Simulation Analysis for Massive Deployment of Variable Renewables Employing an Optimal Power Generation Mix Model

This paper develops a high time-resolution optimal power generation mix model in its time resolution of 10 minutes on 365 days by linear programming technique. The model allows us to analyse the massive deployment of photovoltaic system and wind power generation in power system explicitly considering those short-term output variation. PV (photovoltaic) and wind output are estimated, employing meteorological database. Simulation results reveal that variable fluctuation derived from a high penetration level of those renewables is controlled by quick load following operation of natural gas combined cycle power plant, pumped-storage hydro power, stationary NAS (sodium and sulfur) battery and the output suppression control of PV and wind. It additionally turns out that the operational configuration of those technologies for the renewable variability differs significantly depending on those renewable output variations in each season and solving the seasonal electricity imbalance as well as the daily imbalance is important if variable renewables are massively deployed. 展开更多

We present numerical simulations of simplified models for swimming organisms or robots, using chordwise flexible elastic plates. We focus on the tip vortices originating from three-dimensional effects due to the finite span of the plate. These effects play an important role when predicting the swimmer's cruising velocity, since they contribute significantly to the drag force. First we simulate swimmers with rectangular plates of different aspect ratios and compare the results with a recent experimental study. Then we consider plates with expanding and contracting shapes. We find the cruising velocity of the contracting swimmer to be higher than the rectangular one, which in turn is higher than the expanding one. We provide some evidence that this result is due to the tip vortices interacting differently with the swimmer. 展开更多

Near-IR femtosecond lasers have been proposed to produce high-field terahertz radiation in the air via the laser-plasma interaction, but the physical mechanism still needs to be further explored. In this work, we theoretically investigate the effect of the two-color laser wavelength on the terahertz generation in the air based on a transient photocurrent model.We show that the long wavelength laser excitation can greatly enhance the terahertz amplitude for a given total laser intensity. Furthermore, we utilize a local current model to illustrate the enhancement mechanism. Our analysis shows that the terahertz amplitude is determined by the superposition of contributions from individual ionization events, and for the long wavelength laser excitation, the electron production concentrates in a few ionization events and acquires the larger drift velocities, which results in the stronger terahertz radiation generation. These results will be very helpful for understanding the terahertz generation process and optimizing the terahertz output. 展开更多

Based on the geological and geochemical analysis of potential source rocks in different formations and the classification of crude oil types,combined with the hydrocarbon generation thermal simulation experiments,the source,genesis,and distribution of different types of oils in the Mahu large oil province of the Junggar Basin are investigated.Four sets of potential source rocks are developed in the Mahu Sag.Specifically,the source rocks of the Permian Fengcheng Formation have the highest hydrocarbon generation potential and contain mainly TypesⅡandⅠorganic matters,with a high oil generation capacity.In contrast,the source rocks in other formations exhibit lower hydrocarbon generation potential and contain mainly TypeⅢorganic matter,with dominant gas generation.Oils in the Mahu Sag can be classified as three types:A,B and C,which display ascending,mountainous and descending C_(20)-C_(21)-C_(23)tricyclic terpenes abundance patterns in sequence,and gradually increasing relative content of tricyclic terpenes and sterane isomerization parameters,indicating an increasing oil maturity.Different types of oils are distributed spatially in an obviously orderly manner:Type A oil is close to the edge of the sag,Type C oil is concentrated in the center of the sag,and Type B oil lies in the slope area between Type A and Type C.The results of oil-source correlation and thermal simulation experiments show that the three types of oils come from the source rocks of the Fengcheng Formation at different thermal evolution stages.This new understanding of the differential genesis of oils in the Mahu Sag reasonably explains the source,distribution,and genetic mechanism of the three types of oils.The study results are of important guidance for the comprehensive and three-dimensional oil exploration,the identification of oil distribution in the total petroleum system,and the prediction of favorable exploration areas in the Mahu Sag. 展开更多

Advanced nuclear reactors offer safe, clean, and reliable energy at the global scale. The development of such devices relies heavily upon computational models, from the pre-conceptual stages through detailed design, licensing, and operation. An integrated reactor modeling framework that enables seamless communication, coupling, automation, and continuous development brings significant new capabilities and efficiencies to the practice of reactor design. In such a system, key performance metrics (e.g., optimal fuel management, peak cladding temperature in design-basis accidents, levelized cost of electricity) can be explicitly linked to design inputs (e.g., assembly duct thickness, tolerances), enabling an exceptional level of design consistency. Coupled with high-performance computing, thousands of integrated cases can be executed simultaneously to analyze the full system, perform complete sensitivity studies, and efficiently and robustly evaluate various design tradeoffs. TerraPower has developed such a tool-the Advanced Reactor Modeling Interface (ARMI) code system-and has deployed it to support the TerraPower Traveling Wave Reactor design and other innovative energy products currently under development. The ARMI code system employs pre-existing tools with strong pedigrees alongside many new physics and data management modules necessary for innovative design. Verification and validation against previous and new physical measurements, which remain an essential element of any sound design, are being carried out. A novel framework of ecological risk management for urban development in ecologically fragile regions: A case study of Turpan City, China

Assessing and managing ecological risks in ecologically fragile areas remain challenging at present.To get to know the ecological risk situation in Turpan City,China,this study constructed an ecological risk evaluation system to obtain the ecological risk level(ERL)and ecological risk index(ERI)based on the multi-objective linear programming-patch generation land use simulation(MOP-PLUS)model,analyzed the changes in land use and ecological risk in Turpan City from 2000 to 2020,and predicted the land use and ecological risk in 2030 under four different scenarios(business as usual(BAU),rapid economic development(RED),ecological protection priority(EPP),and eco-economic equilibrium,(EEB)).The results showed that the conversion of land use from 2000 to 2030 was mainly between unused land and the other land use types.The ERL of unused land was the highest among all the land use types.The ecological risk increased sharply from 2000 to 2010 and then decreased from 2010 to 2020.According to the value of ERI,we divided the ecological risk into seven levels by natural breakpoint method;the higher the level,the higher the ecological risk.For the four scenarios in 2030,under the EPP scenario,the area at VII level was zero,while the area at VII level reached the largest under the RED scenario.Comparing with 2020,the areas at I and II levels increased under the BAU,EPP,and EEB scenarios,while decreased under the RED scenario.The spatial distributions of ecological risk of BAU and EEB scenarios were similar,but the areas at I and II levels were larger and the areas at V and VI levels were smaller under the EEB scenario than under the BAU scenario.Therefore,the EEB scenario was the optimal development route for Turpan City.In addition,the results of spatial autocorrelation showed that the large area of unused land was the main reason affecting the spatial pattern of ecological risk under different scenarios.According to Geodetector,the dominant driving factors of ecological risk were gross domestic product rating(GDPR),soil type,population,temperature,and distance from riverbed(DFRD).The interaction between driving factor pairs amplified their influence on ecological risk.This research would help explore the low ecological risk development path for urban construction in the future. 展开更多

Organic-inorganic interaction exists universally and is important in the process of mineral resources formation.It is the essential reason why organic oil,gas,coal and inorganic uranium coexist,accumulate,and mineralize in the same sedimentary basins.Hydrocarbon-generating simulation experiment was conducted using low-mature hydrocarbon source rock containing kerogen type III with uranium(UO2CO3 solution)added to study the effects of uranium on the hydrocarbon generation of hydrocarbon source rocks.Experiment results show that uranium can enhance the yield of gas hydrocarbon,promote the total gas output,and increase the total hydrocarbon production(mass or volume).Uranium may lower the hydrocarbon generation threshold temperature and lead to the generation of liquid hydrocarbon in the relative low temperature of hydrocarbon source rock.Uranium can enhance the yield of saturated hydrocarbon,promote the low molecular weight hydrocarbons generating,and in turn increase the content of CH4 and the content of dry gas of the generated hydrocarbons.Uranium is one of the potential inorganic accelerating factors of the immature hydrocarbons. 展开更多

In this paper, the computational and analytical study for superharmonic field generation from phased array transducer of 16 × 16 elements is presented. For this, the model preferred, includes the calculation for diffraction effect in frequency domain and nonlinear effect in time domain. The attenuation is included along with the diffraction in frequency domain as well. The comparative analysis of superharmonic field is also carried out with simulated fundamental and second harmonic fields by the same model. The lane changing decision model(LCDM)is a critical component in semi-and fully-automated driving systems.Recent research has found that the fuzzy inference system(FIS)is a promising approach to implementing LCDMs.To improve the FIS’s performance,this research reviewed the challenges in the development an FIS model to make the yes;nof g decisions in discretionary lane changes.The FIS model was revised to bring its fuzzy inference rules more consistent with the fuzzy membership functions,and its com-position and defuzzification methods more in line with the classical fuzzy logic theory.An equitable test data set with approximately equal number of yes;nof g data points was assembled from the same next generation simulation(NGSIM)data used in the past research.The test results proved that:(1)an LCDM’s performance was dependent on how the yes;nof g decisions in the test data set were manually labeled;(2)separating the fuzzy inference rules into a yesf g group and a nof g group and compute the results sep-arately yielded potentially better decision accuracy.Furthermore,The gene expression pro-gramming model(GEPM)performed better than the improved FIS-based model.The findings led the authors to suggest two possible research directions:(1)add the subject vehicle’s speed as an input to the LCDM and redesign the decision-making model;(2)con-struct models for congested and uncongested traffic separately.The authors further sug-gested the use of instrumented vehicles to collect a set of high-fidelity lane changing data in the naturalistic driving environment. 展开更多
