The results are as follows. 1) The sown areas of winter wheat in the 11 cities in the Hebei Plain all shrunk during the study period. The shrinkage rate was 16.07% and the total shrinkage area amounted to 49.62×10^4 ha. The shrinkage was most serious in the Bei- jing-Tianjin-Tangshan metropolitan agglomerate, with a shrinkage rate of 47.23%. 2) The precipitation fill rate of winter wheat was only 20%-30%, while those of spring maize and summer maize both exceeded 50%. The irrigation water resources demanded by the winter wheat-summer maize double cropping system ranged from 400 mm to 530 mm, while those demanded by the spring maize single cropping system ranged only from 160 mm to 210 ram. 3) The water resources conserved as a result of the winter wheat sown area shrinkage during the study period were about 15.96×10^8 m^3/a, accounting for 27.85% of those provided for Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei by the first phase of the Mid-Route of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project.展开更多

The results indicated that significant difference on some quality characteristics of experimental wheat varieties were observed from different locations and different years. The results also showed: protein content was positively correlated with wet gluten content, falling number, the average day temperature and sunshine hours from heading to maturation; and negatively correlated with the growing days and the average diurnal temperature difference from sowing to maturation; wet gluten content was positively correlated with the average day temperature and sunshine hours during the same period. Sedimentation value and falling number were positively correlated with the average sunshine hours from sowing to maturation. The basic way of wheat production in Tibet was as follows: mainly developing medium gluten wheat varieties, suitably planting weak gluten wheat varieties, introducing some inland excellent varieties.展开更多

An integrated model to dynamically simulate future changes in sown areas of four major crops (rice, maize, wheat and soybean) on a global scale is pre- sented. To do so, a crop choice model was developed on the basis of Multinomial Logit (Logit) model to model land users' decisions on crop choices among a set of available alternatives with using a crop utility function. A GIS-based Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model was adopted to simulate the crop yields under a given geophysical environment and farming management conditions, while the International Food Policy and Agricultural Simulation (IFPSIM) model was utilized to estimate crop price in the international market. The crop choice model was linked with the GIS-based EPIC model and the IFPSIM model through data exchange. This integrated model was then validated against the FAO statistical data in 2001-2003 and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) global land cover product in 2001. Both validation approaches indicated reliability of the model for ad- dressing the dynamics in agricultural land use and its capability for long-term scenario analysis. Finally, the model application was designed to run over a time period of 30 a, taking the year 2000 as baseline. The model outcomes can help understand and explain the causes, locations and consequences of land use changes, and provide support for land use planning and policy making.展开更多

Traditionally, peanuts are sown as shelled seeds;however, systematic research on the agronomic performance and yield potential of planting with shells remains limited. In this study, we present a novel approach—peanut sowing with shells(P-S-S)—that promotes plant growth, enhances root development, and increases yield. This method also improves seed quality and elevates protein and oil content. Field trials conducted in the Huang-Huai-Hai region and northeastern China demonstrate the technique's broad adaptability, resulting in an average yield increase of 12.9%, with gains reaching up to 41% in northeastern areas, even under a 20% reduction in seeding rate. We have refined a standardized planting protocol for P-S-S based on the principle of “Two Reductions and Two Increases”: reduced input costs and post-harvest losses, along with increased production and economic benefits. This innovation contributes significantly to the advancement of peanut cultivation practices in China.展开更多
