Assessment of Quicklime and Aluminum Sulfate for pH Neutralization and Organic Matter Reduction in Dug Well Water in Jongaya,Indonesia

Dug well water in the working area of the Jongaya Community Health Center often fails to meet clean water quality standards due to low pH(6.1)and high organic matter content(14 mg/L),exceeding the limits set by Indonesian Ministry of Health Regulation No.32 of 2017,which poses a risk of digestive disorders and skin diseases.Addressing this gap,this study evaluates the effectiveness of quicklime(CaO)and aluminum sulfate[Al_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)]in improving dug well water quality through a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design.Water samples were purposively collected from contaminated wells and treated using quicklime,aluminum sulfate,and their combination at doses of 1 g,10 g,and 20 g,each replicated three times,with pH and organic matter content measured before and after treatment and analyzed using a paired t-test.Results showed that 1 g of CaO significantly increased pH from 6.1 to 7.88(p<0:05),meeting the clean water quality threshold(≥6:5),while 20 g of Al_(2)(_(S)O_(4))_(3)reduced organic matter content from 170.91 mg/L to 126.11 mg/L,and the combined treatment achieved the best outcome,with a 46.75%reduction in organic matter and a pH increase to 8.63,both meeting standards.All treatments were statistically significant(p<0:05),indicating that CaO and Al_(2)(SO_(4))_(3)are effective for improving dug well water quality in at-risk communities.The findings highlight the urgency of promoting proper application and optimal dosing,supported by long-term monitoring,and provide novel evidence on the combined use of these chemicals for addressing a local public health challenge. 展开更多

In this study, it is attempted to give an insight into the injection processability of three self-prepared polymers from A to Z. This work presents material analysis, injection molding simulation, design of ex- periments alongside considering all interaction effects of controlling parameters carefully for green biodegradable polymeric systems, including polylactic acid (PLA), polylactic acid-thermoplastic poly- urethane (PLA-TPU) and polylactic acid-thermoplastic starch (PLA-TPS). The experiments were carried out using injection molding simulation software Autodesk Moldflov~~ in order to minimize warpage and volumetric shrinkage for each of the mentioned systems. The analysis was conducted by changing five significant processing parameters, including coolant temperature, packing time, packing pressure, mold temperature and melt temperature. Taguchi's [.27 (35) orthogonal array was selected as an efficient method for design of simulations in order to consider the interaction effects of the parameters and reduce spu- rious simulations. Meanwhile, artificial neural network (ANN) was also used for pattern recognition and optimization through modifying the processing conditions. The Taguchi coupled analysis of variance (ANOVA) and ANN analysis resulted in definition of optimum levels for each factor by two completely different methods. According to the results, melting temperature, coolant temperature and packing time had significant influence on the shrinkage and warpage. The ANN optimal level selection for minimiza- tion of shrinkage and/or warpage is in good agreement with ANOVA optimal level selection results. This investigation indicates that PLA-TPU compound exhibits the highest resistance to warpage and shrink- age defects compared to the other studied compounds. 展开更多

How nutritional conditions during early development affect an organism’s phenotype at adulthood is still poorly understood despite a plethora of research on developmental plasticity.The"environmental matching"hypothesis predicts that individuals will have high fitness providing that their adult environment"matches"what they experienced during development.In contrast,the"silver spoon"hypothesis predicts that individuals who obtain better developmental resources will be generally superior.Here we tested these two hypotheses and examined the underlying hormonal mechanisms by manipulating the early dietary protein content of African clawed frogs(Xenopus laevis)for a year with a 2×2 factorial experimental design.We found that only a lowprotein food during development enhanced the vocal competition ability of male X.laevis,and that vocal dominance was associated with higher cortisol levels but not related with testosterone content.These results were not congruent with the"environmental matching"hypothesis or with the"silver spoon"hypothesis,suggesting the behavioral plasticity during development is more complex than our expectation in amphibians. 展开更多

Recycling of junks is positive for the environmental protection.Along with the proposal of three-child policy,purchase volume of milk powder surely will experience a drastic growth,and the milk powder spoon as an affiliated product will win the attention of parents.Against the background of consumption upgrading,consumers have had higher requirements on the humanization and safety design of products.Most of milk powder spoons on the market are plastic,and the disposal of waste milk powder spoon has gradually become a burden for the environment.Based on the environment-friendly and developmental concept,and also the characteristics of infant development,this paper proposed the“in-one”design,applied color and tactile designs into the milk powder design,chose food grade silicone to make the milk powder spoon not only a spoon but also a baby teether toy,so as to expand the service life and functions of the product,meet the requirements of saving energy,protecting environment and developing circular economy,which also to some extent reduces the burden on environment brought by plastics,improves the efficiency of junk recycling,and meet the individualized needs of consumers. 展开更多

Experimental Research on the South-Pointing Loadstone Spoon(Sinan)

In the 1940s,Wang Zhenduo王振铎re-created the sinan司南(southpointing loadstone spoon)mentioned in ancient texts.However,subsequent researchers were unsuccessful in their attempts to replicate this design,resulting in longstanding questions over its feasibility.Loadstones with high natural remanent magnetization acquired today resemble the magnetism of those recorded in premodern Chinese documents.By simulating ancient stoneware processing techniques,a loadstone was cut and polished into a spoon shape.It was found that during the course of processing the loadstone spoon,demagnetization was negligible,while after completion,the internal magnetic field was rebalanced due to the change in shape,and the magnetic moment decreased slightly then stabilized for the long term.Experiments of this sort carried out by the author have testified to the enduring and reliable directivity of the resulting loadstone spoon.Paleo-magnetic research indicates that over the past two millennia the horizontal component of the geomagnetic field intensity in northern China underwent a clear M-shaped development.The level in the Qin and Han dynasties is approximately double that of the current day.Using a simulated ancient geomagnetic field,experiments have revealed that multiple methods,such as the“water floating method”and“hanging method,”could manifest a degree of geo-directivity.The comprehensive studies carried out demonstrate that the loadstone spoon is the most optimal among these diverse means for attaining magnetic directivity from the Pre-Qin period(before 221 BCE)to the Tang dynasty(618–907 CE)in view of the availability of loadstone,the state of the geomagnetic field,and existing knowledge and techniques。 展开更多

Results: After treatment, the S1 stage of sleep was shorter, whereas, S2, S3, and S4 stages of sleep and rapid eye movement sleep were longer than those before treatment (P〈0.05). Meanwhile, there was a significant difference in sleep pattern before and after treatment (P〈0.05). Conclusion: Electro-spoon needle can improve the symptoms of insomnia. 展开更多
