A total of 65 children with mild iron deficiency anemia (IDA) were divided into 5 groups, and received 0, 25, 50, 100 and 150 mg/day of vitamin C (VC) respectively every day for 8 weeks. Hemoglobin, serum ferritin, free erythrocyte and hematocrit were determined every week. At a daily average intake of about 30 mg of VC and 7.5 mg of Fe, the results of the study indicate that: (1) VC supplement alone could effectively control children's IDA, and a dose-dependant relationship was observed. (2) 50 mg/day of VC is the most efficient dosage and 6 weeks is the shortest time for an effective therapy. (3) With a diet predominately comprised of plant foods, it is suggested that appropriate dose of VC should be supplemented for the children during winter and spring in northeastern areas of China. 展开更多

Background: The consumption of dietary supplements (DS) has increased by almost 10% last decade. This trend may be true also for pregnant women;however, it was reported that pregnant women do not sufficient and correct knowledge on nutritional needs during pregnancy. Thus, we here attempted to determine the French situation of how French pregnant women take DS and its social-clinical significance using questionnaires, with special reference to vitamin D (VD) overtaking. Materials and Methods: A prospective multi-centric study was performed in three maternities in Paris. One hundred-fifty questionnaires were administered to pregnant women by midwife. Results: Thirty-four patients were interviewed at the maternity ward of the Deaconesses, 61 at the Pitié-Salpêtrière and 55 at Armand Trousseau. During pregnancy, DS started mainly during the first trimester. Frequently, doctors initially prescribe them and women tended to continue to take them thereafter. Possible VD overdosage was observed. Conclusion: We here characterized French pregnant women in terms of DS during pregnancy and also, to our knowledge, for the first time emphasized the risk of vitamin D overdose during pregnancy in France. However, since the cumulative dose throughout the pregnancy was not determined here, definite conclusion of whether women really take overdose of this supplement may not be made. Women of higher socio-professional society tended to consume more DS during pregnancy, and, thus, further monitoring may be needed especially to this fraction of pregnant women. 展开更多

Investigating the biological processes of iron(Fe)homeostasis is crucial for comprehending crop genetic improvement, which in turn helps address human malnutrition. This study utilized phenotyping, ionomics, and transcriptome analysis to uncover the regulatory mechanism of Fe homeostasis in rice under different Fe concentrations and during Fe supplementation. Our results showed both Fe deficiency and excess impede rice growth, with Fe excess exerting a more severe impact, particularly on the roots. The decrease in crown roots under excessive Fe conditions likely serves as an adaptive mechanism to counteract Fe toxicity.Transcriptomic analysis identified 4652 differentially expressed genes affected by Fe stress and supplementation. When Fe is supplemented to Fe-deficient rice, there are upregulations in the expression of genes related to Fe ion concentration and Fe homeostasis at 10 min and 2 h after supplementation, respectively, along with a brief downregulation at 30 min. This indicated a protective mechanism in the roots during Fe uptake.Notably, shoots with a lack of Fe accumulation did not show re-entry of Fe after supplementation, and there was a sustained downregulation of Fe-regulated genes. This suggests that the signaling from roots to shoots influences the response of shoots to Fe supplementation in rice. The molecular changes in Fe homeostasis discovered in this study can contribute to the improvement of rice. 展开更多

Background Selenium(Se)is an essential soil mineral that can be incorporated into animal feedstuffs.Because of a lack of soil Se in some regions, organic or inorganic supplementation strategies must be implemented to prevent deficiencies and promote optimal ovine health. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to assess how inorganic versus organic Se supplementation influenced ewe Se status and immune function during late gestation and postpartum.Dorset Rideau ewes(n=110)were fed a Se deficient diet from gestation d 110 through postpartum d 49 and received one of four daily oral Se treatments diluted in 5 mL of sugar water:0 mg Se,0.3 mg inorganic Se,0.3 mg organic Se,and 0.6 mg organic Se.Throughout the trial, the ewes received various immune challenges, including intramuscular immunizations with a novel antigen(ovalbumin;OVA)on trial d 0 and 10,an intradermal OVA challenge on d 20,and a lipopolysaccharide(LPS)endotoxin challenge on trial d 49.Results The organic Se treatment groups had higher serum Se concentrations on most trial days compared to the 0.3 mg inorganic and control groups(P<0.05).No significant treatment differences were found for the dermal hypersensitivity response to OVA,anti-OVA antibody response, glutathione peroxidase activity, cytokine response, cortisol response,or rectal temperature(P>0.05).However,4 h post-LPS injection, the serum albumin concentration was significantly lower in the 0.3 mg inorganic group compared to both organic Se groups, potentially indicating a higher degree of inflammation in the ewes supplemented with the inorganic Se.Conclusions The results of this study indicate that organic Se supplementation can promote a higher Se status in ewes over time, but Se supplementation during this study period did not affect tested immunological parameters. This lack of difference in immune responsiveness between groups may be due to an absence of true serum Se deficiencies in the Se-deficient group or the levels of Se supplementation being insufficient to significantly improve immunocompetence. 展开更多

The role of copper element has been an increasingly relevant topic in recent years in the fields of human and animal health, for both the study of new drugs and innovative food and feed supplements. This metal plays an important role in the central nervous system, where it is associated with glutamatergic signaling, and it is widely involved in inflammatory processes. Thus, diseases involving copper(Ⅱ) dyshomeostasis often have neurological symptoms, as exemplified by Alzheimer's and other diseases(such as Parkinson's and Wilson's diseases). Moreover, imbalanced copper ion concentrations have also been associated with diabetes and certain types of cancer, including glioma. In this paper, we propose a comprehensive overview of recent results that show the importance of these metal ions in several pathologies, mainly Alzheimer's disease, through the lens of the development and use of copper chelators as research compounds and potential therapeutics if included in multi-target hybrid drugs. Seeing how copper homeostasis is important for the well-being of animals as well as humans, we shortly describe the state of the art regarding the effects of copper and its chelators in agriculture, livestock rearing, and aquaculture, as ingredients for the formulation of feed supplements as well as to prevent the effects of pollution on animal productions. 展开更多

Reperfusion following cerebral ischemia causes both structural and functional damage to brain tissue and could aggravate a patient's condition;this phenomenon is known as cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury.Current studies have elucidated the neuroprotective role of the sirtuin protein family(Sirtuins)in modulating cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. However, the potential of utilizing it as a novel intervention target to influence the prognosis of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury requires additional exploration. In this review, the origin and research progress of Sirtuins are summarized, suggesting the involvement of Sirtuins in diverse mechanisms that affect cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury, including inflammation, oxidative stress,blood-brain barrier damage, apoptosis, pyroptosis, and autophagy. The therapeutic avenues related to Sirtuins that may improve the prognosis of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury were also investigated by modulating Sirtuins expression and affecting representative pathways, such as nuclear factor-kappa B signaling, oxidative stress mediated by adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase, and the forkhead box O.This review also summarizes the potential of endogenous substances, such as RNA and hormones, drugs, dietary supplements, and emerging therapies that regulate Sirtuins expression. This review also reveals that regulating Sirtuins mitigates cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury when combined with other risk factors. While Sirtuins show promise as a potential target for the treatment of cerebral ischemiareperfusion injury, most recent studies are based on rodent models with circadian rhythms that are distinct from those of humans, potentially influencing the efficacy of Sirtuinstargeting drug therapies.Overall, this review provides new insights into the role of Sirtuins in the pathology and treatment of cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury. 展开更多

This study proposes and systematically evaluates an optimized integration of warm surface seawater injection with depressurization for the long-term exploitation of marine natural gas hydrates.By employing comprehensive multiphysics simulations guided by field data from hydrate production tests in the South China Sea,we pinpoint key operational parameters—such as injection rates, depths, and timings—that notably enhance production efficiency. The results indicate that a 3-phase hydrate reservoir transitions from a free-gas-dominated production stage to a hydrate-decomposition-dominated stage.Moderate warm seawater injection supplies additional heat during the hydrate decomposition phase, thereby enhancing stable production;however, excessively high injection rates can impede the depressurization process.Only injection at an appropriate depth simultaneously balances thermal supplementation and the pressure gradient, leading to higher overall productivity.A“depressurization-driven sensible-heat supply window”is introduced, highlighting that timely seawater injection following initial depressurization prolongs reservoir dissociation dynamics. In this study area, commencing seawater injection at 170 d of depressurization proved optimal. This optimized integration leverages clean and renewable thermal energy, providing essential insights into thermal supplementation strategies with significant implications for sustainable, economically feasible, and efficient commercial-scale hydrate production. 展开更多

Probiotic supplementation enhances the abundance of gutassociated Rhodobacteraceae species, critical symbionts contributing to the health and physiological fitness of Litopenaeus vannamei.Understanding the role of Rhodobacteraceae in shaping the shrimp gut microbiota is essential for optimizing probiotic application. This study investigated whether probiotics benefit shrimp health and fitness via the recruitment of Rhodobacteraceae commensals in the gut.Probiotic supplementation significantly enhanced feed conversion efficiency, digestive enzyme activity, and immune responses, thereby promoting shrimp growth.Additionally, probiotics induced pronounced shifts in gut microbial composition, enriched gut Rhodobacteraceae abundance, and reduced community variability, leading to a more stable gut microbiome.Network analysis revealed that the removal of Rhodobacteraceae nodes disrupted gut microbial connectivity more rapidly than the removal of nonRhodobacteraceae nodes, indicating a disproportionate role of Rhodobacteraceae in maintaining network stability.Probiotic supplementation facilitated the migration of Rhodobacteraceae taxa from the aquatic environment to the shrimp gut while reinforcing deterministic selection in gut microbiota assembly.Transcriptomic analysis revealed that up-regulation of amino acid metabolism and NF-κB signaling pathways was positively correlated with Rhodobacteraceae abundance. These findings demonstrate that probiotic supplementation enriches key Rhodobacteraceae taxa, stabilizes gut microbial networks, and enhances host digestive and immune functions, ultimately improving shrimp growth performance. This study provides novel perspectives on the ecological and molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of probiotics on shrimp fitness. 展开更多

Background The creatine-creatine kinase-phosphocreatine(Cr-CK-PCr)system maintains intracellular ratios of ATP/ADP for support of cellular functions and has been characterized at the placental-uterine interface of rodents, primates, swine and sheep, and thus may support fetal development. This study determined effects of dietary supplementation of creatine(Cr)to gestating gilts on fetal development, the number and ratio of primary and secondary muscle fibers, and on protein expression in endometrium and fetal biceps-femoris muscle, respectively in fetal pigs on d 60 and d 90 of gestation. Methods Reproductively mature gilts were synchronized to estrus using Matrix, observed for estrus(d 0),and artificially inseminated 12 h and 36 h later.Gilts were individually housed and fed 0.86 kg of 14%crude protein diet twice daily that meets nutritional requirements for pregnant gilts.Gilts were assigned to either basal diet control(CON)group,or Cr supplemented group(provided 30 g Cr monohydrate daily)from d 10 to either d 60 or d 90 of gestation.Gilts were euthanized and hysterectomized on either d 60 or d 90 of gestation. These protocols were completed in two replicates,as gilts were bred in spring and euthanized in summer or bred in fall and euthanized in winter(n=20 gilts/replicate).Litter size,crown-rump length, sex, and fetal weight was recorded.Three female and male fetuses closest to mean litter weight were selected to assess effects of treatment on weight of fetal brain, kidney, liver, spleen, and biceps-femoris muscle.Data were analyzed to determine effects of treatment, days of gestation, replicate, and sex on litter size, fetal measurements, and incidence of intrauterine growth restriction. Results Dietary Cr supplementation increased fetal brain weight to body weight ratios on d 90 of gestation(P<0.05)and fetal kidney weight to body weight ratios on d 60 of gestation(P<0.01),while days of gestation had significant effect on expression of mitochondrial CK isoform in gilt endometria(P<0.05).Conclusions Results suggest that dietary supplementation of Cr in gestating gilts enhanced development of select fetal organs and contribute to understanding roles of the Cr-CK-PCr system in pregnancy. 展开更多

The objective of this study was to predict, screen, synthesize, and investigate cocrystals of poorly soluble flavonoids that are commonly found in dietary supplements with bipolar compound picolinic acid(PA).To improve the efficiency and success rate of experimental screening, two virtual tools based on hydrogen bond propensity(HBP)and modified molecular electrostatic potential(MEP)maps were used. The prediction accuracy of HBP and MEP is 58.82%and 94.11%,respectively,presenting that the MEP model is very powerful in the discovery of pharmaceutical cocrystals.Among the 12 successfully obtained cocrystals,4 single crystals of PA with luteolin(LUT),genistein(GEN),taxifolin(TAX),dihydromyricetin(DHM)were obtained for the first time.Charged-assisted O-H…O and N-H…O hydrogen bonds appear as main hydrogen bonding synthons, and PA adopts a zwitterionic form after cocrystallization.GEN-PA,TAX-PA,and DHM-PA showed higher DPPH'radical-scavenging capacities;LUT-PA and DHM-PA showed higher ABTS^(+)radical-scavenging capacities;GEN-PA and DHM-PA possessed better protective effects on H9c2 cells from hypoxic injury caused by CoCl_(2)than corresponding pure flavonoids. 展开更多

This study was conducted at Fafan Research Center, Golajo research site to evaluate the effect of Moringa stenopetala and pigeon pea leaf supplementation on growth performance of short-eared Somali goat breed. A total of fifteen yearling indigenous short-eared Somali goat breeds with an initial weight of 15.2 ± 0.30 kg were assigned to three treatment groups using completely randomized design. Pigeon pea (Pp) and Moringa stenopetala (MS) feeds were formulated using 0%, 5%, and 10% inclusion levels of MSLM and PPLM as experimental diets, respectively. The feed of the experiment was prepared in two levels (2 kg of Moringa stenopetala and 2 kg of pigeon pea) and was supplemented to experimental animals in treatments one and two, respectively. The average e initial body weight of selected male goats was 18.82 ± 0.37, 18.8 ± 0.37 and 17.8 ± 0.37 kg under treatment groups T1, T2 and control respectively. Data was analyzed using general linear model (GLM) procedure of SAS computer package Version 9.0 (SAS, 2002). The final weights gain (FWG) of goats on T1 and T2 of experimental group was significantly (P 0.05) the final weight gain of goat supplemented on Moringa stenopetala (T1) and pigeon pea levels (T2). The mean average weight gains (AWG) obtained from the supplemented group in this study were 7.50 ± 0.37 and 7.82 ± 0.37 kg for T1 and T2, whereas mean weight gains for un-supplemented goats were found to be 6.26 ± 0.37 kg. Feeding of dried Moringa stenopetala and pigeon pea leaves mixture improved body weights and average daily body weight gain without affecting feed intake and overall health of Somali goat breed. As Moringa stenopetala and pigeon pea leaves are rich nitrogen/protein source, they can be used effectively as substitute for conventional concentrate in the diet of growing goats at small holder farmer’s level where they can be grown in abundance. Therefore, for higher quality of forage and higher total DM yield for animal feeding, moringa should be harvested at wider harvesting intervals of at least 6th- to 8th-week intervals. Similarly, for pigeon peas, 4- to 6-week harvesting interval can result in optimum forage as well as feed quality and resulted in better growth performances for Somali short-eared goat breeds. 展开更多

Synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles(ZnO-NPs)via green method is an outstanding alternative to conventional/regular methods;however, the safety or toxicity of the biosynthesized ZnO-NPs in vivo is not fully explored. This study was conducted to evaluate the protective efficiency of cinnamaldehyde-loaded chitosan nanoparticles(Cin@CSNPs)against oxidative damage and genotoxicity of ZnO-NPs in mice.ZnO-NPs were biosynthesized using the extract of fresh leaves of Mentha pulegium L.Cin was extracted from cinnamon essential oil,and was loaded into chitosan nanoparticle(Cin@CSNPs).Both ZnO-NPs,Cin@CSNPs and CSNPs were characterized. The in vitro release of Cin@CSNPs was determined. In the biological study,6 groups of male BALB/c mice were treated by gavage for 3 weeks as follows, control group, the group received ZnO-NPs(25 mg/kg b.w),the groups received Cin@CSNPs at low dose(50 mg/kg b.w)or high dose(100 mg/kg b.w),and the groups received ZnO-NPs plus Cin@CSNPs at the 2 tested doses.Blood and tissue samples were collected for different biochemical, genetical and histological studies. The particle size of ZnO-NPs,CSNPs,and Cin@CSNPs were(20.78±2.60),(170.0±3.7),and(218.23±2.90)nm,andξ-potential were(32.7±4.6),(8.32±0.27)and(4.80±0.21)mV,respectively.ZnO-NPs disturbed the biochemical and oxidative stress indices,AFP,CEA,TNF-α,chromosomal aberrations in somatic and germ cells, and sperm abnormality along with severe pathological changes in the hepatic, renal, and testicular tissues.Cin@CSNPs improved significantly all the parameters tested and the histological picture in a dose-dependent.Therefore,the biosynthesized ZnO-NPs exhibit oxidative damage and genotoxicity, and Cin@CSNPs have potential protective effects against the risks of ZnO-NPs and may be a promising tool to overcome the challenges of using Cin in food and pharmaceuticals applications. 展开更多

Unlike other major crops, little research has been performed on tomato to reduce the generation time for speed breeding. We evaluated several agronomic treatments to reduce the generation time of tomato in the‘M82'(determinate)and‘Moneymaker'(indeterminate)varieties and evaluated the best combination in conjunction with embryo rescue.Five container sizes with volumes of 0.2 L(XS),0.45 L(S),0.8 L(M),1.3 L(L),and6 L(XL),were evaluated in the first experiment under the autumn cycle. We found that plants grown in XL containers exhibited better development and required less time from sowing to anthesis(DSA)and from anthesis to fruit ripening(DAR).In the second experiment, using XL containers in the autumn-winter cycle,we evaluated the effects of cold priming at the cotyledonary stage, water stress,P supplementation, and K supplementation on generation time.Compared to the control,we found that cold priming significantly reduced the number of leaves, plant height to first the inflorescence, and DSA(2.7 d),whereas K supplementation reduced the DAR(8.8 d).In contrast, water stress and P supplementation did not significantly affect any of the measured traits like DAR,DSA or fruit set.To validate these data,in a third experiment with XL containers in the spring-summer cycle, the combination of cold priming and K supplementation was tested, confirming the significant effect of this combination on the reduction of generation time(2.9 d for DSA and 3.9 d for DAR)compared to the control.Embryo rescue during the cell expansion cycle(average of 22.0 d and 23.3 d after anthesis for‘M82'and‘Moneymaker',respectively)allowed the shortening of the generation time by 8.7 d in‘M82'and 11.6 d in‘Moneymaker'compared to the in planta fruit ripening. The combination of agronomic treatments with embryo rescue can effectively increase the number of generations per year from three to four for speed breeding of tomato. 展开更多

The number of people travelling to high-altitude areas or participating in mountain sports is increasing. For individuals visiting such terrains for the first time, the lack of adaptation to the hypobaric hypoxic environment can lead to the deterioration of gastrointestinal function and barriers. In more severe cases, this lack of acclimatisation may lead to acute high-altitude illness. At present, the prevention and treatment of these issues primarily revolve around strategies such as descending to lower altitudes, oxygen supplementation, and medication. However, the available intervention measures to prevent health problems resulting from high-altitude environments remain limited. In this review,we discuss common altitude-related illnesses, including gastrointestinal problems. Moreover,we explore the potential of commonly used medications and dietary supplements in alleviating altitude-related issues. This review can provide a basis for future research on modulating the gut microbiota for mitigating high-altitude illness. 展开更多
