As the development of new power systems accelerates and the impacts of high renewable energy integration and extreme weather intensify,grid-alternative energy storage is garnering increasing attention for its grid-int...As the development of new power systems accelerates and the impacts of high renewable energy integration and extreme weather intensify,grid-alternative energy storage is garnering increasing attention for its grid-interaction benefits and clear business models.Consequently,assessing the value of grid-alternative energy storage in the systemtransition has become critically important.Considering the performance characteristics of storage,we propose a value assessment frame-work for grid-alternative energy storage,quantifying its non-wires-alternative effects from both cost and benefit perspectives.Building on this,we developed a collaborative planning model for energy storage and transmission grids,aimed at maximizing the economic benefits of storage systems while balancing investment and operational costs.The model considers regional grid interconnections and their interactions with system operation.By participating in system operations,grid-alternative energy storage not only maximizes its own economic benefits but also generates social welfare transfer effects.Furthermore,based on multi-regional interconnected planning,grid-alternative energy storage can reduce system costs by approximately 35%,with the most significant changes observed in generation costs.Multi-regional coordinated planning significantly enhances the sys-tem’s flexibility in regulation.However,when the load factor of interconnection lines between regions remains constant,system operational flexibility tends to decrease,leading to a roughly 28.9%increase in storage investment.Additionally,under regional coordinated planning,the greater the disparity in wind power integration across interconnected regions,the more noticeable the reduction in system costs.展开更多

A healthy ecosystem depends on the coordination of ecosystem structure and function.The coordination among ecosystem components,however,is seldom taken into account in current ecosystem health assessments(EHA).Neglect...A healthy ecosystem depends on the coordination of ecosystem structure and function.The coordination among ecosystem components,however,is seldom taken into account in current ecosystem health assessments(EHA).Neglect of such coordination may lead to large degrees of uncertainty in EHA and fail to support ecosystem management.We propose an approach to quantify the level of dynamic mismatching between ecosystem structure and function and the impact on ecosystem health by incorporating the ecosystem coordination index into EHA.The coordination degree is calculated using variation coefficient of six proxies for ecosystem structure and functions.The ecosystem at Jiaozhou Bay,as a microcosm of China's coast,has been documented to fluctuate from healthy to unhealthy status over the past three decades.The results indicate that there is a 3%-17% lower health level than that calculated by common methods used in the literature,indicating that the health of Jiaozhou Bay has become worse than expected.Habitat change contributes 20%-52% to ecosystem mismatches and is the most uncoordinated factor.Mismatch-related declines account for approximately one-fourth of the total ecological declines.Restoration scenarios that aim to resolve ecosystem mismatches could increase efficiency by about 50% compared to restoration scenarios that do not consider mismatches.This study investigates ecological declines in a coastal bay due to 30 years of rapid economic development.In doing so,this study provides novel insights and enhances our understanding of the reasons for failure in ecological restoration.展开更多

The system behavior of a protection sys...New strategies and methods for assessing the security of protection systems to reduce the risk of unnecessary disturbances and blackouts are the main topic of the present paper. The system behavior of a protection system and network is analyzed and assessed as a whole. Hence, the established algorithms are capable to handle complex network structures with regard to an intelligent data management as well as data validation. Protection security assessment comprised two different aspects: on the one hand the behavior regarding dependability and security in terms of speed and sensitivity, on the other hand the behavior regarding the response on dynamic network phenomena as voltage stability and transient stability. A new automated method for assessing the dependability and security of protection systems is shown. The short-circuit simulation tool is used to provide a simulation system including network and protection devices as a whole. The handling of the large amount of resulting data is done by an intelligent visualization method like a “fingerprint” analysis. Further on the paper is focused on the protection response on dynamic network phenomena and presents innovative strategies for this investigation aspect. The structure of simulation environment will be described. Results of a case study show the application of this method on a real network. The system tool which is concluding these two aspects of protection assessment is called SIGUARD? PSA.展开更多
With the proliferation of advanced communication technologies and the deepening interdependence between cyber and physical components,power distribution networks are subject to miscellaneous security risks induced by ...With the proliferation of advanced communication technologies and the deepening interdependence between cyber and physical components,power distribution networks are subject to miscellaneous security risks induced by malicious attackers.To address the issue,this paper proposes a security risk assessment method and a risk-oriented defense resource allocation strategy for cyber-physical distribution networks(CPDNs)against coordinated cyber attacks.First,an attack graph-based CPDN architecture is constructed,and representative cyber-attack paths are drawn considering the CPDN topology and the risk propagation process.The probability of a successful coordinated cyber attack and incurred security risks are quantitatively assessed based on the absorbing Markov chain model and National Institute of Standards and Technology(NIST)standard.Next,a risk-oriented defense resource allocation strategy is proposed for CPDNs in different attack scenarios.The tradeoff between security risk and limited resource budget is formulated as a multi-objective optimization(MOO)problem,which is solved by an efficient optimal Pareto solution generation approach.By employing a generational distance metric,the optimal solution is prioritized from the optimal Pareto set of the MOO and leveraged for subsequent atomic allocation of defense resources.Several case studies on a modified IEEE 123-node test feeder substantiate the efficacy of the proposed security risk assessment method and risk-oriented defense resource allocation strategy.展开更多
