Studies of wave-current interactions are vital for the safe design of structures.Regular waves in the presence of uniform,linear shear,and quadratic shear currents are explored by the High-Level Green-Naghdi model in this paper.The five-point central difference method is used for spatial discretization,and the fourth-order Adams predictor-corrector scheme is employed for marching in time.The domain-decomposition method is applied for the wave-current generation and absorption.The effects of currents on the wave profile and velocity field are examined under two conditions:the same velocity of currents at the still-water level and the constant flow volume of currents.Wave profiles and velocity fields demonstrate substantial differences in three types of currents owing to the diverse vertical distribution of current velocity and vorticity.Then,loads on small-scale vertical cylinders subjected to regular waves and three types of background currents with the same flow volume are investigated.The maximum load intensity and load fluctuation amplitude in uniform,linear shear,and quadratic shear currents increase sequentially.The stretched superposition method overestimates the maximum load intensity and load fluctuation amplitude in opposing currents and underestimates these values in following currents.The stretched superposition method obtains a poor approximation for strong nonlinear waves,particularly in the case of the opposing quadratic shear current. 展开更多

Ice-breaking methods have become increasingly significant with the ongoing development of the polar regions.Among many ice-breaking methods,ice-breaking that utilizes a moving load is unique compared with the common collision or impact methods.A moving load can generate flexural-gravity waves(FGWs),under the influence of which the ice sheet undergoes deformation and may even experience structural damage.Moving loads can be divided into above-ice loads and underwater loads.For the above-ice loads,we discuss the characteristics of the FGWs generated by a moving load acting on a complete ice sheet,an ice sheet with a crack,and an ice sheet with a lead of open water.For underwater loads,we discuss the influence on the ice-breaking characteristics of FGWs of the mode of motion,the geometrical features,and the trajectory of motion of the load.In addition to discussing the status of current research and the technical challenges of ice-breaking by moving loads,this paper also looks ahead to future research prospects and presents some preliminary ideas for consideration. 展开更多

This paper presents a study on the motion response of a tension-leg platform(TLP) under first-and second-order wave forces, including the mean-drift force, difference and sum-frequency forces. The second-order wave force is calculated using the full-field quadratic transfer function(QTF). The coupled effect of the horizontal motions, such as surge, sway and yaw motions, and the set-down motion are taken into consideration by the nonlinear restoring matrix. The time-domain analysis with 50-yr random sea state is performed. A comparison of the results of different case studies is made to assess the influence of second-order wave force on the motions of the platform. The analysis shows that the second-order wave force has a major impact on motions of the TLP. The second-order difference-frequency wave force has an obvious influence on the low-frequency motions of surge and sway, and also will induce a large set-down motion which is an important part of heave motion. Besides, the second-order sum-frequency force will induce a set of high-frequency motions of roll and pitch. However, little influence of second-order wave force is found on the yaw motion. 展开更多

This paper studies the random internal wave equations describing the density interface displacements and the velocity potentials of N-layer stratified fluid contained between two rigid walls at the top and bottom. The density interface displacements and the velocity potentials were solved to the second-order by an expansion approach used by Longuet-Higgins (1963) and Dean (1979) in the study of random surface waves and by Song (2004) in the study of second- order random wave solutions for internal waves in a two-layer fluid. The obtained results indicate that the first-order solutions are a linear superposition of many wave components with different amplitudes, wave numbers and frequencies, and that the amplitudes of first-order wave components with the same wave numbers and frequencies between the adjacent density interfaces are modulated by each other. They also show that the second-order solutions consist of two parts: the first one is the first-order solutions, and the second one is the solutions of the second-order asymptotic equations, which describe the second-order nonlinear modification and the second-order wave-wave interactions not only among the wave components on same density interfaces but also among the wave components between the adjacent density interfaces. Both the first-order and second-order solutions depend on the density and depth of each layer. It is also deduced that the results of the present work include those derived by Song (2004) for second-order random wave solutions for internal waves in a two-layer fluid as a particular case. 展开更多

In the present research, the study of Song (2004) for random interfacial waves in two-layer fluid is extended to the case of fluids moving at different steady uniform speeds. The equations describing the random displacements of the density interface and the associated velocity potentials in two-layer fluid are solved to the second order, and the wave-wave interactions of the wave components and the interactions between the waves and currents are described. As expected, the extended solutions include those obtained by Song (2004) as one special case where the steady uniform currents of the two fluids are taken as zero, and the solutions reduce to those derived by Sharma and Dean (1979) for random surface waves if the density of the upper fluid and the current of the lower fluid are both taken as zero. 展开更多

A complete semi-analytical solution is obtained for second-order diffraction of plane bichromatic waves by a fixed truncated circular column.The fluid domain is divided into interior and exterior regions.In the exterior region,the second-order velocity potential is expressed in terms of‘locked-wave’and‘free-wave’ components,both are solved using Fourier and eigenfunction expansions.The re- sulting‘locked wave’potential is expressed by one-dimensional Green's integrals with oscillating integrands.In order to increase computational efficiency,the far-field part of the integrals are carried out analytically.Solutions in both regions are matched on the interface by the potential and its normal derivative continuity conditions.Based on the present approach,the sum-and difference-frequency potentials are efficiently evaluated and are used to generate the quadratic transfer functions which correlates the incident wave spectrum with second-order forcing spectrum on the column.The sum-frequency QTFs for a TLP column are present,which are compared for some frequency pairs with those from a fully numerical procedure.Satisfactory agreement has been obtained.QTF spectra for a case study TLP column,generated using the semi-analytical solution are presented.Also given are the results for nonlinear wave field around the column. 展开更多

Geophys Res Lett, 31 (15):L15302) of the second-order solutions for random interracial waves is extended in a constant depth, two-layer fluid system with a rigid lid is extended into a more general case of two-layer fluid with a top free surface. The rigid boundary condition on the upper surface is replaced by the kinematical and dynamical boundary conditions of a free surface, and the equations describing the random displacements of free surface, density-interface and the associated velocity potentials in the two-layer fluid are solved to the second order using the same expansion technology as that of Song (2004. Geophys Res Lett, 31 (15):L15302). The results show that the interface and the surface will oscillate synchronously, and the wave fields to the first-order both at the free surface and at the density-interface are made up of a linear superposition of many waves with different amplitudes, wave numbers and frequencies. The second-order solutions describe the second-order wave-wave interactions of the surface wave components, the interface wave components and among the surface and the interface wave components. The extended solutions also include special cases obtained by Thorpe for progressive interracial waves (Thorpe. 1968a.Trans R Soc London, 263A:563~614) and standing interracial waves (Thorpe. 1968b. J Fluid Mech, 32:489-528) for the two-layer fluid with a top free surface. A convolution perfectly matched layer(CPML)can efficiently absorb boundary reflection in numerical simulation.However,the CPML is suitable for the first-order elastic wave equation and is difficult to apply directly to the second-order elastic wave equation.In view of this,based on the first-order CPML absorbing boundary condition,we propose a new CPML(NCPML)boundary which can be directly applied to the second-order wave equation.We first systematically extend the first-order CPML technique into second-order wave equations,neglecting the space-varying characteristics of the partial damping coefficient in the complex-frequency domain,avoiding the generation of convolution in the time domain.We then transform the technique back to the time domain through the inverse Fourier transform.Numerical simulation indicates that the space-varying characteristics of the attenuation factor have little influence on the absorption effect and increase the memory at the same time.A number of numerical examples show that the NCPML proposed in this study is effective in simulating elastic wave propagation,and this algorithm is more efficient and requires less memory allocation than the conventional PML absorbing boundary. 展开更多

Offshore floating photovoltaic systems have tremendous potential to address the energy crisis.As a novel type of float-ing photovoltaic system,membrane structures are increasingly applied due to their advantages of being lightweight and cost-effective.A 1:40 scaled model for laboratory experiments was designed and developed,considering Ocean Sun’s membrane structure.The study aims to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the membrane structure under wave loading by testing its various mo-tion responses and mooring forces at different wave heights and periods.The conclusions indicate that as the wave period decreases within the range of 1.75 to 1.25 s,the heave motion response of the structure decreases,whereas pitch,surge motion response,heave acceleration,and mooring force increase.The amplitudes of various motions and mooring forces of the structure decrease with de-creasing wave height.The hydrodynamic responses under irregular and regular waves follow similar patterns,but the responses and mooring forces induced by irregular waves are more significant.The structure should be designed based on the actual wave height.In addition,the same frequency resonance phenomenon is avoided because the movement period of each degree of freedom is close to the wave period. 展开更多

Establishment of Numerical Wave Flume Based on the Second-Order Wave-Maker Theory

With growing computational power, the first-order wave-maker theory has become well established and is widely used for numerical wave flumes. However, existing numerical models based on the first-order wave-maker theory lose accuracy as nonlinear effects become prominent. Because spurious harmonic waves and primary waves have different propagation velocities, waves simulated by using the first-order wave-maker theory have an unstable wave profile. In this paper, a numerical wave flume with a piston-type wave-maker based on the second-order wave-maker theory has been established. Dynamic mesh technique was developed. The boundary treatment for irregular wave simulation was specially dealt with. Comparisons of the free-surface elevations using the first-order and second-order wave-maker theory prove that second-order wave-maker theory can generate stable wave profiles in both the spatial and time domains. Harmonic analysis and spectral analysis were used to prove the superiority of the second-order wave-maker theory from other two aspects. To simulate irregular waves, the numerical flume was improved to solve the problem of the water depth variation due to low-frequency motion of the wave board. In summary, the new numerical flume using the second-order wave-maker theory can guarantee the accuracy of waves by adding an extra motion of the wave board. The boundary treatment method can provide a reference for the improvement of nonlinear numerical flume. 展开更多

P-and S-wavefield simulations using both the firstand second-order separated wave equations through a high-order staggered grid finite-difference method

In seismic exploration, it is common practice to separate the P-wavefield from the S-wavefield by the elastic wavefield decomposition technique, for imaging purposes. However, it is sometimes difficult to achieve this, especially when the velocity field is complex. A useful approach in multi-component analysis and modeling is to directly solve the elastic wave equations for the pure P- or S-wavefields, referred as the separate elastic wave equa- tions. In this study, we compare two kinds of such wave equations: the first-order (velocity-stress) and the second- order (displacement-stress) separate elastic wave equa- tions, with the first-order (velocity-stress) and the second- order (displacement-stress) full (or mixed) elastic wave equations using a high-order staggered grid finite-differ- ence method. Comparisons are given of wavefield snap- shots, common-source gather seismic sections, and individual synthetic seismogram. The simulation tests show that equivalent results can be obtained, regardless of whether the first-order or second-order separate elastic wave equations are used for obtaining the pure P- or S-wavefield. The stacked pure P- and S-wavefields are equal to the mixed wave fields calculated using the corre- sponding first-order or second-order full elastic wave equations. These mixed equations are computationallyslightly less expensive than solving the separate equations. The attraction of the separate equations is that they achieve separated P- and S-wavefields which can be used to test the efficacy of wave decomposition procedures in multi-com- ponent processing. The second-order separate elastic wave equations are a good choice because they offer information on the pure P-wave or S-wave displacements. 展开更多

The parameters involved in the distributions can be all determined by the water depth and the wave number spectrum of ocean waves. As an illustrative example, a fully developed wind generated sea is considered and the parameters are calculated for typical wind speeds and water depths by means of the Donelan and Pierson spectrum. For the global and structural fatigue strength analysis of a semi-submersible platform, wave loads under design conditions are calculated by use of the three-dimensional boundary element method. Methods for calculating the forward-speed free-surface Green function are discussed and a computer program with this Green function is developed. According to the special rules, the wave loads under several typical design conditions of the platform are calculated. The maximum vertical bending moment, torsion moment and horizontal split force are determined from a series of contour maps of wave loads for the wave period of 5 to 18 seconds at a certain interval and the wave phase of 0degrees to 360degrees at a certain interval. The wave height is determined by the function of wave period with a given exceedance probability. The maximum wave loads under the combination of wave parameters are used as the input of hydrodynamic pressure in the three-dimensional finite element analysis process. The transfer functions of wave loads on the platform are used for the fatigue strength analysis of the K-tubular joint and the sub-model of the structure. 展开更多

In this study, a multi-column tension-leg-type FWT(i.e., Wind Star TLP system) is investigated for its global performance under normal operating conditions and when parked. The selected variables are analysed using a fully coupled aero-hydro-servo-elastic time domain simulation tool FAST.Three different loading scenarios(wind only, wave only and both combined) are examined to identify the dominant load influencing each response. The key response variables are obtained and compared with those for an NREL5 MW baseline wind turbine installed on land. The results should aid the detailed design of the Wind Star TLP system. 展开更多

In this study, the coupled heave-pitch motion equations of a spar platform were established by considering lst-order and 2nd-order random wave loads and the effects of time-varying displacement volume and transient wave elevation. We generated random wave loads based on frequency-domain wave load transfer functions and the Joint North Sea Wave Project (JONSWAP) wave spectrum, designed program codes to solve the motion equations, and then simulated the coupled heave-pitch motion responses of the platform in the time domain. We then calculated and compared the motion responses in different sea conditions and separately investigated the effects of 2nd-order random wave loads and transient wave elevation. The results show that the coupled heave-pitch motion responses of the platform are primarily dominated by wave height and the characteristic wave period, the latter of which has a greater impact. 2nd-order mean wave loads mainly affect the average heave value. The platform's pitch increases after the 2nd-order low frequency wave loads are taken into account. The platform's heave is underestimated if the transient wave elevation term in the motion equations is neglected. 展开更多

The hydrodynamic coefficients of platform were calculated by the three-dimensional potential flow theory of the linear hydrodynamic problem for platform with low forward speed. The equation of platform motions was established and solved in frequency domain, and the responses of wave-induced loads on the platform can be obtained. With the interpolation method being utilized, the pressure loads on shell elements for finite element analysis (FEA) were converted from those on the hydrodynamic computation mesh, which pave the basis for FEA with commercial software.A computer program based on this method has been developed, and a calculation example of semi-submersible platform was illustrated.Analysis results show that this method is a satisfying approach of wave loads computation for this kind of platform. 展开更多

Wave diffraction of two concentric porous cylinders with varying porosity was studied by using an analytical method based on eigenfunction matching.The fluid domain around the cylinders is divided into three sub-domains and in each sub-domain an eigenfunction expansion of the velocity potential is obtained by satisfying the Laplace equation,the boundary conditions on the free surface and on the sea bed.The unknown coefficients of eigenfunction expansions are determined by boundary conditions on the porous hulls.In the paper,the boundary conditions are based upon the assumption that the flow in the porous medium is governed by Darcy's law.Two porous-effect parameters applied on two porous cylinders are functions of the vertical coordinate instead of the constant.Wave loading on the outer and inner cylinder is presented in the numerical results. 展开更多

In this study, systematic physical model tests were performed to investigate the wave forces on the twin-plate breakwater under irregular waves. Based on the experimental results, the effects of the relative plate width B/L,wave height Hs/D and incident angle θ0 on the wave forces were analyzed and discussed. The results showed that:(1) The envelopes of the total wave pressure were generally symmetrical along the direction of plate width under the incident angles(θ0) being 0°, 15°, 30°, 45° and 60°. In particular, the envelopes of wave pressure atθ0=30° were larger than all other cases.(2) The synchronous pressure distribution of the breakwater under oblique wave action was more complicated comparing to the normal incident waves.(3) Based on data analysis, an empirical formula was obtained to estimate the total vertical force of the twin-plate breakwater.This empirical formula can be a good reference for the design basis of engineering applications under specified wave conditions. 展开更多
