ON THE EVOLUTION OF LARGE SCALE STRUCTURES IN THREE-DIMENSIONAL MIXING LAYERS

In this paper, several mathematical models for the large scale structures in some special kinds of mixing layers, which might be practically useful for enhancing the mixing, are proposed. First, the linear growth rate of the large scale structures in the mixing layers was calculated. Then, using the much improved weakly non-linear theory, combined with the energy method, the non-linear evolution of large scale structures in two special mixing layer configurations is calculated. One of the mixing lavers has equal magnitudes of the upstream velocity vectors, while the angles between the velocity vectors and the trailing edge were pi /2 - phi and pi /2 + phi, respectively. The other mixing layer was generated by a splitter-plate with a 45-degree-sweep trailing edge. 展开更多

Mill scale structure and damp heat corrosion performance of four 510L hot-rolled strips

In this study, the matrix structure, state and composition of the mill scales of four typical domestically made 510L hot-rolled strips were observed and analyzed by means of optical microscopy (OM) ,scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The corrosion behavior of the steels with and without mill scales were investigated by means of hot-humid corrosion tests under the condition of relative humidity ( RH ) of 95% at 50℃ and 70℃, respectively. The results show that the matrix structures, state, composition and thickness of mill scales vary in the strips. The rusting starting time of the specimens with scales is generally a bit longer than that of the specimens without scales, but their corrosion mass-gain is higher. For these two kinds of specimens ,their corrosion rate increases significantly with the increase of temperature. The rusting behavior of the 510L strips produced by various plants is different due to the variations of hot-rolling processes and designed chemical compositions. Various relevant aspects should be taken into account in the evaluation of the corrosion behavior of hot-rolled strips. 展开更多

Cross-scale structures fabrication via hybrid lithography for nanolevel positioning

Planar cross-scale structures encode position and posture,enabling nanometer-level accuracy and multi-scale cascaded precision,emerging as a potential sensing device for semiconductor manufacturing and inspection systems.However,the fabrication of cross-scale hybrid structures,which is the integration of structures spanning three orders of magnitude in feature dimensions(500 nm-1.5 mm)on single substrates,still faces challenges.This requires fabrication of submicron-periodic encoder arrays(reflective regions)and micron-scale non-periodic absolute code tracks(transmissive regions)while maintaining directional consistency.Herein,we demonstrate a mask-interference hybrid lithography method to generate cross-scale structures.The multi-step lithography process integrates interference lithography for fabricating subwavelength periodic structures and mask lithography for patterning millimeter and micrometer-scale non-periodic structures.Alignment marks etched on the mask enable direction consistency between structural zones.The transmissive and reflective structures are differentially processed through region-specific etching and deposition.The effectiveness of this process in realizing the fabrication of hybrid structures is validated through experimental characterization.Moreover,the inherent process scalability establishes a versatile platform for creating multifunctional photonic architectures. 展开更多

The effects of different convective parameterization,explicit moisture schemes and surface heat- ing on the meso-β scale structure of a squall line system are investigated,by using an improved mesoscale model.It is found that the successful prediction of mesoscale convective systems hinges up- on not only the sub-grid scale convection,but also the resolvable scale phase change processes and the diurnal variation in the boundary layer.The simultaneous operation of the Fritsch-Chappell convective scheme with parameterized moist downdrafts and the prognostic equations for cloud water (ice) and rainwater (snow) seems to be essential in simulating realistically MCSs and reducing or eliminating the unrealistic development of the CISK-like instability associated with the squall line system. 展开更多

Oil and gas exploration and production is the most important and key segment in the whole business chain of the petroleum industry.Therefore,oil companies always put much emphasis on making scientific and reasonable decisions about investment scale and structure in the upstream sector,so that they can minimise business risks and obtain high returns.According to the system dynamics theories and methods and based on the actual results from an oil company's practice in China,a system dynamics model is built in this paper for analyzing and forecasting the upstream investment scale and structure for an oil company.This model was used to analyze the investment effect of a large oil company in China, and the results showed that the total upstream investment scale will decline slowly in a short period and the investment proportion of different parts should be adjusted if some influencing factors are taken into account.This application practice was compared with the actual data and indicated that the system dynamics(SD) model presented in this paper is a useful tool for analyzing and forecasting of upstream investment scale and structure of oil companies in their investment decisions. 展开更多

The quantitative measurements are acquired by the use of a LDV. It is shown that the development of the coherent structures can be greatly influenced by upstream artificial perturbations and as a result the mixing in the layer can be controlled. Like vortex merging, vortex splitting is also a common evolu- tion pattern in the development of the coherent structures. 展开更多

Uniformitarianism,summarised as‘the present is the key to the past’,has been successfully applied to interpret the geological record.An important variation of this principle is that while the present can be the key to interpreting the past,the past can be useful to more comprehensively and holistically document the present.In this study,for the first time,these principles are explored at two scales:macroscopically/mesoscopically where traditionally Uniformitarianism has been applied(in this paper,using coastal beach-to-dune stratigraphy,and by bubble sand,smallscale sedimentary structures,and silt-sized inter-granular deposits therein),and ultra-microscopically(using patina,a thin crust on weathered glass).The validity of the scalar variation has relevance to interpreting beach sequences where individual lithological,micro-lithological,structural,and micro-structural features in modern beach-to-dune systems are described and compared with‘fossil’sequences.Expression of Uniformitarianism also occurs at ultrasmall-scales in patina using~100-year-old glass found at Cossack,Western Australia and experimentally-produced ultra-microscopic patina.Features of‘mature’patina and glass corrosion have been highlighted through geochemical and hydrochemical processes,and these have been compared with corrosion and incipient,early-stage development of experimentally-produced ultra-microscopic patina. 展开更多

The physical mechanism of the formation of the bimodal distribution is discussed. The bimodal structure of the Melyu front system considerably results from atmospheric moisture gradients, though atmospheric temperature gradients are also not negligible. According to the definition of equivalent potential temperature, and by scale analysis, we find that atmospheric equivalent potential temperature gradients, which could be regarded as an indicator of the Meiyu front system, could be mainly attributed to the variations of atmospheric potential temperature gradients with a scaling factor of 1 and moisture gradients multiplied by a scaling factor of an order of about 2.5 × 10^3, which means that small variations of atmospheric moisture gradients could lead to large variations of equivalent potential temperature gradients, and thus large variations of the Meiyu front system. Quantitative diagnostics with a mesoscale simulation data in the vicinity of the Meiyu front system show that moisture gradients contribute to equivalent potential temperature gradients more than potential temperature gradients. 展开更多

It is great important to the health development of urban agglomeration to correctly understand the formation and development law of regional structure of urban agglomeration.Employing the analysis methods like fractal theory and quantitative statistics,coupling with the use of remote sensing images and other spatial data,this article discusses the urban agglomeration of oasis on the northern slope of the Tianshan Mountains in an arid area,and conducts the researches on its city scale,spatial distribution and individual form from 1990 to 2005.The result shows that it has loose hierarchical scale structure and polarization trend of population distribution while its hierarchical scale structure tends to mature.Under the influence of natural conditions,the spatial layout of urban agglomeration of oasis has macro characteristics that suggest cities distributed along oasis edges(dense or sparse),spatially expand along rivers,and cluster around traffic branches.The connectivity among the cities is high and shows an internal organization form of a banding distribution.The whole spatial shape of the internal structure of cities presents a "dumbbell" form,with mononuclear phenomenon receding and multi-nuclear appearing gradually.Individual cities spatially expand along rivers,portraying a long strip appearance.It indicates that the urban agglomeration of oasis shows regular and close structure but with a tendency to be complicated form and the loose structure.In the development of urban agglomeration,the authors recommend that the development of the city with good economic development conditions should be strengthened,and more attention be put into regional planning. 展开更多

Thermodynamic/dynamic modeling of liquid immiscibility in silicates is seriously hindered due to lack of in situ investigation on the structural evolution of the melt.In this work,atomic-scale structural evolution of a classic binary silicate immiscible system,SiO2–TiO2,is tracked by in situ high energy X-ray diffraction(HE-XRD).It is found that both the configuration of[SiO]and the polymerization between them are closely coupled with embedment and extraction of the metallic cations(Ti^4+).[SiO]monomer goes through deficit-oxygen and excess-polymerization before liquid–liquid separation and enables self-healing after liquid–liquid separation,which challenges the traditional cognition that[SiO4]monomer is immutable.Ti4+cations with tetrahedral oxygen-coordination first participate in the network construction before liquid separation.The four-fold Ti–O bond is broken during liquid separation,which may facilitate the movement of Ti4+across the Si–O network to form TiO2-rich nodules.The structural features of nodules were also investigated and they were found highly analogous to that of molten TiO2,which implies a parallel crystallization behavior in the two circumstances.Our results shed light on the structural evolution scenario in liquid immiscibility at atomic scale,which will contribute to constructing a complete thermodynamic/dynamic framework describing the silicate liquid immiscibility systems beyond current models. 展开更多

Time evolution of ionospheric D-region plasmas including the perturbations of electrons and charged aerosol particles is investigated under the conditions of polar mesosphere summer echoes (PMSE). It is shown that the time scale of decay of the electron density is in the order of an hour under typical PMSE conditions, in the majority of cases, the electron density is anticorrelated to the ion density, except that the radius of aerosol particles is greater than 50 nm. Also, the evolutions under varied parameters, such as the amplitude and width of perturbation, the aerosol particle radius, and the altitude of the PMSE occurrence are investigated. The obtained results are useful for interpreting the experimental observations. 展开更多

Aims Research on the appropriate scale structure and spatial layout of ecological,urban,and agricultural spaces and the effective and methodical development and protection of urban space can provide a solid foundation for the sustainable development of the complex socio-economic urban environment.Methods Based on the perspective of a coupled social-ecological system,this paper constructed an assessment model to determine the ecological protection importance and development suitability of urban space,proposed the ecological-urban-agricultural priority for densely populated urban areas,and established the appropriate functional layout of urban space using a priority matrix-based mapping method.Results Through an empirical case study of Shenzhen,this paper determined the optimal scale structure of the types of functional spaces,identified areas of functional conflict,and proposed targeted optimization strategies for functional mismatch areas.The findings show that the appropriate scale ratio of Shenzhen's urban,ecological,and agricultural functions is 5:4:1,which is consistent with the actual structure ratio of Shenzhen's land use trends.Conclusions The proposed method can predict the appropriate scale structure of urban space development and ecological protection based on the comprehensive multi-perspective consideration of social and economic factors to provide a scientific reference for effective decision-making on urban space optimization and sustainable development. 展开更多

These corrections can be used in model applications in which explicit expressions, rather than numerical solutions are needed. The comparison with an interpolation formula proposed by Batchelor, showed that the latter gives surprisingly precise results. Alarm root-cause analysis and alarm prioritization are good for alarm flood reduction. This paper proposes a systematic rationalization method for multivariate correlated alarms to realize the root cause analysis and alarm prioritization. An information fusion based interpretive structural model is constructed according to the data-driven partial correlation coefficient calculation and process knowledge modification. This hierarchical multi-layer model is helpful in abnormality propagation path identification and root-cause analysis. Revised Likert scale method is adopted to determine the alarm priority and reduce the blindness of alarm handling. As a case study, the Tennessee Eastman process is utilized to show the effectiveness and validity of proposed approach. Using Cartesian Slice Plots of a Cosmological Simulation as Input of a Convolutional Neural Network

Using a uniform partitioning of cubic cells,we cover the total volume of aΛCDM cosmological simulation based on particles.We define a visualization cell as a spatial extension of the cubic cell,so that we collect all simulation particles contained in this visualization cell to create a series of Cartesian plots in which the overdensity of matter is clearly visible.We then use these plots as input to a convolutional neural network(CNN)based on the Keras library and TensorFlow for image classification.To assign a class to each plot,we approximate the Hessian of the gravitational potential in the center of the cubic cells.Each selected cubic cell is then assigned a label of 1,2 or 3,depending on the number of positive eigenvalues obtained for the Householder reduction of the Hessian matrix.We apply the CNN to several models,including two models with different visualization volumes,one with a cell size of type L(large)and the other with a cell type S(small).A third model combines the plots of the previous L and S cell types.So far,we have mainly considered a slice parallel to the XY plane to make the plots.The last model is considered based on visualizations of cells that also include slices parallel to the ZX and ZY planes.We find that the accuracy in classification plots is acceptable,and the ability of the models to predict the class works well.These results allow us to demonstrate the aim of this paper,namely that the usual Cartesian plots contain enough information to identify the observed structures of the cosmic web. 展开更多
