Solar sailing is a promising propellant-free approach to propelling spacecraft in space.However, the propelling efficiency of conventional solar sail spacecraft is limited by their areato-mass ratios. This paper proposes a novel design of micro solar sails with area-to-mass ratios above 100 m^(2)/kg for next-generation chip-scale spacecraft. Bilayer thin films developed by Microelectromechanical Systems(MEMS) technologies were patterned into grid microstructures, and theoretical analysis of a sail prototype was conducted. The electro-thermal and thermo-mechanical models of the solar sail in geospace were established by taking effects of Joule heating, solar radiation, and thermal re-emission into consideration, enabling rapid prediction of its threedimensional(3-D) reconfiguration from the as-released two-dimensional(2-D) microstructure.Adjustment of the Chip Sail's acceleration arising from the sail's morphing was also analytically modeled. Fabrication and characterization of the sail prototype made of multiple Al/Ni_(50)Ti_(50) bilayer beams were accomplished. In-situ SEM imaging of the sail prototype in vacuum chamber witnessed an active and continuous 3-D reconfiguration under Joule heating, and over 90° deformation was detected by applying a DC voltage of 0.078 V. Theoretical and experimental work on the solar sail with at least 10 times higher area-to-mass ratios than conventional ones will lay a solid foundation for efficient solar sailing. 展开更多

The Structure and Evolution of Sea Breezes During the Qingdao Olympics Sailing Test Event in 2006 被引量:6

Using data from automatic surface weather stations, buoys, lidar and Doppler, the diurnal variation and the three-dimensional structure of the sea breezes near the sailing sites of the Good Luck Beijing- 2006 Qingdao International Regatta from 18 to 31 August 2006 are analyzed. Results show that excluding rainy days and days affected by typhoon, the sea breezes occur nearly every day during this period. When Qingdao is located at the edge of the subtropical high at 500 hPa, the sea breeze is usually stronger, around 3-4 m s^-1. It starts at around 1100 to 1300 LST and lasts about 6 hours. The direction of the sea breeze tends to be southeasterly. When Qingdao is under the control of the subtropical high, the sea breeze is usually weaker, less than 2.5 m s^-1 throughout the day, and begins later, between 1300 and 1500 LST. In this case, the direction of the sea breeze is variable from easterly to southeasterly. Most sea breezes in Qingdao are very shallow, up to 300 meters deep. Strong sea breezes can reach 1.5 km in depth and can push as far as 100 km inland. If the Huanghai sea breeze moves inland and meets the sea breeze of the Jiaozhou Bay in the western part of Qingdao, the sea breeze will strengthen and form three boundaries due to the interaction of the two sea breezes. 展开更多

In this paper the performance of a BOC-50' sailing yacht model in calm water and in realistic sea states is investigated experimentally. A scaled model of the hull form with the keel-bulb configuration has been tested in the towing tank of the LSMH of NTUA. During the tests the calm water resistance and the dynamic responses, including the added resistance in waves were recorded. Results referring to the resistance, the side force, the CG displacement, the pitch as well as the vertical accelerations of the model at the bow, the CG and the stern are presented. Moreover, by using a Velocity Prediction Program the polar and the stability diagram of the tested sailing yacht were calculated. Useful conclusions about the dynamic behavior of the model were obtained. 展开更多

Significant propellant mass saving can be obtained with the use of complex multiple intermediate flyby maneuvers for conventional propulsion systems,and trip time also decreases for a portion of the proper solar sail missions.This paper discusses the performance of gravity assist(GA)in the time-optimal control problem of solar sailing with respect to sail lightness number and the energy difference between the initial and final orbit in the rendezvous problem in a two-body model,in which the GA is modeled as a substantial change in the velocity of the sailcraft at the GA time.In addition,this paper presents a method to solve the time-optimal problem of solar sailing with GA in a full ephemeris model,which introduces the third body’s gravity in a dynamic equation.This study builds a set of inner constraints that can describe the GA process accurately.Finally,this study presents an example for evaluating the accuracy and rationality of the two-body model’s simplification of GA by comparison with the full ephemeris model. 展开更多

Shortest path routing protocol intends to minimize the total delay between every pair of destination node and source node. However, it is also well-known that shortest path routing suffers from uneven distribution of traffic load, especially in dense wireless networks. Recently, several new routing protocols are proposed in order to balance traffic load among nodes in a network. One of them is Circular Sailing Routing (CSR) which maps nodes on the surface of a sphere and select routes based on surface distances. CSR has been demonstrated with better load balance than shortest path routing via simulations. However, it is still open that what load distribution CSR can achieve. Therefore, in this paper, we theoretically analyze the traffic load distribution of CSR in a dense circular wireless network. Using the techniques developed by Hytti and Virtamo, we are able to derive the traffic load of any point inside the network. We then conduct extensive simulations to verify our theoretical results with grid and random networks. 展开更多

Dynamic Performance of Parallel Dual-Wing Sails for an Unmanned Sailboat with Multiple Navigation States

Unmanned surface vehicles(USVs)play a crucial role in various fields,including ocean climate change monitoring,ma-rine resource exploitation,and ecological environment exploration.Out of the many types of USVs,unmanned sailboats have gained considerable attention for their ability to conduct green,large-scale ocean observations.Building on this concept,this paper proposes an unmanned sailboat propelled by parallel dual-wing sails,which is designed to meet the demands of extensive and three-dimensional marine comprehensive observation and data collection.With a focus on the parallel dual-wing sails,this study particularly investi-gates the effects of variations in the airfoil’s angle of attack and the impact of the spacing ratio between the dual sails on propulsion performance.It further analyzes the influence of one sail’s angle of attack on the performance of the other sail,as well as the flow field between the two sails.For the air navigation and underwater states,the force characteristics of the dual sail under different inflow velocities were investigated.The research findings indicate that,under certain conditions,the thrust coefficient exhibits a trend of first increasing,then decreasing,and finally increasing again with alterations in the angle of attackα.Different single-sail angles of attack have varying impacts on the opposite sail and the flow field between the dual sails.Moreover,the generated forces are positively correlated with inflow velocity in the air navigation and underwater states.The findings reveal that it is possible to reduce drag,mitigate the adverse effects of sail interaction,and thereby enhance the propulsion performance and overall navigational stability of the sailboat by applying an optimal spacing ratio design and adjusting the angle of attack and inflow velocity. 展开更多

The orbits of solar sails can be changed by adjusting the sail’s attitude through external control torques.The resulting momentum will be changed,either provided by a typical attitude control subsystem or by a propellantless device.This paper investigates the extra momentum input and fuel consumption for a typical attitude control subsystem.The minimum-time transfer trajectories are designed for two rendezvous missions using both indirect and direct methods,generating continuous and discrete attitude histories,respectively.The results show that the momentum variation is almost wholly due to the solar radiation pressure.The feasibility of using tip-mounted microthrusters for attitude control is evaluated.The results show that less than0.1 kg of propellant are required for an interplanetary transfer mission when pulsed plasma thrusters with a specific impulse of700 s and a thrust of 150 mN are mounted at the tip of a 20 m square solar sail.The fuel consumptions of two transfer missions indicate that a tip-mounted pulsed plasma thruster is a viable technique for the attitude control of a solar sail. 展开更多
