Compared with the growth model, the linear model, the logarithm model and the exponential model, the cubic model has higher regression accuracy R2 and it can capture the sigmoid shape of the deterioration curve. So it is selected to simulate the pavement rotting development. The benefit over cost ratio is calculated to quantify the treatment cost- effectiveness. The analysis results show that thin hot mix asphalt (HMA) overlays and micro surfacing are more cost- effective than the. other two treatments on light and moderate traffic roads. Hot in-place recycling and thick HMA overlays have much longer service lives and greater cost-effectiveness under heavy or extra heavy traffic.展开更多

The ground structure approach is often used to solve this kind of design problems. In this paper, the topology optimization is formulated as a Multiobjective Optimization Problem (MOP), which is to find the cross-sectional area of truss members, such that both the total volume of members and the weighted mean compliance are minimized. Based upon the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions (the optimality condition), the Pareto optimal front of this problem can be obtained theoretically. The truss topology optimization under multiple load cases can be solved by the SLP. On the other hand, the LP such as the Simplex method or the interior point method can be applied to find one of the Pareto optimal solutions of the MOP under single load case. The applications of either the SLP or the LP are illustrated in numerical examples with discussion on characteristics of design results.展开更多

Although quasi-static direct and dynamic indirect tensile strength testing methods have already been developed for rocks, the dynamic direct pull test is still necessary to accurately determine the tensile strength of rocks. In this paper, a Kolsky tension bar system is developed for measuring the dynamic direct tensile strength of rocks. A dumbbell-shaped sample is adopted and attached to the bars using epoxy glue. The pulse shaping technique is utilized to eliminate the inertial effect of samples during test. The single pulse loading technique is developed for the effective microstructure analyses of tested samples. Two absorption devices are successfully utilized to reduce the reflection of waves in the incident bar and transmitted bar, respectively. Laurentian granite (LG) is tested to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method. The tensile strength of LG increases with the loading rate. Furthermore, the nominal surface energy of LG is measured, which also increases with the loading rate.展开更多
