In this study, the effect of added manganese oxidemodified biochar composite(MBC) on methane production and heavy metal fractionation during sewage sludge AD was examined. The MBC could increase the buffering capacity, enhance the methane production and degradation of intermediate acids, buffer the pH of the culture, and stabilize the sewage sludge AD process. The application of MBC positively impacted methane production and the cumulative methane yield increased up to 121.97%,as compared with the control. The MBC addition can improve metal stabilization in the digestate. An optimum MBC dose of 2.36 g was recommended, which would produce up to 121.1 L/kg volatile solids of methane. After the AD process, even though most of the metals accumulated in the residual solids, they could be transformation from the bio-available fractions to a more stable fraction. The total organic-and sulfide-bound and residual fraction content at a 3 g dose of MBC that is 0.12 g/g dry matter were 51.06% and 35.11% higher than the control, respectively. The results indicated that the application of MBC could improve the performance of AD and promote stabilization of heavy metals in sewage sludge post the AD process.展开更多

Operation of the reactors using a sludge retention time(SRT) of 6 days and a pH of 5.0, resulted in the maintenance of stable biological activity as determined by soluble chemical oxygen demand(SCOD), volatile fatty acids(VFAs) production and oil removal efficiency. The optimum conditions for hydrogen production include a SRT of 8 days, at pH 6.5. Under these conditions, hydrogen production rates in the control containing only PREAS were 1567 mL/L(R0), compared with 1365 mL/L in Rl and 1454 mL/L-PREAS in R2.Coprothermobacter, Fervidobacterium, Caldisericum and Tepidiphilus were the dominant bacterial genera that have the potential to degrade petroleum compounds and generate VFAs. Bacterial phylogeny can shape the resistome in activated sludge. However, the co-occurrence and interaction of ARGs abundance and bacterial communities in different WWTPs located at continental scales are still not comprehensively understood. Here, we applied quantitative PCR and Miseq sequence approaches to unveil the changing profiles of ARGs(sul1, sul2, tet W, tet Q, tet X), int I1 gene, and bacterial communities in 18 geographically distributed WWTPs. The results showed that the average relative abundance of sul1 and sul2 genes were 2.08 × 10^(-1) and 1.32 × 10^(-1) copies/16 S rRNA copies, respectively. The abundance of tet W gene was positively correlated with the Shannon diversity index(H′), while both studied sul genes had significant positive relationship with the int I1 gene. The highest average relative abundances of sul1, sul2, tet X, and int I1 genes were found in south region and oxidation ditch system. Network analysis found that 16 bacterial genera co-occurred with tet W gene. Co-occurrence patterns were revealed distinct community interactions between aerobic/anoxic/aerobic and oxidation ditch systems. The redundancy analysis model plot of the bacterial community composition clearly demonstrated that the sludge samples were significant differences among those from the different geographical areas, and the shifts in bacterial community composition were correlated with ARGs. Together, these findings from the present study will highlight the potential risks of ARGs and bacterial populations carrying these ARGs, and enable the development of suitable technique to control the dissemination of ARGs from WWTPs into aquatic environments.展开更多

Currently, large amounts of sludge are produced every day, but sludge treatment is neither efficient nor profitable. To improve the sludge treatment process, we proposed the method of using microwave technology to treat sludge. We hypothesized that using microwave technology, we can reduce the volume of the sludge up to 90%, and can save more energy and time comparing to the traditional methods that we are currently using to treat the sludge. To prove our hypothesis, we designed an experiment to compare the solid-liquid boundary height and the solid-liquid mass ratio of the sludge treated by the conventional method and the microwave technology. Prime temperature and time found for dewatering sludge are 70 Celsius degrees and five minutes. The results were rather surprising, as microwave heating demonstrated no significant advantage over conventional heating. The solid-liquid boundary height of sludge heated by conventional and by microwave methods are 22.34 mL and 22.56 mL;the solid-liquid mass ratio of sludge using conventional heating and microwave heating at 70 Celsius degrees are 14.28% and 14.55% (by separation with filter press), or 9.82% and 9.89% (by centrifugation). In conclusion, the difference is negligible.展开更多

The results showed that the highest nutrient removal efficiencies were obtained in the reactor R^2 with soluble chemical oxygen demand(sC OD), ammonia nitrogen(NH_4^+-N) and phosphate(PO_4^(3-)-P) removal efficiencies of(90.6 ± 2.3)%,(97.69 ± 2.6)% and(83.81 ± 2.3)%, respectively. Further investigation exhibited that sludge concentration has a great effect on the dissolved oxygen(DO) concentration, the pH, the growth of algae and the extracellular polymeric substance(EPS) production, which resulted in influencing the settleability and the performance of symbiotic system. The denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis(DGGE) analysis demonstrated that the sludge concentration had a selective power for particular members of algae. Meantime, the stimulated algal population would selectively excite the members of bacteria benefited for the formation of algal-bacterial consortia. The variation of microbial compositions, which was influenced by the different sludge concentrations, might be ultimately responsible for the different treatment performances.展开更多

A review of the formation mechanism and basic properties of SSPS was made, and the technical features, advantages and limitations of a series of pyrometallurgical treatment processes were summarized. Based on these, the main challenges for recycling of SSPS through the existing techniques are demonstrated. The traditional pelletizing/sintering-blast furnace process can only be used as a partial solution. Direct use of SSPS as flux in an argon-oxygen decarburization converter or electric arc furnace is a promising way, but low S sludges are preferred. The STAR process shows excellent recovery for metals, but it also has a low tolerance to the S and F contents in SSPS. And theINMETCO process is highly flexible in treatment of various wastes, whereas it exhibits relatively low Cr recovery and produces poor-quality pig iron. In addition, the feasibility of the rotary kiln-electric furnace, solid -state reduction of chromite and reduction-magnetic separation processes requires further studies. An urgent task at present is to develop a system for scientific classification and separate collection of SSPS in terms of chemical composition, notably S and F contents.展开更多

The results showed the molecular weight distribution of organic matter extracted by centrifugation, heating and cation exchange resin(CER) was similar, while the EPS extracted by centrifugation(Control) and CER had similar fluorescent organic matter. The protein secondary structures of extracted EPS by the four methods were different. The similarities of protein secondary structures between the EPS extracted by CER with the Control were the highest among the four extracted EPS. Although the EPS yield extracted by formaldehyde + NaOH method were the highest, its protein secondary structures had the lowest similarity with those extracted by the Control. Additionally, the effects of centrifugation and CER extraction on the secondary structures of bovine serum albumin were also lower than that of other extraction processes. CER enables the second maximum extraction of EPS and maximum retention of the original secondary structure of proteins.展开更多

The results show that the addition of nitrite was feasible to increase the solubilization rate of the sludge and may reduce mass transfer limitation at the anode. This helped the MFC to reach higher voltage and to generate more power. The higher free nitrous acid(FNA) concentration under the acidic condition helped to increase sludge solubilization. However, under an alkaline condition, during which the FNA concentration was relatively low, the solubilization of the sludge was higher. The highest voltage and power density produced was 390 mV and 153 mW/m^2, respectively, with the addition of nitrite at 100 mg-N/L and pH 9. Furthermore,it was found that elevated levels of FNA could inhibit electrogenic bacteria thus reducing power generation.展开更多

Sewage sludge/biosolids are by-products of municipal and industrial wastewater treatment and a rich source of organic nutrients. Sewage sludge having high content of organic matter, macro- and micro-nutrients, can be used as fertilizer/soil conditioner for food, vegetable crop, horticultural plants and pasture, which in most cases can be beneficially recycled. In the past sewage sludge was regarded as a waste product due to expected high level of contaminants such as pathogens, pollutants and synthetic materials discharged in sewer from homes and industries, which were often incinerated, dumped in occasion or land fill. As a result of rapidly increasing population, urbanization and industrialization, wastewater production and sewage sludge generation have increased manifold. Due to high cost of mineral fertilizers and escalating trends in their prices, there is an increasing trend of using sewage sludge in agriculture, especially under intensive cropping in arid and semi arid regions of the country. Therefore, application of sewage sludge to agricultural soils may be sustainable and economical due to nutrient cycling and disposal of sewage sludge. However, there may be a risk in use of sewage sludge due to potentially harmful contents present in the sludge such as heavy metals and pathogens. This paper, therefore, presents a review on various aspects of sewage sludge used in agriculture.展开更多

These respirogram profiles reveal more information than effluent quality. A decrease of OUR_ x ^(20)is a critical alarm signal for the loss of pollutant removal capacity, and a sudden increase of the predicted value OUR_( x,cal)^(20)is an alarm signal for the unrecoverable deterioration of biomass. The sign of OUR_x^(20)–OUR_(x,cal)^(20)can be used for selection of tuning strategies. For example, a negative value of OUR_x^(20)–OUR_( x,cal)^(20)indicates that doubling biomass is difficult, thus strategies such as extending the reaction time with limited available biomass is preferred. The findings in this study elucidated the respiration profile of activated sludge under changes of temperature and can be effectively used for the stable operation of Wastewater Treatment Plants under cold temperatures and seasonal variations.展开更多

文摘Wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs) are deemed reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs). Together, these findings from the present study will highlight the potential risks of ARGs and bacterial populations carrying these ARGs, and enable the development of suitable technique to control the dissemination of ARGs from WWTPs into aquatic environments.

文摘The study aims to investigate uranium species in the sediments of the natural-technogenic system within a sludge storage facility in Russia. The relevance of this work is underscored by the need to assess the geochemical mobility of radionuclides,a critical factor for predicting their migration and environmental impact. The objective of the research was to determine the uranium species in both peat and sedimentary rock samples of the sludge storage facility and the adjacent area.Laboratory analyses included XRD,XRF analysis using synchrotron radiation, and scanning electron microscopy to study the composition and properties of minerals. The uranium species were further identified using a modified Tessier sequential extraction method. The results revealed that uranium predominantly occurs in a stable silicate-bound form(up to 80%)in sedimentary rocks, indicating minimal geochemical mobility. In contrast,in peat deposits, uranium is primarily associated with manganese and iron oxides(30–60%)as well as organic matter(5–40%),with the most mobile forms constituting less than 5%.The decrease in uranium concentration with distance from the facility was attributed to sorption onto organic matter and co-precipitation with mineral compounds, manganese and iron oxides, which serve as effective natural sorbents. The findings highlight the critical role of organic matter and metal oxides in limiting uranium migration, thus identifying them as key components in the formation of natural barriers for radionuclides. These results are crucial for assessing environmental risks associated with radioactive waste management and for developing strategies to minimize the ecological impact of sludge storages.
文摘The purpose of this research is to find a method that can improve the cost and efficiency of sludge treatment. In conclusion, the difference is negligible.
文摘This paper presents the technology and cost effectiveness of production of phosphate rich biofertiliser (called PROM) by bioconversion of phosphate rock ore into soluble phosphates (that are directly assimilable by plants) in presence of an organic manure such as Vermicompost or anaerobic digestor sludge (discharged from biogas manufacturing units) and using a microbial culture of Bacillus megatherium var phosphaticum. PROM has been found to be an excellent, less expensive, substitute to synthetic phosphatic fertilisers such as SSP, MAP and DAP. This is based on real—life field trials. It is also possible to integrate the production of PROM, with biogas generation and the layout of such a more profitable, integrated scheme is also presented in this paper.

文摘The organic compound composition ofwastewater, serves as a crucial indicator for the operational performance of activated sludge processes and has a major influence on the development of filamentous bulking in activated sludge. This study focused on the impact of typical soluble and slowly-biodegradable organic compounds, investigating the pathways through which these substrates affect the occurrence of filamentous bulking in systems operated under both high-and low-oxygen conditions. Results showed that slowly-biodegradable organic compounds lead to a concentrated distribution of microorganisms within flocs, with inward growth of filamentous bacteria. Both Tween-80 and granular starch treated systems exhibited a significant increase in protein content. The glucose system, utilizing soluble substrates, exhibited a markedly higher total polysaccharide content.Microbial communities in the Tween-80 and granular starch treated systems were characterized by a higher abundance of bacteria known to enhance sludge flocculation and settling, such as Competibacter,Xanthomonadaceae and Zoogloea. These findings are of high significance for controlling the operational performance and stability of activated sludge systems, deepening our understanding and providing a novel perspective for the improvement of wastewater treatment processes.

文摘It was focused on the effect of different sludge concentrations on the performances of an algal-activated sludge symbiotic system in terms of wastewater treatment, algal-activated sludge characteristics and community structure. The variation of microbial compositions, which was influenced by the different sludge concentrations, might be ultimately responsible for the different treatment performances.

文摘Quorum sensing(QS)regulation of the composition of ammonia-oxidising archaea(AOA)and ammonia-oxidising bacteria(AOB)communities and functions in wastewater treatment was investigated.Specifically,we explored the role of N-acyl-L-homoserine lactones(AHLs)in microbial community dynamics in activated sludge. On average, the specific ammoniaoxidising-rate increased from 1.6 to 2.8 mg NH_4^+-N/g MLSS/hr after treatment with long-chain AHLs for 16 days, and the addition of AHLs to sludge resulted in an increased number of AOA/AOB amoA genes.Significant differences were observed in the AOA communities of control and AHL-treated cultures, but not the AOB community.Furthermore, the dominant functional AOA strains of the Crenarchaeota altered their ecological niche in response to AHL addition. These results provide evidence that AHLs play an important role in mediating AOA/AOB microbial community parameters and demonstrate the potential for application of QS to the regulation of nitrogen compound metabolism in wastewater treatment.

文摘Stainless steel pickling sludge (SSPS), generated from the lime neutralization process of spent pickling liquor, is classified as a hazardous waste consisting of abundant metals like Fe, Cr and Ni, and other elements like F, S and Na, etc. Rather than a common disposal in landfill, recovering these metals and other valuable components from SSPS can not only create economic benefits, but also eliminate its adverse impacts on human health and the environment. An urgent task at present is to develop a system for scientific classification and separate collection of SSPS in terms of chemical composition, notably S and F contents.

文摘Enhancing sludge dewatering is of importance in reducing environmental burden and disposal costs. In this work, a cationic surfactant, cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide(CTAB), was combined with Fenton’s reagent for sludge dewatering. Results show that the Fenton-CTAB conditioning significantly promotes the sludge dewatering.Using combined techniques of response surface methodology and uniform design, dosages of Fe2+, H2O2, and CTAB for water content response were optimized to be 89, 276, and 233 mg/g dry solids(DS),respectively. The water content of sludge decreased from 79.0% to 66.8% under the optimal conditions.Compared with cationic polyacrylamide, the Fenton-CTAB system exhibited superior sludge dewatering performance. To gain insights into the mechanisms involved in sludge dewatering, the effects of Fenton-CTAB conditioning on the composition of extracellular polymeric substances(EPS) and the morphology of the sludge flocs were investigated. The decomposition of EPS into some dissolved organics and the release of proteins in tightly bound EPS facilitated the conversion of bound water to free water and further reduced the water content of sludge cake. After conditioning, morphology of sludge showed aggregation.Overall, the enhanced sludge dewatering by Fenton-CTAB treatment provides an efficient way for management of sewage sludge.

文摘The changes of protein secondary structures in the extracellular polymeric substances(EPS) extracted from activated sludge by four different methods were studied by analyzing the amide I region(1700–1600 cm-1) of the Fourier transform infrared spectra and model protein test. CER enables the second maximum extraction of EPS and maximum retention of the original secondary structure of proteins.

文摘The effect of pre-treatment of dewatered sludge using different nitrite concentrations and p H for microbial fuel cell(MFC) application was investigated. Furthermore,it was found that elevated levels of FNA could inhibit electrogenic bacteria thus reducing power generation.
文摘Intensive farming generally needs large addition of organic matter to maintain fertility and enhance crop yields. This paper, therefore, presents a review on various aspects of sewage sludge used in agriculture.

文摘Respirograms of activated sludge OUR_ x^Tand OUR_x^(20)were measured under site(T) and standard(20°C) temperatures, respectively, and the predicted standard temperature respirogram OUR_( x,cal)^(20)was also calculated using the Arrhenius equation. The findings in this study elucidated the respiration profile of activated sludge under changes of temperature and can be effectively used for the stable operation of Wastewater Treatment Plants under cold temperatures and seasonal variations.
