In recent years, with the rapid development of the Internet and wireless communication technology, wireless Ad hoc networks have received more attention.Due to the limited transmission range and energy of nodes in Ad hoc networks,it is important to establish a reliable and energy-balanced transmission path in Ad hoc networks. This paper proposes an energy-based dynamic routing protocol based on the existing AODV routing protocol, which has the following two aspects of improvement:(1)In the route discovery process,a node selects a suitable route from the minimum energy consumption route and the energy-balanced route designed in this paper according to a“Mark”bit that representing remaining energy of a node.(2)Based on(1),a route interruption update strategy was proposed to restart the route discovery process when node energy was used excessively.Simulation results demonstrate that compared with AODV and other existing routing protocols, proposed algorithm can reduce network energy consumption and balance node energy, thus extending the network lifetime. 展开更多

The energy problem is one of the important problems influencingthe complete application. Sensor nodes use very small batteries as a powersource and replacing them is not an easy task. With this restriction, the sensornodes must conserve their energy and extend the network lifetime as long as possible. Also, these limits motivate much of the research to suggest solutions in alllayers of the protocol stack to save energy. So, energy management efficiencybecomes a key requirement in WSN design. The efficiency of these networks ishighly dependent on routing protocols directly affecting the network lifetime.Clustering is one of the most popular techniques preferred in routing operations. In this work we propose a novel energy-efficient protocol for WSN based on a batalgorithm called ECO-BAT (Energy Consumption Optimization with BAT algorithmfor WSN) to prolong the network lifetime. We use an objective function thatgenerates an optimal number of sensor clusters with cluster heads (CH) to minimizeenergy consumption. The performance of the proposed approach is comparedwith Low-Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy (LEACH) and EnergyEfficient cluster formation in wireless sensor networks based on the Multi-Objective Bat algorithm (EEMOB) protocols. The results obtained are interestingin terms of energy-saving and prolongation of the network lifetime. 展开更多

With the flexible deployment and high mobility of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs)in an open environment, they have generated con-siderable attention in military and civil applications intending to enable ubiquitous connectivity and foster agile communications. The difficulty stems from features other than mobile ad-hoc network(MANET),namely aerial mobility in three-dimensional space and often changing topology. In the UAV network,a single node serves as a forwarding, transmitting, and receiving node at the same time.Typically, the communication path is multi-hop,and routing significantly affects the network’s performance.A lot of effort should be invested in performance analysis for selecting the optimum routing system. With this motivation, this study modelled a new Coati Optimization Algorithm-based Energy-Efficient Routing Process for Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Communication(COAER-UAVC)technique.The presented COAER-UAVC technique establishes effective routes for communication between the UAVs.It is primarily based on the coati characteristics in nature:if attacking and hunting iguanas and escaping from predators.Besides, the presented COAER-UAVC technique concentrates on the design of fitness functions to minimize energy utilization and communication delay.A varied group of simulations was performed to depict the optimum performance of the COAER-UAVC system. The experimental results verified that the COAER-UAVC technique had assured improved performance over other approaches. 展开更多

The evaluation is done along with other metrics such as throughput and packet delivery ratio (PDR). We introduce two more metrics to capture the efficiency of the energy consumption: e-throughput and e-PDR. Both are ratios in relation to the energy. We consider the three low layers of the stack. Three types of routing protocols are used: proactive, reactive, and hybrid. At the MAC and PHY layer, three radio types are considered: 802.11a/b/g. Finally, the number of nodes is varying in random topologies, with nodes being static or mobile. Simulations are conducted using NS3. The parameters of a real network interface card are used. From the results in mobile position scenarios, no protocol is outperforming the others;even if OLSR has the lowest energy consumption, most of the time. However, in constant position scenarios, AODV consumed a lower energy, apart from the scenarios using the 802.11a standard where HWMP energy consumption is the lowest. Regarding the energy efficiency, AODV protocols provided the best e-throughput and OLSR the best e-PDR in overall configurations. A framework for selecting energy-efficient routing protocol depending on network characteristics is proposed at the end. 展开更多

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are important application for safety monitoring in underground coal mines, which are difficult to monitor due to natural conditions. Based on the characteristic of limited energy for WSNs in confined underground area such as coal face and laneway, we presents an energy- efficient clustering routing protocol based on weight (ECRPW) to prolong the lifetime of networks. ECRPW takes into consideration the nodes' residual energy during the election process of cluster heads. The constraint of distance threshold is used to optimize cluster scheme. Furthermore, the protocol also sets up a routing tree based on cluster heads' weight. The results show that ECRPW had better perfor- mance in energy consumption, death ratio of node and network lifetime. 展开更多

A mobile ad hoc network(MANET)involves a group of wireless mobile nodes which create an impermanent network with no central authority and infrastructure. The nodes in the MANET are highly mobile and it results in adequate network topology, link loss, and increase the re-initialization of the route discovery process.Route planning in MANET is a multi-hop communication process due to the restricted transmission range of the nodes.Location aided routing(LAR)is one of the effective routing protocols in MANET which suffers from the issue of high energy consumption.Though few research works have focused on resolving energy consumption problem in LAR,energy efficiency still remains a major design issue. In this aspect, this study introduces an energy aware metaheuristic optimization with LAR(EAMO-LAR)protocol for MANETs.The EAMO-LAR protocol makes use of manta ray foraging optimization algorithm(MRFO)to help the searching process for the individual solution to be passed to the LAR protocol. The fitness value of the created solutions is determined next to pass the solutions to the objective function. The MRFO algorithm is incorporated into the LAR protocol in the EAMO-LAR protocol to reduce the desired energy utilization. To ensure the improved routing efficiency of the proposed EAMO-LAR protocol,a series of simulations take place. The resultant experimental values pointed out the supreme outcome of the EAMO-LAR protocol over the recently compared methods. The resultant values demonstrated that the EAMO-LAR protocol has accomplished effectual results over the other existing techniques. 展开更多

Poor links result in retransmissions and more energy consumption. So link quality is an important issue in the design of routing protocol which is not considered in most traditional clustered routing protocols. A based on energy and link quality's routing protocol( EQRP) is proposed to optimize the clustering mechanism which takes into account energy balance and link quality factors. EQRP takes the advantage of high quality links to increase success rate of single communication and reduce the cost of communication. Simulation shows that, compared with traditional clustered protocol,EQRP can perform 40% better,in terms of life cycle of the whole network. 展开更多

The inception of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) has brought convenience into many lives with uninterrupted wireless network. The nodes that transmit data consist of heterogeneous and battery equipped sensor nodes (SNs) that are deployed randomly for network surveillance. To manage the random deployment of nodes, clustering algorithms are used with efficient routing protocols. This results in aggregation and dropping of redundant data packets that enables flawless data transmission from cluster nodes to Base Station (BS) via Cluster Heads (CHs). In this paper, a dynamic and multi-hop clustering and routing protocol for thorough behavior analysis is proposed, taking distance and energy into consideration. This forms a smooth routing path from the cluster nodes, CHs, Sub-CHs to the BS. On comparing proposed process with the existing system, experimental analysis shows a significant enhancement in the performance of network lifetime, with improved data aggregation, throughput, as the protocol showing deterministic behavior while traversing the network for data transmission, we name this protocol as Multi-hop Deterministic energy efficient Routing protocol (MDR). 展开更多

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have inherent and unique characteristics rather than traditional networks. They have many different constraints, such as computational power, storage capacity, energy supply and etc;of course the most important issue is their energy constraint. Energy aware routing protocol is very important in WSN, but routing protocol which only considers energy has not efficient performance. Therefore considering other parameters beside energy efficiency is crucial for protocols efficiency. Depending on sensor network application, different parameters can be considered for its protocols. Congestion management can affect routing protocol performance. Congestion occurrence in network nodes leads to increasing packet loss and energy consumption. Another parameter which affects routing protocol efficiency is providing fairness in nodes energy consumption. When fairness is not considered in routing process, network will be partitioned very soon and then the network performance will be decreased. In this paper a Tree based Energy and Congestion Aware Routing Protocol (TECARP) is proposed. The proposed protocol is an energy efficient routing protocol which tries to manage congestion and to provide fairness in network. Simulation results shown in this paper imply that the TECARP has achieved its goals. 展开更多

Energy saver protocols decrease energy consumption totally. Most of them try to find the shortest path between source and destination to reduce energy consumption. But energy manager protocols balance energy consumption in network to avoid network partitioning. Finding best route only based on energy balancing consideration may lead to long path with high delay and decreases network lifetime. On the other hand, finding best route only with the shortest distance consideration may lead to network partitioning. This paper improves SEER [1] routing protocol. Traditional SEER is only energy saver and has poor idea about energy balancing. Our proposed protocol, named BEAR, considers energy balancing and optimal distance both. It finds a fair tradeoff between energy balancing and optimal distance by learning automata concept. We simulate and evaluate routing protocols by Glomosim [2] simulator. 展开更多

In this paper, a routing protocol for wireless sensor network, baptized energy based protocol (EBP) is proposed. Wireless sensor network presents many challenges and constraints, and one of the major constraints is the routing problem. Due to the limited energy of sensor nodes, routing in this type of network shall perform efficiently to maximize the network lifetime. One of the proposed algorithms is the directional source aware routing protocol (DSAP) which, after simulation, showed a lot of limitations and drawbacks. The modified directional source aware routing protocol (MDSAP) was proposed by the authors of this paper to address some of the DSAP’s limitations but remains limited to a fixed topology, fixed source and stationary nodes. So EBP is proposed and operated under different scenarios and showed, after its simulation using TinyOS, many advantages in terms of load balancing, free looping, minimizing packet error rate and maximizing network lifetime. 展开更多

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are used in different civilian, military, and industrial applications. Recently, many routing protocols have been proposed attempting to find suitable routes to transmit data. In this paper we propose a Fuzzy Energy Aware tree-based Routing (FEAR) protocol that aims to enhance existing tree-based routing protocols and prolong the network’s life time by considering sensors’ limited energy. The design and implementation of the new protocol is based on cross-layer structure where information from different layers are utilized to achieve the best power saving. Each node maintains a list of its neighbors in order to use neighbors’links in addition to the parent-child links. The protocol is tested and compared with other tree-based protocols and the simulation results show that FEAR protocol is more energy-efficient than comparable protocols. According to the results FEAR protocol saves up to 70.5% in the number of generated control messages and up to 55.08% in the consumed power. 展开更多

In this article, a routing protocol EARP (Energy Aware Routing Protocol) with the terminal node is proposed, to deal with the impact of the limited energy resources of Cognitive Radio Networks on the whole network routing. The protocol allows choosing the route from the neighbor nodes in different transmission paths, according to energy consumption of a single node and the full path. If the path breaks, the protocol will increase local routing maintenance strategy. It effectively reduces the retransmission caused by the situation, and improves the routing efficiency. It also can prevent the link transmission process selecting the fault route due to the energy depletion. Through simulation experiments compared with the LEACH (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy) routing protocol, the results showed that in the same experimental environment, the proposed EARP could obviously balance the load, protect low energy nodes, prolong the network survival time and reduce packet loss rate and packet delay of data delivery. So it can improve the energy consumption of sensing node and provide routing capabilities. 展开更多

Energy conservation is a significant task in the Internet of Things(IoT)because IoT involves highly resource-constrained devices.Clustering is an effective technique for saving energy by reducing duplicate data.In a clustering protocol, the selection of a cluster head(CH)plays a key role in prolonging the lifetime of a network. However, most cluster-based protocols, including routing protocols for low-power and lossy networks(RPLs),have used fuzzy logic and probabilistic approaches to select the CH node.Consequently, early battery depletion is produced near the sink.To overcome this issue,a lion optimization algorithm(LOA)for selecting CH in RPL is proposed in this study.LOA-RPL comprises three processes:cluster formation,CH selection, and route establishment.A cluster is formed using the Euclidean distance.CH selection is performed using LOA.Route establishment is implemented using residual energy information. An extensive simulation is conducted in the network simulator ns-3 on various parameters, such as network lifetime, power consumption, packet delivery ratio(PDR),and throughput. The performance of LOA-RPL is also compared with those of RPL,fuzzy rule-based energyefficient clustering and immune-inspired routing(FEEC-IIR),and the routing scheme for IoT that uses shuffled frog-leaping optimization algorithm(RISARPL).The performance evaluation metrics used in this study are network lifetime, power consumption,PDR,and throughput. The proposed LOARPL increases network lifetime by 20%and PDR by 5%–10%compared with RPL,FEEC-IIR,and RISA-RPL.LOA-RPL is also highly energy-efficient compared with other similar routing protocols. 展开更多

The algorithm changes the cluster head selection probability based on residual energy and location distribution of nodes. Recently, location-based routings in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are attracting a lot of interest in the research community, especially because of its scalability. In location-based routing, the network size is scalable without increasing the signalling overhead as routing decisions are inherently localized. Here, each node is aware of its position in the network through some positioning device like GPS and uses this information in the routing mechanism. In this paper, we first discuss the basics of WSNs including the architecture of the network, energy consumption for the components of a typical sensor node, and draw a detailed picture of classification of location-based routing protocols. Then, we present a systematic and comprehensive taxonomy of location-based routing protocols, mostly for sensor networks. All the schemes are subsequently discussed in depth. Finally, we conclude the paper with some insights on potential research directions for location-based routing in WSNs. 展开更多

More and more WSNs are being deployed in highly mobile environments. The fast moving sensor nodes bring significant challenges for the routing decision. In this paper, we propose an efficient logical location method, and designe a mobility estimating metric and derive a novel Green Mobility Estirmtion- based Routing protocol (G-MER) for WSNs. We also set up a full framework to evaluate its per- formance. Simulation results illustrate that G-MER achieves a fairly better perforrmnce in terrm of broadcast times and link failures than AODV. What's more, it decreases the mean hops by about 0.25 and reduces energy consumption by about 10% during the whole experiment. All the results show that G-MER can be effectively used in fast- moving and limited resource scenarios. 展开更多
