This paradise has a long history of numerous wars, foreign occupations, and most recently the Second Indochina War (aka the Vietnam War 1965-1972) which defoliated rain forests and ancient wetland mangroves and left behind contaminated soil and sediment hotspots. During this war, the United States (US) military sprayed 80 million liters of Agent Orange contaminated with the dioxin TCDD in a guerrilla war against communist insurgents. Agent Orange was a synthetic plant growth regulator comprised of equal amounts of two herbicides 2,4-dichloro phenoxyacetic acid C8H6Cl2O3 (2,4-D) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid C8H5Cl3O3 (2,4,5-T). TCDD, the dioxin, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (C12H4Cl4O2) was an unintended byproduct of the accelerated combustion process used in the manufacture of herbicides containing 2,4,5-T. Agent Orange has frequently been blamed for soil and sediment contamination and long-term human health problems;however, the true source of harm is the dioxin TCDD. Agent Orange has a short half-life of days and weeks after application to vegetation, and has not been found to persist, after 50 years, in the water or soils of southern Vietnam. However, the half-life of dioxin TCDD depends on where it is deposited and varies from 1 to 3 years on soil surfaces that have been fully exposed to sunlight, to as long as 20 to 50 years or more when buried in tropical subsoils, and more than 100 years in river and sea sediments. Dioxin TCDD was heavily concentrated in the US Air Force bases in Vietnam where the herbicides were stored, loaded on planes and helicopters for aerial spraying, and used extensively around military base perimeter fences as a security measure to prevent surprise attacks. Bien Hoa Air Force base, 40 km northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, continues to be one of the mega-hotspots where after 48 years the dioxin TCDD levels in fish and shrimp are still high and fishing is banned in ponds and lakes adjacent to the airbase. Although expensive, one of the most effective remediation to dioxin TCDD contaminated soils is incineration which is the recommended method of dioxin TCDD disposal.展开更多

The results show that:(1) The grain size of the surface sediment samples decreased gradually from land to sea in the flood season. The fine sediment was redistributed under marine hydrodynamics in the dry season and the sediments showed coarser tendency ingeneral;(2) tidal current stirring sediment was very obvious in Dagu River estuary area, and wave stirring sediments mainly occurred in the tidal flat area and estuary sand bar area;(3) in the flood season, surface sediment sat the estuary were transported towards south and southeast. In the dry season, surface sediments were transported towards southwest at the north area of Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, and sediments were transported towards northeast area at the south of Jiaozhou Bay Bridge.展开更多

Examination of Yenisei River sediment samples revealed the presence of artificial radionuclides typical of radioactive discharge from the Mining-and-Chemical- Combine (MCC) nuclear facility: isotopes of europium (152Eu, 154Eu, and 155Eu), cesium (137Cs and 134Cs), 60Co, 90Sr, and transuranium elements. The MCC is also a source of radioactive particles in the Yenisei. New data on radionuclide concentrations in sediments and radioactive particles in the Yenisei River were obtained using a wide range of analytical methods. Sequential extraction performed on samples of sediment cores showed different degrees of potential environmental availability of artificial radionuclides and uranium. In a few samples, 241Am was present in the unextractable form, which may be accounted for by the presence of microparticles of the reactor fuel. These microparticles were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, and their reactor origin was confirmed.展开更多

With the growing emphasis on clean energy technologies, the Cenozoic organic deposits of India have gained renewed significance;however, those from the southern state of Kerala remain understudied. This study investigates lignite and associated carbonaceous sediments from the Cheruvathur and Warkalli Formations using a multi-proxy approach integrating organic petrography, infrared spectroscopy, stable carbon isotopes, and REE geochemistry. The lignite exhibits huminite dominance with Type Ⅲ kerogen, deposited in a wet, mesotropic bog forest swamp under anoxic conditions. The mineral assemblage, dominated by kaolinite, quartz, illite, montmorillonite, feldspar, and pyrite/marcasite, reflects strong chemical alteration in a reducing environment. The δ^(13)C values(-25.1 to-27.3) indicate a C_(3) angiosperm source and deposition in tropical to subtropical swamp settings. REE patterns reveal LREE enrichment in carbonaceous shales and HREE enrichment in lignite, with distinct Ce, Eu, and Gd anomalies associated with provenance and redox conditions. The findings provide new insights into the paleoenvironmental evolution of Kerala's Cenozoic basins and highlight their potential as unconventional REE-bearing resources in the context of the global energy transition.展开更多

A combined method of inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry and isotope ratio mass spectrometry was used to investigate trace and rareearth element geochemistry and hydrogen and oxygen isotopic compositions. These data were then used to infer the sediments' provenance and paleoclimatic conditions during their deposition. The sediments contained low concentrations of most trace elements, with the exceptions of Zr(651–1352 ppm), Ba(56–157 ppm), V(38–90 ppm),and Sr(15.1–59.6 ppm). Average values of Co and Ni were1.5 and 0.7 ppm, respectively. Trace and rare earth element values were lower than corresponding values for upper continental crust and Post-Archean Australian Shale, with the exception of Zr. The samples showed only slight light rare-earth enrichment and nearly flat heavy rare-earth depletion patterns, with negative Eu and Tm anomalies, typical of felsic sources. Geochemical parameters such as La/Sc, Th/Sc, and Th/Co ratios support that the kaolinitic sediments were derived from a felsic rock source, likely deposited in an oxic environment.^(18 )O values ranged from+ 15.4 to + 21.2% for the investigated samples, consistent with a residual material derived from chemicalweathering of felsic rock and redeposited in a sedimentary basin(typical values of + 19 to + 21.2%). While in the basin, the sediments experienced extended interactions with meteoric water enriched in d D and d16 O. However, the variation in d D and d16 O values for the investigated samples is attributed to the high temperature of formation(54–91 °C). The d D and d^(18 )O values suggest that the sediments, although obtained from different localities within the Lower Benue Trough, formed under similar hot, tropical climatic conditions.展开更多

Prior to the bioleaching experiments, a physico-chemical characterization of the sediments comprising a sequential extraction study was conducted. The sediments turned out to highly contaminated with heavy metals. Most of the studied metals were found to be strongly linked to the matrix because of their association with the sulphides and with the organic matter. The conditions that favored the solubilization of heavy metals by the filamentous fungi turned out to be favorable for the activity of the sediments organotrophic bacterial microflora as well. The latter played a key role in the biosolubilization process by producing organic acids under temporary anoxic conditions. Better solubilization results (Mn: 77%, Zn: 44%, Cu: 12%, Cd and Pb: <2%) were thus obtained in the uninoculated sugar treatment in comparison to the fungal treatment. In general, organotrophic leaching was found to be limited by the poor nature of the organic acids and by their microbial consumption under sugar limited conditions. It was therefore restrained to the relatively mobile metals, namely those linked to the acid-soluble and reducible fractions of the sediments.展开更多

We investigated the occurrence of 22 antimicrobial resistance genes(ARGs) and 10 heavy metal concentrations, and the relationship between ARGs and heavy metals in surface sediment from seven sites of Lake Taihu. The results showed significant correlations(p < 0.05) between sediment ARG levels, especially for tetracycline and sulfonamides(e.g., tet(A), tet(D), tet(E), tet(O), sul1, sul2 and int-1) and specific heavy metals(Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu, Zn, among others) in the Lake. In the surface sediments, heavy metals showed an interaction with resistance genes, but the strength of interaction was diminished with increasing depth. For most of the heavy metals, the concentration of elements in the top sediments was higher than that in other depths.Tetracycline resistance genes(tet(A), tet(B), tet(D), tet(E) and tet(O), β-lactam resistance genes(SHV, TEM, CTX, OXA and OXY) and sulfonamide resistance genes(sulA, sul1, sul2, sul3 and int-1) were detected. They showed a trend which inferred a statistically significant increase followed by decreases in the relative abundance of these ARGs(normalized to 16 S rRNA genes) with increasing depth. This study revealed that tet(A), tet(O), TEM, OXY, int-1, sul1 and sul3 were widespread in surface sediments with high abundance, indicating that these genes deserve more attention in future work.展开更多

The sediments were geochemically characterized, combining geochemical analysis, sequential extractions, and210 Pb chronology. The results indicated that the river sediments were severely polluted by heavy metals in the order of Cd [ Zn & Pb & Sb [ As. These heavy metals generally exhibited relatively low enrichment in the upstream sediments because of the limited anthropogenic impact, but their abundances drastically increased in the midstream sediments due to local smelting activities. In downstream sediments, the heavy metal concentrations(except for Cd) decreased, owing to the effect of dam interception and detrital inputs. Cadmium levels tended to increase in downstream sediments, which were attributed to the intensive discharge of Cd during the pollution event in 2012. The sedimentary records were traced back to1985, and a significant decrease of heavy metal enrichments could be found after the year 2000, suggesting the enhancement of environmental management in this period. The statistical results indicated that local metal smelting and mining activities were the main anthropogenic contributors for the enrichment of heavy metals in the dammed-river sediments. High enrichment factor and nonresidual fractions of heavy metals in local sediments may pose a direct threat to aquatic organisms. Cd presents significant danger because of its extreme enrichment and high labile fractions.展开更多

Three kinds of DGT probes (with three thicknesses of diffusive gel: 0.38 mm, 0.78 mm and 1.18 mm) measured vertical concentration and induced flux from solid to solution phase which had intricate variations with depth. The results indicated that higher concentrations and induced fluxes of DRP were achieved by using DGT probe with thicker diffusion layer (CDGT1.18 > CDGT0.78 > CDGT0.38) and relatively stable DRP concentration profiles using DGT probes with 0.78 mm diffusive gel were obtained in each sediment core. The DRP concentrations displayed a clear gradient from Core C1 to Core C3 in sediment porewaters due to different sources and exchange degrees of reactive phosphorus. Compared to the concentrations obtained by the centrifugation technique, the concentrations of DRP resulting from the DGT technique were higher because some dissolved reactive phosphorus compounds have always been neglected using conventional centrifugation method.展开更多

The sediment samples were collected from Hangzhou Bay(HB),Xiangshan Bay(XB), and Taizhou Bay(TB) to investigate the spatial occurrence and distribution of 27 ARGs and class I integron–integrase gene(intI1) in the coastal area of the East China Sea. The PCR results showed the frequent presence of 11 ARGs and intI1 in the sediments of the three bays. The qPCR results further showed that sulfonamide resistance was the most prevalent ARG type and antibiotic target replacement and protection were the most important resistance mechanisms in the sediments. Regarding the subtype of ARGs, sulI, tetW, and dfrA13 were the most abundant ARGs, in which sulI was higher in TB(based on both the absolute and relative abundances) and dfrA13 was higher in HB(based on the relative abundances). The network analysis revealed that intI1 had significant correlations with tetC, sulI, sulII, and blaPSE-1. Oil was the key connected factor, which had positive connections with sulI, sulII, and blaPSE-1. In addition, the joint effect of heavy metals and nutrients & organic pollutants might be crucial for the fate of ARGs in the coastal sediments.展开更多

Although the sediment transport in the Yellow River Mouth(YRM) has been observed and modeled intensively since AWSR, but preferentially for the non-storm conditions. In this study, a three-dimensional current-wave-sediment coupled model, DHI-MIKE numerical model, was used to examine the seasonal suspended-sediment transport in the YRM after the AWSR. Results show that the seasonal distribution of suspended-sediments in the YRM is dominated by wind and wave rather than river input. The major transport pathway of suspended-sediments is from the western Laizhou Bay to the Bohai Strait during the winter monsoon, especially in storm events. In addition, about 66% of the river sediments deposit within 30 km of the YRM, which is smaller than previous estimations. It suggests that the YRM has been eroded in recent decades.展开更多

The northeastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau is one of the most actively-growing mountain belt on earth, and has large amounts of debris, with masses of fine grained material, which were continuously mobilized and deposited in the Alagxa Plateau by rivers, forming broad alluvial fans. It is possible that the role of fluvial sediments as a source of silty dust in the Alagxa Plateau has been underestimated. In this study, we test this hypothesis by investigating the iron mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the fluvial sediments and the surface material of the sandy desert in the Alagxa Plateau, and comparing them with paleo-eolian dust deposits(loess) in the adjacent Chinese Loess Plateau(CLP) to investigate the possible linkages among the fluvial sediments, sandy desert and the last glacial loess of the CLP. The results show that sandy desert typically have high contents of goethite, and high ratios of goethite to hematite, similar to the fluvial sediments in the Alagxa Plateau. Based on the major element characteristics, field investigations and the results of previous studies, we found a genetic link between the silt component of the fluvial sediments and the sandy desert in the Alagxa Plateau with high value of Gt(goethite) and similarity of the Gt/(Hm(hematite)+Gt) ratio. But the silt component of the sandy desert main come from the adjacent fluvial sediments. The iron mineralogical characteristics(χ(magnetic susceptibility), χARM(anhysteretic susceptibility), SIRM(saturation isothermal remanent magnetization) and SIRM_(AF100 mT)(SIRM demagnetized at 100 mT)) of the CLP samples overlap with those of the fluvial sediments in the Alagxa Plateau, but there is a mismatch with the sandy desert samples. This suggests that the fluvial sediments are the source of a large amount of silty material which could be transported to the CLP. Therefore, we conclude that the fluvial sediment in the Alagxa Plateau is an important source of eolian silt, which is deposited in downwind region, and that this source has been previously underestimated.展开更多

The age of sediments varies from Miocene to Early Cretaceous. Iron particles are present at 521samples out of 921studied. Their percentage varies from 10-5% to 0.05%. The distribution consists of two groups: 1) “zero” group (iron is not found by TMA);2) group of logarithmic normal distribution with a differing modes. The global enrichment by iron particles in synchronous deposits of Miocene, Maastrichtian-Danian, Santonian and Cenomanian was discovered. With respect to nickel content, the iron particles fall into two groups: 1) nearly pure iron without nickel;and 2) iron with nickel content up to 20%, with modal value of 5%. The source of iron particles is the cosmic dust. Particles of pure nickel and the alloy containing more of 20% of nickel are very rare. Possibly, such particles are related mainly with impact events. A peak of elevated iron content with nearly constant nickel of 5-6% was found in almost all studied sections. It is a global effect which is not dependent of place and time of deposition of iron particles.展开更多

Heavy mineral assemblages in the very fine sand fraction (0.063 - 0.125 mm) of 10 sediment samples were identified using petrography microscope. Results of descriptive statistical parameters revealed that most sediments samples belonged within very poorly sorted to extremely poorly sorted, strongly negative skewed to strongly positive skewed and mesokurtic to very leptokurtic. The quartz was the dominant in the opaque minerals in all sediments. The non-opaque heavy minerals were dominant by zircon, tourmaline, rutile, garnet, sillimanite, and andalusite. Results revealed that the ultrastable minerals (zircon, tourmaline and rutile) were found in all sediments with range from (2% - 47.36%, 2.08% - 29% and 3% - 24.99%), respectively. Garnet, sillimanite and andalusite were also found with range from (5% - 67%, 1% - 9.09% and 1% - 50%), respectively. Heavy mineral assemblage indentifies sources that are not bounded to the local origin. The proportion and presence of heavy minerals from outside source rocks indicated relatively strong reworking of zircon sand from the outer-shelf to inner-shelf as well relatively long distance of transport. Fluvial and Aeolian sediments were the dominant environments in the investigated area. We conclude that most heavy minerals in the study area are originally derived from gneisses and schist metamorphic rocks and some igneous rocks of the Ethiopian plateau.展开更多

Although expensive, one of the most effective remediation to dioxin TCDD contaminated soils is incineration which is the recommended method of dioxin TCDD disposal.

文摘Based on the 39 surface sediment samples collected in the flood season and the dry season in 2012 respectively and the measured hydrological data in October 2012, the sediment grain size characteristics has been analyzed and the response mechanism of surface sediments to estuarine hydrodynamics was revealed by calculating the range of waves and tidal currents. In the dry season, surface sediments were transported towards southwest at the north area of Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, and sediments were transported towards northeast area at the south of Jiaozhou Bay Bridge.

文摘Benthic habitat mapping is an emerging discipline in the international marine field in recent years, providing an effective tool for marine spatial planning, marine ecological management, and decision-making applications.Seabed sediment classification is one of the main contents of seabed habitat mapping. In response to the impact of remote sensing imaging quality and the limitations of acoustic measurement range, where a single data source does not fully reflect the substrate type,we proposed a high-precision seabed habitat sediment classification method that integrates data from multiple sources.Based on WorldView-2 multi-spectral remote sensing image data and multibeam bathymetry data, constructed a random forests(RF)classifier with optimal feature selection.A seabed sediment classification experiment integrating optical remote sensing and acoustic remote sensing data was carried out in the shallow water area of Wuzhizhou Island,Hainan,South China.Different seabed sediment types, such as sand, seagrass, and coral reefs were effectively identified, with an overall classification accuracy of 92%.Experimental results show that RF matrix optimized by fusing multi-source remote sensing data for feature selection were better than the classification results of simple combinations of data sources, which improved the accuracy of seabed sediment classification. Therefore, the method proposed in this paper can be effectively applied to high-precision seabed sediment classification and habitat mapping around islands and reefs.

文摘This study compares the environmental sustainability of five alternatives for the remediation of marine sediments of one of the most polluted coastal sites in Europe(Bagnoli-Coroglio bay,Mediterranean Sea),using the Life Cycle Assessment(LCA)methodology. The treatments are either in-situ or exsitu, the latter requiring an initial dredging to transport the contaminated sediments to the management site.More in detail, four ex-situ remediation technologies based on landfilling, bioremediation, electrokinetic technique and soil washing were identified. These technologies are compared to an in-situ strategy currently under validation for enhancing bioremediation of the polluted sediments of the Bagnoli-Coroglio site. Our results indicate that the disposal in landfilling site is the worst option in most categories(e.g.,650 kg CO_(2) eq./t of treated sediment, considering the nearest landfilling site),followed by the bioremediation, mainly due to the high energy demand.Electrokinetic remediation, soil washing, and innovative in-situ technology represent the most sustainable options. In particular, the new in-situ technology appears to be the least impacting in all categories(e.g.,54 kg CO_(2) eq./t of treated sediment),although it is expected to require longer treatment time(estimated up to 12 months based on its potential efficiency). It can reduce the impact on climate change more than 12 times compared to the disposal and 7 times compared to bioremediation in addition to the possibility to avoid/reduce the dredging operations and the consequent dispersion of pollutants. The results open relevant perspectives towards more eco-sustainable and costly effective actions for the reclamation of contaminated marine sediments.

文摘Aeolian sediments in the eastern Qinghai Lake region,China serve as sensitive paleoclimate archives, offering an ideal window into past environmental conditions. This study investigated the Dashuitang(QDST)profile in the eastern Qinghai Lake region by integrating sediment grain size, chroma, and magnetic susceptibility(MS)proxies to reconstruct the regional environmental evolution since the Last Glacial Interstadial and to investigate its relationship with the water level fluctuations of Qinghai Lake.Grain size end-member modeling analysis(EMMA)identified three end-members:end-member 1(EM1)represented fine-grained material transported over longer distances through mixing processes, which could reveal the regional moisture conditions;end-member 2(EM2)primarily consisted of coarse-grained material from nearby sources transported via saltation or creep, indicating the intensity of the winter monsoon;and end-member 3(EM3)mainly reflected deposition from dust storm events controlled by regional low-altitude wind systems. In addition, the regional environmental sequence demonstrated coherence with other records, collectively elucidating the sub-orbital-scale dynamics of the Asian monsoon. The environmental sequence was divided into four principal phases on the basis of sedimentary characteristics and climatic responses:the late Last Glacial Interstadial,Last Glacial Maximum,Last Deglaciation, and Holocene phases.Additionally, the results of this study revealed that there is a close linkage between desertification and lake evolution in the eastern Qinghai Lake region.Since the Last Glacial Interstadial, desertification and lake evolution processes have generally exhibited a trade-off relationship, wherein lake level decline and desert expansion exhibited a direct positive feedback. However, during the early period of the Late Holocene(approximately 2.80–1.50 ka BP),a synergistic response pattern emerged, characterized by relatively high lake levels alongside moderate desert expansion, reflecting an asymmetric decoupling mechanism between the hydrological processes and aeolian dynamics during climatic transition periods. This study provides important insights for predicting the future evolution trends of lake-desert systems under climate change.
文摘The Yenisei River, one of the largest rivers in the world, is contaminated with artificial radionuclides released by a Russian nuclear facility producing weapon-grade plutonium, which has been in operation for many years. These microparticles were investigated using scanning electron microscopy, and their reactor origin was confirmed.
文摘Organic-rich sediments represent vital components of Earth's geochemical cycles, acting both as potential hydrocarbon and coal reservoirs and as unconventional archives for critical metals such as rare earth elements(REEs). The findings provide new insights into the paleoenvironmental evolution of Kerala's Cenozoic basins and highlight their potential as unconventional REE-bearing resources in the context of the global energy transition.

文摘Liquid-solid phase transfer promotes the interaction of perfluoroalkyl acids(PFAAs)with the microbial system of river sediments, which may affect the environmental behavior of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs)contained in benthic environments.Sediments collected from the receiving water of the largest fluoropolymer production facility in China were analyzed to investigate the impact of PFAAs on microbial communities and ARG profiles. The main contributors to the PFAAs were perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorobutanoic acid, whose proportions(86.9%-93.4%)in the downstream surface sediments affected by industrial effluents were significantly higher than in the corresponding upstream samples(53.3%).A reduction in microbial diversity and richness was observed in the presence of high concentrations of PFAAs at the downstream sites.144 ARG subtypes, including three high-risk subtypes(bacA,aac(6′)-I and aadA),were identified in sediment samples. The discharge of fluorochemical effluents also results in a reduction of ARG diversity at subtype level.PFAAs exert a pronounced influence on the profile of ARGs in sediment.PFAAs and water quality parameters(e.g.pH and total phosphorus)were key drivers of the microbial community composition in the sediment. The regulation of microbial communities by PFAAs may represent an important pathway by which these compounds affect ARG profiles.
文摘This study evaluated the Cretaceous(Campanian–Maastrichtian) kaolinitic sediments of the Ajali/Mamu and Enugu/Nkporo Formations from the Lower Benue Trough of Nigeria. The d D and d^(18 )O values suggest that the sediments, although obtained from different localities within the Lower Benue Trough, formed under similar hot, tropical climatic conditions.
文摘Filamentous fungi were used to leach heavy metals from dredged sediments in semi-pilot scale air-lift bioreactors. It was therefore restrained to the relatively mobile metals, namely those linked to the acid-soluble and reducible fractions of the sediments.

文摘Heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and other wastes released into the environment can significantly influence environmental antibiotic resistance. This study revealed that tet(A), tet(O), TEM, OXY, int-1, sul1 and sul3 were widespread in surface sediments with high abundance, indicating that these genes deserve more attention in future work.

文摘In the present study, six sediment cores were collected from six river-dammed reservoirs to reveal the geochemical distribution of heavy metals(As, Cd, Pb, Sb,and Zn) in the Longjiang River, South China, which is highly impacted by nonferrous metal mining and smelting activities. Cd presents significant danger because of its extreme enrichment and high labile fractions.
文摘The technique of DGT (diffusive gradients in thin films) was applied to obtain high-resolution vertical profiles of dissolved reactive phosphorus (DRP) in sediment porewater of Lake Chaohu, a shallow eutrophication lake. Compared to the concentrations obtained by the centrifugation technique, the concentrations of DRP resulting from the DGT technique were higher because some dissolved reactive phosphorus compounds have always been neglected using conventional centrifugation method.

文摘The coastal area of the East China Sea has experienced rapid urbanization and industrialization in China since 1980 s, resulting in severe pollution of its environments.Antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs) are regarded as a kind of emerging pollutant with potential high risk. In addition, the joint effect of heavy metals and nutrients & organic pollutants might be crucial for the fate of ARGs in the coastal sediments.

文摘The study aims to investigate uranium species in the sediments of the natural-technogenic system within a sludge storage facility in Russia. The relevance of this work is underscored by the need to assess the geochemical mobility of radionuclides,a critical factor for predicting their migration and environmental impact. The objective of the research was to determine the uranium species in both peat and sedimentary rock samples of the sludge storage facility and the adjacent area.Laboratory analyses included XRD,XRF analysis using synchrotron radiation, and scanning electron microscopy to study the composition and properties of minerals. The uranium species were further identified using a modified Tessier sequential extraction method. The results revealed that uranium predominantly occurs in a stable silicate-bound form(up to 80%)in sedimentary rocks, indicating minimal geochemical mobility. In contrast,in peat deposits, uranium is primarily associated with manganese and iron oxides(30–60%)as well as organic matter(5–40%),with the most mobile forms constituting less than 5%.The decrease in uranium concentration with distance from the facility was attributed to sorption onto organic matter and co-precipitation with mineral compounds, manganese and iron oxides, which serve as effective natural sorbents. The findings highlight the critical role of organic matter and metal oxides in limiting uranium migration, thus identifying them as key components in the formation of natural barriers for radionuclides. These results are crucial for assessing environmental risks associated with radioactive waste management and for developing strategies to minimize the ecological impact of sludge storages.

文摘Since 2002, an artificial water and sediment regulation(AWSR) has been carried out, which largely reduced water and sediment discharged from the Yellow River into the Bohai Sea. It suggests that the YRM has been eroded in recent decades.

文摘Neonicotinoid insecticides(NEOs)have become an integral part of the global insecticide market due to their high efficiency and low toxicity. However, their environmental persistence has raised significant ecological concerns.Dongting Lake represents a vital freshwater lake in China, and its ecosystem health directly affects regional ecological balance and people’s livelihoods. This study systematically investigated the occurrence characteristics and ecological risks of NEOs in water bodies and sediments across the Dongting Lake basin.Based on surface water and sediment samples collected from 26 representative sampling sites, this study quantified nine NEOs using liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometry.Furthermore,it assessed ecological risks posed by the NEOs using the risk quotient(RQ)method and fugacity modeling. The results revealed the presence of six NEOs in the water bodies:imidacloprid(IMI),acetamiprid(ACE),clothianidin(CLO),thiamethoxam(THIA),flonicamid(FLO),and dinotefuran(DIN).The total concentrations of these six NEOs averaged 275.11 ng/L.Five predominant NEOs(i.e.,IMI,THIA,ACE,CLO,and DIN)were identified in the sediments, with a mean concentration of 0.31 ng/g.The NEO concentrations in the water bodies across the Dongting Lake basin increased in the order of the Xiangjiang,Zishui,Yuanjiang, and Lishui rivers(collectively referred to as the Four Rivers),the mainstream of Dongting Lake, the Xinqiang River, the Miluo River, and the Hudu,Ouchi, and Songzi rivers(collectively referred to as the Three Outlets).Sediments from tributaries progressively accumulate in the lake. The ecological risk assessment identified IMI and DIN as the highest-risk compounds(RQ>1),with high-risk areas concentrated in the mainstream of Dongting Lake and the Ouchi,Miluo, and Hudu rivers. The fugacity model showed that IMI,ACE,and THIA are prone to diffuse from sediments to water bodies in most areas, with fugacity fractions(ff)values of greater than 0.5.In contrast, the mainstream of Dongting Lake acts as a sink of CLO and DIN(ff values:<0.5).Sediments at the lake’s outlet emerge as an important sink of NEOs.Based on the results of this study,it is advisable to strengthen the supervision of NEO applications in agricultural areas and to implement zonal control strategies. These measures will help reduce ecological risks and protect the safety of water ecosystems in the Dongting Lake region.

文摘The Alagxa Plateau, in the margin of the northeastern Tibetan Plateau, is one of the most important dust source areas in East Asia, and the widespread sandy desert in the area is important both as a reservoir and a source of eolian silty. Therefore, we conclude that the fluvial sediment in the Alagxa Plateau is an important source of eolian silt, which is deposited in downwind region, and that this source has been previously underestimated.
文摘With the aid of thermomagnetic analysis (TMA) up to 800ºС the composition and distribution of particles of native iron and Fe-Ni alloy was studied in 15 sections, Gams (Austria), Verhorechie and Selbuhra (Crimea), Kvirinaki and Tetritskaro (Georgia), Aimaki, Bass, Dzhengutaj, Madzhalis and Gergebil (North Caucasus, Russia), Klyuchi and Tep-lovka (Volga Region, Russia), Koshak (Kazakhstan), Kara-Kala and Khalats (Turkmenistan). It is a global effect which is not dependent of place and time of deposition of iron particles.
文摘Origin and distribution of the heavy minerals of surficial and subsurficial sediments has been investigated in the alluvial Nile River terraces, Khartoum North, Sudan. We conclude that most heavy minerals in the study area are originally derived from gneisses and schist metamorphic rocks and some igneous rocks of the Ethiopian plateau.
