This study aimed to investigate the moment redistribution in continuous glass fiber reinforced polymer(GFRP)-concrete composite slabs caused by concrete cracking and steel bar yielding in the negative bending moment zone.An experimental bending moment redistribution test was conducted on continuous GFRP-concrete composite slabs, and a calculation method based on the conjugate beam method was proposed. The composite slabs were formed by combining GFRP profiles with a concrete layer and supported on steel beams to create two-span continuous composite slab specimens. Two methods, epoxy resin bonding, and stud connection, were used to connect the composite slabs with the steel beams. The experimental findings showed that the specimen connected with epoxy resin exhibited two moments redistribution phenomena during the loading process:concrete cracking and steel bar yielding at the internal support. In contrast, the composite slab connected with steel beams by studs exhibited only one-moment redistribution phenomenon throughout the loading process. As the concrete at the internal support cracked, the bending moment decreased in the internal support section and increased in the midspan section. When the steel bars yielded, the bending moment further decreased in the internal support section and increased in the mid-span section.Since GFRP profiles do not experience cracking, there was no significant decrease in the bending moment of the mid-span section. All test specimens experienced compressive failure of concrete at the mid-span section.Calculation results showed good agreement between the calculated and experimental values of bending moments in the mid-span section and internal support section. The proposed model can effectively predict the moment redistribution behavior of continuous GFRP-concrete composite slabs. 展开更多

Two-dimensional phononic crystal(PnC)slabs have shown advantages in enhancing the quality factors Q of piezoelectric laterally vibrating resonators(LVRs)through topology optimization. However, the narrow geometries of most topology-optimized silicon–air 2D PnC slabs face significant fabrication challenges owing to restricted etching precision, and the anisotropic nature of silicon is frequently overlooked. To address these issues, this study employs the finite element method with appropriate discretization numbers and the genetic algorithm to optimize the structures and geometries of 2D silicon–air PnC slabs. The optimized square-lattice PnC slabs, featuring a rounded-cross structure oriented along the`110e directions of silicon, achieve an impressive relative bandgap(RBG)width of 82.2%for in-plane modes. When further tilted by 15° from the (100) directions within the(001)plane,the optimal RBG width is expanded to 91.4%.We fabricate and characterize thin-film piezoelectric-on-silicon LVRs,with or without optimized 2D PnC slabs. The presence of PnC slabs around anchors increases the series and parallel quality factors Q_(s) and Q_(p) from 2240 to 7118 and from 2237 to 7501,respectively,with the PnC slabs oriented along the`110e directions of silicon. 展开更多

Crystal defects and morphological modifications are popular strategies to enhance the catalytic activity of heterogeneous semiconductor photocatalysts.Despite defect engineering and morphology control show their successful applications in ZnO,the effects of curved surface modifications on the photocatalytic performance of ZnO and their interplay with the defect formation remain unclear. To resolve this puzzle,we systemically investigate the joint effects of curvature and defect formation on the electronic structure, optoelectronic properties, and photocatalytic performance of ZnO slabs using first-principles calculations. We find that curvature deformation effectively narrows the electronic bandgap by up to 1.6 eV and shifts the p-/d-band centers, thereby enhancing light absorption in the visible and near-ultraviolet regions.Besides, curvature deformation stimulates self-polarization,facilitating the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes. Also, curvature deformation promotes the formation of defects by reducing defect formation energy(by up to 1.0 eV),thus creating abundant reaction sites for photocatalysis.Intriguingly, the synergistic interaction between curvature and defect deformation further strengthens the self-polarization,narrows the electronic bandgaps, adjusts the p-/d-band centers to improve the optoelectronic properties, and influences the dissociation and free energy barriers of intermediates.Consequently, our findings reveal that this synergy substantially enhances the photocatalytic performance of ZnO slabs, providing deeper insights into the role of defect engineering and morphology control on photocatalysis. 展开更多

With the change of the main influencing factors such as structural configuration and impact conditions, reinforced concrete slabs exhibit different mechanical behaviors with different failure patterns, and the failure modes are transformed. In order to reveal the failure mode and transformation rule of reinforced concrete slabs under impact loads,a dynamic impact response test was carried out using a drop hammer test device. The dynamic data pertaining to the impact force, support reaction force, structural displacement, and reinforcement strain were obtained through the use of digital image correlation technology(DIC),impact force measurement, and strain measurement. The analysis of the ultimate damage state of the reinforced concrete slab identified four distinct types of impact failure modes:local failure by stamping, overall failure by stamping,local-overall coupling failure, and local failure by punching.Additionally, the influence laws of hammerhead shape, hammer height, and reinforcement ratio on the dynamic response and failure mode transformation of the slab were revealed. The results indicate that:(1)The local damage to the slab by the plane hammer is readily apparent, while the overall damage by the spherical hammer is more pronounced.(2)In comparison to the high reinforcement ratio slabs, the overall bending resistance of the low reinforcement ratio slabs is significantly inferior, and the slab back exhibits further cracks.(3)As the hammer height increases, the slab failure mode undergoes a transformation, shifting from local failure by stamping and overall failure by stamping to local-overall coupling failure and local failure by punching.(4)Three failure mode thresholds have been established, and by comparing the peak impact force with the failure thresholds, the failure mode of the slab can be effectively determined. 展开更多

Fabry–Perot(FP)modes are a class of fundamental resonances in photonic crystal(PhC)slabs.Owing to their low quality factors,FP modes are frequently considered as background fields with their resonance nature being neglected.Nevertheless,FP modes can play important roles in some phenomena,as exemplified by their coupling with guided resonance(GR)modes to achieve bound states in the continuum(BIC).Here,we further demonstrate the genuine resonance mode capability of FP modes PhC slabs.Firstly,we utilize temporal coupled-mode theory to obtain the transmittance of a PhC slab based on the FP modes.Secondly,we construct exceptional points(EPs)in both momentum and parameter spaces through the coupling of FP and GR modes.Furthermore,we identify a Fermi arc connecting two EPs and discuss the far-field polarization topology. This work elucidates that the widespread FPs in PhC slabs can serve as genuine resonant modes, facilitating the realization of desired functionalities through mode coupling. 展开更多

Reinforced concrete(RC)slabs are the primary load-carrying member of underwater facilities. They can suffer severe local failures such as cratering, spalling,or breaching as a result of underwater close-in(UWCI)explosions.In this study,we established a fully validated high-fidelity finite element analysis approach to precisely reproduce the local failures of RC slabs after a UWCI explosion.A recently proposed dynamic constitutive model is used to describe wet concrete. The effects of free water content on the material properties, including the tensile/compressive strength, elastic modulus, strain rate effect, failure strength surface, and equation of state, are comprehensively calibrated based on existing test data. The calibrated material parameters are then verified by a single-element test.A high-fidelity finite element analysis(FEA)approach of an RC slab subjected to a UWCI explosion is established using an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian(ALE)algorithm.Simulating previous UWCI explosion tests on RC orifice targets and underwater contact explosion tests on saturated concrete slabs showed that the established FEA approach could accurately reproduce the pressure-time history in water and damage patterns, including the cracking, cratering, and spalling,of the RC orifice target and saturated concrete slab.Furthermore, parametric studies conducted by simulating an RC slab subjected to a UWCI explosion showed that:(i)the local failure of an RC slab enlarges with increased charge weight, reduced standoff distance, and reduced structural thickness;(ii)compared to a water-backed RC slab,an air-backed RC slab exhibits much more obvious local and structural failure.Lastly,to aid the anti-explosion design of relevant underwater facilities, based on over 90 simulation cases empirical formulae are summarized to predict local failure modes,i.e.,no spall, spall, and breach,of water-and air-backed RC slabs subjected to a UWCI explosion. 展开更多

In order to analyze the pavement stress caused by vehicle bumping at an approach slab, a simplified four-wheeled bi- axle vehicle-moving model is proposed. The effect of damping and vibration reduction in the process of vehicle-moving is not considered. Based on the position change of vehicle wheels at the approach slab, the vehicle dynamic vibration equations are summarized. Meanwhile, the undetermined coefficients of the vibration equations are obtained using the boundary and initial conditions of the vehicle. The analytical motion solutions of rear and front wheels at different stages are concluded. Consequently, a four-wheeled vehicle model is developed and vibration equations are provided, which can be used to analyze the impact of complicated stress on pavement. The results show that the excessive stress and stress concentration will occur at the approach slab, and it needs to be strengthened. 展开更多

As the first link element for the transmission of shaft vibration to the pedestal and even to the hull,water-lubricated bearing plays a key role in suppressing vibration.Although the porous structure is considered as one of the main methods for improving the wideband vibration and noise reduction performance of materials in many industrial fields, the studies in the field of water-lubricated bearing remain insufficient. To enhance vibration reduction performance,a fluid-saturated perforated slab is designed in this study, and via the establishment of a fluid-solid coupled vibration model, the influence law and impact levels were analyzed and verified by simulation and experiments. The results obtained verified that the total vibration amplitude of damping-enhanced stern bearing in the vertical direction was smaller than that of the normal stern bearing, and the reduction amplitude of the characteristic frequency agreed with the optimal value at approximately 0.1 of the volume fraction of the liquid phase when the solid-fluid phase was rubber–water.Additionally, the increase in fluid fraction did not enhance the damping effect, instead,it unexpectedly reduced the natural frequency of the raw material significantly. This research indicates that the design of the fluid-saturated perforated slab is effective in reducing the transmission of the vibration amplitude from the shaft, and presents the best volume fraction of the liquid phase. 展开更多

A 3D viscoelastic-plastic thermal-mechanical coupled finite element model was built on the basis of the secondary development of the commercial software MSC.Marc. Numerical simulations were performed to study slab broadening in the secondary cooling zone. The effects of slab width and thickness on slab broadening were considered. The obtained results reveal that the width broadening is noticeable, and the ratio of ultimate broadening slightly increases with the increase of slab width. This agrees well with the measured data in practice. There is no obvious increase in ultimate broadening when the thickness of slabs increases. 展开更多

When an explosion occurs close to or partially within the face of a concrete structure, fragments are rapidly launched from the opposite face of the structure owing to concrete spalling, posing a significant risk to nearby personnel and equipment. To study the lead fragment velocity of ultra-high-performance concrete(UHPC), partially embedded explosion experiments were performed on UHPC slabs of limited thickness using a cylindrical trinitrotoluene charge. The launch angles and velocities of the resulting fragments were the determined using images collected by high-speed camera to document the concrete spalling and fragment launching process. The results showed that UHPC slabs without fiber reinforcement had a fragment velocity distribution of 0-118.3 m/s, which are largely identical to that for a normal-strength concrete(NSC) slab. In addition, the fragment velocity was negatively correlated to the angle between the velocity vector and vertical direction. An empirical Eq. for the lead spall velocity of UHPC and NSC slabs was then proposed based on a large volume of existing experimental data. 展开更多

Two-way concrete slabs are widely used around the world for the construction of many types of infrastructures and common buildings. The optimal sensor placement(OSP) in slabs with various opening positions is the most important issue in structural health monitoring(SHM) to increase reliability. In this study, a novel approach of OSP was evaluated to obtain the number and placement of sensors using examination of the closed loop performance. The nonlinear finite element(NFE) was used to discretize the mechanism behavior of slab. Multi-Objective Optimization based on the coordinate modal assurance criterion(COMAC) and cost considerations was considered in the optimization processes. All of the analysis, discretization and optimization process was designed and developed as a novel approach in Matlab by the author under the name ‘FEMS-COMAC’(FEM analysis of slab with COMAC). The points in the finite element method(FEM) mesh were classified as line by line information along the slab. The OSP in each line was optimized according to the objective function. The slabs with various width, thickness, aspect ratio and opening position were selected as case studies. The results of the OSP using the COMAC algorithm around the slab openings were compared with the novel ‘FEMS-COMAC’ method. The statistical analysis according Mann-Whitney criteria shows that there were significant differences between them in some of the case studies(mean P-value=0.54). 展开更多

In this paper,UR50 ultra-early-strength cement-based self-compacting high-strength concrete slabs(URCS)have been subjected to contact explosion tests with different TNT charge quality, aiming to evaluate the anti-explosive performance of URCS.In the experiment, three kinds of ultra-early-strength cement-based reinforced concrete slabs with different reinforcement ratios and a normal concrete slab(NRCS)were used as the control specimen, the curing time of URCS is 28 days and 24 h respectively. The research results show that URCS has a stronger anti-explosion ability than NRCS.The failure mode of URCS under contact explosion is that the front of the reinforced concrete slab explodes into a crater, and the back is spall. With the increase of the charge, the failure mode of the reinforced concrete slab gradually changed to explosive penetration and explosive punching. The experiment results also show that the reinforcement ratio of URCS has little effect on the anti-blast performance, and URCS can reach its anti-blast performance at 28 days after curing for 24 h.On this basis, the damage parameters of URCS for different curing durations were quantified, and an empirical formula for predicting the diameter of the crater and spalling was established. 展开更多

The ground-state energy and its derivate of the acoustic polaron in free-standing slab are calculated by using the Huybrechts-like variational approach. The criteria for presence of the selftrapping transition of the acoustic polaron in free-standing slabs are determined qualitatively. The critical coupling constant for the discontinuous transition from a quasi-free state to a trapped state of the acoustic polaron in free-standing slabs tends to shift toward the weaker electronphonon coupling with the increasing cutoff wave-vector. Detailed numerical results confirm that the self-trapping transition of holes is expected to occur in the free-standing slabs of wide-bandgap semi-conductors. 展开更多

The numerical results of the surface phonon-polariton frequencies as functions of the wave-vector and thickness for slabs of ternary mixed crystals AlxGa1-xAs, Znx Cd1-x S,and Gax In1-x N are obtained and discussed. The p and s-polarized surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) of symmetric and asymmetric slabs formed arbitrarily by four types of conventional materials: dielectrics, negative dielectric permittivity materials, negative magnetic permeability materials, and left-handed materials are comprehensively analysed. The existence regions, dispersion relations, and excitation of SPPs in different frequency regions are investigated in detail. For symmetric slabs, the numbers and the frequency positions of surface polariton branches are quite different. At the same time, the pairs of the p or s-polarized SPP branches occur in the same frequency range. For asymmetric slabs, the SPP branches in mid- and high-frequency ranges are greatly different. In addition, the slab thickness has a great effect on SPPs of asymmetric and symmetric slabs. The attenuated total reflection spectra for the cases of p and s polarizations in these slabs are also calculated. 展开更多

We have designed and fabricated two types of two-port resonant tunneling filters with a triangular air-hole lattice in two-dimensional photonic crystal slabs. In order to improve the filtering efficiency, a feedback method is introduced by closing the waveguide. It is found that the relative position between the closed waveguide boundary and the resonator has an important impact on the dropping efficiency. Based on our analyses, two different types of filters are designed. The transmission spectra and scattering-light far-field patterns are measured, which agree well with theoretical prediction. In addition, the resonant filters are highly sensitive to the size of the resonant cavities, which are useful for practical applications. 展开更多

As the influence of the ratio of the characteristic value of structural resistance to that of frequent combination effect, K, on the thickness of concrete cover of prestressed concrete (PC) beams and slabs for fire resistance is not considered sufficiently in design criteria for concrete structures in China and other countries at present, numerical analyses were carried out by ANSYS software on unbonded prestressed concrete (UPC) oneway simply-supported and continuous slabs and beams, and bonded PC simply-supported and continuous beams subjected to fire in 186 cases. In the analysis, K, section dimensions and the thickness of concrete cover are regarded as independent variables and some calculation parameters determined by trial and error based on test resuits. Calculation formula for fire endurance of UPC simply-supported and continuous slabs was proposed, and the recommended thicknesses of cover of PC beams and slabs was presented in consideration of the influence of K and section dimensions as well as fire endurance requirements.
