasizing the Role of Homeostasis” was introduced into the Israeli high school system. Complex systems like those that make up the human body have become increasingly important as a focus of high school education. This study examines the effectiveness of the concept map as a assessment tool for students’ systems thinking, a tool that provides researchers with a detailed picture of the systems thinking development taking place within individual students. The content of the students’ concept maps was translated into information about students’ system thinking using the Systems Thinking Hierarchy (STH) model, a model in which system thinking is categorized according to eight hierarchical characteristics or abilities. The goal was to use the maps to characterize Israeli high school students’ understanding of the body’s systemic nature. To do this, we identified the extent to which the students understand three central elements of systems, namely hierarchy, homeostasis, and dynamism, and then analyzed this understanding according to its place within the hierarchical stages of the STH model. The extensive qualitative data analysis of 48 concept maps made by 11th grade biology majors suggest that the strength of the concept map is in its ability to describe the first two levels of system thinking (analysis and synthesis). However, it proved less successful in eliciting evidence of the third and highest level, particularly of students’ understanding of patterns, of homeostasis and their capacity for temporal thinking. 展开更多

With the deepening of the reform of China and it’s joining to WTO, many industries and enterprises wi ll be confronted with severe challenge while being offered the opportunity to wa lk up to the world. The arrival of knowledge economy and web time has provided t he space for the innovation on enterprise management. It has also provided new m ethod and model for enterprise management, that is online management based on th e internet. The online management use an enterprise model including the goal of the enterprise and the scheme to carry out it to represent the whole operational of all the work. The online management is constructed on the integration of exp ert system, database, software and other technical models. How to scientifically manage the entire system of product, precisely master the condition of quantity and quality and analyze the rules of the change of produc t quality in order to carry out the overall control of quality, guarantee the go od condition of product as well as improve product quality and prolong it’s se rvice life was discussed in this thesis. Based on the above research the thesis also discussed how to develop the study on product quality information and const ruct it’s decision making support system. The concrete measures to improve peopl e’s concept of quality are also raised. Based on the type analysis, scientific management of product quality information should start from dynamic information of quality, instruction information as we ll as the information about the use, maintain, management and conservation of pr oduct, and induce them and further propose a design scheme of feedback system on product quality information, and then set up the blueprint of the information s ystem of product quality. In the present study, an e-learning system, which is made up of 3 parts including text-based learning materials, quizzes to review the content of the learning materials and CO<sub>2</sub> emission simulation, was designed and developed with the purpose of supporting environmental learning. Targeting a wide range of people, the operation period of this system was 1 month. Based on the results of questionnaire survey for users, it was evident that the quiz function and the simulation function of CO<sub>2</sub> emission contributed to the efficiency in environmental learning, and the format of the e-learning system was effective and helpful for environmental learning. Additionally, with the users’ awareness related to environmental conservation before and after using the system, significant changes in awareness were seen in areas such as behavioral intention, sense of urgency and sense of connection. Furthermore, as it was revealed that 62% of the total access numbers were from mobile devices, it was effective to prepare an interface optimized for mobile devices enabling users to use the system from their smartphones and tablet PCs. 展开更多

Throughout the vehicle crash event, the interactions between vehicle, occupant, restraint system (VOR) are complicated and highly non-linear. CAE and physical tests are the most widely used in vehicle passive safety development, but they can only be done with the detailed 3D model or physical samples. Often some design errors and imperfections are difficult to correct at that time, and a large amount of time will be needed. A restraint system concept design approach which based on single-degree-of-freedom occupant-vehicle model (SDOF) is proposed in this paper. The interactions between the restraint system parameters and the occupant responses in a crash are studied from the view of mechanics and energy. The discrete input and the iterative algorithm method are applied to the SDOF model to get the occupant responses quickly for arbitrary excitations (impact pulse) by MATLAB. By studying the relationships between the ridedown efficiency, the restraint stiffness, and the occupant response, the design principle of the restraint stiffness aiming to reduce occupant injury level during conceptual design is represented. Higher ridedown efficiency means more occupant energy absorbed by the vehicle, but the research result shows that higher ridedown efficiency does not mean lower occupant injury level. A proper restraint system design principle depends on two aspects. On one hand,the restraint system should lead to as high ridedown efficiency as possible, and at the same time, the restraint system should maximize use of the survival space to reduce the occupant deceleration level. As an example, an optimization of a passenger vehicle restraint system is designed by the concept design method above, and the final results are validated by MADYMO, which is the most widely used software in restraint system design, and the sled test. Consequently, a guideline and method for the occupant restraint system concept design is established in this paper. 展开更多

The underground water-sealed storage technique is critically important and generally accepted for the national energy strategy in China. Although several small underground water-sealed oil storage caverns have been built in China since the 1970s, there is still a lack of experience for large-volume underground storage in complicated geological conditions. The current design concept of water curtain system and the technical instruction for system operation have limitations in maintaining the stability of surrounding rock mass during the construction of the main storage caverns, as well as the long-term stability. Although several large-scale underground oil storage projects are under construction at present in China, the design concepts and construction methods, especially for the water curtain system, are mainly based on the ideal porosity medium flow theory and the experiences gained from the similar projects overseas. The storage projects currently constructed in China have the specific features such as huge scale, large depth, multiple-level arrangement, high seepage pressure, complicated geological conditions, and high in situ stresses, which are the challenging issues for the stability of the storage caverns. Based on years’ experiences obtained from the first large-scale (millions of cubic meters) underground water-sealed oil storage project in China, some design and operation problems related to water curtain system during project construction are discussed. The drawbacks and merits of the water curtain system are also presented. As an example, the conventional concept of “filling joints with water” is widely used in many cases, as a basic concept for the design of the water curtain system, but it is immature. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of the conventional concept are pointed out, with respect to the long-term stability as well as the safety of construction of storage caverns. Finally, new concepts and principles for design and construction of the underground water-sealed oil storage caverns are proposed. 展开更多

In this article commonly known concepts are analyzed regarding their suitability for the German transmission system. Therefore, an approach for the analysis was developed and exemplary results are given using this approach. Under consideration of the overall system, the concepts of reducing losses in combination with minimizing(n-1)-warnings or-indications^1 as well as the sole minimization of(n-1)-warnings and-indications are the most reasonable approaches. However, under grid security aspects best results can be achieved by reducing operational limits and therefore, by the minimization of(n-1)-warnings. 展开更多

Background: Nine proteins were identified as putative profibrotic biomarkers in systemic sclerosis (SSc) and an unrelated fibrotic disease in a previously published proteomic study. As the majority of these proteins were orphans of commercially available antibodies, the nine proteins were investigated to determine whether binding peptide aptamers of the Stefin A quadruple mutant-Tracy variant (referred to as “affimers”) could be validated by enzyme linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) to allow the quantification of these candidate biomarkers in the sera of SSc patients. Materials and Methods: Candidate biomarker peptides were analysed by high throughput affimer microarray to identify binding affimers. Two candidate biomarkers were prioritised, and binding affimers were expressed from genetically modified BL21 competent E. coli strains and purified. These affimers were used in indirect ELISA, and then sandwich ELISA formats against the candidate biomarker recombinant proteins osteonectin and pigment epi-thetlium-derived factor (PEDF). Results: 39 affimers were identified as binders for eight of the nine candidate biomarker peptides were by affimer microarray;six for osteonectin and eleven for PEDF. Two of the six and all eleven were able to recognize physiological concentrations (5 and 1 μg·ml﹣1) of osteonectin and PEDF, respectively by indirect ELISA. In sandwich ELISA format: two affimers were able to detect recombinant PEDF;however, the two affimers identified in indirect ELISA were unable to recognise recombinant osteonectin, and were thus hypothesised to bind to osteonectin at the same binding site. Discussion: SSc is currently an orphan of fully validated biomarkers, which is required for the development of stratified medicine in this field. This approach has laid the groundwork for an affimer based on multiplexed assay, to validate biomarkers in the sera of SSc patients in the future. 展开更多

目的分析达芬奇机器人与程序化理念指导下右半结肠癌根治术教学模式在结直肠肛门外科进修医师专业化培训中的应用效果。方法选取2021年5月至2024年5月在郑州大学第一附属医院进修的51名医师,将其分为机器人组25名(采用传统教学方式教授... 目的分析达芬奇机器人与程序化理念指导下右半结肠癌根治术教学模式在结直肠肛门外科进修医师专业化培训中的应用效果。方法选取2021年5月至2024年5月在郑州大学第一附属医院进修的51名医师,将其分为机器人组25名(采用传统教学方式教授达芬奇机器人手术系统辅助右半结肠癌根治术)和程序化组26名(采用在程序化理念指导下教授达芬奇机器人手术系统辅助右半结肠癌根治术)。培训期满对两组进修医师进行理论及实操考核,比较两组理论考核、实操考核、实践能力自我评价评分和教学满意度。结果教学后,程序化组理论考核评分和实操考核评分高于机器人组(t分别=2.12、2.27,P均<0.05);程序化组实践能力自我评价量表各评分明显高于机器人组(t分别=2.76、2.85、2.20、2.64、2.11、3.18、2.75、2.67、2.25、2.15,P均<0.05);程序化组的教学满意度各项评分均高于机器人组(t分别=3.06、3.40、3.67、2.17、2.40、2.34、3.09、2.69、2.30、2.06,P均<0.05)。结论在程序化理念指导下学习的达芬奇机器人手术系统辅助右半结肠癌根治术的进修医师上手更快,教学效果更好。 展开更多
