Sampling methods which consider spatial locations of statistical units are already used in agricultural and environmental contexts, while they have never been exploited for establishment surveys. However, the rapidly increasing availability of geo- referenced information about business units makes that possible. In business studies, it may indeed be important to take into account the presence of spatial autocorrelation or spatial trends in the variables of interest, in order to have more precise and efficient estimates. The opportunity of using the most innovative spatial sampling designs in business surveys, in order to produce samples that are well spread in space, is here tested by means of Monte Carlo experiments. For all designs, the Horvitz-Thompson estimator of the population total is used both with equal and unequal inclusion probabilities. The efficiency of sampling designs is evaluated in terms of relative RMSE and efficiency gain compared with designs ignoring the spatial information. Furthermore, an evaluation of spatially balancing samples is also conducted.展开更多

A good feature space coverage ensures accurate estimation of regression parameters, while spatial coverage contributes to effective spatial interpolation.First, we review several statistical and geometric SDs that mainly optimize the sampling pattern in a geographical space and illustrate the strengths and weaknesses of these SDs by considering spatial coverage, simplicity, accuracy, and efficiency. Furthermore, Latin hypercube sampling, which obtains a full representation of multivariate distribution in geographical space, is described in detail for its development, improvement, and application. In addition, we discuss the fuzzy k-means sampling, response surface sampling, and Kennard-Stone sampling, which optimize sampling patterns in a feature space. We then discuss some practical applications that are mainly addressed by the conditioned Latin hypercube sampling with the flexibility and feasibility of adding multiple optimization criteria. We also discuss different methods of validation, an important stage of DSM, and conclude that an independent dataset selected from the probability sampling is superior for its free model assumptions. For future work, we recommend: 1) exploring SDs with both good spatial coverage and feature space coverage; 2) uncovering the real impacts of an SD on the integral DSM procedure;and 3) testing the feasibility and contribution of SDs in three-dimensional(3 D) DSM with variability for multiple layers.展开更多

In order to harvest a large quantity of straw in a short period on the small-scale lands of China, basic requirements on the knotters are summarized. Mathematical model of the knotter is also determined uniquely. Furthermore, the ^-type-knots knotter equipped on the Chinese square baler to form the ~ type knots is designed. Knotting rate experiments of the qb-type-knots knotter on the test bench and in the wheat/maize straws covered fields are carried out to check the knotting performances of the knotter. The parameters of the formed knots are also tested. The experiments results show that the knotting rate of the qb-type-knots knotter reaches 100.0% on the test bench without straws, while reaches 99.6% in the wheat straws covered field and 100.0% in the maize straws covered field. The average maximum force in the knotting process is 194.7 N in the lab experiment. The length out of the knots formed in lab is 15.9%-20.6% lower than the knots formed in the field experiment. The breaking force of the knots formed in the field is 115.9%-167.2% higher than the knots formed in lab due to the higher preload and interactions with the compacted bales. Highly relevant relationships exist between the breaking force of the formed knots and the maximum force in the forming process of the knots in the lab experiment. The designed knotter breaks out the embarrassing situation of the domestic knotters which don't have independent intellectual property rights, and promotes the development of Chinese knotter technology, and the mathematical model is helpful for designing new type of knotters.展开更多

The control of CSBs represents a challenging and unique problem, with many complexities in modeling, control design and implementation, since the control system should be designed not only to mitigate the dynamic component of the structural response but also to counteract the effects of the pseudo-static component of the response. The spatial variability effects on the feasibility and efficiency of seismic control systems for the vibration control of CSBs are investigated in this paper. The assumption of uniform earthquake motion along the entire bridge may result in quantitative and qualitative differences in seismic response as compared with those produced by uniform motion at all supports. A systematic comparison of passive and active system performance in reducing the structural responses is performed, focusing on the effect of the spatially varying earthquake ground motion on the seismic response of a benchmark CSB model with different control strategies, and demonstrates the importance of accounting for the spatial variability of excitations.展开更多
