Scientometric analysis and historical review of diabetic encephalopathy research:Trends and hotspots(2004-2023)

BACKGROUND Diabetic encephalopathy(DE)is a common and serious complication of diabetes that can cause death in many patients and significantly affects the lives of individuals and society.Multiple studies investigating the pathogenesis of DE have been reported.However,few studies have focused on scientometric analysis of DE.AIM To analyze literature on DE using scientometrics to provide a comprehensive picture of research directions and progress in this field.METHODS We reviewed studies on DE or cognitive impairment published between 2004 and 2023.The latter were used to identify the most frequent keywords in the keyword analysis and explore the hotspots and trends of DE.RESULTS Scientometric analysis revealed 1308 research papers on DE,a number that increased annually over the past 20 years,and that the primary topics explored were domain distribution,knowledge structure,evolution,and emergence of research topics related to DE.The inducing factors,comorbidities,pathogenesis,treatment,and animal models of DE help clarify its occurrence,development,and treatment.An increasing number of studies on DE may be a result of the recent increase in patients with diabetes,unhealthy lifestyles,and unhealthy eating habits,which have aggravated the incidence of this disease.CONCLUSION We identified the main inducing factors and comorbidities of DE,though other complex factors undoubtedly increase social and economic burdens.These findings provide vital references for future studies. 展开更多

Recent studies have focused on wetlands due to their benefits for human spiritual satisfaction and mental health.This paper conducted a scientometric analysis of 2,388 studies published in the Web of Science database between 2002 and 2022.Using VOSviewer,Origin,and CiteSpace software,this study identified research hotspots and emerging trends in wetland research.The analysis revealed an upward trend in global wetland research publications,with notable contributions from researchers in the United States,China,Australia,Canada,and India.Network keyword co-occurrence analysis highlighted primary research themes,including constructed wetlands,climate change,wastewater treatment,phytoremediation,restoration,and hydrology.The United States emerged as the central hotspot for wetland research,with China,Canada,Australia,and other countries following.Given the growing recognition of wetlands’importance,wetland research is expected to gain even more global attention.Moreover,improvements in the quality of wetland tourism research are recommended,as most related publications have low citation rates.This paper provides a methodological overview of scientometric techniques applicable to global wetland research,offering scholars a framework for using scientometric analysis to enhance their future research.The increasing recognition of wetlands’crucial role in human well-being,encompassing both spiritual satisfaction and mental health,has led to a surge in research interest in this field.This study presents a comprehensive scientometric analysis of 2,388 wetland-related publications indexed in the Web of Science database between 2002 and 2022.Employing VOSviewer,Origin,and CiteSpace software,we mapped research hotspots and identified emerging trends within global wetland research.Our analysis reveals a significant upward trend in the volume of publications,highlighting the growing international attention to wetland ecosystems.The United States,China,Australia,Canada,and India have emerged as leading contributors to this research landscape.A network keyword co-occurrence analysis identified core research themes such as constructed wetlands,climate change,wastewater treatment,phytoremediation,ecological restoration,and hydrology.The United States is a central hub for wetland research,with China,Canada,and Australia also demonstrating substantial research activity.Given the escalating importance of wetlands in addressing global challenges,this research area is expected to attract further scholarly attention.We recommend a greater emphasis on enhancing the quality and impact of wetland tourism research,which currently exhibits low citation rates.Furthermore,this paper provides a methodological framework,demonstrating the application of scientometric techniques in global wetland research,thus empowering scholars to utilise such analytical approaches to refine their research.Our study offers a valuable and comprehensive overview of the key research areas,emerging topics,and influential contributors within the field of global wetland research. 展开更多

Mapping the Research Landscape of Language Development in Autistic Children: A Preliminary Scientometric Analysis

Children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD)often encounter difficulties in language learning and utilization,a concern that has gained significant academic attention,particularly given the widespread occurrence of ASD globally.Previous reviews,however,have relied on empirical observations rather than a more rigorous selection criterion.This preliminary study seeks to systematize the scientific knowledge base regarding language development in autistic children by utilizing the analysis tool Citespace 6.2.R5.We visualized and analyzed research patterns and trends regarding autism by drawing data from the Web of Science.Through document citation and emerging trend analyses,seven key research clusters and their chronological associations are identified,along with research hotspots such as language disorder diagnosis and intervention,social communication,language acquisition,and multilingual and multicultural influences.Research findings show that there exist some issues with the current research,including small sample sizes,the need for further investigation into receptive language development,and a lack of cross-cultural comparative studies.Meanwhile,the scope and depth of interdisciplinary research on language development in autistic children also need to be further enhanced.The research contributes to the extant literature by providing valuable references for autism researchers and practitioners. 展开更多

AIM:To provide a scientometric analysis in the field of glaucoma.METHODS:A bibliometric method was used to obtain a view of the scientific production in field of glaucoma by data extracted from the Institute for Scientific Information(ISI) from 1993 to 2013.Specific parameters were retrieved from the ISI.Articles about glaucoma were analyzed regarding the topics' structure,history,and document relationships using HistCite software.Also,the trends in the most influential publications and authors were analyzed.RESULTS:The number of articles was constantly increasing,and most highly cited articles addressed clinical and epidemiologic topics in this field.During the past three years,there has been a trend towards genomic research studies and also more molecular translational research.CONCLUSION:This was the first scientometric report on glaucoma,analyzing the characteristics of papers and the trends in scientific production.A constant increase was observed in the number of papers,while the subject of papers had a shift in the past three years towards genomic research studies. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Postoperative ileus(POI)is a common complication after abdominal surgery with high morbidity,which hinders patient recovery,prolongs hospitalization,and increases healthcare costs.Therefore,POI has become a global public health challenge.POI triggering is multifactorial.Autonomic and hormonal mechanisms are generally involved in POI pathogenesis.Recent studies have shown that beta adrenergic signaling of enteric glia is a POI trigger.Currently,the status quo,trends,and frontiers of global research on POI remain unclear.AIM To explore the current status,trends,and frontiers of POI research from 2011 to the present based on bibliometric analysis.METHODS Publications published on POI research from 2011 to 2023 were retrieved on June 1,2023,from the Web of Science Core Collection.CiteSpace 6.2.R2 and VOSviewer were used to conduct bibliometric visualization.RESULTS In total,778 POI records published from 2011 to 2023 were retrieved.Over the past few decades,the annual cumulative number of related articles has linearly increased,with China and the United States of America contributing prominently.All publications were from 59 countries and territories.China and the University of Bonn were the top contributing country and institution,respectively.Neurogastroenterology&Motility was the most prolific journal.The Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery had the highest number of citations.Wehner Sven was the most productive author.Burst keywords(e.g.,colon,prolonged ileus,acupuncture,paralytic ileus,pathophysiology,rectal cancer,gastrointestinal function,risk)and a series of reference citation bursts provided evidence for the research frontiers in recent years.CONCLUSION This study demonstrates trends in the published literature on POI and provides new insights for researchers.It emphasizes the importance of multidisciplinary cooperation in the development of this field. 展开更多

The digital revolution in agriculture has introduced data-driven decision-making,where artificial intelligence,especially machine learning(ML),helps analyze large and varied data sources to improve soil quality and crop growth indices.Thus,a thorough evaluation of scientific publications from 2007 to 2024 was conducted via the Scopus and Web of Science databases with the PRISMA guidelines to determine the realistic role of ML in soil health and crop improvement under the SDGs.In addition,the present review focused to identify and analyze the trends,challenges,and opportunities associated with the successful implementation of ML in agriculture.The assessment of various databases clearly revealed that ML implementation depends on crop management,while its limited potential in terms of soil health was explored.ML models,such as random forest and XGBoost,have demonstrated high accuracies of up to 99%in crop yield prediction and disease detection.Advanced ML frameworks,including the SHIDS-ADLT and EfficientNetB3,have improved soil health monitoring and plant disease classification.Irrigation management using ML has achieved over 50%water savings and irrigation efficiency by 10%-35%.These findings highlight the potential of ML to improve sustainable agricultural practices and soil health.A significant improvement discussed in this review is AutoML,which simplifies ML model implementation by automating feature selection,model selection,and hyperparameter tuning,reducing dependency on ML expertise.The integration of ML with remote sensing,Internet of Things(IoT),and big data analytics is expected to further transform the precision agriculture and real-time decisionmaking approaches to optimize resource utilization.Conclusively,the present review offers a quantitative perspective on the evolution of ML in agriculture,soil health management,crop yield prediction,and resource optimization. 展开更多

BACKGROUND Gastric cancer(GC)is the sixth most common cancer and third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide.Current treatments mainly rely on surgery-and chemotherapy-based systemic;however,the prognosis remains poor for advanced disease.Recent studies have suggested that immunotherapy has significant potential in cancer therapy;thus,GC immunotherapy may improve quality of life and survival for patients with this disease.AIM To provide a comprehensive overview of the knowledge structure and research hotspots of GC immunotherapy.METHODS We conducted a bibliometric analysis of publications on immunotherapy related to GC in the Web of Science Core Collection database.We analyzed 2013 publications from 1999 to February 1,2023,using the VOSviewer and CiteSpace software.We assessed publication and citation distributions using the WoS platform and explored research countries,institutions,journals,authors,references,and keywords(co-occurrence,timeline view,and burst analysis).In addition,we examined 228 trials on immunotherapy,137 on adoptive cell therapy,274 on immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICIs),and 23 on vaccines from ClinicalTrials.gov and the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform.The Impact Index Per Article for the top ten high-cited papers collected from Reference Citation Analysis(RCA)are presented.RESULTS Our bibliometric analysis revealed that the study of immunotherapy in GC has developed rapidly in recent years.China accounted for almost half the publications,followed by the United States.The number of publications in recent years has been growing continuously,and most institutions and authors with the most publications are from China.The main keywords or clusters identified were“tumor microenvironment”,“adoptive immunotherapy”,“dendritic therapy”,and“microsatellite instability”.CONCLUSION Our analysis of 2013 publications indicated that immunotherapy for GC has led to several new developments in recent years.Considerable progress has been made in vaccinations,immune checkpoint therapy,and adoptive cellular therapy.In particular,ICIs and chimeric antigen receptor T-cells are novel options for the treatment of GC.We suggest that the combination of ICIs,chemotherapy,targeted therapy,and other immunotherapies should be the primary research direction in the future. 展开更多

Britton Chance was a pioneer in many scientifc fields such as enzymatic reaction kinetis,bioenergetics,metabolism,in vivo NMr,and biophotonics.As an engineer,physical chemist,physicist,physiologist,biophysicist,biochemist,innovator and educator,he had worked indiversifed fields over extended periods bet ween 1926 until his death in 2010,at the age of 97.Inorder to illustrate his scientific career and great impact on research from a new perspective,weemploy scientometric analysis tools to analyze the publications of Britton Chance with datadownloaded from the ISI Citation Indexes in April 2013.We included articles,reviews andproceding papers but excluded meeting abstracts.In total,we obtained 1023 publication recordswith 1236 authors in 266 joumals with 17,114 citations from 1945 to 2013.We show the annualpublications and citations that Britton Chance received from 1945 to 2013,and generate HistCitemaps on the basis of the global citations(GCS)and local(sel)citations(LCS)to show thecitation relationships among the top-30 publications of Britton Chance.Metabolism and the development of physical methods to probe it appear to be the commecting thread of the lifelongresearch of Britton Chance.Furthermore,we generate the joumal map and co-authorship maptoshow the broad scope of research topics and collaborators and the high impacts of the scientificoeuvre of Britton Chance ranging from physics,engineering,chemistry and biology to medicine. 展开更多

Single Pilot Operations(SPO),as a NextGen concept of operation,can save both crew costs and human resources for airlines,and has attracted the attention of aviation researchers.To explore in advance the problems that the introduction of SPO into the aviation system would bring,the Human-Centered Design(HCD)approach has been widely used in the development of SPO.A systematic review of the progress of HCD approach in SPO research can promote further development of SPO.In this paper,the literature resources of SPO were firstly retrieved from scientific research databases by subject search and were used as the input of scientometric analysis to obtain the highly cited literature,the number of annual publications,and the co-authorship network,which enables readers to understand the research trends and research groups of current SPO.Secondly,the development,application,and research process of the HCD approach were introduced in detail,and the progress of the HCD approach in SPO research was reviewed systematically from three aspects:concept design,function allocation,and system evaluation.Finally,limitations of current SPO research and future research directions for applying the HCD approach to SPO were also discussed. 展开更多

Road workers exposed to asphalt fumes face potential health hazards, while the emissions also adversely affect the atmospheric environment. Investigation into the determination of asphalt fume components, the impact of exposure, and inhibition strategies have gained significant attention. This paper conducted an analysis based on the publications from 1998 to 2024 on asphalt fumes, elucidating the knowledge landscape of asphalt fume research. The cooperative features, literature classification, and journal sources in the field are systematically examined. Current research focuses on topics such as composition and emission characterization of asphalt fumes, collection and detection of asphalt fumes, exposure to asphalt fumes and their health effects, and sustainable asphalt technologies and emissions control. Additionally, this paper proposes trends in the asphalt fume research field;it outlines future research directions, offering theoretical guidance for studying the impact and inhibition of asphalt fumes. 展开更多

Food traceability is an important aspect of the food safety supply chain to ensure efficient tracking of produce to check contamination and other foodborne diseases.The health and nutrition response after the Covid-19 pandemic requires a robust and diverse food supply chain in which traceability could play a major role.Since it is an emerging field of study with growing interest in the technological front,it is important to study the scientific trend and research activities.This study provides an important insight into the food safety value chain response towardsmodern food safetymanagement systems through scientometric analysis.Scopus databasewas used to retrieve the documents from the year 1992–2021.The research papers and conference paperswere only chosen.Vosviewer software was used to carry out the scientometric analysis.The distribution and growth trend of documents,country-level distribution of publications,the relationship between authors and co-authors,etc.,were analyzed.The intensity of publications from different countries and the collaborations was analyzed using bibliometrix R-package.The year-wise research publication showed a rapid increase in the researchers conducted on traceability systems to enhance food safety from 2014 onwards,mainly from the USA and China.However,the research appeared to be in the developing phase compared to other technology implementation and automation advancements. 展开更多

The technical challenges associated with deep underground space activities have become increasingly significant.Among these challenges,one major concern is the assessment of rockburst risks and the instability of rock masses.Extensive research has been conducted by numerous scholars to mitigate the risks and prevent occurrences of rockburst through various assessment methods.Rockburst incidents commonly occur during the excavation of hard rock in underground environments,posing severe threats to personnel safety,equipment integrity,and operational continuity.Thus,it is crucial to systematically document real cases of rockburst,allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the underlying mechanisms and triggering conditions.This understanding will contribute to the advancement of rockburst prediction and prevention methods.Proper selection of an appropriate rockburst assessment method is a fundamental aspect in underground operations.However,there is a limited number of studies that summarize and compare different prediction and prevention methods of rockburst.This paper aims to address this gap by analyzing global trends using CiteSpace software since 1990.It discusses rockburst classification and characteristics,comprehensively reviews research findings related to rockburst prediction,including empirical,simulation,mathematical modeling,and microseismic monitoring methods.Additionally,the paper presents a compilation of current rockburst prevention measures.Notably,the paper emphasizes the significance of control strategies,which provide key insights into the effective utilization of stored energy within rock.Finally,the paper concludes by suggesting six directions for implementing intelligent management techniques to mitigate hazards during underground operations and reduce the probability of rockburst incidents. 展开更多

The ever-increasing number of accidents is detrimental to the sustainable objectives of work zones.Exploring the causes for work zone safety(WZS)issues,countermeasures,and effectiveness is significant to enhance the WZS.Therefore,this research aims to iden tify the factors influencing the WZS,identify the established countermeasures,examine the effectiveness of countermeasures,and develop a decision support framework to enhance WZS.This study addresses the issue by utilizing the Scopus database and the VOSViewer data mining tool.A Bibliometric search followed by a Scientometric analysis was conducted to identify the highly researched areas.Qualitative content analysis was performed by exploiting the results,findings,and discussions from influential articles.A systematic cod ing process was carried out by employing Nvivo software to establish factors that influence the WZS and possible countermeasures.The most influencing factors were driver speeding,inattention,non-compliance to traffic control measures,poor work zone(WZ)layout,lane closures,and adverse weather condi tions.Highly discussed countermeasures include changeable/variable/dynamic message signs,advance traveler information systems(ATIS),channelizing devices,merge guidance and police enforcement presence.Further,a framework to support WZS decision-making is developed to assist industry practitioners in making informed decisions on WZS.The aca demic community can benefit from identifying the core literature related to urban WZS and knowledge gaps that need to address in the future. 展开更多

Social infrastructure has become an important element for measuring national economic development and social benefits that are usually financed in the form of government grants,private investment,and public‒private partnerships(PPPs).However,social infrastructure PPPs have attracted considerable public debate due to their low profitability and complex operational demands.This study aims to answer the question,“are PPPs still an answer for social infrastructure?”,from the perspectives of the body of knowledge,application status,and prospects.Initially,an iterative search and review procedure and a scientometric analysis were performed to systematically screen the literature and to structure the body of knowledge of the social infrastructure PPPs literature.Furthermore,the application status and trends were analyzed to further explore the studied countries/regions,application sectors,and research topics.Results show that PPPs still have valuable application potential for delivering social infrastructure despite their mixed results across different topics.Six main research themes and the corresponding research trends were also identified,namely,financing and economics viability,risk management,performance management,contract and relationship management,governance and regulation,and facilitating and hindering factors.These findings offer practitioners and researchers a comprehensive overview and constructive guidance on social infrastructure PPPs. 展开更多
