Sibling relationships may be particularly important because few adults with severe mental illness have children. As parents grow older, adult children are expected to support their sibling with mental illness when their parents are no longer able to do so. The sibling relationship has the potential to be one of the most significant relationships for adults with schizophrenia. The aim of this paper is to present a case study of a sister’s experiences and needs in her contact with psychiatric care. This single case study was designed and the informant was recruited because of her value in maximizing what we can learn about being a sibling to a person with mental illness. Data were collected through four indepth, semistructured, repeated interviews during a two-year period, and were interpreted and analyzed through content analysis. Three major topics were discussed: 1) Anna’s brother’s time with formal psychiatric care;2) Anna’s feelings and emotions;and 3) Anna’s view of her contact with psychiatric care. The findings indicated a sibling’s need for attention, support, and understanding from the formal caregivers. Participation in our study was one of the first opportunities she had to talk about her relationship with formal psychiatric care. An open dialogue may help siblings to manage their situations.展开更多

With a primary focus on practices for referring to third parties, the broad aim of this paper is to show that whilst the selection of referring expression is based on complex, deeply social and cultural conventions,it is also a highly systematic and orderly activity. More specifically, this paper explores an interactional 'puzzle' contained in a single piece of data,in which a daughter — in conversation with her mother — refers to her father( her mother's ex-husband) in three different ways in quick succession. In doing so,we illustrate the potential interactional import of referring expressions for accomplishing social action beyond indexing an individual. In analysing this single case, one procedure for doing conversation analytic work is also illustrated. That is,in contrast to building and analysing collections, this paper draws on and applies what is already known from previous conversation analytic literature about practices for referring to persons. In analysing one fragment in which reference to a third party is made,we will review the fundamentals of the organisation of person reference in English.展开更多

Bidi- rectional Glenn shunt operation is becoming the most common and effective palliative op- eration of single ventricle to improve the symptoms before modified Fontan operation. However, Bidirectional Glenn shunt opera- tion is rarely applied to the adult patient (more than 20 years old) with single ventri- cle because of the low survival rate1. In this report, we presented a six years following-up study of the Bidirectional Glenn shunt in a 37-year-old female patient with single ventricle.展开更多

Participants were required to take three Audio Visual Entrainment (AVE) sessions to test for anxiety reduction as proclaimed by some academic research. Explicit reports were measured as well as pre-attentive bias to stressing information by using affective priming studies before and after AVE intervention. Group analysis shows that indeed AVEs program applications do reduce anxiety producing significant changes over explicit reports on anxiety levels and automatic processing bias of emotion. However, case by case analysis of six anxious participants shows that even when all of the participants report emotional improvement after intervention, not all of them reduce or eliminate dysfunctional bias to stressing information. Rather, they show a variety of processing styles due to intervention and some of them show no change at all. Implications of this differential effect to clinical sets are discussed.展开更多

The ground structure approach is often used to solve this kind of design problems. In this paper, the topology optimization is formulated as a Multiobjective Optimization Problem (MOP), which is to find the cross-sectional area of truss members, such that both the total volume of members and the weighted mean compliance are minimized. Based upon the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions (the optimality condition), the Pareto optimal front of this problem can be obtained theoretically. The truss topology optimization under multiple load cases can be solved by the SLP. On the other hand, the LP such as the Simplex method or the interior point method can be applied to find one of the Pareto optimal solutions of the MOP under single load case. The applications of either the SLP or the LP are illustrated in numerical examples with discussion on characteristics of design results.展开更多
