Effect of melt superheating on solidification microstructure and mechanical properties of K424 superalloy

The effect of melt superheating treatment on the solidification microstructure and mechanical properties of theγ'phase precipitation-strengthened K424 superalloy was investigated.Differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)experiments were conducted to explore the influence of melt treatment temperature on the undercooling of the superalloy.Additionally,pouring experiments were carried out to assess how alterations in both the temperature and duration of melt treatment impacted the grain size,secondary dendrite arm spacing(SDAS),elemental segregation,and mechanical properties of the alloy.Metallographic analysis,scanning electron microscopy,energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS)and Thermo-Calc software were employed for microstructure characterization.The test specimens were subjected to tensile testing at room temperature and stress rupture testing at 975℃ under 196 MPa.The findings reveal that appropriate melt treatment conditions result in decreased grain size,refined SDAS,minimized elemental segregation,and significant improvements in mechanical properties.Specifically,the study demonstrates that a melt treatment at 1,650℃ for 5 min results in the smallest average grain size of 949μm and the smallest SDAS of 25.38μm.Furthermore,the room temperature tensile properties and creep resistance are notably affected by the melt treatment parameters.It is shown that specific melt treatment conditions,such as holding at 1,650℃ for 5 min,result in superior room temperature strength and extended stress rupture life of the K424 superalloy,while a balance between strength and stability is achieved at 1,600℃ with a holding time of 10 min.These findings offer guidance for optimizing the melt treatment parameters for the K424 superalloy,laying a foundation for further investigations. 展开更多

The influence of melt superheating treatment on the solid/liquid (S/L) interface morphology of directionally solidified Ni-based superalloy DZ125 is investigated to elucidate the relationship between melt characteristic and S/L interface stability. The results indicate that the interface morphology is not only related to the withdrawal velocity (R) but also to the melt superheating temperature (Ts) when the thermal gradient of solidification interface remains constant for different Ts with appropriate superheating treatment regulation. The interface morphology changes from cell to plane at R of 1.1 μm/s when Ts increases from 1500°C to 1650°C, and maintains plane with further elevated Ts of 1750°C. However, the interface morphology changes from coarse dendrite to cell and then to cellular dendrite at R of 2.25 μm/s when Ts increases from 1500°C to 1650°C and then to 1750°C. It is proved that the solidification onset temperature and the solidification interval undergo the nonlinear variation when Ts increases from 1500°C to 1680°C, and the turning point is 1650°C at which the solidification onset temperature and the solidification interval are all minimum. This indicates that the melt superheating treatment enhances the solidification interface stability and has important effect on the solidification characteristics. 展开更多

Superheating and melting behaviors of Ag clusters with Ni coating studied by molecular dynamics and experiments

Using molecular dynamics with embedded-atom-type interatomicpotentials, we simulated the melting behavior of a spherical Ag3055 cluster coated with Ni. The semi-coherent Ag/Ni interface formed at low temperatures acts as an effective barrier against the surface melting and leads to a substantial superheating of the Ag cluster. The melting point was found to be about 100 K above the equilibrium melting point of the bulk Ag crystal (1230 K±15 K) and about 290 K above that (1040 K) of the free Ag3055 cluster. A superheating of 70 K was observed in the high-temperature differential scanning calorimetry measurement for Ag particles with a mean size of 30 nm embedded in Ni matrix prepared by means of melt-spinning. Melting is initiated locally at the defective interfacial area and then propagates inwards, suggesting a heterogeneously nucleated melting event at the Ag/Ni interface. 展开更多

The effect of superheated steam(SHS)treatment on the quality characteristics of rape bee pollen were studied,and the efficiency of inactivation and inhibition of lipid oxidation were analyzed to investigate the differences between SHS and cobalt-60 isotope(^(60)Co)radiation treatment.The number of total plate count(TPC)and mold colonies(MC)remained within the limits of the standards after SHS treatment at 140℃for 2 min.Neither TPC nor MC were detected after^(60)Co irradiation.Peroxidase(POD)and polyphenol oxidase(PPO)activities significantly decreased with increasing temperature and duration of SHS,while^(60)Co radiation completely inactivated PPO.Compared to^(60)Co radiation,SHS treatment inhibited the deterioration of rape bee pollen by avoiding hydroperoxide production and lipid oxidation due to lack of oxygen.These results suggested SHS under 140℃for 2 min was the most suitable to inactivate the microorganisms and enzymes in rape bee pollen with minimal lipid oxidation. 展开更多

The experimental results show that fine equiaxed grains are acquired under the action of low voltage pulsed magnetic field. The refinement effect of the pulsed magnetic field is affected by the melt cooling rate and superheating. The decrease of cooling rate and superheating enhance the refinement effect of the low voltage pulsed magnetic field. The magnetic force and the melt flow during solidification are modeled and simulated to reveal the grain refinement mechanism. It is considered that the melt convection caused by the pulsed magnetic field, as well as cooling rate and superheating contributes to the refinement of solidified grains. 展开更多

This study explores the mechanism behind the generation of pressure pulses on the outer surface of a molten metal droplet when immersed in water.The absence of any external trigger is assumed,and the droplet is surrounded by a vapor layer with surface hydrodynamic waves at the vapor-liquid interface.The study examines the heating conditions of a cylindrical column of water used to model a volume of cold liquid interacting with a hot metal surface,which explosively boils upon direct contact.Within the framework of classical homogeneous nucleation theory,the relationship between pressure pulse magnitude and rise time and the size of the contact area and surface temperature of the droplet is established.A criterion for determining the magnitude of the pressure pulse is derived,showing that significant pressure pulses occur within a narrow range of values for this criterion.Experimental investigations have been conducted to measure the key parameters—such as the duration and area of contact and pressure amplitude buildup—when room-temperature water comes into contact with a hot steel surface.The experimental results are compared with the theoretical predictions.Incorporating Skripov’s theory of explosive boiling into the model helps explain the relationship between the pressure pulse and contact area,only when the droplet surface temperature is near or exceeds the temperature of the maximum possible water superheating. 展开更多

The paper reviews original data obtained by the present authors,revealed in recent separate publications,describing specific procedures for high quality grey irons,and reflecting the forecast needs of the worldwide iron foundry industry.High power,medium frequency coreless induction furnaces are commonly used in electric melting grey iron foundries.This has resulted in low sulphur(<0.05wt.%)and aluminium(<0.005wt.%)contents in the iron,with a potential for higher superheating(>1,500°C),contributing to unfavourable conditions for graphite nucleation.Thin wall castings are increasingly produced by these electric melt shops with a risk of greater eutectic undercooling during solidification.The paper focused on two groups of grey cast irons and their specific problems:carbides and graphite morphology control in lower carbon equivalent high strength irons(CE=3.4%-3.8%),and austenite dendrite promotion in eutectic and slightly hypereutectic irons(CE=4.1%-4.5%),in order to increase their strength characteristics.There are 3 stages and 3 steps involving graphite formation,iron chemistry and iron processing that appear to be important.The concept in the present paper sustains a threestage model for nucleating flake graphite[(Mn,X)S type nuclei].There are three important groups of elements(deoxidizer,Mn/S,and inoculant)and three technological stages in electric melting of iron(superheat,pre-conditioning of base iron,final inoculation).Attention is drawn to a control factor(%Mn)x(%S)ensuring it equals to 0.03–0.06,accompanied by 0.005wt.%–0.010wt.%Al and/or Zr content in inoculated irons.It was found that iron powder addition promotes austenite dendrite formation in eutectic and slightly eutectic,acting as reinforcement for the eutectic cells.But,there is an accompanying possible negative influence on the characteristics of the(Mn,X)S type graphite nuclei(change the morphology of nuclei from polygonal compact to irregular polygonal,and therefore promote chill tendency in treated irons).A double addition(iron powder+inoculant)appears to be an effective treatment to benefit both austenite and graphite nucleation,with positive effects on the final structure and chill tendency. 展开更多

The results show that the Ti existing in ELTA without Al-4B addition exhibits a certain grain refining efficiency when the melt superheating temperature is lower,but the efficiency decreases rapidly when the superheating temperature is higher.The grain refining efficiency of the Al-5Ti-1B master alloy is better than that of the Ti existing in ELTA without Al-4B addition at any superheating temperature,but it also decreases obviously with the increase of the superheating temperature.One important reason is that the TiB2 particles coming from the Al-5Ti-1B master alloy can settle down at the bottom of the Al melt easily when the superheating temperature is increased,thus decrease the number of the potent heterogeneous nuclei retained in the Al melt.If the Al-4B master alloy is added to the ELTA melt,the grain refining efficiency of the Ti existing in ELTA can be improved significantly, and does not decrease with the increase of the superheating temperature.This perhaps provides us a possible method to suppress the effect of the superheated melt on the microstructures of aluminum.. 展开更多

The control of grain size in superalloys is critical in the manufacture of gas turbine blades.The aim of the present research is to provide the technology for producing complicated hollow turbine blades with fine surface grains and better comprehensive mechanical properties.By melt superheating treatment and coating the internal surfaces of shell mould using a cobalt aluminate-bearing coating material,the in-uence of cobalt aluminate as inoculant on the surface grain sizes of turbine blade was studied with addition of cobalt aluminate:0,35%,45%-65% and 100% respectively.At the same time,the effects of cooling circumstances of the blades on surface grain sizes were also experimented under the same addition of cobalt aluminate.The results showed that the melt superheating treatment plays a significant role in the grain size and carbide morphology;and fine surface grains were obtained when the internal surfaces of shell mould were coated using cobalt aluminate coatings.When the addition of cobalt aluminate in coating is between 45%-65%,and the melt is poured into preheated shell moulds with fine silica sand as backing sand,the blades satisfied the surface grain size requirement is over 90%.In addition,comparisons of the surface grain size and the mechanical properties were also conducted between home-made and foreign-made blades. 展开更多

Superheated steam temperature control system is an indispensable part of the unit, its performance and reliability has become an important factor to ensure the safety and economy of the unit. When the superheated steam temperature is high, the thermal efficiency of the unit is relatively high. However, when the superheated steam temperature is too high, the metal material of the steam turbine cannot bear it. If the temperature is too low, the efficiency of the unit will be affected. The stability of superheated steam temperature is very important for the safe and economic operation of the unit, so there are higher requirements for its control. In the whole control system of power plant, there are many factors affecting superheated steam temperature, including steam flow disturbance, flue gas flow disturbance and desuperheating water disturbance. The spray desuperheating method is widely used at present, which is beneficial to the safe operation of superheater. Combined with the operation characteristics of the 300MW unit in Diaobingshan power plant, this paper studies and analyzes the superheated steam temperature control strategy, designs a set of control scheme under all working conditions, sets the relevant control parameters, and verifies its effect through simulation. The superheated steam temperature is regulated by two-stage spray desuperheating, and the first stage desuperheating is arranged at the inlet of platen superheater for coarse regulation of steam temperature. The secondary desuperheater is arranged at the inlet of high temperature superheater for fine adjustment. The superheated steam temperature at the outlet of the boiler is maintained at the set value by adjusting the water spray quantity of the primary and secondary superheaters. 展开更多

The high content of alkali chlorides in municipal solid waste incineration(MSWI) fly ash limit its resource reuse due to the potential environmental risks.In this paper, with superheated steam as the gasifying agent and inducer, chlorides in fly ash were removed by thermal treatment within a moderate temperature range.Thermal treatment experiments were performed under different conditions: temperature(500–800℃), steam addition(mass ratio of steam to fly ash = 0.25–1) and residence time(0.5–3 hr).Iron and aluminum powders were added to fly ash to improve the chlorine removal efficiency.Water-soluble chlorides included Na Cl and KCl, and insoluble chlorides mainly included Ca(OH)Cl.The heating process with the addition of water steam was more efficient than that without steam in terms of the removal performance of water-soluble chlorides.The removal efficiency of soluble chlorides reached 75.25% for a mass ratio of 1:1 after 1-hr thermal treatment at 700℃.When the residence time was increased above 1 hr, the total dechlorination efficiency was not increased dramatically.Moreover, adding iron and aluminum powder into the fly ash improved the removal of water-insoluble chlorides, and the total dechlorination efficiency was increased by 11.41%–16.64%. 展开更多

Aquathermolysis was studied o... This paper presents a new aquathermolysis study of conventional heavy oil in superheated steam. A new high temperature autoclave was designed, where volume and pressure could be adjusted. Aquathermolysis was studied on two different conventional heavy oil samples under different reaction times and temperatures. Experimental results show that aquathermolysis does take place for conventional heavy oil. As reaction time increases, the oil viscosity reduces. However, the reaction will reach equilibrium after a certain period of time and won't be sensitive to any further reaction time any more. Analysis shows that, while resin and asphaltenes decrease, saturated hydrocarbons and the H/C ratio increase after reaction. The main mechanism of aquathermolysis includes hydrogenization, desulfuration reaction of resin and asphaltenes, etc. 展开更多

Reliable control of superheated steam temperature is necessary to ensure high efficiency and high load-following capability in the operation of modem power plant. A nonlinear generalized predictive controller based on neuro-fuzzy network (NFGPC) is proposed in this paper. The proposed nonlinear controller is applied to control the superheated steam temperature of a 200MW power plant. From the experiments on the plant and the simulation of the plant, much better performance than the traditional controller is obtained, 展开更多
