The deep structure, material circulation, and dynamic processes in the Southeast Asia have long been an elusive scientific puzzle due to the lack of systematic scientific observations and recognized theoretical models.Based on the deep seismic tomography using long-period natural earthquake data,in this study, the deep structure and material circulation of the curved subduction system in Southeast Asia was studied, and the dynamic processes since 100 million years ago was reconstructed. It is pointed out that challenges still exist in the precise reconstruction of deep mantle structures of the study area, the influence of multi-stage subduction on deep material exchange and shallow magma activity,as well as the spatiotemporal evolution and coupling mechanism of multi-plate convergence.Future work should focus on high-resolution land-sea joint 3-D seismic tomography imaging of the curved subduction system in the Southeast Asia, combined with geochemical analysis and geodynamic modelling works. 展开更多

Paleoproterozoic subduction strongly occurred in the western margin of Yangtze plate. The basalticandesite volcanics of Ailaoshan Group and Dibadu Formation had been formed during paleo QinghaiTibet oceanic plate subduction under the paleoYangtze plate. Their trace element geochemistry suggests that their forming environments are continentalmarginarc and back arcbasin respectively. Consequently, the Paleoproterozoic subduction system in the western margin of Yangtze plate was established. Ailaoshan Group and Dibadu Formation came from an enriched mantle source that was contaminated by crustal sediments carried by subducted slab, and formed the Paleoroterozoic metamorphic basement of western margin of Yangtze plate. Ailaoshan Group is actually western boundary of Yangtze plate. 展开更多

This study focuses on the geology,geochemistry,Sr-Nd isotopes and their tectonic settings of three types of basalts in Diyanmiao ophiolite in the Xar Moron area located on the eastern margin of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt.Type I basalts are oceanic tholeiites with a depleted light rare earth element(LREE)pattern, which are similar to the typical N-mid-oceanic ridge basalt(MORB)and suggests that they were formed at a mid-oceanic ridge. The initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of Type I basalts range from 0.703966 to 0.705276 and theεNd(t)values are from 16.49 to 17.15,indicating that they were derived from a depleted mantle source.Type II basalts belong to the medium-potassium calc-akaline series and have the geochem-ical characteristics of Nb-enriched basalt(NEB)with high Nb content(14.5 ppm)and strong enrichment in LREEs,implying that they were created by the partial melting of mantle wedge peridotite that previously metasomatized by slab melts.Type III basalts are high-Al basalt(HAB)with high-Al contents(Al_(2)0_(3)=16.75 wt.%-18.00 wt.%),distinct Nb depletion and high Th/Yb ratios. Thus they were likely gen-erated in a normal island-arc setting. Therefore, the association of MORB,NEB,and HAB in the study area may be due to the subduction of a mid-oceanic ridge, and the Diyanmiao ophiolite is proposed to be formed in the forearc setting of a mid-oceanic ridge subduction system. 展开更多

Talc is a layered hydrous silicate mineral that plays a vital role in transporting water into Earth’s interior and is crucial for explaining geophysical observations in subduction zone settings. In this study,we explored the structure, equation of state, and elasticity of both triclinic and monoclinic talc under high pressures up to 18 GPa using first principles simulations based on density functional theory corrected for dispersive forces. Our results indicate that principal components of the full elastic constant tensor C_(11) and C_(22),shear components C_(66),and several off-diagonal components show anomalous pressure dependence. This non-monotonic pressure dependence of elastic constant components is likely related to the structural changes and is often manifested in a polytypic transition from a low-pressure polytype talc-I to a high-pressure polytype talc-Ⅱ.The polytypic transition of talc occurs at pressures within its thermodynamic stability. However, the bulk and shear elastic moduli show no anomalous softening. Our study also shows that talc has low velocity, extremely high anisotropy, and anomalously high V_(P)/V_(S) ratio, thus making it a potential candidate mineral phase that could readily explain unusually high V_(P)/V_(S) ratio and large shear wave splitting delays as observed from seismological studies in many subduction systems. 展开更多

The Papua New Guinea-Solomon(PN-SL)arc is one of the regions with active crustal motions and strong geological actions. Thus, its complex subduction system makes it an ideal laboratory for studying the initiation mechanism of plate subduction. However, the PN-SL subduction system has not yet been sufficiently studied, and its density structure has yet to be revealed. In this paper,we used the free-air gravity data,Parker-Oldenburg density surface inversion method, and the genetic algorithm density inversion method to obtain the density structure of an approximately 1000-km-long northwest-southeast line crossing the PN-SL subduction system under the constraints of the CRUST1.0 global crustal model, onshore seismic data, and the LLNL-G3Dv3 global P-wave velocity model. The density structure shows that density differences between the plates on the two sides of the trench could play a significant role in plate subduction. 展开更多

The bidirectional subduction system, island arc magmatic activities, and thermal structure of the forearc basin in the Molucca Sea are taken into consideration in this study. The active volcanic arcs on both sides of the bidirectional subduction zone in the Molucca Sea are undergoing arc-arc collisions. We applied a finite element thermal simulation method to reconstruct the thermal evolution history of the Molucca Sea Plate based on geophysical data. Then,we analyzed the thermodynamic characteristics of island arc volcanism on both sides of the bidirectional subduction zone. The results showed that at 10Myr,the oceanic ridge of the Molucca Sea Plate was asymmetrically biased to the west, causing this bidirectional subduction to be deeper in the west than in the east.Furthermore, the oceanic ridge subducted under the Sangihe arc at 5.5Myr,causing intermittent cessation of volcanic activities.Due to the convergence of bidirectional subduction, the geothermal gradient in the top 3km depth of the forearc area between the Sangihe and Halmahera arcs decreased from about 60℃km^(−1) at 4Myr to about 38℃km^(−1) today. Finally, within the 45–100 km depth range of the sliding surface of the subduction, anomalously high-temperature zones formed due to shear friction during the bidirectional subduction. 展开更多

Based on structural deformation analysis in the oblique Sumatra subduction system, we review uplift mechanisms of the forearc high and formation of the forearc basin. The development of the forearc high has been attributed to the flexural uplift, basin inversion, uplift of older accretion wedge, and backthrust in the landward margin of the accretion wedge. Observation of recently acquired seismic reflection data shows that the interplay between trenchward-vergent thrusts and arcward-vergent backthrusts has played a major role in the uplift of forearc high. The uplifted sediments on the forearc high were previously formed in a forearc basin environment. The present-day morphology of the forearc high and forearc basin is related to the uplift of the accretionary wedge and the overlying forearc basin sediments during Pliocene. Regardless of obliquity in the subduction system, the Sumatran forearc region is dominated by compression that plays an important role in forming Neogene basin depocenters that elongated parallel to the trench. 展开更多

Southeast Asia is located at the intersection of the Tethys and Pacific domains. The superimposed effects of the two tectonic domains have resulted in complicated deep structure, surface magma responses, and dynamic processes of Southeast Asia. Based on the latest long-term passive seismic experiment and numerical modeling, this study reconstructs the dynamic processes of the closure of the Neo-Tethys Ocean and the formation of the curved subduction system in Southeast Asia since the Late Mesozoic. P-wave velocity structure shows a remnant of the Neo-Tethys subducted slab in the lower mantle beneath Southeast Asia at a depth of approximately 1500 km. On the Java-East Timor subduction zone, the remnant slab is coupled with the Indo-Australian subducting slab in the upper mantle with the same direction, while on the Sumatra subduction zone, the remnant slab is decoupled from the Indo-Australian subducting slab in different directions. The formation of the curved subduction system in Southeast Asia is resulted from the northward subdcutions of previous Neo-Tethys and current IndoAustralian Plate, and the westward subduction of the Pacific Plate since Mesozoic. The former is characterized by continuous subduction and subsequent continental block collision, forming the current continental lithosphere in Southeast Asia and the curve-shaped Sumatra-Java subduction zone;the latter is characterized by subduction retreat and back-arc spreading, forming the eastern Philippine subduction zone and a series of marginal sea basins. Since the Early Cretaceous, the opening of the North Australian Sea resulted in stagnation of the Australian Block in the high latitude area of the southern hemisphere for a long time. The North Australian Sea was dominated by out-dipping double subduction from 45 Ma, which resulted in rapid northward drifting of the Australian Block and final collision with the Sundaland. 展开更多

A systematic account of micro-textures and a few compositional profiles of plagioclase from high-alumina basaltic aa lava erupted during the year 1994-1995, from Barren Island Volcano, NE India ocean, are presented for the first time. The identified micro-textures can be grouped into two categories: (i) Growth related textures in the form of coarse/fine-sieve morphology, fine-scale oscillatory zoning and resorption surfaces resulted when the equilibrium at the crystal-melt interface was fluctuated due to change in temperature or H20 or pressure or composition of the crystallizing melt; and (ii) morphological texture, like glomerocryst, synneusis, swallow-tailed crystal, microlite and broken crystals, formed by the influence of dynamic behavior of the crystallizing magma (convection, turbulence, degassing, etc.). Each micro-texture has developed in a specific magmatic environment, accordingly, a first order magma plumbing model and crystallization dynamics are envisaged for the studied lava unit. Magma generated has undergone extensive fractional crystallization of An-rich plagioclase in stable magmatic environment at a deeper depth. Subsequently they ascend to a shallow chamber where the newly brought crystals and pre-existing crystals have undergone dynamic crystallization via dissolution-regrowth processes in a convective self- mixing environment. Such repeated recharge-recycling processes have produced various populations of plagioclase with different micro-textural stratigraphy in the studied lava unit. Intermittent degassing and eruption related decompression have also played a major role in the final stage of crystallization dynamics. 展开更多

It has long been recognized that garnet has the capacity to preserve the trace element and isotopic signature of distinct metamorphic growth zones because of its high closure temperature.Combined with the large size of certain garnet porphyroblast, this allows investigating variations in metamorphic conditions such as pressure, temperature, deviatoric stress, and fluid composition, which occur during subduction-related metamorphism. Here, one garnet porphyroblast of 6 cm diameter was sampled from the Yardoi schists of Xizang, and the major-,trace-,and Li-Mg isotopic compositions of distinct growth zones were determined in situ. The δ^(7)Li values range from+6.0‰to+4.1‰and follow‘S-shaped’patterns on both sides of the garnet’s core, revealing a two-stage growth process corresponding to the fluid-assisted sequential recrystallization of chlorite and micas during prograde metamorphism.By contrast, once corrected for the overprinting by retrograde metamorphism,theδ^(26)Mg values vary monotonically from−1.73‰in the core to−1.32‰in the outer rim, reflecting a single-step process interpreted to result from increasing temperature and the solid-state recrystallization of chlorite-biotite during prograde metamorphism. This different behavior of Li and Mg isotopes is interpreted to result from the fact that Li is more fluid-mobile than the major element Mg. 展开更多

The Chinese Altai,a key component of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt(CAOB),represents a significant Phanerozoic accretionary orogenic belt. The oceanic-continental subduction processes spanning the Cambrian to Carboniferous and subsequent intracontinental extension since the Triassic have been well documented in the Chinese Altai, the southwestern segment of the CAOB.Deciphering the petrogenetic evolution of this region during the Permian is thus crucial for advancing our understanding of its tectonic transitions. However, the Permian tectonic setting of the Chinese Altai remains contentious. To address this knowledge gap, this study presents new geochronological and geochemical data for the Jiangjunshan pluton in the southern Chinese Altai.Zircon U-Pb geochronology reveals that the gabbro and two-mica alkali feldspar granite—which collectively constitute the primary lithology of the Jiangjunshan pluton—were emplaced at∼272±3.5 and∼272±1.6 Ma,respectively.Geochemically, the gabbro exhibits pronounced light rare-earth element(LREE)depletion, low Nb/Yb(0.39–0.46)and Ti/V(23.7–25.3)ratios,and trace-element signatures akin to normal mid-ocean ridge basalts(N-MORB).However,its conspicuous Nb-Ta depletion parallels that of island arc basalts.Depleted Hf-Nd isotopic compositions(ε_(Hf)(t)=+0.60 to+4.63,ε_(Nd)(t)=+6.32 to+7.80)in the gabbro, coupled with negligible correlation betweenε_(Nd)(t)and SiO2 contents imply limited crustal assimilation during magma evolution.Petrological modeling, based on Sm/Yb and La concentrations, suggests the gabbroic melt derived from∼8%–20%spinel lherzolte mantle melting.Analogously depleted Hf-Nd isotopes(ε_(Hf)(t)=+6.81 to+9.10,ε_(Nd)(t)=+0.79 to+1.45)in the granite, together with petrographic evidence lacking mafic-ultramafic xenoliths, point to a juvenile lower-crustal source.Integrating the gabbro’s N-MORB-like affinity with arc-specific features, regional ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism in southern Chinese Altai, and Permian tectonics,we propose a ridge-subduction regime as the likely petrogenetic setting for the Jiangjunshan magmas.During ridge subduction, upwelling of asthenospheric mantle beneath the ridge induced partial melting of the lithospheric mantle, giving rise to the parental magma of the Jiangjunshan gabbro. This mafic magma underplating subsequently heated the juvenile lower crust, triggering its partial melting and generating the parental magma of the two-mica alkali feldspar granite. Our model indicates that ridge-subduction-related magmatism persisted in the Chinese Altai until the Middle Permian, followed by a tectonic shift from oceanic-continental subduction to intracontinental extension. 展开更多

Back-arc basins are key sites for oceanic lithosphere formation and consumption at convergent plate boundaries, and their formation and subduction processes can be highly variable. The tectonic setting and evolution of the Meso-Tethys Shiquanhe-Jiali ophiolite sub-belt(SJO sub-belt)within BangongNujiang Suture Zone(BNSZ),central xizang, are disputed for the complex rock composition and ages.In this paper,we present geochronology, geochemistry and field observations on the Shiquanhe ophiolite, providing a representative ophiolite example in the western end of SJO.Based on investigation of the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of different rock types, combined with the U-Pb dating,we propose a twostage subduction model for explaining the tectonic evolution of SJO as well as the wither away of a backarc basin.Geochemical and geochronological data indicate that the ca.183 Ma LAN(north of Lameila)gabbros formed in the forearc setting and represent the early-stage subduction of the Bangong MesoTethys. This subduction induced the back-arc spreading recorded in the ca.170 Ma gabbros and lower pillow basalts of PL-SDN(Pagelizanong-Shiquanhe Dam Nan)ophiolitic fragments in the Shiquanhe ophiolite. The basaltic lavas overlying the lower basalts, represented by the ca.168–164 Ma diabasic and boninite dikes have forearc characteristics, and they represent the back-arc basin subduction initiation at a late stage. This work thus recovered the multiple tectonic evolution of SJO sub-belt and emphasise the importance of the back-arc basin subduction in the evolution of ancient oceans. 展开更多

High-Mg andesite/diorite(HMA)is useful for identifying subduction-related processes in orogenic belts, including the identification of ophiolites formed in suprasubduction zone(SSZ)environments. The E'rentaolegai high-Mg diorite from the Diyanmiao ophiolite in central Inner Mongolia,North China, has been investigated revealing low-K tholeiitic-calc-alkaline characteristics and have SiO_(2)contents of 53.44-54.92 wt%,MgO contents of 8.44-9.54 wt%,and Mg~#of 54.35-57.60,with variable Fe_(2)O_(3)(7.51-8.61 wt%),Al_(2)O_(3)(11.95-15.09 wt%),and Na_(2)O(3.42-3.94 wt%)contents, low K_(2)O(0.34-0.97 wt%),TiO_(2)(0.35-0.67 wt%),and P2O5(0.12-0.15 wt%)contents, and high Ni(43-193 ppm)and Cr(189-556 ppm)contents.Samples collected have low total rare earth element(REE)contents(30.58-77.80 ppm),with flat or slightly right-dipping REE patterns(La_(N)/Yb_(N)=2.19-3.11)and a lack of pronounced Eu anomalies. The samples are also enriched in large-ion lithophile elements(LILEs,e.g.,K,Rb,Ba,U,and Sr)and depleted in high field strength elements(e.g.,Ta,Nb,Ti,and P).The E'rentaolegai high-Mg diorite has characteristics typical of HMA,and are similar to those of sanukites from the Setouchi Arc in SW Japan. They also display high positiveε_(Nd)(t)values(+6.32 to+7.80),comparable to the values of their host rocks.Petrogenetic analyses suggest that the E'rentaolegai HMA was probably formed by the interaction of partial melts and aqueous fluids from subducted sediments with mantle peridotite.Zircon U-Pb dating reveals that the high-Mg diorite crystallized at 313.6±2.4 Ma,i.e.,late Carboniferous.Combining our data with the temporal and spatial distribution of the Diyanmiao SSZ-type ophiolite,we propose that the eastern Paleo-Asian Ocean had not closed by the late Carboniferous, but intra-oceanic subduction was ongoing.A new model of the initiation of subduction in the eastern PAO during the late Paleozoic. 展开更多

The Tasmanian microcontinent, situated along the East Gondwana accretionary margin during the late Neoproterozoic and early Palaeozoic, contains an unequivocal high-pressure metamorphic record comprising key information pertaining to the geodynamics of subduction along the margin.Subduction of the Tasmanian microcontinent is interpreted by some as a response to back-arc basin inversion prior to ophiolite obduction and high-pressure metamorphism during the Cambrian Tyennan Orogeny. However, thermobarometric evidence in support of such a model from rocks once positioned on the subducting continental margin is lacking.Despite occurrences of eclogite-facies mineral assemblages in the strongly deformed Tyennan Region of western Tasmania,garnet-bearing quartzofeldspathic assemblages documented in metasedimentary lithologies from the remote south-west coast of Tasmania have been interpreted as an expression of low-to moderate-pressure metamorphism. We report a strongly overprinted chlorite-quartz-garnet-bearing assemblage from the southern Tyennan Region(Nye Bay)which shows evidence for high-pressure metamorphism.Coarse-grained garnet porphyroblasts contain inclusions of kyanite, muscovite, and rutile, and yield in-situ Lu-Hf dates of c.520 Ma.The cm-scale garnet porphyroblasts are zoned in the major and trace elements, preserving core-rim compositional gradients reflecting garnet growth up-pressure.Aided by mineral equilibria forward modelling, the garnet rim compositions and the Zr content of Cambrian rutile constrain peak metamorphic conditions of∼17.5-19 kbar and∼780-820℃,equivalent to warm subduction thermal gradients between 410-470℃/GPa.Garnet core compositions and the Ti content of quartz inclusions in the garnet cores constrain the pressures and temperatures for garnet nucleation to∼6-7 kbar and∼560-580℃,corresponding to relatively high prograde thermal gradients between 800-965℃/GPa.The thermal gradients determined from the south-west Tasmanian metamorphic record provide a direct window into the progressive evolution of the thermal state of the Cambrian subduction system, with the physical conditions of garnet nucleation potentially reflecting those of subduction initiation. The corresponding warm thermal gradients provide evidence for subduction initiation driven by the collapse of a pre-orogenic back-arc.This interpretation is consistent with an existing tectonic model for the Tyennan Orogeny which proposes a back-arc basin origin for the protoliths to the western Tasmanian sub-ophiolitic metamorphic sole. 展开更多

The dependence of the subduction regime on three-dimensional slab geometry poses a challenge for accurately estimating the evolving thermal structure of megathrusts globally. Although slab dips and ages have gained attention, the specific impacts of oblique subduction remain unmeasured. Here, we present an integrated thermal model that quantifies how slab morphology can shape the thermal state of megathrusts, such as those in the Makran Subduction Zone. The model considers both slab obliquity and depth variations along the trench. We find a considerable match between the slab petrological dehydration zone and the distribution of great crustal earthquakes. We suggest that the accumulation of fluids along megathrusts by slab metamorphism can foster more polarized conditions for decreasing plate coupling and increasing interplate ruptures. It is thus imperative to improve model representation and more realistically represent how drivers of slab geometry affect metamorphic transitions and the occurrence of earthquakes at megathrusts. 展开更多

The Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone(YZSZ)on the southern margin of the Lhasa block and the Tangjia-Sumdo ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belt(TSMB)within the block represent natural laboratories for the study of plate tectonics and oceanic slab subduction. It is generally believed that these two zones represent the remnants of the ancient oceanic crust and upper mantle of the Yarlung Zangbo Neo-Tethys(YZNT)and the Tangjia-Sumdo Paleo-Tethys(TSPT).However,the evolutionary patterns and spatiotemporal relationships of the TSPT and the YZNT have been debated. 展开更多
