The bender element testing features its in-plane directivity, which allows using bender elements to measure the shear wave velocities in a wider range of in-plane configurations besides the standard tip-to-tip alignment. This paper proposed a novel bender element testing technique for measuring the horizontal shear wave velocity of soils, where the bender elements are surface- mounted and the axes of the source and receiver elements are parallel to each other. The preliminary tests performed on model ground of silica sand showed that, by properly determining the travel distance and time of the shear waves, the surface-mounted bender elements can perform as accurately as the conventional "tip-to-tip" configuration. Potentially, the present system provides a promising nondestructive tool for characterizing geomaterials and site conditions both in laboratory and in the fields. 展开更多

Aiming at obtaining high power density of surface-mounted and interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(SIPMSM),it is important to accurately calculate the temperature field distribution of SIPMSM,and a magnetic-thermal coupling method is proposed.The magnetic-thermal coupling mechanism is analyzed.The thermal network model and finite element model are built by this method,respectively.The effects of power frequency on iron losses and temperature fields are analyzed by the magnetic-thermal coupling finite element model under the condition of rated load,and the relationship between the load and temperature field is researched under the condition of the synchronous speed.In addition,the equivalent thermal network model is used to verify the magnetic-thermal coupling method.Then the temperatures of various nodes are obtained.The results show that there are advantages in both computational efficiency and accuracy for the proposed coupling method,which can be applied to other permanent magnet motors with complex structures. 展开更多

The influence of bread-loaf shaped magnet poles under parallel magnetization on the cogging torque of surface-mounted permanent magnet(SPM)motors is studied.For the SPM motors having magnetic poles with eccentricity and sine harmonic compensation,the electromagnetic performances of integer and fractional slot motors are compared.It is found that the cogging torque and torque ripple of the integer and fractional slot motors can be reduced with the same eccentric magnet pole.The cogging torque and torque ripple of a fractional slot motor can be decreased by sine harmonic compensation,however,the same sine harmonic compensation has a small influence in integer slot motors.By varying the magnetic poles,the contribution of the field harmonics(k=(2n+1)p),which are a direct result of magnet magnetization,to the cogging torque also changes.The electromagnetic performance of a 3 kW prototype is tested,and it is found that the experimental results validate the theoretical investigation. 展开更多

The surface-mounted and interior permanent magnet synchronous motor(SIPMSM)has the characteristics of multiple variables,strong coupling and nonlinearity.In order to improve the performance of SIPMSM,this paper presents a multi-objective optimal design process using Taguchi and response surface methodology(RSM).The peak value of cogging torque(PVCT),ratio value of average torque and permanent magnet weight(RTW),torque ripple and back-EMF total harmonics distortion(ETHD)are selected as optimization goals.The experiment matrix is established by Taguchi method,and analyzed the tendency and proportion of the effect of the optimization parameters on SIPMSM performance.The rules of choosing multi-objective optimization parameters are obtained.The least-squares method is used to establish the optimal objective function,and RSM is used to obtain the resolutions of the optimization objective function.Comparing the initial performance with optimized performance verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method. 展开更多

Permanent magnet(PM)motors are widely used in our daily lives.Taking a surface-mounted PM motor as an example,a magnetic circuit model considering the peripheral magnetic flux leakage is established.Maxwell software is used to simulate different loads and thicknesses and the materials of the shielding layers.The magnetic flux leakage around the motor has a sinusoidal distribution in the space.The value of the magnetic flux leakage is inversely proportional to the power of P+1 from the surface of the core.The thicker the shielding layer,the smaller the magnetic leakage.The greater the relative permeability of the shielding layer,the better the shielding effect.The results provide ideas and recommendations for the magnetic flux leakage analysis and the design of non-magnetic or low magnetic motors. 展开更多

The fabrication and properties of a novel double layered surface-mount magnetoelectric(ME) device are investigated and reported. This ME device is made up of two opposite polarized piezoelectric PZT slices bonded on the same side of a magnetostrictive material Metglas, forming a novel two PZT in-series device. ME voltage obtained from the two PZT in-series is obviously higher than that of single PZT in a magnetic field with certain value. The ME voltage coefficient(αV) of the surface-mount ME device is significantly enhanced by adjusting the thickness of Metglas: 1) At a frequency of 1 k Hz, αV of this device increases with the layer number of Metglas increased, and the maximum value of αV is about 4.25 times than the minimum; 2) At a frequency of 5 k Hz, the maximum value of αV is 458 mV /Oe, which derives from the ME device with three layers Metglas. This novel design provides an effective way to manufacture miniature and high sensitive ME devices, which makes it possible to apply ME device into integrated circuit(IC). 展开更多

In this study, we developed a new computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model called Airflow Analyst that deepens the affinity between CFD and geographic information system (GIS). First, a precise simulation of the surface-mounted cube was conducted. Validation testing based on the obtained data confirmed the predictive accuracy of Airflow Analyst. Second, New National Stadium Japan (Tokyo Olympic Stadium) was accurately reproduced in a computer, capturing the latest detailed urban area data for the base. For the target of the constructed 3D models, simulations with a large number of grid points/cells (CFD) were conducted. These simulations reproduced the complex turbulent flow fields both inside and outside the stadium. The experiment successfully reproduced the CFD simulation using a large number of grid points/cells, where the conditions of the wind flow ventilation from the sky were similar to those of the intended stadium design. 展开更多

The emf expression can be derived with the PM volume-integration method,allowing easier optimization and prediction of the emf harmonic content.An analytical expression is developed for predicting the electromotive force(emf)waveforms and flux linkage resulting from the motion of permanent magnets(PM)in the case of two cylinders,where the outer cylinder carries a surface-mounted winding and the inner cylinder carries the PMs.The expressions are based on the PM Volume-Integration Method,which uses a volume integral calculated over the magnet volume,rather than the usual surface integral over the coil surface.The specific case of surface-mounted arc PM with radial magnetization is analyzed.An outer cylinder with infinitely thin winding distribution on its inner surface is considered.The chording factor,slot factor and spread factor are included in the analytical expression.The emf waveform and related harmonics are predicted analytically and validated by comparing with a finite element analysis and with experiment. 展开更多

Indium gallium aluminium phosphide(InGaAlP)-based thin-film surface-mounted device(SMD) LEDs have attracted wide attention in research and development due to their portability and miniaturization. We report the optical characterization of InGaAlP thin-film SMD LED mounted on FR4, 2 W, and 5 W aluminum(Al) packages. The optical and thermal parameters of LED are determined at different injection currents and ambient temperatures by combining the T3ster(thermal transient tester) and TeraL ED(thermal and radiometric characterization of power LEDs) systems. Analysis shows that LED on a 5 W Al substrate package obtains the highest luminous and optical efficiency. 展开更多

To improve the dynamic performance of conventional deadbeat predictive current control(DPCC)under parameter mismatch,especially eliminate the current overshoot and oscillation during torque mutation,it is necessary to enhance the robustness of DPCC against various working conditions.However,the disturbance from parameter mismatch can deteriorate the dynamic performance.To deal with the above problem,firstly,traditional DPCC and the parameter sensitivity of DPCC are introduced and analyzed.Secondly,an extended state observer(ESO)combined with DPCC method is proposed,which can observe and suppress the disturbance due to various parameter mismatch.Thirdly,to improve the accuracy and stability of ESO,an adaptive extended state observer(AESO)using fuzzy controller based on ESO,is presented,and combined with DPCC method.The improved DPCC-AESO can switch the value of gain coefficients with fuzzy control,accelerating the current response speed and avoid the overshoot and oscillation,which improves the robustness and stability performance of SPMSM.Finally,the three methods,as well as conventional DPCC method,DPCC-ESO method,DPCC-AESO method,are comparatively analyzed in this paper.The effectiveness of the proposed two methods are verified by simulation and experimental results. 展开更多

Recent advancements in power electronics technology evolves inverter fed electric motors.Speed signals and rotor position are essential for controlling an electric motor accurately.In this paper,the sensorless speed control of surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor(SPMSM)has been attempted.SPMSM wants a digital inverter for its precise working.Hence,this study incor-poratesfifteen level inverter to the SPMSM.A sliding mode observer(SMO)based sensorless speed control scheme is projected to determine rotor spot and speed of the multilevel inverter(MLI)fed SPMSM.MLI has been operated using a multi carrier pulse width modulation(MCPWM)strategy for generation offif-teen level voltages.The simulation works are executed with MATLAB/SIMU-LINK software.The steadiness and the heftiness of the projected model have been investigated under no loaded and loaded situations of SPMSM.Furthermore,the projected method can be adapted for electric vehicles. 展开更多

Four different PV (photovoltaic) systems deployed around Tucson Arizona on geomembranes are used to test the feasibility of converting mine tailings and landfills into solar energy generating sites. Differences between these deployed systems include: two types of geomembrane materials, two different module anatomies and two different locations. Module mounting techniques unique to mine tailing sites are described. Several system failures observed during the first two years of operation are explained here in detail. Validated predictions for the operating temperature of these systems and their associated electrical performance are presented. It was determined that PV modules mounted on light-colored thermoplastic with shielded wiring operate at lower temperatures, are structurally stable, and experience fewer wiring failures. 展开更多

In this paper, two different designs, with dummy slots and bread-loaf magnets techniques, are presented to reduce the electromagnetic vibration in integral-slot surface-mounted permanent-magnet(SPM) machines. Firstly, the stator slotting effect on the magnetic field modulation and radial force modulation is investigated. It reveals the amplitude of the modulated magnetic field and modulated radial force is greatly affected by the slot opening effect, while the spatial order is closely associated with the slot numbers. Subsequently, the dummy slots and bread-loaf magnets design are developed for a 36-slot/12-pole integral-slot SPM machine to reduce the electromagnetic vibration. Finally, two SPM machines, with conventional and bread-loaf magnets,are manufactured. Experimental tests are carried out to validate the theoretical analyses. 展开更多

This study aimed to improve the vibration and torque of an integral-slot surface-mounted permanent magnet(SPM)machine by optimizing the shape of the harmonically injected permanent magnet(PM).First,the effect of the third harmonic injected into the sinusoidal PM shape on the electromagnetic performance of a 36-slot/12-pole SPM machine was investigated,including the torque performance and vibration response.It was found that the Sin+3rd harmonic-shaped PM had a contrary effect on the torque and vibration performance of the integral-slot machine,which improved the torque capability but worsened the vibration performance.Second,the response surface model and Barebones multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on a trade-off between the average torque and vibration were implemented to determine the optimal harmonic injection.Subsequently,the performances of the optimal Sin+3rd-shaped and eccentric PM machines were compared,showing the excellent torque and vibration performance of the adopted method.Finally,a prototype was manufactured and tested to verify the results of the theoretical analysis. 展开更多

This paper proposes an on-load voltage distortion compensation method,in which the voltage distortion is mainly produced in the surface-mounted permanent magnet machines having closed slot.Apart from the voltage distortions caused by the inverter,such as dead time and inverter non-linearity,the on-load voltage distortion has relatively large magnitude dependent of machine speed.As a result,it causes a significant distortion of current waveforms and deteriorates control performance.Hence,a voltage disturbance compensation method using a disturbance observer is proposed and implemented.Based on the machine model,the disturbance observer is chosen which helps to observe a voltage disturbance,while the error between measured and estimated currents is minimized.The disturbance observer only compensates the sixth-multiple harmonic components of the inverter voltage in synchronous reference frame.The harmonic compensator with multiple narrow-band pass based adaptive filter is proposed and implemented in the feedback loop with current controllers.The observed voltage disturbances are compensated to the reference voltages.In addition,robust performance of the proposed method is shown against the parameter uncertainties.The effectiveness of the proposed compensation scheme is validated by the experiments. 展开更多

In this study we present the design and realization of a tunable dual band wireless power transfer(TDB-WPT)coupled resonator system.The frequency response of the tunable band can be controlled using a surface-mounted varactor.The transmitter(Tx)and the receiver(Rx)circuits are symmetric.The top layer contains a feed line with an impedance of 50Ω.Two identical half rings defected ground structures(HR-DGSs)are loaded on the bottom using a varactor diode.We propose a solution for restricted WPT systems working at a single band application according to the operating frequency.The effects of geometry,orientation,relative distance,and misalignments on the coupling coefficients were studied.To validate the simulation results,the proposed TDB-WPT system was fabricated and tested.The system occupied a space of 40 mm×40 mm.It can deliver power to the receiver with an average coupling efficiency of 98%at the tuned band from 817 to 1018 MHz and an efficiency of 95%at a fixed band of 1.6 GHz at a significant transmission distance of 22 mm.The results of the measurements accorded well with those of an equivalent model and the simulation. 展开更多

The rapid development of computer vision techniques has brought new opportunities for manufacturing industries,accelerating the intelligence of manufacturing systems in terms of product quality assurance,automatic assembly,and industrial robot control.In the electronics manufacturing industry,intensive variability in component shapes and colors,background brightness,and visual contrast between components and back-ground results in difficulties in printed circuit board image classification.In this paper,we apply computer vision techniques to detect diverse electronic components from their background images,which is a challenging problem in electronics manufacturing indus-tries because there are multiple types of components mounted on the same printed circuit board.Specifically,a 13-layer convolutional neural network(ECON)is proposed to detect electronic components either of a single category or of diverse categories.The proposed network consists of five Convolution-MaxPooling blocks,followed by a flat-tened layer and two fully connected layers.An electronic component image dataset from a real manufacturing company is applied to compare the performance between ECON,Xception,VGG16,and VGG19.In this dataset,there are 11 categories of components as well as their background images.Results show that ECON has higher accuracy in both single-category and diverse component classification than the other networks. 展开更多
