Curved beams with complex geometries are vital in numerous engineering applications, where precise vibration analysis is crucial for ensuring safe and effective designs.Traditional finite element methods(FEMs) often struggle to accurately represent the dynamic characteristics of these structures due to the limitations in their shape function approximations. To overcome this challenge, the current study introduces an innovative finite element(FE)-based technique for the undamped vibrational analysis of curved beams with arbitrary curvature, employing explicitly derived interpolation functions.Initially, the exact interpolation functions are developed for circular are elements with the force method. These functions facilitate the creation of a highly accurate stiffness matrix, which is validated against the benchmark examples. To accommodate arbitrary curvature,a systematic transformation technique is established to approximate the intricate curves with a series of circular arcs. The numerical findings indicate that increasing the number of arc segments enhances accuracy, approaching the exact solutions. The analysis of free vibrations is conducted for both circular and non-circular beams.Mass matrices are derived using two methods:lumped mass and consistent mass, where the latter is based on the interpolation functions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed through the comparisons with the existing literature, demonstrating strong agreement. Finally, several practical cases involving beams with diverse curvature profiles are analyzed. Both natural frequencies and mode shapes are determined, providing significant insights into the dynamic behavior of these structures. This research offers a dependable and efficient analytical framework for the vibrational analysis of complex curved beams, with promising implications for structural and mechanical engineering. 展开更多

Sudden and unforeseen seismic failures of coal mine overburden(OB)dump slopes interrupt mining operations, cause loss of lives and delay the production of coal.Consideration of the spatial heterogeneity of OB dump materials is imperative for an adequate evaluation of the seismic stability of OB dump slopes. In this study,pseudo-static seismic stability analyses are carried out for an OB dump slope by considering the material parameters obtained from an insitu field investigation.Spatial heterogeneity is simulated through use of the random finite element method(RFEM)and the random limit equilibrium method(RLEM)and a comparative study is presented.Combinations of horizontal and vertical spatial correlation lengths were considered for simulating isotropic and anisotropic random fields within the OB dump slope.Seismic performances of the slope have been reported through the probability of failure and reliability index. It was observed that the RLEM approach overestimates failure probability(P_(f))by considering seismic stability with spatial heterogeneity. The P_(f)was observed to increase with an increase in the coefficient of variation of friction angle of the dump materials.Further,it was inferred that the RLEM approach may not be adequately applicable for assessing the seismic stability of an OB dump slope for a horizontal seismic coefficient that is more than or equal to 0.1. 展开更多

This article presents a micro-structure tensor enhanced elasto-plastic finite element(FE)method to address strength anisotropy in three-dimensional(3D)soil slope stability analysis. The gravity increase method(GIM)is employed to analyze the stability of 3D anisotropic soil slopes. The accuracy of the proposed method is first verified against the data in the literature. We then simulate the 3D soil slope with a straight slope surface and the convex and concave slope surfaces with a 90turning corner to study the 3D effect on slope stability and the failure mechanism under anisotropy conditions.Based on our numerical results, the end effect significantly impacts the failure mechanism and safety factor.Anisotropy degree notably affects the safety factor, with higher degrees leading to deeper landslides. For concave slopes, they can be approximated by straight slopes with suitable boundary conditions to assess their stability.Furthermore,a case study of the Saint-Alban test embankment A in Quebec,Canada,is provided to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed FE model. 展开更多

The incorporation of graphene fillers into polymer matrices has been recognized for its potential to enhance thermal conductivity, which is particularly beneficial for applications in thermal management. The uniformity of graphene dispersion is pivotal to achieving optimal thermal conductivity, thereby directly influencing the effectiveness of thermal management, including the mitigation of local hot-spot temperatures. This research employs a quantitative approach to assess the distribution of graphene fillers within a PBX(plastic-bonded explosive)matrix, focusing specifically on the thermal management of hot spots.Through finite element method(FEM)simulations,we have explored the impact of graphene filler orientation, proximity to the central heat source, and spatial clustering on heat transfer. Our findings indicate that the strategic distribution of graphene fillers can create efficient thermal conduction channels, which significantly reduce the temperatures at local hot spots. In a model containing 0.336%graphene by volume, the central hot-spot temperature was reduced by approximately 60 K compared to a pure PBX material, under a heat flux of 600 W/m^(2).This study offers valuable insights into the optimization of the spatial arrangement of low-concentration graphene fillers, aiming to improve the thermal management capabilities of HMX-based PBX explosives. 展开更多

Based on the theory of Timoshenko and thin-walled beams, a new finite element model of spatial thin-walled beams with general open cross sections is presented in the paper, in which several factors are included such as lateral shear deformation, warp generated by nonuni- form torsion and second-order shear stress, coupling of flexure and torsion, and large displacement with small strain. With an additional internal node in the element, the element stiffness matrix is deduced by incremental virtual work in updated Lagrangian (UL) formulation. Numerical examples demonstrate that the presented model well describes the geometrically nonlinear property of spatial thin-walled beams. 展开更多

The temperature and stress profiles of porous cubic Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy grids by additive manufacturing via electron beam melting(EBM)based on finite element(FE)method were investigated.Three-dimensional FE models were developed to simulate the single-layer and five-layer girds under annular and lateral scanning. The results showed that the molten pool temperature in five-layer girds was higher than that in single-layer grids owing to the larger mass and higher heat capacity.More energies accumulated by the longer scanning time for annular path than lateral path led to the higher temperature and steeper temperature gradient. The thermal stress drastically fluctuated during EBM process and the residual stress decreased with the increase of powder layer where the largest stress appeared at the first layer along the build direction. The stress under lateral scanning was slightly larger but relatively more homogeneous distribution than those under annular scanning. The stress distribution showed anisotropy and the maximum Von Mises stress occurred around the central node. The stress profiles were explained by the temperature fields and grids structure. 展开更多

Beams and plates manufactured from laminates of composite materials have distinct advantages in a significant number of applications. However, the anisotropy arising from these materials adds a significant degree of complexity, and thus time, to the stress and deformation analyses of such components, even using numerical approaches such as finite elements. The analysis of composite laminate beams subjected to uniform extension, bending, and/or twisting loads was performed by a novel implementation of the usual finite element method. Due to the symmetric features of the deformations, only a thin slice of the beam to be analysed needs to be modelled. Conventional threedimensional solid finite elements were used for the structural discretization. The accurate deformation relationships were formulated and implemented through the coupling of nodal translational degrees of freedom in the numerical analysis. A sample solution for a rectangular composite laminate beam is presented to show the validity and accuracy of the proposed method. 展开更多

Vacuum electron beam brazing (VEBB) technology is used to realize this jointing with capillaries. Firstly 3D finite element analysis model is built in this paper according to this special structure. And then ANSYS finite element analysis software is used to analyze brazing temperature field at different brazing parameters. The calculation results show that the temperature field of simulation has good agreement with that measured by experiment, which proves dependence of the model built in this paper. Based on full scale model of 1-beam and end-plate welding assembly with medium plate, welding temperature field and residual stress were simulated, infrared thermometers were employed to measure the real-time temperature Jbr verification purposes. Results show that the measured thermal cycle curves match well with the simulation result. Simulation results of welding residual stress indicate that the values of longitudinal and transverse stress on the upper surface of the plate are higher than the normal stress; higher tensile stresses exist at the end of the web weld toes and in the central area of the flange weld toes. The dangerous zones are located at the central areas of weld toes of the flange welds and near weld toes of the web welds. 展开更多

In order to analyze the electrostatic field concerned with electrostatic proximity fuze problem using the available finite analysis software package, the technology to model the problem with a scale reduction object and boundary was presented. The boundary is determined by the maximum distance the sensor can detect. The object model is obtained by multiplying the terms in Poisson's equation with a scale reduction factor and the real value can be reconstructed with the same reverse process after software calculation. Using the finite element analysis program, the simulation value is close to the theoretical value with a little error. The boundary determination and scale reduction method is suitable to modeling the irregular electrostatic field around air targets, such as airplane, missile and so on, which is based on commonly used personal computer (PC). The technology reduces the calculation and storage cost greatly. 展开更多

Bend stiffeners are designed to protect flexible risel against excessive bending at the connection with the hull. The structure is usually analyzed as a cantilever beam subjected to an inclined point load. As deflections are large and the bend stiffener material exhibits nonlinear stress-strain characteristics, geometric and material nonlinearities are important considerations. A new approach has been developed to solve this nonlinear problem. Its main advantage is its simplicity; in fact the present method can be easily implemented on a spreadsheet. Finite element analysis using ABAQUS is performed to validate the method. Solid elements are used for the bend stiffener and flexible pipe. To simulate the near inextensibility of flexible risers, a simple and original idea of using truss elements is proposed. Through a set of validation studies the present method is found to be in a good agreement with the finite element analysis. Further, parametric studies are performed by using both methods to identify the key parameters and phenomena that are most critical in design. The most important finding is that the common practice of neglecting the internal steel sleeve in the bend stiffener analysis is non-conservative and therefore needs to be reassessed. 展开更多

This work was to reveal the residual stress profile in electron beam welded Ti-6Al-4V alloy plates(50 mm thick) by using finite element and contour measurement methods.A three-dimensional finite element model of 50-mmthick titanium component was proposed,in which a column–cone combined heat source model was used to simulate the temperature field and a thermo-elastic–plastic model to analyze residual stress in a weld joint based on ABAQUS software.Considering the uncertainty of welding simulation, the computation was calibrated by experimental data of contour measurement method. Both test and simulated results show that residual stresses on the surface and inside the weld zone are significantly different and present a narrow and large gradient feature in the weld joint. The peak tensile stress exceeds the yield strength of base materials inside weld, which are distinctly different from residual stress of the thin Ti-6Al-4V alloy plates presented in references before. 展开更多

The nonlinear finite element(FE) analysis has been widely used in the design and analysis of structural or geotechnical systems. The response sensitivities(or gradients) to the model parameters are of significant importance in these realistic engineering problems. However the sensitivity calculation has lagged behind, leaving a gap between advanced FE response analysis and other research hotspots using the response gradient. The response sensitivity analysis is crucial for any gradient-based algorithms, such as reliability analysis, system identification and structural optimization.Among various sensitivity analysis methods, the direct differential method(DDM) has advantages of computing efficiency and accuracy, providing an ideal tool for the response gradient calculation. This paper extended the DDM framework to realistic complicated soil-foundation-structure interaction(SFSI) models by developing the response gradients for various constraints, element and materials involved. The enhanced framework is applied to three-dimensional SFSI system prototypes for a pilesupported bridge pier and a pile-supported reinforced concrete building frame structure, subjected to earthquake loading conditions. The DDM results are verified by forward finite difference method(FFD).The relative importance(RI) of the various material parameters on the responses of SFSI system are investigated based on the DDM response sensitivity results. The FFD converges asymptotically toward the DDM results, demonstrating the advantages of DDM(e.g.,accurate,efficient,insensitive to numerical noise).Furthermore, the RI and effects of the model parameters of structure, foundation and soil materials on the responses of SFSI systems are investigated by taking advantage of the sensitivity analysis results. The extension of DDM to SFSI systems greatly broaden the application areas of the d gradient-based algorithms,e.g.FE model updating and nonlinear system identification of complicated SFSI systems. 展开更多

The basic principle of corrode groove on outside of steel pipe during storage was analyzed in this paper, namely the water film on the contacted surface of steel pipe, which gathered from humidity in the air, rain or gel, and the suspended particles in air, and the corrosive composition, such as SO2, CO2, O2 and NaCI, in addition to the inhomogeneity of the organization and composition, which lead to the corrosion cell reaction, so that cause the corrosion initial from the contact surface of the between steel pipes, so as to form the corrosion groove. At the same time, the corrosion groove with depth of 0.125t (t pipe wall thickness) on the pipe of φ 1016 mm×21 mm ×70 API SPEC 5L was simulated using the FEM (finite element method), and the stress and strain distribution of the defect area near corrosion groove were solved at the inner pressure of 12 MPa, 10 MPa, 8 MPa, 6 MPa, 4 MPa and 2 MPa, respectively, which showed that no matter the pressure values were, the maximum stress and strain were lied at the bottom of corrosion defects groove and were in good linear relationship with the internal pressure increasing from 2 MPa to 6 MPa. When the internal pres- sures were greater than 6 MPa, they felled into the nonlinear model and to be yielded or even to be destroyed. In addition, the residual strength and the limit operation pressure of the corrode pipe with the defects groove of 0.125t were calculated or simulated according to the theoretical calculation, the finite element method based on the stress, the finite element method based on strain, DNV-RP-F101, ASME B31G and experimental methods respectively. The results showed that the residual strength and the limit operation pressure of the defective parts solved by the finite element method based on stress were 424 MPa, and 15.34 MPa, respectively, which was very close to that of experimental method, the residual strength was 410 MPa and the limit operation pressure 14.78 MPa. Besides, the results also showed that it was feasible and effective to simulate the residual strength of the structure with corrosion defects using the finite element method. 展开更多

A three-dimensional finite-element model (FEM) used for calculating electron beam (EB) welding temperature and stresses fields of thin plates of BT20 titanium has been developed in which the nonlinear thermophysical and thermo-mechanical properties of the material has been considered. The welding temperature field, the distributions of residual stresses in as-welded (AW) and electron beam local post-weld heat treatment (EBLPWHT) conditions have been successfully simulated. The results show that: (1) In the weld center, the maximum magnitude of residual tensile stresses of BT20 thin plates of Ti alloy is equal to 60%- 70% of its yield strength σs. (2) The residual tensile stresses in weld center can be even decreased after EBLPWHT and the longitudinal tensile stresses are decreased about 50% compared to joints in AW conditions. (3) The numerical calculating results of residual stresses by using FEM are basically in agreement with the experimental results. Combined with numerical calculating results, the effects of electron beam welding and EBLPWHT on the distribution of welding residual stresses in thin plates of BT20 have been analyzed in detail. 展开更多
