Large-angle stimulated Raman scattering(LA-SRS)in a longitudinally inhomogeneous plasma with a transverse density modulation is studied using a three-wave coupled model and numerical simulations. The simulations show that the scattering angle of SRS in a longitudinally inhomogeneous plasma can be significantly affected by transverse density modulation.Under transverse density modulation conditions, the laser focuses into underdense regions, owing to the transversely modulated refractive index. The angle of LA-SRS,neither a purely 90° angle side scattering nor purely backscattering,is almost consistent with the specific angle at which the density inhomogeneity vanishes. In modulated plasmas, the nonuniform distribution of laser intensity shifts the regions of scattering and gain compared with those in uniform plasmas, ultimately affecting the laser transmission.SRS is suppressed in weakly modulated regimes, whereas it is enhanced under strong modulation conditions, and a theoretical criterion distinguishing between strong and weak modulation is established. 展开更多

This paper describes the experimental analysis and preliminary investigation of the predictability of pitch angle scattering(PAS) events through the electron cyclotron emission(ECE)radiometer signals at the ADITYA-Upgrade(ADITYA-U) tokamak. For low-density discharges at ADITYA-U, a sudden abnormal rise is observed in the ECE signature while other plasma parameters are unchanged. Investigations are done to understand this abrupt rise that is expected to occur due to PAS. The rise time is as fast as 100 μs with a single step and/or multiple step rise in ECE radiometer measurements. This event is known to limit the on-axis energy of runaway electrons. Being a repetitive event, the conditions of its repetitive occurrence can be investigated, thereby exploring the possibility of it being triggered and surveyed as an alternate runaway electron mitigation plan. Functional parameterization of such events with other discharge parameters is obtained and the possibility to trigger these events is discussed.PREDICT code is used to investigate the possible interpretations for the PAS occurrence through modeling and supporting the ECE observations. The trigger values so obtained experimentally are set as input criteria for PAS occurrence. Preliminary modeling investigations provide reliable consistency with the findings. 展开更多

This paper reports that an experimental investigation of fast pitch angle scattering (FPAS) of runaway electrons in the EAST tokamak has been performed. From the newly developed infrared detector (HgCdTe) diagnostic system, the infrared synchrotron radiation emitted by relativistic electrons can be obtained as a function of time. The FPAS is analysed by means of the infrared detector diagnostic system and the other correlative diagnostic systems (including electron-cyclotron emission, hard x-ray, neutrons). It is found that the intensity of infrared synchrotron radiation and the electron-cyclotron emission signal increase rapidly at the time of FPAS because of the fast increase of pitch angle and the perpendicular velocity of the energetic runaway electrons. The Parail and Pogutse instability is a possible mechanism for the FPAS. 展开更多

The aging behavior of Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloys with high Cu/Mg was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) using synchrotron radiation. TEM study reveals that the major strengthening phases of the alloy after aging at 160?C for 10 h are Ω and less θ′. SAXS study shows that the scattering patterns are composed of several concentric circles at the beginning of aging process, which is replaced by the butterfly-wings scattering patterns with the increase of aging time. The butterfly-wings scattering patterns are composed of several branches. The angles between the branches are roughly equal to that between the habit planes of precipitates. The evolution of Guinier radius with aging time indicates the good coarsening resistance of the precipitates. The evolution of integrated intensity is consistent with the classical two-step precipitation process. 展开更多

The evolution of microstructure parameters (precipitate size and volume fraction) for two types of Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys (7075 and 7055) during aging has been studied by synchrotron-radiation small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS).The results show that the precipitates are only a few nanorneters for both alloys ageing even at higher temperature of 160℃ for 72 h (4.44 and 5.82 nm, respectively). The maximum of the precipitate volume fraction increases with in creasing Zn content and is about 0.023-0.028 and 0.052-0.054, respectively. The coarsening of precipitate is consistent with LSW (Lifshitz-Slyozov-Wagner) model even at the initial stage where volume fraction is still varying. The activation energy of coarsening regime has been determined to be about 1.22±0.02 eV and 1.25±0.02 eV for alloys 7075 and 7055, respectively. 展开更多

In this article, we report the results of our detailed investigations of the growth kinetics of zero-dimensional nanocrystals as well as one-dimensional nanorods by the combined use of small angel X-ray scattering (SAXS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) along with other physical techniques. The study includes growth kinetics of gold nanocrystals formed by the reduction of HAuCl4 by tetrakis(hydroxymethyl) phosphonium chloride in aqueous solution, of CdSe nanocrystals formed by the reaction of cadmium stearate and selenium under solvothermal conditions, and of ZnO nanorods formed by the reaction of zinc acetate with sodium hydroxide under solvothermal conditions in the absence and presence of capping agents. The growth of gold nanocrystals does not follow the diffusion-limited Ostwald ripening, and instead follows a Sigmoidal rate curve. The heat change associated with the growth determined by isothermal titration calorimetry is about 10 kcal·mol^-1 per I nm increase in the diameter of the nanocrystals. In the case of CdSe nanocrystals also, the growth mechanism deviates from diffusion-limited growth and follows a combined model containing both diffusion and surface reaction terms. Our study of the growth kinetics of uncapped and poly(vinyl pyrollidone) (PVP)-capped ZnO nanorods has yielded interesting insights. We observe small nanocrystals next to the ZnO nanorods after a lapse of time in addition to periodic focusing and defocusing of the width of the length distribution. These observations lend support to the diffusion-limited growth model for the growth of uncapped ZnO nanorods. Accordingly, the time dependence on the length of uncapped nanorods follows the L3 law as required for diffusion-limited Ostwald ripening. The PVP-capped nanorods, however, show a time dependence, which is best described by a combination of diffusion (L^3) and surface reaction (L^2) terms. 展开更多

The Dividing Distribution Function (DDF) method is one of the methods by which the particle size distribution of ultrafine powder can be evaluated from its small angle X-ray scattering data. In this paper, the stability of the solution obtained from DDF method has been investigated through optimizing the coefficient matrix, introducing a damping factor and a least square treatment. All calculations were accomplished with a microcomputer. Elongated microvoids, internal fibrillar structure, and edge scattering from both surface refraction cause an equatorial streak in small angle X-ray scattering. A model for analyzing the edge scattering of fibers is proposed. Simulation results indicate that the intensity of edge scattering from surface refraction of a cylindrical fiber is strong and makes an important contribution to the equatorial streak. Two factors influence edge scattering intensity. One is the sample-to-detector distance (D); edge scattering intensity increases with increasing D. The equatorial streak becomes weak when D is shortened. The other factor is the refraction index. Edge scattering intensity increases as the real component of the refraction index decreases. In experiment, weak or even no equatorial streaks were found for samples measured in a roughly index-matching fluid. Edge scattering can be eliminated or weakened, and it can be calculated by comparing the intensities of a cylindrical fiber when it is measured in air and in index-matching fluid. The simulation data are basically in agreement with the experimental data. 展开更多

Synchrotron microfocus small angle X-ray scattering was used to investigate the nanostructure and microscopic variation of eggshells. It uses a microbeam allowing the ability to probe interactions between the organic and inorganic components at nanometer level and is ideal for mapping over small areas to obtain a detailed analysis of structural variations. Thin sections of eggshells were scanned from the shell membrane (inner) to the cuticle (outer) surface. The data collected was used to produce two-dimensional maps showing microscopic changes within the different layers of the eggshell. The structural alterations ap- parently could have implications at the macroscopic level of the resulting eggshell. As the organic matrix is embedded within the eggshell this may contribute to the variations observed in calcite crystal form and texture, Structural information obtained about a biomaterial at different length scales is important in relating the structure to its functional properties. This knowledge and the principles behind the formation of biomaterials could be used in the attempt of bioengineering new systems. 展开更多

The kinetics of I-->N transition of a side chain nematic polymethacrylate has been studied by small angle depolarized light scattering intensity measurements using a charge coupled device linear image sensor. The polymer shows the transition temperatures K52N79I in degreesC, The H-v scattering intensity T(q,t) during the transition I (at 80.2degreesC)-->N (at 75.8degreesC) shows that T(q) is independent of q for all t, and during the initial stage (in 6 s) T(t) increases exponentially with t. In the later stage of the transition T(t) approaches a saturation value in 2 min. This experimental result indicates that the I-->N transition of a liquid crystalline polymer is a spinodal type of phase transition mediated by orientation fluctuation. 展开更多

The existence of an evolving microstructure in a 2.9 vol% fumed silica in paraffin oil and polyisobutylene is demonstrated experimentally and via rheological modeling during steady state and large amplitude oscillatory shear flow. The continuously evolving, rebuilding, and breaking down of the microstructure is shown, and correlated through the rheology experiments, thixo-elastovisco-plastic modeling, and small angle light scattering (SALS). Nowadays, ultrafine explosives are widely used in military fields. Ultrafine 2,2',4,4',6,6'-hexanitrostilbene(HNS) has emerged as an optimal primer for explosion foil initiators due to its excellent thermal stability and high-voltage short-pulse initiation performance. However, the solid phase ripening of ultrafine HNS leads to a degradation in its impact detonation performance. Previous studies have indicated that residual dimethyl formamide(DMF), which is present in ultrafine HNS prepared using the recrystallization method, affects ultrafine HNS ripening. The mechanism of residual solvent effects on solid phase ripening of ultrafine HNS is unclear. In this work, the specific surface area(SSA) derived from small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS) was utilized for kinetic fitting analysis to explore the mechanism by which residual solvents enhance the solid phase ripening of ultrafine HNS. The results of the SSA measured by insitu SAXS under conditions of 150℃ for 40 h revealed that the sample with 0.2% residual DMF exhibited a 21.51% decrease in SSA, whereas the sample with only 0.04% residual DMF showed a decrease of 15.66%.Furthermore, the higher amounts of residual DMF accelerated the reduction in SSA with time. Kinetic fitting analysis demonstrated that reducing residual DMF would lower both the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor, consequently decreasing the rate constant of solid phase ripening. The mechanism was speculated that it primarily facilitated the Ostwald ripening(OR). Additionally, contrast variation small angle X-ray scattering(CV-SAXS) confirmed that coating of ultrafine HNS particles is an effective method for inhibiting ripening, significantly reducing both the rate and extent of ripening of ultrafine HNS. This study predicts how residual solvents impact the solid phase ripening process of ultrafine HNS and proposes strategies for enhancing the long-term stability of ultrafine explosives. 展开更多

In this paper, a generalized three-dimensional(3D) scattering channel model for macrocellular land mobile environments is considered. This model simultaneously describes angular arrival of multi-path signals in the azimuth and elevation planes in an environment where uniformly distributed scatterers are assumed to be present in hemispheroids around the base station(BS) and mobile station(MS). Using this channel model, we first derive the closed-form expression for the joint and marginal probability density functions of the angle-of-arrival and time-of-arrival measured at the BS and the MS corresponding to the azimuth and elevation angles. Next, we derive an expression for the Doppler spectral distribution caused by motion of the MSs. Furthermore, we analyze the performance of multiple-input multiple-output antenna systems numerically. The results show that the proposed 3D scattering channel model performs better than previously proposed two-dimensional(2D) models for indoor and outdoor environments. We compare the results with previous scattering channel models and measurement results to validate the generalizability of our model. 展开更多

The low-wavenumber components in the gradient of full waveform inversion(FWI)play a vital role in the stability of the inversion. However, when FWI is implemented in some high frequencies and current models are not far away from the real velocity model,an excessive number of low-wavenumber components in the gradient will also reduce the convergence rate and inversion accuracy. To solve this problem, this paper firstly derives a formula of scattering angle weighted gradient in FWI,then proposes a hybrid gradient. The hybrid gradient combines the conventional gradient of FWI with the scattering angle weighted gradient in each inversion frequency band based on an empirical formula derived herein.Using weighted hybrid mode,we can retain some low-wavenumber components in the initial lowfrequency inversion to ensure the stability of the inversion, and use more high-wavenumber components in the high-frequency inversion to improve the convergence rate. The results of synthetic data experiment demonstrate that compared to the conventional FWI,the FWI based on the proposed hybrid gradient can effectively reduce the low-wavenumber components in the gradient under the premise of ensuring inversion stability. It also greatly enhances the convergence rate and inversion accuracy, especially in the deep part of the model. And the field marine seismic data experiment also illustrates that the FWI based on hybrid gradient(HGFWI)has good stability and adaptability. 展开更多

Recently, we reported a series of reversibly interlocked polymer networks(RILNs), whose mechanical robustness and functionalities improvement was believed to be derived from topological interlocking of two sub-networks, although the direct evidence for the deduction is still lacking. Herein, a specially-designed RILNs system, in which the inter-component hydrogen bonds can be shielded as needed, was prepared and used to study the micro-structures of RILNs, aiming to verify the existence of mechanical interlocking in RILNs. By changing the pH of the swelling solvent, the effect exerted by the inter-component non-covalent bonds was eliminated, so detailed information of the networks structure was exposed. The small angle X-ray scattering(SAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering(SANS) results indicated that swelling-induced structural evolution of the two sub-networks mutually affected each other, even when the inter-component hydrogen bonds were absent, proving the presence of topological interlocking. The findings may help to draw a more accurate physical image and reveal the detailed structureproperty relationship of RILNs. 展开更多

Very Small Angle Neutron Scattering (VSANS) is an upgrade of the traditional Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) technique which can cover three orders of magnitude of length scale from one nanometer to one micrometer. It is a powerful tool for structure calibration in polymer science, biology, material science and condensed matter physics. Since the first VSANS instrument, Dll in Grenoble, was built in 1972, new collimation techniques, focusing optics (multi-beam converging apertures, material or magnetic lenses, and focusing mirrors) and higher resolution detectors combined with the long flight paths and long incident neutron wavelengths have been developed. In this paper, a detailed review is given of the development, principles and application conditions of various VSANS techniques. Then, beam current gain factors are calculated to evaluate those techniques. A VSANS design for the China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) is thereby presented. 展开更多
