Identifying Three Shapes of Potential Vorticity Streamers Using Mask R-CNN

Potential vorticity(PV)streamers are elongated filaments of high PV intrusions that generally exhibit three distinct shapes:ordinarily southwestward,hook,and treble-clef,each with significant influences on weather.These PV streamers are most frequent over arid and semi-arid Central Asia in the mid–high latitudes.This study applied the Mask Region-based Convolutional Neural Network algorithm(Mask R-CNN)to PV streamers on the dynamical tropopause during the warm season(May to September)over the years 2000–04 to train a weighted variational model capable of identifying these different shapes.The trained model demonstrated a strong ability to distinguish between the three shapes.A climatological analysis of PV streamers over Central Asia spanning 2000 to 2021 revealed an increasingly deep and pronounced reversal of circulation from ordinary to treble-clef shapes.The treble-clef shape featured a PV tower and distinct cut-off low in the troposphere,but the associated upward motions and precipitation were confined within approximately 1200 km to the east of the PV tower.Although the hook-shape PV streamers were linked to a weaker cut-off low,the extent of upward motion and precipitation was nearly double that of the treble-clef category.In contrast,the ordinary PV streamer was primarily associated with tropopause Rossby wave breaking and exhibited relatively shallow characteristics,which resulted in moderate upward motion and precipitation to 500 km to its east. 展开更多

Robust Adaptive Horizontal Vibration Isolation of Towed Seismic Streamers

The horizontal vibration of towed seismic streamers is a main reason for effciency reduction of the seismic survey and tail tangling.A vibration suppression scheme of towed seismic streamers is investigated in this paper.The towed seismic streamer is divided into two spans,a controlled span,i.e.,the low tension span, and an uncontrolled span,i.e.,the high tension span,by a bird.The system model includes a hyperbolic partial differential equation with variable coeffcient describing the towed seismic streamers,and an ordinary differential equation describing the dynamic of bird.Robust based-model knowledge and adaptive controllers,based on the Lyapunov method,are designed to isolate the vibration of towed seismic streamers caused by the course deviations of towing vessel,the variations of towing vessel velocity and the variations of towed seismic streamer density.The robust based-model knowledge and adaptive controllers exponentially and asymptotically drive the span-towed seismic streamer displacement to zero,respectively.A finite difference scheme is used to validate the effciency of the control law.The proposed controller can isolate effectively the disturbance originated from the towed vessel, and can provide the improved damping but not sacrifice the isolation performance.The adaptive scheme can tolerate the lack of knowledge of some uncertain parameters and can directly execute the online adjustment of the parameters.Meanwhile,the proposed control law is robust and can resist the model uncertainty due to parameter incertitude,model error and unknown disturbance and so on.The control law only includes velocity and slope,while it does not need the displacement which is diffcult to measure in the practical operations.Thus it is easy to implement. 展开更多

One of the main problems in the Ultra High Voltage (UHV) transmission project is to choose the external insulation distance, which requires a deep understanding of the long air gap discharge mechanism. The leader-streamer propagation is one of most important stages in long air gap discharge. In the conductor-tower lattice configuration, we have measured the voltage, the current on the high voltage side and the electric field in the gap. While the streamer in the leader-streamer system presented a conical or hyperboloid diffuse shape, the clear branch structure streamer in front of the leader was firstly observed by a high speed camera in: the experiment. Besides, it is found that the leader velocity, width and injected charge for the branch type streamer are greater than those of a diffuse type. We propose that the phenomenon results from the high humidity, which was 15.5-16.5 g/m3 in our experiment. 展开更多

This study presents a 44-year climatology of potential vorticity (PV) streamers in the Northern Hemisphere based upon analyses of the ERA-40 reanalysis data set. A comparison to an existing 15-year climatology yields very good agreement in the locations of PV streamer frequency maxima, but some differences are found in the amplitude of frequencies. The climatology is assessed with the focus on links between PV streamer frequencies and the synoptic- and planetary-scale variability of the dynamical tropopause. A comprehensive overview is provided on where (zonally) and when (seasonally) short-term variability throughout the extra-tropical and sub-tropical tropopause is enhanced or reduced. Several key processes that influence this variability are discussed. Baroclinic processes, for example, determine the variability in the storm-track areas in winter, whereas the Asian summer monsoon significantly influences the variability over Asia. The paper also describes links between the frequency of PV streamers in the extra-tropical and subtropical tropopause and three major northern hemisphere teleconnection patterns. The observed changes in the PV streamer frequencies are closely related to concomitant variations of PV and its gradient within the tropopause region. During opposite phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation the location of the streamer frequency maxima shifts significantly in the Atlantic and European region in both the extra-tropics and subtropics. The influence of ENSO on the streamer frequencies is most pronounced in the subtropical Pacific. 展开更多

Thedata show that irrespective of the polarity of pointed electrodes placed ina high electric field (200 kV/cm), this type of discharge develops via ballstreamers even if the gap voltage rises slowly (0.2 kV/ms). The start voltageof first positive streamers, compared to negative ones, is higher andthe amplitude and the frequency of their current pulses are much lower:about two times and more than two orders of magnitude, respectively.The higher frequency of current pulses from negative streamers provideshigher average currents and larger luminous areas of negative coronascompared to positive ones. The mechanisms of streamer generation and propagation in double-sided pulsed surface dielectric barrier discharge(SDBD)on both sides have been analyzed and investigated by experiment and numerical simulation.The fully exposed asymmetric SDBD has two discharge processes located on the high voltage electrode(HVE)side and the ground electrode(GE)side.Discharge images of the HVE side and GE side are taken by a digital camera under continuous pulse and ICCD(Intensified Charge Coupled Device)is utilized to diagnose the generation and propagation of streamers in single pulse discharge.In order to understand the physical mechanisms of streamer evolution more deeply,we establish a 2D simulation model and analyze it from the aspects of electron density,ion density,reduced electric field and electron impact ionization source term.The results show that the primary and secondary discharges on the HVE side and the GE side of the double-sided SDBD are composed of positive streamer and negative streamer,respectively.On the HVE side,the accumulation of positive charges on the dielectric surface causes the direction of the electric field to reverse,which is the principal factor for the polarity reversal of the streamer.On the GE side,both the negative charges accumulated on the dielectric surface and the falling voltage are the key factors for the streamer polarity switch. 展开更多

This paper is aimed at the streamers in natural esters (vegetable oils) in point--plane electrode arrangement under lightning impulse voltage. The shape, stopping length, velocity and current of streamers are investigated. Six untreated commercial oils extracted from grape seeds, sunflower and rape seeds, corn, rice and sesame that could constitute potential liquids for high voltage applications are tested. A naphthenic mineral oil is also tested for comparison. It's shown that the streamers are filamentary for both polarities. For a given voltage, the stopping lengths (Lf) of streamers are longer when the point is positive than when it is negative; also, except mineral oil when the point is negative, the values of Lf-are very close in all tested oils. The streamers' velocities are in the same range for all vegetable oils and they vary between 0.4 km/s and 1.2 km/s for positive polarity and 0.2 km/s and 0.8 km/s for negative polarity. 展开更多

The precise mathematical method was adopted to simulate the breakdown process of 5 mm rod and plate electrode gap,which was filled with supercritical nitrogen at the condition of 127 K,4 MPa and seed electron density 1×10^(6) m^(-3) under 29 kV DC voltage.The result shows that the discharge process was completed within 11.8 ns from seed electron triggering,avalanche bulking to streamer extending until gap eventually breakdown.The entire gap breakdown process was divided into three discharge stages,namely,the initial discharge triggered(0-4 ns),avalanche(4-7 ns)and streamer phase(7-11.8 ns).At the same time,the facts were also revealed that the discharge evolution,electric field distribution,and electron density had different values,and also showed different temporal and spatial distribution characteristics along the axis of the discharge gap.Specifically,the discharge characteristics of SCN2 under 1,2,3,4,4.5,and 5 MPa at 127 K were theoretically analyzed respectively,and the microscopic mechanisms of the breakdown process were also detailed.The results indicate that the gas discharge law remained applicable within the 1-3 MPa range.However,the discharge characteristics of supercritical nitrogen at 3.4-5 MPa differed significantly from those at lower pressures,likely attributable to the unique state of matter exhibited by supercritical nitrogen.This study contributes to understanding the discharge mechanism of supercritical nitrogen and offers theoretical guidance for its practical application in the power industry. 展开更多

Historically,streamer-to-leader transition studies mainly focused on the rod-plane gap and low altitude analysis,with limited attention paid to the sphere-plane gap at high altitude analysis.In this work,sphere-plane gap discharge tests were carried out under the gap distance of 5 m at the Qinghai Ultra High Voltage(UHV)test base at an altitude of 2200 m.The experiments measured the physical parameters such as the discharge current,electric field intensity and instantaneous optical power.The duration of the dark period and the critical charge of streamer-toleader transition were obtained at high altitude.Based on radial thermal expansion of the streamer stem,we established a modified streamer-to-leader transition model of the sphere-plane gap discharge at high altitude,and calculated the stem temperature,stem radii and the duration of streamer-to-leader transition.Compared with the measured duration of sphere-plane electrode discharge at an altitude of 2200 m,the error rate of the modified model was 0.94%,while the classical model was 6.97%,demonstrating the effectiveness of the modified model.From the comparisons and analysis,several suggestions are proposed to improve the numerical model for further quantitative investigations of the leader inception. 展开更多

Streamers represent an important stage in the initiation of gap discharge. In this work, we used an eight-frame intensified charge-coupled device camera to capture the streamer development process when a lightning impulse voltage of 95%–100% U50% was applied in a 3 m rod–plate gap and the streamer velocity was analyzed. Analysis of the observations shows that streamer velocity can be defined by three stages: rapid velocity decline(stage 1), rapid velocity rise(stage 2)and slow velocity decline(stage 3). The effects of electrode shape, applied voltage and gap breakdown or withstanding on streamer velocity were analyzed. The electrode with a larger radius of curvature will result in a higher initial velocity, and a higher voltage amplitude will cause the streamer to propagate faster at stage 3. Gap withstanding or breakdown has no obvious effect on streamer velocity. In addition, the experimental results are compared with previous results and the statistical characteristics of the primary streamer discharge are discussed. 展开更多

The development of a nanosecond discharge in a pin-to-pin gap filled with air at atmospheric pressure has been studied with high temporal and spatial resolutions from a breakdown start to the spark decay.Positive and negative nanosecond voltage pulses with an amplitude of tens of kilovolts were applied.Time-resolved images of the discharge development were taken with a fourchannel Intensified Charge Coupled Device(ICCD)camera.The minimum delay between the camera channels could be as short as≈0.1 ns.This made it possible to study the gap breakdown process with subnanosecond resolution.It was observed that a wide-diameter streamer develops from the high-voltage pointed electrode.The ionization processes near the grounded pin electrode started when the streamer crossed half of the gap.After bridging the gap by the streamer,a diffuse discharge was formed.The development of spark leaders from bright spots on the surface of the pointed electrodes was observed at the next stage.It was found that the rate of development of the spark leader is an order of magnitude lower than that of the wide-diameter streamer.Long thin luminous tracks were observed against the background of a discharge plasma glow.It has been established that the tracks are adjacent to brightly glowing spots on the electrodes and are associated with the flight of small particles. 展开更多

The dynamics of negative surface discharges in c-C_(4)F_(8)/CF_(3)I/CO_(2) gas mixture is investigated here with a 2D fuid model.The distributions of ion concentration,electric field strength and photon flux during the propagation of the streamer are obtained by solving the drift-diffusion equations of particles and Poisson's equation,and the photon flux variation function during the propagation is also fitted.It is found that the streamer branches occur when the streamer transitions from the upper surface of the insulator to the side surface,and then when the streamer approaches the plane electrode,the photon flux will increase significantly.On this basis,the positive and negative surface discharge models are compared in terms of streamer characteristics,particle characteristics and streamer branches.It is found that the streamer has a higher electron concentration and electric field in the positive model.The streamer develops“floating”in the positive surface discharge,while it is close to the surface of the insulator in the negative model.In addition,the negative streamer branch has a wider width and develops further. 展开更多

传统基于遥感的雾检测方法,主要利用极轨卫星遥感影像(如MODIS、AVHRR)建立雾检测模型,尽管极轨卫星影像的光谱信息丰富,但是其过境时间一般比较迟,MODIS为当地时间11点左右,AVHRR为当地时间14时左右,而且单颗极轨卫星的时间分辨率为一... 传统基于遥感的雾检测方法,主要利用极轨卫星遥感影像(如MODIS、AVHRR)建立雾检测模型,尽管极轨卫星影像的光谱信息丰富,但是其过境时间一般比较迟,MODIS为当地时间11点左右,AVHRR为当地时间14时左右,而且单颗极轨卫星的时间分辨率为一天左右,无法很好地满足雾检测的实际需要。针对静止卫星的雾检测研究还比较少,其主要思想是利用光谱差异进行雾检测。选择FY2E影像并结合面向对象思想开展白天雾检测研究,利用Streamer辐射传输模型针对云、雾、雪、地表对FY2E影像的5个波段进行模拟,构建雪检测指数(SDI)、雾检测指数(FDI)等6个雾检测特征参数;选择特征波段,利用Mean Shift分割方法完成FY2E影像的分割,基于雾检测特征参数构建雾检测区域特征参数;建立白天雾检测模型,选择案例数据进行实验,并利用地面站点实测数据进行精度评定。实验结果表明,提出的雾检测模型取得了很好的检测效果。 展开更多

Receiver ghost reflections adversely affect variable-depth streamer (VDS) data acquisition. In addition, the frequency notches caused by the interference between receiver ghosts and primary waves strongly affect seismic data processing and imaging. We developed a high-resolution Radon transform algorithm and used it to predict receiver ghosts from VDS data. The receiver ghost reflections are subtracted and removed from the raw data. We propose a forward Radon transform operator of VDS data in the frequency domain and, based on the ray paths of the receiver ghosts, we propose an inverse Radon transform operator. We apply the proposed methodology to model and field data with good results. We use matching and subtracting modules of commercially available seismic data processing software to remove the receiver ghosts. The frequency notches are compensated and the effective frequency bandwidth of the seismic data broadens. 展开更多
