Exploring the Friction and Wear Properties of Silver Coatings on 718 Alloy

Fasteners of 718 alloys are used to set up connection between each support and other components for ITER system, metal-based Ag solid lubricant coating is widely used as an anti-seizure lubricant coating due to its strong low-temperature shear resistance. But the poor adhesion to the steel surfaces has been a critical restriction for applying the silver coatings to the practical machine elements. In this work, an 8-μm silver self-lubricating coating was deposited on the surface of 718 alloy by the method of magnetron sputtering. The coating was uniform, dense and consistent. The wear mechanism was investigated by analyzing the friction and wear properties of the coating. Stress is one of the important impacts on the friction coefficient, the results showed that it first increased and then decreased with the increase of pressure at room temperature and under vacuum. Temperature exerted an effect on the silver self-lubricating coating. A study was conducted under vacuum on the friction and wear performance of the coating at 300 K, 225 K, 155 K, and 77 K, respectively. The results showed that the wear mechanism and wear state varied under various low-temperature conditions, with the severity of wear reaching the maximum only at 225 K. Through the same silver coating process, the washer of superbolt was improved by silver coating treatment. 展开更多

Silver coatings on the exterior surface of monolithic activated carbon(MAC) with different morphology were prepared by directly immersing MAC into [Ag(NH3)2]NO3 solution. Acid and base treatments were employed to modify the surface oxygenic groups of MAC, respectively. The MACs' Brunauer-EmmettTeller(BET) surface area, surface groups, and silver coating morphology were characterized by N2 adsorption, elemental analysis(EA), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), and scanning electron microscopy(SEM), respectively. The coating morphology was found to be closely related to the surface area and surface functional groups of MAC. For a raw MAC which contained a variety of oxygenic groups, HNO3 treatment enhanced the relative amount of highly oxidized groups such as carboxyl and carbonates, which disfavored the deposition of silver particles. By contrast, Na OH treatment significantly improved the amount of carbonyl groups, which in turn improved the deposition amount of silver. Importantly, lamella silver was produced on raw MAC while Na OH treatment resulted in granular particles because of the capping effect of carbonyl groups. At appropriate [Ag(NH3)2]NO3 concentrations, silver nanoparticles smaller than 100 nm were homogeneously dispersed on Na OH-treated MAC. The successful tuning of the size and morphology of silver coatings on MAC is promising for novel applications in air purification and for antibacterial or aesthetic purposes. 展开更多

A facile method was proposed to prepare stretchable silver-based composite coatings with excellent conductivity and stability for flexible electronics.Silver coating was firstly deposited on thermoplastic polyurethane(TPU)elastomer rubber surface via two-component spraying technique,then the superhydrophobic surface was obtained by one-step electrodeposition of cerium compounds(CeM)and graphene nanosheets(GNS)to produce Ag/CeM/GNS composite coatings.The obtained Ag/CeM/GNS composite coatings maintained high conductivity after experiencing bending cycles and stretching cycles.Furthermore,the as-prepared Ag/CeM/GNS composite coatings showed excellent self-cleaning and anti-fouling properties,and the corrosion resistance has improved significantly compared to the original Ag coating.In addition,the Ag/CeM/GNS composite coatings could drive the circuit normally in the states of tensile,bending and twisting deformation,showing excellent mechanical stability and applicability.As a result,it is believed that the prepared Ag/CeM/GNS composite coatings with excellent conductivity and stability have promising applications for flexible electronics in harsh conditions. 展开更多

A series of silver-doped graphite-like carbon coatings was prepared on the surface of aluminum alloy using the magnetron sputtering method. The spontaneous escape behavior and inhibition mechanism of silver from graphite-like carbon coating were studied. The results showed that when the sample prepared with a 0.01-A current on the silver target was placed in an atmospheric environment for 0.5 h, an apparent silver escape phenomenon could be observed. However, the silver escape phenomenon was not observed for samples prepared with a 0.05-A current on the silver target if the sample was retained in a 10^(-1) Pa vacuum environment, even after 48 h. Compared with the sample placed in the atmospheric environment immediately after an ion plating process, the silver escape time lagged for 6 h. Nanometer-thick pure carbon coating coverage could effectively suppress silver escape. When the coating thickness reached700 nm, permanent retention of silver could be achieved in the silver-doped graphite-like carbon coating.As the silver residue content in the graphite-like carbon coating increased from 2.27 at.% to 5.35 at.%, the interfacial contact resistance of the coating decreased from 51mΩcm^2 to 6 mΩcm^2. 展开更多

The pressure-actuated metal seal with soft metal coating has been widely used in complex working conditions such as high temperature,low temperature and high pressure.The investigation of the characteristics and binding strength of the transition layer between the soft metal coating and the superalloy substrate is important to improve the sealing performance and to model and simplify the working through-process of metal sealing.The distribution characteristics of elements at soft metal-substrate interface and the binding strength between coating and substrate under different thicknesses and material combinations of coating layer were studied by experimental methods.The results indicate that the thickness of soft metal coating has little influence on the interface morphology of GH4169-Cu,GH4169-Ag and Cu-Ag,but has an influence on the thickness of transition layer between different metals,while this influence is weakened with increasing the coating thickness,and the thickness of transition layer is about 2μm when the coating thickness is more than 30μm.The cross-cut test shows that the Cu,Ag and Cu-Ag coatings are all well combined with nickel-based superalloy GH4169 substrate.The materials of soft metal,i.e.the coating materials,have significant influence on the characteristic of transition layer and the surface characteristics of coating after cross-cut test. 展开更多

The surface morphology of Zn O films at different annealing temperatures and the performance of polymer solar cells(PSCs) with Zn O as the electron transport layer are studied.The low temperature sol-gel processed Zn O film has smoother surface than that in higher temperature,which results in the best photovoltaic performance with a power conversion efficiency(PCE) of 3.66% for P3HT:PC61BM based solar cell.With increasing annealing temperature,the photovoltaic performance first deceases and then increases.It could be ascribed to the synergy effects of interface area,the conductivity and surface energy of Zn O film and series resistance of devices. 展开更多

The deformable mirror utilizes the concept of magnetic fluid deformation shaped with electromagnetic fields to achieve concave or convex surface and to change the optical focus depth of the mirrors. The free surface of the magnetic fluid is coated with a thin layer of metal-liquid-like film(MELLF) prepared from densely packed silver nanoparticles to enhance the reflectance of the deformable mirror. The experimental results on the fabricated prototype magnetic fluid deformable mirror(MFDM) show that the desired concave/convex surface shape can be controlled precisely with a closed-loop adaptive optical system. 展开更多

A novel Ag coated intensity modulated optical fiber sensor based on refractive index changes using IR and UV-Vis (UV-visible) light sources is proposed. The sensor with an IR light source has higher sensitivity compared to a UV-Vis source. When the refractive index is en- hanced to 1.38, the normalized intensity of IR and UV-Vis light diminishes to 0.2 and 0.8. respectively. 展开更多
