This paper introduces dynamic boundary updating-surrogate model-based(DBU-SMB),a novel evolutionary framework for global optimization that integrates dynamic boundary updating(DBU)within a surrogate model-based(SMB)approach.The method operates in three progressive stages:adaptive sampling,DBU,and refinement. In the first stage, adaptive sampling strategically explores the design space to gather critical information for improving the surrogate model. The second stage incorporates DBU to guide the optimization toward promising regions in the parameter space, enhancing consistency and efficiency. Finally, the refinement stage iteratively improves the optimization results, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of the design space. The proposed DBU-SMB framework is algorithm-agnostic,meaning it does not rely on any specific machine learning model or meta-heuristic algorithm. To demonstrate its effectiveness,we applied DBU-SMB to four highly nonlinear and non-convex optimization problems. The results show a reduction of over 90%in the number of function evaluations compared to traditional methods, while avoiding entrapment in local optima and discovering superior solutions. These findings highlight the efficiency and robustness of DBU-SMB in achieving optimal designs, particularly for large-scale and complex optimization problems. 展开更多

Double-shaft-driven needle punching machine is a specialized equipment designed for processing C/C crucible preforms. Its main needle punching module is operated by two sets of reciprocating crank-slider mechanisms. The intense vibration during needle punching not only generates huge noise, but also substantially reduces the quality of the preform. It is imperative to perform a dynamic analysis and optimization of the entire needle punching machine. In this paper, the three-dimensional(3D)model of the entire double-shaft-driven needle punching machine for C/C crucible preforms is established.Based on the modal analysis theory, the modal characteristics of the needle punching machine under various operating conditions are analyzed and its natural frequencies and vibration modes are determined. The harmonic response analysis is then employed to obtain the amplitude of the needle plate at different frequencies, and the structural weak points of the needle punching machine are identified and improved. The feasibility of the optimized scheme is subsequently reevaluated and verified. The results indicate that the first six natural frequencies of the machine increase, and the maximum amplitude of the needle plate decreases by 70.3%.The enhanced dynamic characteristics of the machine significantly improve its performance, enabling more efficient needle punching of C/C crucible preforms. 展开更多

Although the genetic algorithm (GA) has very powerful robustness and fitness, it needs a large size of population and a large number of iterations to reach the optimum result. Especially when GA is used in complex structural optimization problems, if the structural reanalysis technique is not adopted, the more the number of finite element analysis (FEA) is, the more the consuming time is. In the conventional structural optimization the number of FEA can be reduced by the structural reanalysis technique based on the approximation techniques and sensitivity analysis. With these techniques, this paper provides a new approximation model-segment approximation model, adopted for the GA application. This segment approximation model can decrease the number of FEA and increase the convergence rate of GA. So it can apparently decrease the computation time of GA. Two examples demonstrate the availability of the new segment approximation model. 展开更多

An optimization strategy is proposed to deal with the aerodynamic/stealthy/structural multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) issue of unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV). In applying the strategy, the MDO process is divided into two levels, i.e. system level optimization and subsystem level optimization. The system level optimization is to achieve optimized system objective (or multi-objective) through the adjustment of global external configuration design variables. The subsystem level optimization consists of the aerodynamic/stealthy integrated design and the structural optimization. The aerodynamic/stealthy integrated design aims at achieving the minimum aerodynamic drag coefficient under the constraint of stealthy requirement through the adjustment of local external configuration design variables. The structural optimization is to minimize the structural weight by adjusting the dimefisions of structural components. A flowchart to implement this strategy is presented. The MDO for a flying-wing configuration of UCAV is employed to illustrate the detailed process of the optimization. The results indicate that the overall process of the surrogate-based two-level optimization strategy can be implemented automatically, and quite reasonable results are obtained. 展开更多

The beam pumping unit(BPU)remains the most stable and reliable equipment for crude oil lifting.Despite its simple four-link mechanism, the structural design of the BPU presents a constrained single-objective optimization problem.Currently,a comprehensive framework for the structural design and optimization of compound balanced BPUs is lacking. Therefore, this study proposes a novel structural design scheme for BPUs,aiming to meet the practical needs of designers and operators by sequentially optimizing both the dynamic characteristics and balance properties of the BPUs.A dynamic model of compound balanced BPU was established based on D'Alembert's principle. The constraints for structural dimensions were formulated based on the actual operational requirements and design experience with BPUs.To optimize the structure, three algorithms were employed:the particle swarm optimization(PSO)algorithm, the genetic algorithm(GA),and the gray wolf optimization(GWO)algorithm. Each newly generated individuals are regulated by constraints to ensure the rationality of the outcomes.Furthermore, the integration of three algorithms ensures the increased likelihood of attaining the global optimal solution. The polished rod acceleration of the optimized structure is significantly reduced, and the dynamic characteristics of the up and down strokes are essentially symmetrical.Additionally, these three algorithms are also applied to the balance optimization of BPUs based on the measured dynamometer card. The calculation results demonstrate that the GWO-based optimization method exhibits excellent robustness in terms of structural optimization by enhancing the operational smoothness of the BPU,as well as in balance optimization by achieving energy conservation.By applying the optimization scheme proposed in this paper, the CYJW7-3-23HF type of BPU was designed, achieving a maximum polished rod acceleration of±0.675 m/s^(2) when operating at a stroke of 6 min^(−1).When deployed in two wells, the root-mean-square(RMS)torque was minimized, reaching values of 7.539 kN·m and 12.921 kN·m,respectively. The proposed design method not only contributes to the personalized customization but also improves the design efficiency of compound balanced BPUs. 展开更多

Neural-Network Response Surfaces (NNRS) is applied to replace the actual expensive finite element analysis during the composite structural optimization process. The Orthotropic Experiment Method (OEM) is used to select the most appropriate design samples for network training. The trained response surfaces can either be objective function or constraint conditions. Together with other conven- tional constraints, an optimization model is then set up and can be solved by Genetic Algorithm (GA). This allows the separation between design analysis modeling and optimization searching. Through an example of a hat-stiffened composite plate design, the weight response surface is constructed to be objective function, and strength and buckling response surfaces as constraints; and all of them are trained through NASTRAN finite element analysis. The results of optimization study illustrate that the cycles of structural analysis ean be remarkably reduced or even eliminated during the optimization, thus greatly raising the efficiency of optimization process. It also observed that NNRS approximation can achieve equal or even better accuracy than conventional functional response surfaces. 展开更多

A data-driven model ofmultiple variable cutting(M-VCUT)level set-based substructure is proposed for the topology optimization of lattice structures.TheM-VCUTlevel setmethod is used to represent substructures, enriching their diversity of configuration while ensuring connectivity. To construct the data-driven model of substructure,a database is prepared by sampling the space of substructures spanned by several substructure prototypes. Then, for each substructure in this database, the stiffness matrix is condensed so that its degrees of freedomare reduced.Thereafter, the data-drivenmodel of substructures is constructed through interpolationwith compactly supported radial basis function(CS-RBF).The inputs of the data-driven model are the design variables of topology optimization, and the outputs are the condensed stiffness matrix and volume of substructures.During the optimization, this data-driven model is used, thus avoiding repeated static condensation that would requiremuch computation time.Several numerical examples are provided to verify the proposed method. 展开更多

Fractional differential equations(FDEs)provide a powerful tool for modeling systems with memory and non-local effects, but understanding their underlying structure remains a significant challenge. While numerous numerical and semi-analytical methods exist to find solutions, new approaches are needed to analyze the intrinsic properties of the FDEs themselves. This paper introduces a novel computational framework for the structural analysis of FDEs involving iterated Caputo derivatives. The methodology is based on a transformation that recasts the original FDE into an equivalent higher-order form, represented as the sum of a closed-form,integer-order component G(y)and a residual fractional power seriesΨ(x).This transformed FDE is subsequently reduced to a first-order ordinary differential equation(ODE).The primary novelty of the proposed methodology lies in treating the structure of the integer-order component G(y)not as fixed, but as a parameterizable polynomial whose coefficients can be determined via global optimization.Using particle swarm optimization, the framework identifies an optimal ODE architecture by minimizing a dual objective that balances solution accuracy against a high-fidelity reference and the magnitude of the truncated residual series. The effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated on both a linear FDE and a nonlinear fractional Riccati equation. Results demonstrate that the framework successfully identifies an optimal,low-degree polynomial ODE architecture that is not necessarily identical to the forcing function of the original FDE.This work provides a new tool for analyzing the underlying structure of FDEs and gaining deeper insights into the interplay between local and non-local dynamics in fractional systems. 展开更多

Biological load-bearing materials, like the nacre in shells, have a unique staggered structure that supports their superior mechanical properties.Engineers have been encouraged to imitate it to create load-bearing bio-inspired materials which have excellent properties not present in conventional composites. To create such materials with desirable mechanical properties, the optimum structural parameters combination must be selected. Moreover, the optimal design of bio-inspired composites needs to take into account the trade-offs between various mechanical properties. In this paper,multi-objective optimization models were developed using structural parameters as design variables and mechanical properties as optimization objectives, including stiffness, strength, toughness, and dynamic damping.Using the NSGA-II optimization algorithm,a set of optimal solutions were solved.Additionally, three different structures in natural nacre were introduced in order to utilize the better structure when design bio-inspired materials. The range of optimal solutions that obtained using results from previous research were examined and explained why this collection of optimal solution ranges is better. Also, optimal solutions were compared with the structural features and mechanical properties of real nacre and artificial biomimetic composites to validate our models. Finally, the optimum design strategies can be obtained for nacre-like composites. Our research methodically proposes an optimization method for achieving load-bearing bio-inspired materials with excellent properties and creates a set of optimal solutions from which designers can select the one that best suits their preferences, allowing the fabricated materials to demonstrate preferred performance. 展开更多

In density-based topological design, one expects that the final result consists of elements either black (solid material) or white (void), without any grey areas. Moreover, one also expects that the optimal topology can be obtained by starting from any initial topology configuration. An improved structural topological optimization method for multidisplacement constraints is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, the whole optimization process is divided into two optimization adjustment phases and a phase transferring step. Firstly, an optimization model is built to deal with the varied displacement limits, design space adjustments, and reasonable relations between the element stiffness matrix and mass and its element topology variable. Secondly, a procedure is proposed to solve the optimization problem formulated in the first optimization adjustment phase, by starting with a small design space and advancing to a larger deign space. The design space adjustments are automatic when the design domain needs expansions, in which the convergence of the proposed method will not be affected. The final topology obtained by the proposed procedure in the first optimization phase, can approach to the vicinity of the optimum topology. Then, a heuristic algorithm is given to improve the efficiency and make the designed structural topology black/white in both the phase transferring step and the second optimization adjustment phase. And the optimum topology can finally be obtained by the second phase optimization adjustments. Two examples are presented to show that the topologies obtained by the proposed method are of very good 0/1 design distribution property, and the computational efficiency is enhanced by reducing the element number of the design structural finite model during two optimization adjustment phases. And the examples also show that this method is robust and practicable. 展开更多

Inflatable deployable structures inspired by origami have significant applications in space missions such as solar arrays and antennas. In this paper,a generalized Miura-ori tubular cell(GMTC)is presented as the basic cell to design a family of inflatable origami tubular structures with the targeted configuration.First, the classification of rigid foldable degree-4 vertices is studied thoroughly.Since the proposed GMTC is comprised of forming units(FU)and linking units(LU),types of FUs and LUs are investigated based on the classification of degree-4 vertices, respectively. The rigid foldability of the GMTC is presented by studying the kinematics of the FUs and LUs.Volume of the GMTC is analyzed to investigate multistable configurations of the basic cell. The variations in volume of the GMTC offer great potential for developing the inflatable tubular structure.Design method and parametric optimization of the tubular structure with targeted configuration are proposed. The feasibility of the approach is validated by the approximation of four different cases, namely parabolic, semicircular, trapezoidal, and straight-arc hybrid tubular structures. 展开更多
