Whether the clinical curative effects of acupuncture in the treatment of lumbar and leg pain are linked to an inhibition of local IL-1 secretion is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To assess the influence of acupuncture on IL-1, this study was designed to verify the effects of acupuncture at the "Huatuojiaji (Extra)" point on the nerve root in a rat model of lumbar nerve root compression, compared with administration of meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: Randomized, controlled, molecular biology experiment, performed at the Experimental Center, Sixth People’s Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University between September 2005 and April 2006. MATERIALS: Forty healthy adult Sprague Dawley rats of either gender were included in this study. The rats were randomly and evenly divided into the following four groups: normal control, model, acupuncture and meloxicam groups. Lumbar nerve root compression was induced in rats in the model, acupuncture, and meloxicam groups by inserting a specially made silicon rubber slice at the juncture of the L5 nerve root and the dural sac. The acupuncture needle (pattern number N3030, 30#, 1.5 inch) was purchased from Suzhou Medical Appliance Factory, China. IL-1 enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit was purchased from Santa Cruz Biotechnology, Inc., USA. METHODS: The acupuncture group was acupunctured at the "Huatuojiaji" point, which is lateral to the compressed L5-6 nerve root, with an acupuncture depth of 0.5 cm. There were two treatment courses, each of involved seven 20-minute acupuncture sessions, one session a day. The meloxicam group was administered intragastrically 3.75 mg/kg meloxicam (5 mg meloxicam /10 mL physiological saline). Rats in the normal control group and model group received an intragastric administration of 10 mL/kg physiological saline. All administrations were performed once a day. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: At day 14 post-surgery, the IL-1 level in the compressed nerve root was determined by a streptavidin-peroxidase (S-P) immunohistochemical method, and IL-1β mRNA expression in the compressed nerve root was simultaneously detected by real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS: The expression levels of IL-1 and IL-1β mRNA in the L5 nerve root were significantly higher in the model group than in the control group (P 〈 0.01). However, the expression levels of IL-1 and IL-1β mRNA were significantly lower in the acupuncture and meloxicam groups than in the model group (P 〈 0.05–0.01). Expression levels of IL-1 and IL-1β mRNA were significantly higher in the acupuncture group than in the meloxicam group (P 〈 0.01). CONCLUSION: Acupuncture at the "Huatuojiaji" point decreases the IL-1 level by inhibiting IL-1β mRNA expression to a greater extent than meloxicam administration.展开更多

A gypsum replica of upper arm for young male was made and scanned for extracting the 3D coordinates of 4 feature points of shoulder point, the anterior/posterior armpit point and the axillary point describing the real arm-root shape under the normalized definitions, and the 5 landmarks were confirmed additionally for improving the fitting precision. Then, the wholly and piecewise fitting of arm-root curve with 9 feature points and mark points in total were generated respectively based on least square polynomial fitting method. Comparing to the wholly fitting, the piecewise fitted function segmented by the line between anterior and posterior axillary points showed a high fitting degree of arm-root morphology with R-square of 1, the length difference between fitted curve and gypsum curve is 0.003 cm within error range. And it provided a basic curve model with standard feature points to simulate arm-root morphology realistically by curve fitting for accurate body measurement extraction. </div>展开更多

METHODS: Adult female Wistar rats were examined after drug-induced anesthesia and isolation of the L4 dorsal root associated with the Zusanli (ST 36) acupoint, using bipolar platinum electrodes. We applied EA at Zusanli (ST 36) with a continuous wave waveform for 1 min, and recorded action potentials in the L4 spinal cord dorsal root nerve with a frequency of 5 Hz and various current intensity levels (approximately 1-4 mA). In addition, we tested EA with a frequency of 15 Hz and current intensity of 1-4 mA. The L4 spinal cord dorsal nerve bundle action potentials were measured for 1 min of EA. To analyze the discharge frequency, we used the maximum Lyapunov exponent and Lempel-Ziv (LZ) complexity. RESULTS: At a fixed frequency, with increasing intensity of EA, dorsal root nerve filament discharge frequency revealed an initial increase, followed by a decreasing trend. A stimulation intensity of 3 mA induced a significantly greater discharge frequency, compared with stimulation intensities of 2 and 4 mA. EA stimulation evoked neuroelectric signals with chaotic characteristics. Increased intensity led to an initial increase in LZ complexity which then decreased, with a stimulation strength of 3 mA inducing the highest level of LZ complexity. CONCLUSION: EA of different intensities can induce nerve action potential encoding with different features.展开更多

We optimized nitrogen deep-point application in root-growing zone(NARZ) for transplanted rice in subtropical China. Field plot experiments were conducted over two years(2014–2015) in a double-rice cropping system to evaluate the effects of nitrogen(N) fertilizer location on grain yield and N use efficiency(NUE). Four different nitrogen deep-point application methods(DN) were compared with traditional broadcast application(BN) using granular urea. The results showed that grain yield, recovery efficiency of N(REN), agronomic efficiency of N(AEN), and partial factor productivity of N(PFP_N) significantly increased 10.3–63.4, 13.7–56.7, 24.7–201.9 and 10.2–63.4%, respectively, in DN treatment compared to BN, respectively. We also find that DN treatments increased grain yield as well as grain N content, and thus grain quality, in comparison with conventional BN treatment. Correlation analysis indicated that significant improvement in grain yield and NUE mainly resulted from increases in productive panicle number and grain N content. In our proposed NARZ method, granular urea should be placed 0 to 5 cm around the rice seeding at a 12-cm depth druing rice transplanting. In NARZ, balanced application of N, P and K further improved grain yield and NUE over treatments with a single N deep-point application. High N uptake by the rice plant did not cause significant soil fertility depletion, demonstrating that this method could guarantee sustainable rice production.展开更多
