The technique of the immersed boundary method is incorporated into the framework of the fictitious domain method for solving the state equations. Contrary to the conventional methods, our method does not make use of the finite element discretization with obstacle fitted meshes. It conduces to overcoming difficulties arising from re-meshing operations in the optimization process. The method can lead to a reduction in computational effort and is easily programmable. It is applied to a shape reconstruction problem in the airfoil design. Numerical experiments demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach.展开更多

Based on the domain derivative method, we derive the explicit representation of the derivative of solution with respect to the boundary. Then, according to the boundary parametrization technique, we propose a regularized Gauss-Newton algorithm for the shape inverse problem. Finally, numerical examples indicate that the iterative algorithm is feasible and effective for the practical purpose.展开更多

A coattail-type tenon/mortise of an aero-engine was optimized. In this model, the maximum equivalent stress of the nodes on the boundary of the tenon was the objective function; the width of tooth’s neck and the side surface’s slope angle of a tenon were design variables, with constraints of tension stress, extrusion stress and reliability index. The result showed that the distributions of the contact pressure between tenon and mortise, the equivalence stress and reliability index were more reasonable. It validates the correctness of the optimization model and the reliability-based structural shape optimization, and provides valuable references for structural design of the tenon/mortise.展开更多

Using oblate spheroidal coordinates and displacement functions, an analytic method is devel- oped in which the opening and the sliding displacements on each crack surface are taken as the basic unknown functions. The basic unknown functions can be expanded in series of Legendre polynomials with unknown coefficients. Based on superposition technique, a set of governing equations for the unknown coefficients are formulated from the traction free conditions on each crack surface. The boundary collocation procedure and the average method for crack-surface tractions are used for solving the governing equations. The solution can be obtained for quite closely located cracks. Numerical examples are given for several crack problems. By comparing the present results with other existing results, one can conclude that the present method provides a direct and efficient approach to deal with three-dimensional solids containing multiple cracks.展开更多

Characteristic equation of plastic zone critical radius is obtained as a first approximation. A formula of critical angular velocity is derived which determines the stability loss of the disc according to the self-balanced form. Efficiency of the proposed method is shown by an illustrative example considered in Section 7. Values of critical angular velocity of rotation are found numerically for different parameters of the disc.展开更多

Using the phase-shift technique, points cloud with high spatial resolution and limited accuracy can be generated. Stereo-pair images obtained from two cameras can be used to compute 3D world coordinates of a point using traditional active triangulation approach, yet the camera calibration is crucial. Neural network is a well-known approach to approximate a nonlinear system without an explicit physical model, in this work it is used to train the stereo vision application system to calculating 3D world coordinates such that the camera calibration can be bypassed. The training set for neural network consists of a variety of stereo-pair images and the corresponding 3D world coordinates. The picture elements correspondence problem is solved by using projected color-coded fringes with different orientations. Color imbalance is completely eliminated by the new color-coded method. Once the high accuracy correspondence of 2D images with 3D points is acquired, high precision 3D points cloud can be recognized by the well trained net. The obvious advantage of this approach is that high spatial resolution can be obtained by the phase-shifting technique and high accuracy 3D object point coordinates are achieved by the well trained net which is independent of the camera model works for any type of camera. Some experiments verified the performance of the method.展开更多

It is shown that a random variable shape parameter strategy can improve the accuracy of approximating higher order derivatives with Radial Basis Function methods. The method is used to solve fourth order boundary value problems. The use and location of ghost points are examined in order to enforce the extra boundary conditions that are necessary to make a fourth-order problem well posed. The use of ghost points versus solving an overdetermined linear system via least squares is studied. For a general fourth-order boundary value problem, the recommended approach is to either use one of two novel sets of ghost centers introduced here or else to use a least squares approach. When using either ghost centers or least squares, the random variable shape parameter strategy results in significantly better accuracy than when a constant shape parameter is used.展开更多
