The simple model for 4f-5d transitions of lanthanide ions in crystals was extended to deal with the case of the octahedral crystal field,where for the t_(2)component of 5d orbitals the spin-orbit interaction could not be neglected due to incomplete quenching of the 5d orbital angular momentum.The energy levels for the 4f^(N-1)5d configuration and the relative line strengths for the 4f^(N)\4f^(N-1)5d transition were calculated in detail.The result was applied to the interpretation of the low-temperature 4f-5d excitation spectrum of Cs_(2)NaYCl_(6)∶Tb^(3+). 展开更多

The modeling ability of a stand-alone version of the Simple Biosphere Model 2(SiB2) was tested mainly through diagnosing the simulated latent heat(LE),sensible heat(H),CO2 flux,and air temperature at the Tongyu field observation station(44°25'N,122°52'E,184 m elevation) of Coordinated Enhanced Observing Period(CEOP),where the land cover is cropland and grassland.In the whole year of 2003,the canopy height and the leaf area index was variable.During non-growth period,the surface would become bare,while during the growth period,the canopy height could reach 2.0 m high over cropland and 0.8 m high over grassland,respectively,and max leaf area index could reach 4.2 and 2.4,respectively.The model was initialized with measurement and driven by half-hourly atmospheric observations.The simulation values for 2003 were compared against measurements.Results show that the model is of a good ability of simulating the hourly latent heat(LE),sensible heat(H),CO2 flux and temperature during the growth period.Moreover,the daily LE,H and CO2 flux simulated by SiB2 could reflect their yearly change reasonably.However,the model may overestimate the H generally. 展开更多

In this paper, surface wind stress anomalies over the tropical Pacific simulated by an AGCM and by a simple atmospheric model are compared with observed. The AGCM is the higher resolution global spectral model-COLA R40 model and the simple atmospheric model is the atmospheric component of the Cane-Zebiak coupled ocean-atmosphere model.The results show that the wind stress anomalies simulated by both the COLA R40 and the simple model have captured the main features of observation but the x component in the CZ model is closer to that in observation than that in the COLA model, and the correlation coefficients between simulated SSTA from the CZ model and observed for Nino indices are higher than those from the COLA model. 展开更多

A new simple thixotropy model was proposed in the present paper to characterize the thixotropy-loop experiments and the start-up experiment of an LDPE (PE-FSB23D0221Q200) melt. The thixotropy model is a combination of a viscoelastic-component and a postulated kinetics process of structure change, which is constituted in terms of the indirect microstructural approach usually adopted in the characterization of thixotropy. The descriptions of the thixotropy model on both the thixotropy-loop tests and the startup test show good agreement with the experimental values, indicating the good capability of the model in characterizing the time-dependent nonlinear viscoelastic. The stress overshoot phenomenon and the stress relaxation after cessation of the thixotropy loop test can be described well by the model, whereas both of the typical viscoelastic phenomena could not be described in our previous work with a variant Huang model. 展开更多

Severe biases exist in state-of-the-art general circulation models(GCMs) in capturing realistic central-Pacific(CP) El Nino structures. At the same time, many observational analyses have emphasized that thermocline(TH) feedback and zonal advective(ZA) feedback play dominant roles in the development of eastern-Pacific(EP) and CP El Nino-Southern Oscillation(ENSO), respectively. In this work, a simple linear air-sea coupled model, which can accurately depict the strength distribution of the TH and ZA feedbacks in the equatorial Pacific, is used to investigate these two types of El Nino. The results indicate that the model can reproduce the main characteristics of CP ENSO if the TH feedback is switched off and the ZA feedback is retained as the only positive feedback, confirming the dominant role played by ZA feedback in the development of CP ENSO. Further experiments indicate that, through a simple nonlinear control approach, many ENSO characteristics,including the existence of both CP and EP El Nino and the asymmetries between El Nino and La Nina, can be successfully captured using the simple linear air-sea coupled model. These analyses indicate that an accurate depiction of the climatological sea surface temperature distribution and the related ZA feedback, which are the subject of severe biases in GCMs, is very important in simulating a realistic CP El Nino. 展开更多

A simple but applicable analytical model is presented to predict the lat- eral distribution of the depth-averaged velocity in meandering compound channels. The governing equation with curvilinear coordinates is derived from the momentum equation and the flow continuity equation under the condition of quasi-uniform flow. A series of experiments are conducted in a large-scale meandering compound channel. Based on the experimental data, a magnitude analysis is carried out for the governing equation, and two lower-order shear stress terms are ignored. Four groups of experimental data from different sources are used to verify the predictive capability of this model, and good predictions are obtained. Finally, the determination of the velocity parameter and the limitation of this model are discussed. 展开更多

In this paper,the influence of the El NioSouthern Oscillation (ENSO) cycle on the sensitivity of nonlinear factors in the numerical simulation is investigated by conducting numerical experiments in a simple air-sea coupled model for ENSO prediction.Two sets of experiments are conducted in which zonal nonlinear factors,meridional nonlinear factors,or both are incorporated into the governing equations for the atmosphere or ocean.The results suggest that the ENSO cycle is very sensitive to the nonlinear factor of the governing equation for the atmosphere or ocean.Thus,incorporating nonlinearity into air-sea coupled models is of exclusive importance for improving ENSO simulation. 展开更多

Investigation on characteristics of liquid self-diffusion in slit nanopores using simple quasicrystal model of liquid

Dynamical properties of liquid in nano-channels attract much interest because of their applications in engineering and biological systems. The transfer behavior of liquid confined within nanopores differs significantly from that in the bulk. Based on the simple quasicrystal model of liquid, analytical expressions of self-diffusion coefficient both in bulk and in slit nanopore are derived from the Stokes–Einstein equation and the modified Eyring's equation for viscosity. The local self-diffusion coefficient in different layers of liquid and the global self-diffusion coefficient in the slit nanopore are deduced from these expressions. The influences of confinement by pore walls,pore widths, liquid density, and temperature on the self-diffusion coefficient are investigated. The results indicate that the self-diffusion coefficient in nanopore increases with the pore width and approaches the bulk value as the pore width is sufficiently large. Similar to that in bulk state, the self-diffusion coefficient in nanopore decreases with the increase of density and the decrease of temperature, but these dependences are weaker than that in bulk state and become even weaker as the pore width decreases. This work provides a simple method to capture the physical behavior and to investigate the dynamic properties of liquid in nanopores. 展开更多

In the SU(3) simple group model, the new neutral gauge boson Z' couples to pairs of SM fermions with couplings fixed in terms of the SM gauge couplings and depending only on the choice of the fermion embedding. In this paper, we calculate the contributions of this new particle to the processes e^+e^-→l^+l^-, bb^-, and cc^- and study the possibility of detecting this new particle via these processes in the future high-energy linear e^+e^- collider(LC) experiments with √s= 500 GeV and £int= 340 fb^-1. We find that the new gauge boson Z' is most sensitive to the process e^+e^-→b^+b^-. As long as Mz,≤2 TeV , the absolute values of the relative correction parameter are larger than 5%. We calculate the forward-backward asymmetries and left-right asymmetries for the process e^+e^-→c^+c^-, with both the universal and anomaly-free fermion embeddings. Bounds on Z' masses are also estimated within 95% confidence level. 展开更多

A Simple Quasi-Geostrophic Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere Model

The quasi-geostrophic atmospheric and oceanic equations of momentum and thermodynamics with dissipation factors are used to create a simple coupled ocean-atmosphere model describing the large-scale shallow-water motion. We discuss the ocean-atmosphere coupling effect in mid-high and low latitudes separately and analyze characteristics of which the oscillatory periods of coupled low-frequency modes (ocean mode) vary with the coupling frequency and latitudinal number. This can interpret the correlation between low-frequency oscillation and ocean-atmosphere interaction. Then from the dispersion curves of atmosphere and ocean, we reveal effect of the coupling strength on the propagation of Rossby waves. The convection mechanism between the two modes is also discussed in view of the slowly varying wave train.The results show that Newtonian cooling and Rayleigh friction play a stable rule in oceanic Rossby waves, the period of coupled low-frequency mode grows with the increment of the coupling frequency. The larger the latitudinal number is, the more rapidly it grows. When the coupling frequency tends to critical value, the oceanic Rossby waves become static. When the ocean-atmosphere coupling strength grows to some degree, the propagation of oceanic Rossby waves will become opposite to its original direction. One part of the oceanic Rossby waves is converted into atmospheric Rossby waves, the energy conversion coefficient is also solved out. 展开更多

It becomes much significant for improvement of agricultural production and ef- fective use of water to explore the rule of water dynamic at small scale, spatially or temporally. In the research, water dynamic in soil horizons at 0-40 cm in winter wheat belts was simulated by SIMPLE model as per water balance principle. Fur- thermore, ETp in fields was computed according to Haude method (DVWK stan- dards); retained amount of water in fields and wilting coefficient were calculated based on soil parameters with SPAW (Soil-Plant-Air-Water). The simulated results of SIMPLE model showed that the correlation of measured and simulated water con- tent in soils was 0.95 and relative error averaged lower than 3.1%, suggesting that the model would make a more precise estimation of water content in root zone in the area. 展开更多

The model, consisting of a time spectrum, can well fit the steady shear viscosities of the waxy crude oil over the whole experimental shear rate region from 10-4 to 102 s- 1. Some complemental discussion on effects of J-mixing on the f-d transition intensities for Eu^3+ due to the f-electron crystal-field interaction Hcf(f), which was ignored in the simple mod- el, was presented. Some previously unexplained peaks for Tb^3 + were interpreted to be spin-forbidden transitions to higher 5d crystal-field levels, or assigned to be f→d excitations with the core 4f7 excited from ^8S to ^6P, ^6I and ^6D, respectively. It is shown that the main structure of 4f-Sd excitation spectra of Eu^3+ and Tb^3+ can be well interpreted with the simple model. 展开更多

Desirable characteristics of machine mounts for the above two purposes can differ significantly due to difference in nature of the excitation and performance criteria in the two situations. In this paper, relevant response quantities are identified that may be used to quantify performance and simplified models of rotating machines are presented using which these relevant response quantities may be calculated. Using random vibration approach with a stationary excitation, it is shown that significant improvement in seismic performance is achievable by proper mount design. Results of shaking table experiments performed with a realistic setup using a centrifugal pump are presented. It is concluded that a solution to this dual isolation problem lies in a semi-active mount capable switching its properties from ‘operation-optimum’ to ‘seismic-optimum’ at the onset of a seismic event. 展开更多

Through transfers and exchanges of heat and water, the therrnal and moisture states of the atmosphere, vegetation and soil are linked in a coupled system, in which vegetation is considered as a horizontally uniform layer, soil is divided into three layers and the horizontal differences of variables in the system are neglected. The preliminary results of the experiment indicate that the model is capable of predicting the thermal and moisture conditions of the land surface and suitable to climate study. 展开更多

A method to compute the numerical derivative of eigenvalues of parameterized crystal field Hamiltonian matrix is given, based on the numerical derivatives the general iteration methods such as Levenberg-Marquardt, Newton method, and so on, can be used to solve crystal field parameters by fitting to experimental energy levels. With the numerical eigenvalue derivative, a detailed iteration algorithm to compute crystal field parameters by fitting experimental energy levels has also been described. This method is used to compute the crystal parameters of Yb^3+ in Sc2O3 crystal, which is prepared by a co-precipitation method and whose structure was refined by Rietveld method. By fitting on the parameters of a simple overlap model of crystal field, the results show that the new method can fit the crystal field energy splitting with fast convergence and good stability. 展开更多
